Alfornia ‘Al’ Buchanan

Graveside services for Alfornia “Al” Buchanan, 47, 45 Glem Drive, Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Peaceful Rest Cemetery, North Pinetree Boulevard, Thomasville. The Rev. Walter Marria, pastor of Westside Church of Christ, and the Rev. T.C. Mitchell Jr., pastor of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, will officiate. Mr. Buchanan died May 9 at his residence. Born April 13, 1959, in Thomasville, he was a son of Samuel W. Buchanan and the late Mary Ann Glenn Buchanan. He was a 1977 graduate of Thomasville High School and was a member of Bethel Missionary Baptist Church. Mr. Buchanan was a disabled veteran after serving in the U.S. Army for four years. Survivors include Samuel W. Buchanan; sisters, Yvonne B. Armster, Patricia B. Palmore both of Thomasville; wife, Paula D. Buchanan of Thomasville; brothers, Samuel L. Buchanan (Beverly) of Acworth, Norris L. Buchanan, Eddie J. Buchanan both of Atlanta; nephew, Yusef M. Armster (Kim) of Atlanta; nieces, Kashuntra C. Jones, Shiranda N. Jones both of Thomasville; stepson, Demetirus Pittman of Moultrie; stepdaughter, Reshone Pittman of Thomasville; devoted friend, Howard Mitchell of Thomasville; devoted friends, the Rev. Walter and Andre Marria of Thomasville; and numerous other great-nieces, brothers, sisters-in-law, cousins, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Ann Buchanan. The viewing is from noon to 8:30 p.m., today at the funeral home and from 10 a.m. until the services Saturday at the graveside. Services for Mary Lounette Sherrod Chastain, 77, Bainbridge, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2006, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Bainbridge. The Rev. Dr. Danny Shepard will officiate and interment is in the church cemetery. Active pallbearers are John Ward, Bobby Ward, Lee Ward, Drew Shealy, Michael Chastain, Chase Chastain and Ben Chastain. Mrs. Chastain died Wednesday, May 10 at Hospitality Care Center in Thomasville. Born Dec. 8, 1928, in Thomas County, she was the daughter of Frank Hoyt Sherrod and Evie Willis Sherrod. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church. Survivors include two sons, Tony Chastain of Roswell, Ronnie Chastain of LaGrange; three daughters, Pat Brinson of Whigham, Terry Ward of Bainbridge, Joy Shealy of Moultrie; a brother, Dwight Sherrod of Boston; five sisters, Jewel Griffin of Thomasville, Carolyn Vonier of Pavo, Christine Bannister of Riverdale, Lucille Carson of Boston, Faye Stewart of Ochlocknee; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Thompson will officiate and interment is in Crestview Cemetery in Cairo. Active pallbearers are Jimmy Fortner Sr., Jimmy Fortner Jr., John Fortner Jr., Ted Fortner, Gregory Fortner and Reganald Fortner. Mr. Fortner died May 9 at Archbold Hospital in Thomasville. Born Dec. 18, 1943, in Whigham, he was a son of Johnny Howard and Vera Mae Fortner. He was married to Emma Jefferson Fortner. He had lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., for 42 years before moving to Cairo nine months ago. Mr. Fortner attended Grady County public schools, was a domestic worker and a member of Zion Hill Pentecostal Church in Bronx, N.Y. Survivors include his wife, Emma Fortner of Cairo; sons, Aldric (Kimberly Ann) Fortner of Montclair, N.J., Michael Fortner, Daldric Fortner both of Brooklyn; daughter, Shelecia Fortner of Brooklyn; brothers, Jimmy (Costella) Fortner, John H. Mrs. Garland died May 6 at Grady General Hospital. Born May 13, 1925, in Cairo, she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Gussie Wilson Jackson. She was a married to Charlie Garland. She attended Grady County public schools and was a domestic worker. Survivors include her husband, Charlie Garland of Cairo; daughters, Brenda Lockman White of Decatur, Cheryl Laverne Lockman of Lithonia, Tanya G. Reynolds, William D. Thursby IV. Honorary pallbearer is Lee Kirkpatrick. Mr. Thursby died Tuesday, May 9 at Grady General Hospital in Cairo. Born Dec. 24, 1919, in Cairo, Grady County, he was a son of the late William David and Melissa Della Warren Thursby. On Oct. 7, 1945, he married Vivian Oates Thursby of Cairo. He served in the United States Army and retired after 50 years with Gem Land Co. He was a member of New Ochlocknee Baptist Church in Cairo and was on the inactive deacons board there. Survivors include his wife, Vivian Oates Thursby of Cairo; daughters, Peggy A. Cogan of Jacksonville, Fla., Anita L. Reynolds and husband, Steve of Bainbridge; son, William D. Thursby III and wife, Susan of Tallahassee, Fla.; sister, Ester Thomas of Pelham; sister-in-law, Clara Thursby of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Robert J. Cogan of Orange Park, Fla., Jeffery J. Cogan, Timothy J. Cogan both of Callahan, Fla., Steven T. Reynolds of Bainbridge, Matthew M. Reynolds of Bainbridge, William D. Mrs. Weldon died Wednesday, May 10 at Archbold Medical Center in Thomasville. Born Oct. 4, 1943, to Luther Welch and Ruby Griffin Welch of Pavo in Brooks County. She was a homemaker and devoted mother. Survivors include her husband, Frank Weldon of Pavo; two daughters, Regina (Mark) Weldon of Pavo, Celina (William “Bug”) Giddens of Meigs; two sons, Lavon (Evelyn) Cannon, Scotty (Marjorie) Cannon of Meigs; a brother, Buddy (Betty) Welch of Moultrie; a sister, Willie Mae (Dennie) Weldon of Pavo; 19 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Niki, Joseph and Sandra Cannon, Dawn, Thomas and Jennifer Roberts, Zachary and Kevin Carter, Angela Tipton, Rose, Wesley, George, Tiffany, Matthew and Cody Weldon, Elisha and Willie Giddins; two great-great-grandchildren, Jade and Cloe Tipton; and three nephews, Randy Welch, Danny Crosby and Kirk Weldon. Services for Doris Ann Rayburn of Thomasville are at 2 p.m., Friday, May 12, 2006, at Celebration Church, 5413 U.S. Hwy. 319 South in Thomasville. The Rev. Jimmy Bryson will officiate and interment is in Laurel Hill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Mike Harrell, David Cone, Omar Morales, Xavier Rodiriguez, Tim White and Joey Wood. Mrs. Rayburn died May 9 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born Feb. 18, 1934, in Thomasville, she was the daughter of the late J. T. Daniels Jr., and Norma Connelly Daniels. On Dec. 23, 1983, in Thomasville she married Herbert Rayburn who survives. Mrs. Rayburn attended Thomasville High School and was a homemaker. She was the owner of Doris’s Home Cooking and was a very talented seamstress for many years. Other survivors include son, William Preston Baggett Jr., of Florida; daughter and son-in-law, Deanne and Richard Harrell of Thomasville; grandchildren, Tina Mercer, Renee White, Brandy Escobar, Scott Harrell, Meagan Harrell, BreAnne Harrell; seven great-grandchildren; sisters, Barbara Henderson, Sue Cone; brother and sister-in-law, Neil and Penny Daniels all of Thomasville; and sister, Jeannine Daniel of Pavo. Elinor Lyle Bolton Taylor

Services for Elinor Lyle Bolton Taylor are at 10 a.m., Friday, May 12. 2006, at Allen & Allen Funeral Home in Thomasville. The Rev. Dr. Dan Spencer will officiate. Interment is Saturday, May 13, 2006, in DeLand, Fla. Mrs. Taylor, currently a resident of Thomasville, previously lived in Newport News, Va. for more than 50 years where she worked for a time at the Mariner’s Museum and was a first grade teacher for 30 years. She was married to the late Walter Frank Taylor, an engineer at the Hydraulics Laboratory of the Newport News Ship Building and Dry Dock Company and a charter member of All Saints Episcopal Church in Thomasville. She was the daughter of the late Dr. and Mrs. C. H. Bolton of Avon Park, Fla. Mrs. Taylor was a member of the St. Matthews Anglican Church of Newport News. She was a graduate of Stetson University in Florida where she was a member of the Alpha Xi Delta Sorority and she held a master’s degree from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. A generous, creative, and beautiful Christian lady, Mrs. Taylor leaves a legacy of friendship and love through the many lives she touched. She is survived by her sister, Annette Bolton Clark and brother-in-law, R. Lewis Clark; nieces, Carolyn Warren of St. Petersburg, Fla., S. Lynn Clark of Ellijay; her nephews, Charles H. Bolton of Seattle, Wash., Richard Taylor of DeLand, Floyd Taylor of Atlanta and Eric Clark of Morganton. The family will receive visitors from 7 to 8 p.m., today at Allen & Allen Funeral Home. Foy Randall Harris

Services for Foy Randall Harris, 65, of Ochlocknee, are at 2 p.m., Friday, May 5, 2006, in the chapel of Whiddon-Shiver Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Dewitt Rehberg officiating. Interment is in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers are Joey Conger, Bryant Ring, Chad Johnson, Rodney Harris, George Donalson and James B. Wilson. Born Nov. 28, 1940, in Moultrie, he was a son of the late Edwina Davis and James W. Harris. On June 20, 1971, he married June Ring, who survives. He served in the United States Army from July 1966 to July 1968 and was of the Baptist belief. Mr. Harris loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He was a retired electronic technician with Sears. In addition to his wife, June, he was survived by two sons, Edward Harris and his wife, Laurie of Norman Park, Ashley Harris and his fiancée, Heather Owen of Ricon; a daughter, Kimberly Harris of Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Barbara Payne of Galveston, Texas, Laverne Willis of Crawfordville, Fla., Martha Vick of Hitchcock, Texas; grandchildren, Rodney Harris and his wife Latoya, of Moultrie, Voncile Gibbs and her husband, Robby of Norman Park, Crystal Harris, Travis Harris; and two great-granddaughters. Mr. Harris was preceded in death by a brother, Lavoyd Harris. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Andrea Copeland Jones will officiate. Interment is in Crestview Cemetery. Active pallbearers are friends of the family. Mrs. McCord died May 1 at Grady General Hospital. Born in Cairo, she was a daughter of Kizer Powell and the late Savannah Walker. She was married to Ralph McCord who preceded her in death. She was a member of Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church. Survivors include a son, Stacy McCord Sr. of Thomasville; daughters, Toby McCord of Clearwater, Fla., Iris McCord of Cairo; father, Kizer Walker; brothers, Eddie Wooten of Philadelphia, Penn., Henry (Judy) Smith of Miami, Fla.; sisters, Delois (David) Anderson of Cairo, Barbara Smith of Philadelphia, Dorothy Whitehead of Miami, Donna Walker of Cairo; aunt, Bernice Wright of Cairo; uncle, Willie Walker Sr. of Miami, Fla.; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives. — Weston’s Funeral Home
