Burma Lee Connell

Memorial services for Burma Lee Connell, 82, Edison, are at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2005 at Edison United Methodist Church in Edison. A graveside service follows at 4:30 p.m. in Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. The Rev. Michael Dekle will officiate. Mrs. Connell died Thursday, May 12 in Edison. Born Dec. 19, 1922 in Grady County, she was a daughter of the late William A. and Effie Rehberg Lee. On Oct. 31, 1947, she married L.B. Connell of Edison who survives. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper and a member of Edison United Methodist Church. Other survivors include a son, William Connell and wife, Valorie of Naperville, Ill.; daughter, Lafaye Kiely of Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Christopher B. Connell of Tallahassee, Fla., Lockett Kiely of Phoenix, Layla Kiely of Pensacola, Fla.; sisters, Maurice Connell and husband, Bill of Cairo, Jane Maxwell of Cairo, Martha Harrison and husband, Buryl of Climax; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Marjorie Chambliss of Pelham, Rebecca Wheeler of Thomasville, Rosa Whigham of Cairo, Earl Connell and wife, Shirley of McDonough, Frank Connell and wife, Judy of Thomasville; and a host of nieces nephews. James William Dowdy

Services for James William Dowdy, 70, Pelham, are at 4:30 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2005 at Springhill Christian Church. Herman Pope will officiate and interment is in Springhill Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Joshua Butler, Blake Butler, Jason Jenkins, V.J. Dowdy, David West IV, Bud Willoughby, Bo Yeomans and Ben Washington. Honorary pallbearers are Rupert Vick, Carroll Cone, Larry Cone and Alex Aldridge. Mr. Dowdy died May 12 at his residence. Born Sept. 11, 1934 in Dodge County, Ga., he was a son of the late Ben Dowdy and Lois Burnam Dowdy. On March 2, 1958, he was married to Jessie M. Dowdy who survives. He was a carpenter and was a U.S. Army staff sergeant in Korea. Other survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Van Dowdy and wife, Donice of Meigs; daughter and son-in-law, Tammy Butler and husband, Freddie of Pelham; daughter, Valarie West of Crawfordville, Fla.; sister, Lois Dowdy of Conyers; uncle and aunt, Van and Lola Burnum; aunt, Patsy Rozier; eight grandchildren, Joshua Butler, Blake Butler, V.J. Dowdy and Debra, David West IV, Holli D. Josey, Destin and Jason Jenkins, Chelsie and Bud Willoughby, Ashley Schuman; seven great-grandchildren, Connor Prince, Aubri Josey, Kayden Dowdy, Davin Dowdy, Abby Jenkins, Taylor and Gage Willoughby. Services for Mary Sanford Fuller, Thomasville, are at 3 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2005 at New Covenant Church, 48 Patterson Still Spur, East. The Rev. Jim Armstrong and the Rev. Barry Perez will officiate and interment is in Mount Nebo Church Cemetery in Grady County. Mrs. Fuller died May 8 at Archbold Hospital. Born Sept. 23, 1948 in Thomas County, she was a daughter of David E. Sanford and the late Eliza Daniels-Thompson. She was a teacher at Central High School and a member of New Covenant Church. Survivors include her father, David E. Sanford of Thomasville; son and wife, Jeremiah Fuller II (Tina) of Valdosta; daughters and husbands, Pamela Wade (Raynard), Angelia Clark (Brian) all of Thomasville; sister, Betty Sanford of Thomasville; brothers and sisters-in-law, Willie James Sanford (Estella) of Thomasville, Freddie Lee Sanford (Joyce), Eddie Lee Sanford (Carol) all of Kentucky; six grandchildren; other relatives and friends. Judy Kay Hopkins Lewis

Services for Judy Kay Hopkins Lewis, 56, Cairo, are at 11 a.m., Monday, May 16, 2005 at First Baptist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Dr. Joe Allen, the Rev. John Paul Hasick and the Rev. Dr. Ron McCaskill will officiate and interment is in Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. Active pallbearers are Wallace Pope, Wilkes Nicholson, Sid Pridgen, Barry Pollock, Johnny Tuggle, Keith Harrell, Wilkes Nicholson and Carroll Bryan. Mrs. Lewis died May 12 at her residence. Born March 16, 1948 in Thomasville, she was a daughter of E.D. Hopkins of Cairo and the late Peggy Godwin Hopkins. On Dec. 24 1966, she married Walter Harvey Lewis of Cairo, who survives. She was a homemaker, had worked with Grady County Board of Education, in a physician’s office and was presently a receptionist at WCTV. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Cairo and a member of the Mary-Martha Sunday School Class. Other survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Walter Harvey II and Sherry Lewis of Pelham; daughter, Jenna Katherine Lewis of San Antonio, Texas; father and stepmother, E.D. and Dorothy Hopkins of Cairo; grandchildren, Amara Irene Lewis, Walter Seth Lewis, Sydney Leigh Lewis; sisters and brothers-in-law, Sherolyn and Mike Eller of Waverly, Tenn., Anita and Roger Singletary of Whigham, Peggy Gwenelle and Dean Glascock of Old Hickory, Tenn.; brother and sister-in-law, Dave and Cheryl Hopkins of Cairo. James Greene Jr. will officiate and interment is in Peaceful Rest Cemetery in Thomasville. Active pallbearers are Men in Unity of Thomasville. Mrs. Tillman died May 11 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born April 27, 1920 in Brooks County, she was a daughter of the late Clearance and Eva Lee Grant. She was married to Guss Tillman Sr. She was attended Thomas County School System, member of St. Luke CME Church in Thomasville and member of Aucilla Order of Eastern Star Lodge No. 1. She was a housewife. Survivors include sons, Willie Lee Tillman of Valdosta, Benjamin Tillman Sr. of Thomasville, Guss Tillman Jr. of Lenoca, Kan.; daughters, Elizabeth Sirmons, Eva Mae Jones, Grace Dubose, Pauline Kerbo all of Thomasville; and other family and friends. John Wyeth Walker

Services for John Wyeth Walker, Cairo, are at 4 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2005 at First United Methodist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Richard Soper and the Rev. Ike Powell will officiate and interment is in Cairo Cemetery. Active pallbearers are David Stallings, Wyman Richter, Willard Chason, Terry Beeson, Buddy Childs, Bob Lashley, John Wallace and Kenneth Thrash. Mr. Walker died Thursday, May 12 at South Georgia Medical Center in Valdosta. Born Oct. 2, 1919 in Cairo, he was a son of the late William Albert Walker and Eva Hall Walker. On May 17, 1942, he married Marion Minter Walker of Cairo. Mr. Walker was a graduate of Cairo High School and was a 1940 graduate of Georgia Tech. He retired on Dec. 31, 1982, from the position of city manager, a position he held for 19 years. He began his career with the city in 1940 with the light and water department. He left the city to serve with the U.S. Army (master sergeant) and transferred to the U.S. Navy as lieutenant (JG) as ordinance specialist because there was such a need for engineers. After discharge from the military, he returned to Cairo and continued with the city for 38 more years of unbroken service. While he was with the city, he designed the Christmas lights display of a canopy of lights over Broad Street that is still being used today. He served for several years as president of Georgia Municipal Association. There is a city park dedicated in his honor on north Broad street by the city government offices. He received the community service award from the Cairo-Grady County Chamber of Commerce in 1982. He was a member of First United Methodist Church. Survivors include his wife, Marion Minter Walker of Cairo; daughters, June Phelps of Tallahassee, Fla., Rebecca Bentley and husband, David of Valdosta; grandchildren, Shawn Phelps, Eugene Oregon, Catherine Roark and husband, Everett of Valdosta, Kirsten Phelps of Tallahassee, Fla., James Carl Minter of Lexington, Ky.; step-grandchildren, Melissa Stubbs, Shannon Cribbs, Zackery Bentley, Jesse Bentley, Kathryn Bentley all of Valdosta, Emily Kent of Warner Robins, David Bentley Jr. of Kingston, Tenn.; great-grandchildren, Jillian Roark, Evan Roark, Austin Roark all of Valdosta; step-great-grandchildren, Ainsley Cribbs, Drew Stubbs, Gretchen Stubbs all of Valdosta, Tyler Bentley of Kingston, Tenn., and Elle Kent of Warner Robins. Joanne Everette Moore

Services for Joanne Everette Moore, 65, Detroit, Mich., were at 2 p.m., Monday, May 9, 2005 at First Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. I.L. Mullins officiated and interment was in Magnolia Cemetery. She died Wednesday, May 4 at Sinai Grace Hospital in Detroit. She was the daughter of Johnnie Everette of Atlanta and the late Russel Everette. She was a former member of First Missionary Baptist Church of Thomasville. Survivors include her son, Emerson Moore of New York; her daughter, Camille Moore of New Jersey; three sisters; and a host of family and friends. - Grooms Funeral Home

Services for Irene Peek Dean, 77, Pavo, are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2005 at Cobb Funeral Chapel. The Rev. James Sellers will officiate and interment is in Salem Cemetery. Mrs. Dean died May 7 at her residence. Born Sept. 21, 1927 in Brooks County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Cannie Jane Rhodes Peek and Clark Peek. She was married to David Austin Dean who preceded her in death. She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith. Survivors include daughters, Janice Robinson and husband, Zane of Pavo, Marolyn Gail Hall and husband, Bill of Pavo; brother, Arthur Peek of Moultrie; sister, Agnes Bruce of Boston; two grandchildren, Bradley Z. Mrs. Edwards died May 8 at her residence. Born Nov. 17, 1912 in Pelham, she was a daughter of the late J.M. Culpepper and Allene Starr West Culpepper. She was a homemaker and member of Pelham First Baptist Church. She was married to Harvey S. Edwards who preceded her in death. Survivors include daughter, Martha Mixon of Albany; son, Harvey Edwards of Pelham; grandchildren, Meredith Erickson of Marietta, Michael P. Mixon of Albany and Blaine Edwards of Pelham. Active pallbearers are Reese Fain, Emory Moore, Gary Fain, Bo Cone, Brent Brock and Brockey Brock. Mrs. Jordan died Tuesday, May 24 at Grady General Hospital in Cairo. Born May 17, 1935 in Whigham, she was a daughter of the late Jackson Harold and Mamie Louise Bryant Johnson. She was married to David Jordan of Cairo who survives. She was a lifetime resident of Cairo, auditor with Ithaca and member of El Bethel Baptist Church. Other survivors include a daughter, Karen Davis and husband, Mickey of Cairo; son, Michael and wife, Jennifer Jordan of Cairo; grandchildren, Jordan Carver, Hamp Carver, David Lee Jordan, Jacob Jordan all of Cairo; sisters, Sara Fain, Betty Green both of Cairo; several nieces and nephews. Francis Edward ‘Frank’ Mason

Services for Francis Edward (Frank) Mason are at 2 p.m., Thursday, May 26, 2005 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church with Father Jacek Szuster officiating. Interment is in Sunset Memorial Gardens. Mr. Mason died May 22 at his residence. Born on April 22, 1935 in Bridgeport Conn., he was the son of the late William Mason and Cora Baxtrom Mason. Mr. Mason was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and was retired from Warnaco Corp. as the vice president of marketing. On July 5, 1958 in Stratford, Conn., he married Justine Howard Mason, who survives. Other survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Denise and Benji Stevens of Spartanburg, S.C.; sister, Lillian Popovics of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; brother, William Mason of Bridgeport, Conn.; grandchildren, James Benjamin Stevens and Elizabeth Ann Stevens both of Spartanburg, S.C.; nieces, Marie Leach of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Mary Heavens of Springhill, Fla.
