Alma Williams

Funeral services for Sister Alma Williams will be held on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004 at 2 p.m. at the St. Thomas Primitive Baptist Church in Cairo, Ga. The Elder Darrell Harrison will officiate with burial in the Crestview Cemetery. Family friends will serve as pallbearers and flowerbearers. Mrs. Williams was born on October 14, 1920 in Hawkinsville, Ga. She departed this life on November 20, 2004 at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. She attended the Grady County School System. In 1936 she married Albert Williams, Sr. In 1938 she became a member of St. Thomas P.B. Church. In 1944 the family moved to Philadelphia. She was one of the original founding members of the Cornerstone Baptist Church, under the pastorate of the Rev. Harrold O. Davis. In 1972 she became a member of the Nazarene Baptist Church under the pastorate of the Rev. James Cherry. Her survivors include four daughters, Mildred Gourdine and Annie Williams, Philadelphia, Pa.; Gloice Weems and Alma Bush, Cairo, Ga.; two sons, Albert Williams, Jr. (Rosa), Thomasville, and Alvin Williams (Denise); Upperhill, Md.; two God children, James and Edna Bush, Philadelphia, Pa.; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; special relatives and friends, Essie Mae Jones, Cairo, Ga., and Dorothy Williams, Philadelphia, Pa.; a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by two children. The body will lie in state at the church from noon Saturday Nov. 27, 2004 until the funeral hour. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday, Nov. 26, 2004 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. - Williford’s Funeral Home

Bernice Miller Sellers

Services for Bernice Miller Sellers, 79, Pelham, Ga., are at 2 p.m. at Mizpah Primitive Baptist Church Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004. Elder Max Childs will officiate and interment is at Mizpah Cemetery. Active pallbearers are grandchildren and great-grandchildren with honorary pallbearers Gerald Brooks, Mike Purvis, Elwyn Childs, Herschel Ansely and Ed Miller. Mrs. Sellers died Nov. 24, 2004 at her residence. Born in Grady County May 29, 1925, she was a member of New Hope Primitive Baptist Church and New Hope Demonstration Club. She was a retired associate of Torrington/Timken Corp. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph Howell and Susan Sellars Miller, her adoptive parents, Fountain S. and Lula Cone and a daughter, Lana Maureen Sellers. Three sisters, Carrie Cone Glover, Mary Gertrude Matthews, Erie Miller Beckwith; five half sisters, Delia Owens, Esther Barfield, Carrie Mae “Madie” Ansley, Ethel Ricks and Annie Ansley; and five half brothers, Ross F. Miller, Lonnie R. Miller, Grover B. Miller, Zannie E. Miller and Eugene Donnie Miller. Mrs. Sellers was the wife of the late Loring Sellers. She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Laurice and Phyllis Sellers, of Pelham, Michael H. and Cheryl Sellers, of Whigham, Ga., and a daughter and son-in-law, Karen S. and Tony Murray of Gainesville, Ga. She is also survived by a brother, Wesley Carroll Cone, of Ochlocknee, Ga., grandchildren and spouses Melinda K. and Mike Purvis, Lara Lyn Sellers and fiancee Gerald Brooks, Joshua Matt and Wendy Sellers, Michael Brett and Charlene Sellers, L.G. Tripp Culbreth III, Casey T. Culbreth and Rainey B. Sellers. Additional survivors include great-grandchildren, Kayla Lyn Purvis, Karlee B. Sellers, Sarah Culbreth, Kason G. Sellers, Destiny Sellers, Samantha Lewis and Danielle Bell as well as one great-great-grandchild, Charlie Kirby. Mrs. Sellers was the last surviving child of Joseph Howell Miller and the last surviving grandchild of Mason Covington Miller, who was a veteran of both the Mexican and Civil wars. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Braswell Funeral Home in Pelham. - Braswell Funeral Home

Nancy Lee Berkshire

Services for Nancy Lee Berkshire, of Thomasville, will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Victory Baptist Church, where she was a member. Pastors Larry and Ann Nunnally will officiate and burial will be on Tuesday in Warsaw, Ohio. The daughter of the late Raymond and Olive Stockman, she was born on April 10, 1943 in Warsaw. Mrs. Berkshire was a graduate of Warsaw High School and also graduated from Modesto, Calif. Junior College with a degree in business. She was employed as the first woman manager for Western Southern Life Insurance Company, retired from Pretty Products and was the owner and manager of Big Foot Carpet. She was married to the late Kenneth Berkshire. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Jacquline and Jeff Guinther of Coshocton, Ohio; a son, Robert Burton of Moultrie, Ga.; and daughter, Jandee Carroll, of Thomasville, Ga. Also surviving are grandchildren, Heather Burton, Luke Carroll, Jason Guinther, Robert Burton II, Mathew Burton, Lilli Carroll; step-grandchildren surviving are Robert and Josh Montville; and two great grandchildren Darian and Jossiah Cruz are also survivors. Other survivors include brothers and sisters-in-law, Dwight and Judy Fesler, of Coshocton, Ohio; Woody and Imagine Wilson, of Warsaw; and a sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Ronald Potter of Frazeyberg, Ohio. Many nieces and nephew and great nieces and nephews also survive her. Mrs. Bershire was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Annotte, and a sister and brother-in-law, John and Leona Lapp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, P.O. Ruth Peterson Brooks

Services for Ruth Peterson Brooks, 83, Meigs are at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004 at Morning Star M.B. Church in Meigs. The Rev. Estell Arrington will officiate and interment is in Sunse Cemetery in Meigs. Active pallbearers are friends of the family. Mrs. Brooks died Nov. 19 at Camilla Hospital. Born in Grady County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Oscar and Carrie Peterson. She was married to Cranford L. Brooks who preceded her in death on Sept. 8, 1952. She was a member of Morning Star M.B. Church in Meigs and a housekeeper. Survivors include a loving husband, Robert Smith Sr. of Meigs; daughters, Lillie and Rufus Minter of Albany, Geraldine Mitchell of Meigs, Vera and James Jackson of Thomasville, Helen and Terrance Brown of Meigs, Regina and Riley McClendon of Meigs, Annie Ruth and Curtis Conage of Meigs, Marion Cochran of Meigs, Glenda Brooks of Meigs; sons, Glynn Brooks of Moultrie, Lewis Brooks of Coolidge, James and Vera Smith of Thomasville; daughter, Linda Davis of Tallahassee, Fla.; god-daughter, Peggy Wynn of Meigs; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; other relatives and friends. Services for Edna Broadnax, 57, Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004 at Shiloh Baptist Church. The Rev. C. Henry will officiate and interment is in Peaceful Rest Cemetery. Active pallbearers are friends of the family. Mrs. Broadnax died Nov. 21 at Archbold Hospital. Born Nov. 16, 1947 in Thomas County, Ga., she was a daughter of the late Henry Broadnax and Frankie Mae Smith. She attended Douglass High School, member of Shiloh Baptist Church and was a nurse’s aide and hair stylist. She had lived in Thomasville for one year after moving from Tallahassee, Fla. Survivors include a son, Bobby Broadnax (Betty) of Tallahassee; sisters, Rocela Sanders of Thomasville, Sharon Bostick, Rosetta Fulton, Margret Smith all of Atlanta, Tangela Smith of Thomasville, Valerie Smith of Germany; brothers, Edward Smith (Cynthia), Franklin Smith, Tommy Smith all of Thomasville; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Allen Leland Samard Sr.

Graveside services for Allen Leland Samard Sr. of Ellenton are at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 at Sunset Memorial Gardens. The Rev. Gary Conger will officiate. Mr. Samard died Nov. 17 in Thomasville. Born Sept. 23, 1936 in Albany, Ore., he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel Charles Samard. He was a member of East Side Baptist Church and was a building contractor. Survivors include his sons, Scott Samard of Thomasville, Stephen Shaun Samard of Greenville, S.C., Andrew Gabriel Charles Samard of Laredo, Texas; daughter, Tiffany Ranee Samard of Savannah; four grandchildren; brother, Arlen Samard of Tangent, Oregon; sisters, Arlene Stockley of Eugene, Ore., Marilyn Samard; and a brother, Darrell Samard both of Albany, Oreg. - Allen & Allen Funeral Home

Jester Phinazee

Services for Jester James Phinazee, 81, of Slocomb, Ala. are at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 21, 2004 in Mount Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. Walter Collins will officiate and interment is in the church cemetery. Mr. Phinazee died Friday, Nov. 19. He was born March 19, 1923 to the late James Paul and Maggie Estell (Fletcher) Phinazee. He retired as an Aircraft Airframe and Power Plant Instructor from Alabama Aviation Technical College in Ozark in 1984. Survivors include his wife, Mary Alice Phinazee of Ozark, Ala.; one daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and George Hinson of Slocomb; seven grandchildren, Holly and Grant Dodson of Slocomb, Robert and Virginia Phinazee of Macon, Amy and Chris Altese of Diamondhead, Miss., Deana and Joseph Broome of North Carolina, Tim and Marcia Phinazee of Gulfport, Miss., Glen Phinazee of Birmingham, Ala., Denise and Randy Ingram of Panama City, Fla.; nine great grandchildren, Baron Dotson, Annie Dotson of Slocomb, Zack Phinazee, Eli Phinazee of Macon, Katelyn Altese of Gulfport, Cody Broome, Hunter Broome, Conner Broome of North Carolina and Scott Phinazee of Gulfport. His parents, James Paul and Estell Phinazee, two sons, Durwood Phinazee and Gary Phinazee, as well as a grandson, Keith Hinson, preceded him in death. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 until service time Sunday afternoon. Rosa Lee Hart

Services for Rosa Lee Hart, Thomasville, are at 11 a.m., Monday, Nov. 15, 2004 at Mercy Seat Christian Church in Grady County where she was a member. The Rev. Dr. Leon Jones will officiate and interment is in Browning/Copeland Cemetery. Active pallbearers are Thomas Hart, Deric Hudson, Eric Hudson, Eddie Hart, Harold Green Jr., Devin Lewis, Kelly Lewis and Robert Lee Jr. Honorary pallbearers are Job Coleman, Eugene Conner, Eustace Cromartie, Frank Delaney, Arthur Miles Sr. and Charlie Ward Sr. Mrs. Hart died Nov. 11 at Archbold Memorial Hospital. Born May 30, 1917 in Thomas County, she was a daughter of the late John Hill Sr. and Rosetta Gardner Hill. She was married to John Hudson and Dennis Hart both of whom preceded her in death. She was a former resident of the Metcalfe community and employed as a domestic worker by the late Dr. Alvin Krech and the late Nat Williams Jr. Survivors include a son and his wife, Leroy (Lillie) Hudson of Thomasville; daughters and their husbands, Mamie (Robert) Lee of Cleveland, Ohio, Johnnie (Marvin) Florence of Detroit, Mich.; daughters, Doshia Hart of Tampa, Fla., Joyce Smith of Thomasville; daughter and her husband, Betty (Harold) Green of Thomasville; daughter, Denise Hudson of Thomasville; brother and his wife, Charlie (Bessie) HIll of Thomasville; sister, Juanita Davis of Cleveland, Ohio; adopted daughter, Annette Young of Thomasville; adopted son and his wife, Job (Willie) Coleman of Thomasville; stepson and his wife, Eddie (Elsie) Hart of Tampa; stepdaughter and her husband, Alice (Clyde) Washington of Thomasville; stepdaughters, Ella Mae Fleno and Gladys Hart both of Thomasville; brother-in-law and his wife, James (Irene) Hart of Miccosukee, Fla.; sister-in-law, Mary Lee Thomas of Tampa; cousins, Lossie (Joseph) Fedrick of Thomasville, Alean Ross of Atlanta, Lucille Stroud of Jacksonville, Fla.; 17 grandchildren including a devoted granddaughter, Constance Hudson of Thomasville; 26 great-grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; nine step-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives. Kathleen Ross Davis

Graveside services for Kathleen Ross Davis, 92, of White Oak Manor, Charlotte, N.C. are at 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004 at Arlington Memorial Park in Atlanta. The Rev. Garland Basford, minister at Thomasville Church of Christ, will officiate. Mrs. Davis died Nov. 10 after a battle with Parkinson’s disease. She was born Jan. 10, 1912 in San Antonio, Texas. She moved her family to Atlanta in 1949 and worked for over 25 years at E.T. Barwick Mills located in Chamblee. She was working as Mr. Barwick’s personal secretary when the company was sold. She then retired and lived many happy years near her sisters in Thomasville. In 1997, she moved to Charlotte to live with her daughter, Jan Beall, where she was a member of the Providence Road Church of Christ. Survivors include her daughter, Jan Beall of Davidson, N.C.; granddaughters, Sandra Duck, Susan Cheeley and husband Rob Cheeley; great-grandchildren, Sarah and Rachel Cheeley all of Charlotte; sisters, Billie Courtney of Thomasville, Amanda Williams of Macon; brother, W.J. Ross and wife Lou of Newport News, Va.; grandsons, Duane, Heath, Dusty, John Philip and Christopher Davis in Georgia. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Davis was preceded in death by her husband, Vinson R. Davis of Atlanta in 1971; a son, Vinson R. Davis Jr. in 1992; and brother, Calvert Ross of Newport News, Va. in 1998. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 E. Seventh St., Charlotte, N.C. 28204. Martha Elkins Harrell

Services for Martha Elkins Harrell, 82, are at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 12, 2004 at the chapel of Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals. The Rev. Dr. Wayne Roe and the Rev. Dr. Russ Elkins will officiate. Graveside services follow at 5 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in Cairo. Mrs. Harrell died Wednesday, Nov. 10 at Tift Health Care. Born July 19, 1922, in Grady County, Mrs. Harrell was the daughter of the late Ivey Elkins and Hattie Brady Elkins. She was a retired educator, having taught at Northside Elementary School, and was a member of First Baptist Church, Tifton. Mrs. Harrell is survived by her husband, Edsel Harrell Sr. of Tifton; one son, Edsel (Leatha) Harrell Jr. of Dallas, Texas; two daughters, Karen (Greg) Smith of St. Simons Island and Debbie Harrell of Nashville, Tenn.; four brothers, David (Mary Catherine) Elkins, Billy (Martha Ruth) Elkins, Frank (Jean) Elkins and Jimmy Elkins, all of Cairo; and five grandchildren, Erin Williamson, Devon Williamson, Flint Harrell, Glenn Harrell and Cliff Harrell. Annie Lee Williams

Services for Annie Lee Williams, Thomasville, are at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004 at Friendship House of Prayer in Cairo. Elder Ruben Addision Sr. will officiate and interment is in Crestview Cemetery. Active pallbearers are friends of the family. Mrs. Williams died Nov. 10 at Archbold Hospital. Born in Orangeburg County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Harrison and Lillian Rollins. She was married to Willie Williams, who survives, of Thomasville. Other survivors include daughters, Bessie (William) Jackson, Mary Cooper all of Cairo, Angel (Nathaniel) Reddick of Thomasville; sons, Willie C. Active pallbearers are Jerry Daniels of Thomasville, Ira Joe Mitchell of Tallahassee, Fla., Osie Dennis of Thomasville, Frankie Mitchell of Tallahassee, Ollie Jones and Charles Wyche both of Thomasville. Mr. Wyche died Nov. 6 at his residence. Born Nov. 3, 1952 in Thomasville, he was the son of Ida Pearl Jackson Wyche and the late Allen Wyche of Thomasville. A lifetime resident of Thomasville, he attended Thomasville City Schools and a member of Evangelizing the Word Church. He was a foreman of a fish pond company. Survivors include his mother, Ida Pearl Wyche of Thomasville; sister, Vangie Thomas of Thomasville; brothers, Tommy Wyche, J.B. Charles E. Livingston Jr.

Memorial services for Charles E. Livingston Jr., 60, of Cairo, are at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004 at St. Augustine Catholic Church where he was a member. Father Jacek Szuster will officiate. Mr. Livingston died Sunday, Nov. 7 at his home. A former resident of Vicksburg, Miss. and Foley, Ala., Mr. Livingston was a U.S. Army veteran serving from 1961 to 1965. He was a retired police officer of the Vicksburg Police Department. Mr. Livingston was a student at Southwest Georgia Technical College. He was preceded in death by his parents, James H. and Ola F. Sullivan and Charles E. Livingston Sr. He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline L. Livingston; his daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and Tim Moore all of Cairo; Monica and Doug Whitehead of Kimberly, Wisc.; four grandchildren, Meghan, Jenna, Jamie and Taylor; sisters, Marjorie Martin and Geraldine McPhail of Vicksburg, Miss.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and JoAnn Aerts; sister-in-law, Norma Posey all of Wisconsin, several nieces and nephews.
