HOMER E. BEASLEY

Homer E. Beasley, 95, of Jesup diedThursday April 3, 2003, at his residence. The Wayne County native was a retired truck driver and bridge construction foreman. He was a member of the Parkway Church of God and was the widower of Lula Mae Durden Beasley. He was predeceased by a daughter, Eula Mae Herndon. Survivors are two daughters, Mrs. Geraldine Smith of Jesup, and Mary Ann Edge of Vidalia; two sons, Charlie Beasley of Stoystown, Penn., and Roy Beasley of Jesup; a sister, Pearl Gutwin of Naples, Fla., a brother, Willard Beasley of Eatonton, 17 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 5, from the Parkway Church of God with Rev. Randy Rowell, Rev. Eugene Evors and Rev. Claude Evors officiating. iIntermentwill be in Jesup City Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Jody Edge, Kenny Edge, Robert Smith, John Smith, David Summerall and Randolph Cox. Honorary pallbearers will be Members of the Senior Adult Sunday School Class of Parkway Church of God. The Rinehart & Sons Funeral Homes of Jesup is in charge of the arrangements.

Roger G. Graham Sr.

Roger G. Graham Sr., 50, of Jesup diedJune 10, 2003, of an apparent heart attack. The Wayne County native was a clerical worker. He was predeceased by his parents, Lester and Kathleen Graham and a sister, Joan Friel. Survivors are his son, Derek Graham of Jesup; one sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and Gale Heckwine of Jesup; a brother-in-law, Olen Friel of Jesup; three brothers and two sisters-in-law, Ronnie and Linda Graham of Jesup, Covin Graham of Kings Mountain, N.C., and Corky and Becky Graham of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 14, from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home with the Rev. Jack Lee and the Rev. Mark Ledbetter officiating. iIntermentwas in the Jesup City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Kelly Hyers, Joshua May, John Evors, Allen Friel, Marlin Friel, James Friel, Carl Heckwine and Scott Hyers. Honorary pallbearers were Donnie Marr, Kevin Graham, Brian Graham, Billy Smith, Chad Evors and Harvey (Grandpa) Davis. Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of arrangements.

Florence C. Laxton

Florence C. Laxton, 67, of Jesup diedJune 12, 2003, in Wayne Memorial Hospital after a short illness. The West Virginia native had lived in Wayne County the past 33 years. She was a member of Piney Grove Church of God and was a former employee of Winn Dixie of Jesup. Survivors are her husband, Amos Laxton of Jesup; a daughter and son-in-law, Susie and Richard Eaton of Hortense; five sons, Larry Amos Laxton, Kenneth Wayne Laxton, both of Jesup, Eddie Laxton of Richmond, Va., Lonnie Laxton of Richmond Hill and James “Terry” Laxton of San Antonio, Texas; two sisters, Pauline Frazier of Pikesville, Ky., Nancy White of Spartanburg, S.C.; six brothers, Ellis Christian of Sevierville, Tenn., Larry Christian, Everett Christian, Tom Christian, Dave Christian, all of Kendallville, Ind., and Bob Christian of Cape Canaveral, Fla.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 14, from Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Jimmy Lord officiating. iIntermentwas in Spring Grove Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Sam Waddell, David Hubbs, Ricky Green, Robert Green, Jamie Green and Greg Carter. Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of arrangements.

Katherine H. Morgan

Katherine Harris Morgan, 64, of Jesup diedJune 6, 2003, in Wayne Memorial Hospital after a long illness. The Baldwin County native lived in Wayne County for many years. She was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses of Jesup, and was a former employee of McDaniel Vending and Food Service. Survivors included a husband, William James Morgan Jr.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William J. and Sharon Morgan and Eric J. Morgan; four sisters, Mary Frances Daniel of Philadelphia, Pa., Dorothy V. Johnson of Cleveland, Ohio, Mamie McFadden of Chicago, Ill., and Carlene Johnson of Milledgeville; three brothers, Algie Harris Jr. and Carl Harris, both of Milledgeville and Julius A. Harris of Cleveland, Ohio; and a host of other relatives, friends and spiritual brothers and sisters. Memorial services were held Saturday, June 14, at 1 p.m. at the former Wayne County High School auditorium. Brother Van Pinkard of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses officiated. Royal Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of arrangements.

Ira Dent Jr.

Ira Dent Jr., 74, of Odum diedFeb. 22, 2004, after a short illness. The Coffee County native had lived in Wayne County for 25 years, was a retired United Methodist Church minister and was a U. S. Navy Veteran. He graduated from Waycross High School and attended South Georgia College, Valdosta State College, Georgia Southern College and Emory Theology School of Atlanta. He was ordained as a deacon in the United Methodist Church in 1964 and was elder in 1966. He ministered to churches in Charlton County, Irvin County, Pierce County, Dodge County, Effingham County, Toombs County, Ware County and Jefferson County. He was active in Campus Crusade for Christ, Promise Keepers and Laity programs. He owned and operated a Christian Book Store, and organized Christian schools in Charleston, S.C. and Valdosta. He served churches in Isle of Palms and Sullivans Island in South Carolina, was stationed in the U. S. Navy in Hawaii, and served in the Congregational Methodist Church as a District Evangelist. He also served in the Southern Methodist Church, Wesleyan Church and the Congregational Christian Church Survivors are his wife of 37 years, Bessie Dean Dent of Odum; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Wylene Dent and Aubrey Parker of Dublin, Annelle Dent and Reginal McDuffee of Savannah, and Robie Sue Dent and Ronald Schneider of Huntsville, Ala.; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Joel and Joyce Fountain Dent of Dublin; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Rinehart & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Hayward Bass, the Rev. Byron Scott, Dr. Julian Tucker, the Rev. Darrell Carter, Dr. Joel Dent, Jimmy Cason and Bill Hinson officiating. Visitation will be 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday prior to the services at the funeral home. Honorary pallbearers will be fellow ministers. In lieu of flowers, send memorials to Arthur J. Moore Museum at Epworth by the Sea, P. O. Box 20407, St. Simons Island, Ga., 31522. Clara B. W. Dryer

Clara Bell Williams Dryer, 90, of Screven diedFeb. 17, 2004. She was bornMarch 9, 1913 to the late Joseph and Ida Williams in Townsend. She was a member of First African Missionary Baptist Church of Screven. Survivors include two sons and two daughters-in-law, Jessie R. and Bertha Dryer of El Paso, Texas, and John H. and Cheryl Dryer of Fayetteville, N.C.; two god-daughters and a spouse, Lonnie Mae Ports Smith, and Jeanette and Charlie Hillmon; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a host of cousins and friends. Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at First African Missionary Baptist Church in Screven with Dr. James W. Anthony Jr. officiating. iIntermentwas in Screven Cemetary.

Viola Williams Miller

Viola Williams Miller, 102, diedSunday, Feb. 22, 2004 in the Sears Manor Nursing Home after an extended illness. The Jeff Davis County native was a former resident of Baxley and lived in Brunswick since 1979. She was the widow of Sam L. Owens and Steve D. Miller. Survivors are a daughter, Winifred Douglas of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Clyde S. Owens of Monk’s Corner, S.C.; three sisters, Carol Dean Weaver, Margaret Carter and Rosene Carter all of Baxley; three brothers, David Williams of Surrency, and Rosevelt Williams and George Williams, both of Hortense; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Rinehart & Sons Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Carlton Rowell officiating. iIntermentwill be in the Zion Baptist Church Cemetery in Appling County. Active pallbearers will be Greg Carter, Jasper Carter, Herschel Carter, Kenneth Kubowicz, Shawn Stacy and Owen Carter. Visitation will be 1-3 p.m., prior to services Wednesday. Yarles J. Hernandez

Yarles Jovani Hernandez, 23, of Jesup diedFeb. 22, 2004. The Puerto Rico native had lived in Wayne County for six months. He was a former employee of Wal-Mart and had worked for Broadhurst Environmental Inc. Survivors are his mother, Maria Delores Gonzalez of Puerto Rico and several siblings including Virgilio G. Hernandez of Jesup. He has been sent to Puerto Rico for funeral services and a burial in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Rinehart and sons Funeral Home of Jesup was in charge of local arrangements.

Vivian J. Hurst Vivian J. Hurst, 49, of Jesup diedFeb. 20, 2004, at Wayne Memorial Hospital following a lengthy illness. She was bornSept. 3, 1954, to Lena Mae Jackson and the late Bunion Jackson of Jesup. She was a member of Morning Glory Baptist Church and was educated in the public school system of Wayne County. She had been employed with the Wayne County Board of Education. Survivors include a son, Al Jernard Jackson of Jesup; a mother, Lena Mae Jackson; six sisters and three brothers-in-law, Linda and James Melton of Jacksonville, Fla., Clara and Frankie Hill of Walthourville, Mary and Willie Reynolds of Screven and Emma Jackson, Teressa Scott and Debra Hillman, all of Jesup; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Charles Jackson, Larry Jackson, Michael and Debra Jackson and Calvin Jackson, all of Jesup; five grandchildren; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be held Feb. 28 at Morning Glory Baptist Church at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Bruce Roundtree officiating. iIntermentwill be in Jesup City Cemetery. Visitation is Feb. 27 from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Royal Funeral Home Chapel. Royal Funeral Home of Jesup is in charge of arrangements.

Audrey H. Johnson

Audrey Harper Johnson, 95, of Brunswick diedFeb. 18, 2004, at Southeast Georgia Regional Medical Center. The Wayne County native had lived in Brunswick most of her life. She was a member of Sterling Church of God and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, W.L. Johnson; a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and the Rev. Rufus Marr; a granddaughter, Karen M. Odum; and a son-in-law, W.C. “Wornel” Anderson. Survivors include her daughter, Mildred J. Anderson of Brunswick; a sister, Jimmie H. Rhodes of Brunswick; three granddaughters, Gigi M. Smith and Veta M. Cannon, both of Brunswick, and Carol J. Crews of Jesup; nine great-grandchildren; and 19 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Feb. 21 at Chapman Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Manning and the Rev. Harold McDonald officiating. Burial followed in Palmetto Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Larry W. Odum II, Kenneth H. “Ken” Tillman, Dusty Evans, George Bennett, Wendell Whitley and John Ellis. Chapman Funeral Home of Brunswick was in charge of arrangements.

William E. King

William Edward King V, stillborn son of Clarissa Jackson and William Edward King IV, diedThursday, Feb. 19, 2004. In addition to his parents, survivors are maternal grandparents, JoAnn Jackson and Randy Roberson of Jesup; paternal grandparents, Dutchin Braisted and William E. King III of Charleston, S.C.; great-grandparents, L.E. and Phyllis Parrish, Ruby and Bennie Harris, the late D.A. “Shank” Roberson, Everett and Vera Johnson and William E. King Jr. and Joy King; and an aunt, Ruby Jackson of Jesup. Graveside funeral services were held Feb. 22 at Raulerson Cemetery in Pierce County with the Rev. Andrew “Drew” O’Neal, 48, of Jesup diedSunday, Feb. 22, 2004, after an extended illness. The Wayne County native was a member of Westside Church of God and a retired truck driver with Murray Logging of Brunswick. Survivors are his wife of 26 years, Linda Gail Strickland O’Neal of Jesup; two daughters and a son-in-law, Leslie O’Neal and Amy and Carlton Kirkland, all of Jesup; his parents, Eddie and Margaret O’Neal of Jesup; three brothers, Lloyd O’Neal, Jack O’Neal and Joel O’Neal, all of Jesup; two sisters, Janet Adams and Brenda O’Neal, both of Jesup; a granddaughter, Amanda Sky Kirkland of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Westside Church of God with the Rev. Elaine Hamilton and the Rev. Wayne Manning officiating. iIntermentwill be in the Westside Church of God Cemetery. Theresa D. Rawls, 46, of Screven diedFeb. 19, 2004, from injuries received in a traffic accident after being transferred to Shands Hospital in Jacksonville, Fla. She was bornAug. 17, 1957, to the late Rogers and Rebecca Wallace of Screven and was educated in the public school system of Wayne County. She was a former employee of Altamaha Nursing Home where she worked as a certified nursing assistant. She was a member of Greater St. James Temple under the leadership of J.N. Green in Screven and later under Bishop A.D. Green. Survivors include her husband, Noah A. Rawls of Screven; two daughters, Asha and Andrea Rawls of Screven; one son, SPC Rodney Rawls of Korea; one grandson, Ahmad Rawls; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Beatrice Vail and Earnestine and Harry McCrary, all of Screven; two brothers, Greg Wallace of Screven and Gary Wallace of Bristol; a mother-in-law, Rita J. Rawls of Screven; a God-daughter, Mekhia Tillery; special friends, Pauline Parker and mother Helen Cromarty; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. Funeral services will be today (Wednesday) at 11 a.m. at Greater St. James Temple Holiness Church with Bishop Arthur Green officiating. iIntermentwill be in Screven City Cemetery.
