Sherman Thomas
Charlie Henry “Sherman” Thomas, 83, of Jefferson, formerly of Athens, died Friday, September 20, 2002.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Thomas was a son of the late Henry and Bessie Byrd Thomas.
Services were held at noon Saturday, September 28, in the chapel of Winfrey’s Mutual Funeral Home, Athens, with Linda Davis officiating.
Mr. Thomas is survived by nieces and nephews.
Winfrey’s Mutual Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sara W. Daniel
Mrs. Sara Wheeler Daniel, 85, of Doraville, died Thursday, September 19, 2002, at Gwinnett Extended Care, Lawrenceville.
Born in Maysville, Jackson County, on April 2, 1917, Mrs. Daniel was the daughter of the late Dan J. Wheeler and the late Ina Doss Wheeler.
She was retired from the Internal Revenue Service, where she was a claims clerk. Mrs. Daniel was preceded in death by her husband, Julian A. Daniel, and three sisters, Edna Mathis, Ora Wheeler and Alda Harbin.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 21, at Oconee Baptist Church, Dry Pond, with the Rev. David Harbin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include daughters, Jerrye, and husband, Dan Lail, Loganville, and Susan Daniel, Atlanta; grandchildren, Marie and Jimmy Leach, Lawrenceville, Ronda Wright, Atlanta, and Phillip Ellis, Doraville; great-grandchildren, Vance Leach, Daniel Leach and Brooke Wright; sisters, Wilda, and husband, Wilburn Martin, Maysville, and Nell Brown, Maysville; brother, Daniel J. Wheeler Jr., Commerce; aunt and uncle, Helen and Homer Howard, Austell; and a number of nieces and nephews.
R.T. Patterson Funeral Home, Norcross, was in charge of arrangements.

Roger D. Cowart
Roger Dale Cowart, 44, of Braselton, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Mandy Cowart, Jefferson; his grandmother, Katie Bruce, Lawrenceville; his parents, Shirley and Waymon Brownlee, Lawrenceville; one sister, Melinda Black, Jefferson; and two nephews, Matthew and Mark Moon, Jefferson.
He was preceded in death by a son, Andrew Cowart, his father, Talvin Cowart, Hiawassee, and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.T. Brownlee, Lawrenceville, and Mamie and Lemuel Cowart, Hiawassee.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced by Memorial Park Funeral Home, Gainesville.

Travis L. Echols
Travis Lee Echols, 56, of Gainesville, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002.
Mr. Echols was born January 5, 1946, in Banks County to the late Andrew and Bertha Shubert Echols. He had lived in Hall County for the past 20 years.
Mr. Echols was a former supervisor with Milliken and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Commerce. He was preceded in death by a brother, the Rev. Doug Echols, and a sister, Lois Baggs.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 3, in the chapel of Hillside Funeral Home, Gainesville, with the Rev. Ralph O. Smith officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Gardens, Gainesville.
Mr. Echols is survived by his wife of 36 years, Annette Echols, Gainesville; daughters, Tammy Peterson and Trica Ritter, both of Gainesville; son, Ricky Echols, Gainesville; sisters, Dean Herbert, Atlanta, Dot Hill and Nancy Ledford, both of Commerce, and Joyce Carter, Clarkesville; brothers, Lloyd Echols, Gillsville, David Echols, Commerce, and Jimmy Echols, Danielsville; and three grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a Clinical Depression Charity.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Hillside Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William L. Bohanan
William Lewis Bohanan, 61, of Bethlehem, died Thursday, September 26, 2002.
Born in Knoxville, Tenn., Mr. Bohanan was the son of the late William L. and Cleo Gladys Bentley Bohanan.
He was retired from General Motors, where he worked as a forklift operator. Mr. Bohanan had also been employed with Atlanta Daries for many years.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sunday, September 29, in Smith Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with Minister Tom Plank officiating. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Mr. Bohanan is survived by his wife, Laverne Bohanan, Bethlehem; sons, Bentley Craig (Benny) Bohanan, Dacula, David Allen Bohanan, Jefferson, and Gregory Dean Bohanan, Bethlehem; sister, Barbara Chessher, Lawrenceville; and two grandchildren.
Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ann G. Smith
Mrs. Ann Gayle Bennett Smith, 32, of Nicholson, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens, following a brief illness.
Mrs. Smith was born March 9, 1970, in Cuthbert, a daughter of Andrew and Gayle Bennett, Georgetown. She was employed as a Library Associate with The University of Georgia Law Library and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Nicholson.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, October 3, at New Hope Baptist Church with the Rev. Mike Stowers officiating. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 4, in Georgetown Cemetery, Georgetown.
Mrs. Smith is survived by her husband, Jeff Smith; brother and sister-in-law, Andrew N. Bennett Jr. and Kim Bennett, Dacula; niece, Elizabeth Bennett; and nephew, Blake Bennett.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to New Hope Baptist Church or to the American Cancer Society.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson.
Evans Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

O.V. Owens
O.V. Owens, 90, of Toccoa, father of Vivian Haynes, Commerce, died Thursday, September 26, 2002.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Owens was a son of the late Vandiver L. and Cora Vaughn Owens. He was the husband of the late Louise Andrews Owens.
Mr. Owens was retired from LeTourneau and WABCO Cos., with 34 years of service, and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and was a member of the Men’s Sunday School Class.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, September 28, at New Hope Baptist church with the Rev. David Sosebee and Clarence Davis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with the Rev. Jewell Gaines officiating. Mr. Owens’ grandsons served as pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to his daughter, include two other daughters, Polly Whitworth and Jessie Martin, both of Toccoa; two sons, Talmadge Owens, Toccoa, and Travis Owens, Canton; 13 grandchildren 21 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild and nieces and nephews.
Acree-Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Tammy Cowart
Mrs. Tamaron Yvonne “Tammy” Lingerfelt Cowart, 31, of Braselton, formerly of Suwanee, died Tuesday, October 1, 2002.
Mrs. Cowart was a native of Fulton County. She received her education at North Gwinnett High School and was employed with Fieldale Poultry Co. in Gainesville. Mrs. Cowart was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Marie Lingerfelt, and her husband, Roger Dale Cowart.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, October 4, in the chapel of Flanigan Funeral Home, Buford, with the Rev. McHoyt Moore officiating. Burial will be in the Old Suwanee Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one brother, Kenneth Lingerfelt, Suwanee; one sister, Sandy Lingerfelt, Suwanee; one nephew, Shaun Brumbalow, Suwanee; one great-niece, Rhiana Brumbalow, Suwanee; special cousin, Randall Lingerfelt, Gainesville; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and relatives.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Flanigan Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Billy Stowe
Billy Stowe, 77, of Maysville, died Monday, December 2, 2002, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce, following an extended illness.
Mr. Stowe was born November 13, 1925, in Jackson County, a son of the late Jesse and Katie Gee Stowe.
A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Stowe retired from the Army on June 12, 1968. He entered the service on November 13, 1943, serving during World War II, the Mission in Congo, the Korean Conflict and Vietnam.
Mr. Stowe earned several awards and decorations, including Good Conduct Medals, the Bronze Star, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal, the Korean Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, the World War II Victory Medal and the Vietnam Service Medal. He received several Letters of Appreciation from commanding officers, peers and patients.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, December 5, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with Minister Don Nix officiating. Burial will be in Evans Memory Gardens, Jefferson. Frankie Anglin, Chris Beatty, Raymond Beatty, Todd Collier, David Stowe, Jimmy Stowe, Carmel Weed and the Military Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Stowe is survived by his wife, Rena K. Stowe, Maysville; daughters, Yvonne Beatty, Jefferson, and Evelene Reidling, Commerce; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Nancy Stowe, Montgomery, Ala.; grandchildren, April Goodrich, Cathy Reidling, Suzy Weed, Rebecca Collier, Jennifer Stowe, Chris Beatty, Tracey Anglin and Raymond Beatty; and 10 great-grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Disabled American Veterans, National Headquarters, P.O. Box 14301, Cincinnati, Ohio 45250-0303.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Junior ‘Bug’ Grizzle
Roy Junior “Bug” Grizzle, 58, of Royston, died Monday, December 2, 2002, at Cobb Memorial Hospital, Royston.
Mr. Grizzle was born April 13, 1944, in Franklin County, a son of the late Verlin Wilson and Inez Wood Grizzle.
He was a construction and textile worker and was a member of Gordon Church. Mr. Grizzle was preceded in death by a brother, Delmer Grizzle.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 5, at Gordon Church with the Rev. Larry Ivey officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Survivors include a daughter, Amanda K. Grizzle, Lavonia; step-daughter, Elizabeth Winser, Atlanta; step-sons, Edward Winser, Charlotte, N.C., and Larry Ivey, Jefferson; sisters, Louise Fann and Grace Cary, both of Royston, and Willene Hart, Dalton; and brothers, Billy Ray Grizzle, Danielsville, and Stanley Grizzle, Royston.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The family is at the residence of Stanley and Sandra Grizzle, 4197 Careytown Road, Royston.
