Eva E. Ray
Mrs. Eva Elisabeth Ray, 71, of Commerce, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Ray was born May 27, 1931, in Germany, a daughter of Edmund and Barbara Felsheim Kunkel.
She was a homemaker and of the Catholic denomination. Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by her husband, Mack J. Ray.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, February 2, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Verlin Reece officiating.
Mrs. Ray is survived by a brother, Hans Felsheim, Canada; and a sister, Marianne Schachner, Germany.
Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Bertha S. Stockton
Mrs. Bertha Street Stockton, 86, of Franklin, N.C., died Sunday, February 2, 2003.
A native of Greenville, Tenn., Mrs. Stockton was a daughter of the late Bob and Velma Rowland Street.
She was retired from Clayburn Manufacturing, where she was employed as a machine operator, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she served as a former Sunday School teacher.
Mrs. Stockton was preceded in death by her husband, Archie C. Stockton, and a brother, Eston Street.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, February 4, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with the Revs. Josh Brooks and Eddie Stillwell officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law, Geraldine and Jesse Cunningham and Brenda and Sam Bowers, all of Franklin, N.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Dorothy Stockton, Alto; sisters, Evelyn Crowe and Jessie Chapman, both of Pickens, S.C.; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, four step-grandchildren, six step-great-grandchildren and six step-great-great-grandchildren.

Sharon L. Underwood
Mrs. Sharon Lynn Minor Underwood, 53, of Jefferson, died Thursday, January 30, 2003, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Underwood was born April 20, 1949, in Duvall County, Fla. She was the daughter of the late Clarence and Emmaline Smith Minor.
Mrs. Underwood was employed as a nursing assistant and was a member of Oconee Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, February 1, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. Charles Reese officiating. Burial was in the Homer Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Mrs. Underwood is survived by her husband, P.A. Underwood, Jefferson; one son, Kevin Underwood, Huntsville, Ala.; and two grandchildren.
Little-Ward Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Sandra Owens
Mrs. Sandra Ann Alewine Owens, 47, of Commerce, died Monday, January 27, 2003.
A native of Clarke County, Mrs. Owens was a daughter of Tony and Dorothy Alewine, Athens.
She was a lifelong resident of the area and was formerly employed with Gateway Restaurant.
A memorial service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, January 31, in the chapel of Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, Athens, with the Rev. Clay Huff officiating.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include her husband, Gilbert Owens; son, Montana Mace, Orlando, Fla.; sisters, Rose Patterson and Chris Garrison, both of Hull; and brothers, Mike Alewine, Ricky Alewine and Paul Alewine, all of Athens.
Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, was in charge of arrangements.

Violet B. Gribble
Mrs. Violet B. Swaim Gribble, 84, of Demorest, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at a private nursing home following an extended illness.
Mrs. Gribble was born in Clay County, N.C., on December 8, 1918. She was a daughter of the late Benjamin Eugene and Zennia Roberson Swaim.
Mrs. Gribble was a homemaker and a member of Clarkesville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herman W. Gribble.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, February 3, at Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, Demorest, with the Rev. Joy Brown officiating. Burial was in Yonah Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include one daughter, Martha Williams, Demorest; one son, Roger Gribble, Demorest; one sister, Willa Mae Wyer, Baldwin; two brothers, Ray Swaim, Hayesville, N.C., and Frank Swaim, Cornelia; and four grandchildren, Tammy Carter, Lauren Fair, Whitney Gribble and Jason Williams.
Whitfield Funeral Home, North Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

James L. ‘Jake’ Allen
James L. “Jake” Allen, 61, of Batesville, died Monday, February 3, 2003, at his residence.
Mr. Allen was born in Habersham County on September 10, 1941. He was formerly employed with Scovill Manufacturing Company and was a member of Providence Baptist Church, of the Batesville Community.
Mr. Allen was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Allen.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, February 5, at Providence Baptist Church with the Revs. Brion Williams and J.R. Elrod officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Allen is survived by his wife, Nancy Leger Allen, Toccoa; his parents, Fred T. and Eunice Wood Allen, Batesville; one daughter, Kay Miller, Batesville; one son, Sean Allen, Batesville; one step-daughter, Sherry Brady, Toccoa; two step-sons, Mike Gallo, Seneca, S.C., and Thomas Gallo, Toccoa; two sisters, Dorothy Thompson, Clarkesville, and Lavalle Nix, Turnerville; four brothers, Thurman Allen and David O. Allen, both of Demorest, Donald Allen, Clarkesville, and Jeff Allen, Batesville; two grandchildren, eight step-grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Memorials may be made to The Matthew Miller Fund, 3715 Riverbend Road, Demorest, GA 30535.

Joyce A. Stow
Mrs. Joyce Ann Jones Stow, 60, of Maysville, died Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at her residence following an extended illness.
Mrs. Stow was born May 19, 1942, in St. Louis, Mo., a daughter of the late Alvin and Gertrude Knight Jones.
She was a homemaker and a member of Jefferson Pentecostal Church.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, February 6, at Jefferson Pentecostal Church with Pastor Gary Hosch and Brother Pierce Ashmore officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Mrs. Stow is survived by her husband, Arthur Wilburn Stow, Maysville; one daughter, Ella Mae Myers, Gainesville; two sons, Arthur Wilburn Stow Jr., Bradenton, Fla., and Donald Douglas Stow, Maysville; four brothers, Daniel Jones and David Jones, both of Gainesville, Fred Jones, Cleveland, and Paul Jones, Oakwood; five sisters, Janet Pierce, Gainesville, Ruby Smith and Cathy Sturgill, both of Lula, and Wanda Stewart and Mary Turpin, both of Flowery Branch; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson.
Evans Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jessie Howe
Mrs. Jessie Shirley Howe, 101, of Carnesville, died Thursday, January 23, 2003, at Young at Hart Personal Care Home, Carnesville.
Mrs. Howe was born March 10, 1901, in Franklin County, a daughter of the late Thomas and Harriett Sanders Shirley.
She attended Piedmont College and was a teacher. Mrs. Howe was also a homemaker and a member of Cross Roads Baptist Church, the Winsome Sunday Class and the Carnesville Women’s Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Lee “Bob” Howe, a son, Robert Lee “Bobby” Howe Jr., a great-grandson, Justin Howe, and a brother, W.L. Shirley.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 25, at Cross Roads Baptist Church with the Revs. Michael Bell and Bill Beshears officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mrs. Howe is survived by one daughter, Winifred Howe Payne; five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Cross Roads Baptist Church Building Fund, 16144 GA Hwy. 59, Carnesville, GA 30521.

William R. Mitchell
William Robert Mitchell, 85, of Commerce, died Monday, February 3, 2003, at St. Mary’s Hospital, Athens.
Mr. Mitchell was born April 8, 1917, in Lee County, Fla. He was a son of the late Robert and Lois Swint Mitchell.
Mr. Mitchell was a retired LP Gas serviceman and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Commerce. He was also a member of Saints Alive, the American Legion and the Elks Lodge, of Ft. Myers, Fla. Mr. Mitchell was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, February 6, in the chapel of Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Rev. David Bowen officiating. Burial will be in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mr. Mitchell is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean Raney Mitchell, Commerce; a daughter, Martha Cartee, Commerce; and a niece, Anne Daves, Chuluota, Fla.
The family will receive friends from noon until 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Little-Ward Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Ellison
Mrs. Elizabeth “Liz” Clough Ellison, 36, of Mt. Airy, died Tuesday, January 28, 2003.
Mrs. Ellison was born in Stafford County, Va., on October 10, 1966. She was employed as the front end manager at Ingles in Clarkesville, and was of the Baptist denomination.
“She loved computers and crafts,” said family members.
Mrs. Ellison was preceded in death by her father, Leon Melvin Clough Jr.
Funeral services were held at 4 p.m. Friday, January 31, in the chapel of McGahee-Griffin & Stewart Funeral Home, Cornelia, with the Rev. J.R. Elrod officiating. Burial was in the Hazel Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Survivors include one daughter, Krystal Kinsell, Ellenton, Fla.; one son, Josh Kinsell, Mt. Airy; mother and step-father, Carol and John Franklin, Murphy, N.C.; brother, Leon Melvin Clough III, Orlando, Fla.; aunt and uncle-in-law, Maravene and Clay Osgood, Sarasota, Fla.; and aunt, Brenda Clough, Sarasota, Fla.
Memorials may be made to the “Benefit Fund for Josh Kinsell,” c/o Community Bank & Trust, P.O. Box 1900, Cornelia, GA 30531, Attn: Jennifer Barrs.
