Hoyt L. Holcomb
Hoyt Lee "Buck" Holcomb, 81, of Carlton, died Thursday, December 30, 1999.
A native of Ila, Mr. Holcomb was a son of the late Otta Holcomb and Lou Belia Hardy Holcomb.
He was a World War II veteran and had been employed as a building contractor. Mr. Holcomb was of the Baptist denomination.
Graveside services were held Saturday, January 1, 2000, in Forest Hills Memorial Park with the Rev. Melvin Green officiating.
Survivors include his wife, Kathryn Nix Holcomb; one daughter, Christa Brock, Colbert; three sisters, Annie Lou Capes, Carlton, Inez Kellum, Nicholson, and Lorene Craft, Orlando, Fla.; and one granddaughter.
Berry Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

George B. Smith
George Beasley Smith died Thursday, December 30, 1999.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late George Gratton and May Belle Hargrove Smith.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served with the U.S. Navy. Mr. Smith owned and operated a gas station and was a member of Joy Baptist Church, Hull, where he was a member of the Men's Sunday School Class.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 2, 2000, in the chapel of Bridges Funeral Home, Athens, with the Revs. Barry Black and Ray Jenkins officiating. Randy Power, Ricky Power, Steve W. Smith, Danny Hanley, David Kilgore and Weldon Hardman served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Men's Sunday School Class of Joy Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Hardman Smith; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dianne Smith, Athens, and Charles and Dawn Smith, Danielsville; sister, Jean Moore, Stephens; sister and brother-in-law, Catherine S. and Knox Brackett Jr., Athens; brother and sister-in-law, H. Carlton and Sybil Smith, Athens; four grandchildren, Staci and Paige Smith, both of Athens, and Christopher and Melissa Smith, both of Danielsville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Joy Baptist Church, Hull, or to Camp Maranatha, P.O. Box 53, Ila, GA 30647.
Bridges Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Charles G. Looney
Charles G. Looney, 64, of Lavonia, died Saturday, January 1, 2000.
Mr. Looney was born in Anderson, S.C., a son of the late Robert L. Looney and Mary Ertchgerber.
He was a retired school bus driver for Oglethorpe Chapel and was a member of Sonlight Baptist Church.
Mr. Looney was preceded in death by his wife, Fannie Mae McDonald Looney.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 3, at Sonlight Baptist Church with the Rev. Dan Corbitt officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Timothy Looney, David Looney, Vernon McDonald, Steve McDonald, Tim Smith and Gerald Brown served as pallbearers.
Survivors include one daughter, Lois Looney, Sandy Cross; two sons, Jacky Looney, Danielsville, Johnny Looney, Winterville; two sisters, Gladys Gabriel, Auburn, and Edna Thompson, Athens; two brothers, Robert L. Looney Jr., Anderson, S.C., and Ray H. Looney, Athens; and five grandchildren.
Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, Oglethorpe Chapel, was in charge of arrangements.

Eliza F. Lord
Mrs. Eliza Fannie Lee Lord, 86, of Danielsville, died Friday, December 31, 1999.
Mrs. Lord was born March 29, 1913, a daughter of the late Charlie and Nellie Jones.
She was a homemaker and of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Lord was preceded in death by her husband, Hope Lord, two sons, Grady Lord and James Lord, and a daughter, Evelyn Strickland.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 3, 2000, at Providence Baptist Church with the Rev. David Strickland officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Nathan Lord, Gregory Lord, Marlon Hardy, Charles Strickland Jr., Lee Giddeons and Randy Lord served as pallbearers.
Survivors include one daughter, Carolyn Hardy, Commerce; two sons, David Lord, Danielsville, and Roy Lord, Ila; one sister, Ruby Allen, Ila; one brother, Weldon Jones, Commerce; 23 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.
Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, was in charge of arrangements.

Robert A. Compton
Robert Allen Compton, 85, of Hull, died Sunday, January 2, 2000.
Mr. Compton was born in Madison County, a son of the late James Agustus and Zell Parham Compton.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, having served during World War II, and worked as a mechanic with Colbert Manufacturing. Mr. Compton was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Guy Compton and Talmadge Compton, and one sister, Ruby Compton.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, January 4, at Oak Grove Baptist Church with the Revs. James Greeson and James Page officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Compton's nephews served as pallbearers.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie Patterson Compton; one sister, Erma Lou Brewer, Bogart; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oak Grove Baptist Church cemetery Fund, c/o Fred Compton, Box 9024 Hwy. 172, Comer, GA 30629.

Carolyn F. Bales
Mrs. Carolyn Faye McAllister Bales, 71, of Athens, died Wednesday, December 29, 1999.
Mrs. Bales was born in Greene County, a daughter of the late Charlie and Clyde Patridge McAllister.
She had worked in the textile industry and was a member of the First Apostolic Church of Bishop.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 31, at the First Apostolic Church of Bishop with the Revs. Curtis Hammond and Tim Boswell officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Danny Bales, Mike Tittle, Johnny Tittle, Billy Ray Allen, Kenny Handley and Donnie Angel served as pallbearers.
Survivors include her husband, Edward Bales Jr.; three daughters, Bonnie Faye Allen, Colbert, Susan Angel, Bishop, and Melissa Handley, Whitehall; one step-daughter, Barbara Ann Bales, Athens; three sons, Mike Tittle, Colbert, Johnny Tittle, Winder, and Danny Bales, Athens; three sisters, Jenny Dooley, Patricia Tanksley and Nell Burnette, all of Watkinsville; three brothers, Franklin McAllister, Whitehall, Robert McAllister, Athens, and Jessie McAllister, Winder; 16 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Brown Funeral Home, Danielsville, was in charge of arrangements.

Larry S. Freeman
Larry S. Freeman, 57, of Commerce, died Wednesday, December 29, 1999.
A native of Madison County, Mr. Freeman was a son of Gussie Mae Irvin Freeman, Danielsville, and the late Samuel B. Freeman.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was the owner of Freeman Refrigeration Service. Mr. Freeman was a member of Trinity Baptist Church and was an active participant in mission trips to Haiti.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 31, at Trinity Baptist Church with the Revs. Dan May and James "Topper" Brock Jr. officiating. Burial was in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Linda Freeman; daughter, Christy Freeman, Commerce; daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and David Coile, Hull; sister and brother-in-law, Linda Freeman Green and Ray Green, Danielsville; grandson, Garrett Coile; and four nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Baskin 'n Sonshine Ministries, c/o Trinity Baptist Church, Hwy. 29 North, Danielsville, GA 30633.

Emory S. Howard
Emory Spear Howard, 77, of Colbert, died Thursday, December 30, 1999.
A native of Oglethorpe County, Mr. Howard was a son of the late George and Lula Smith Howard.
He was retired from the poultry industry.
Funeral services were held Sunday, January 2, 2000, at Collier Baptist Church with the Rev. Terry Smith officiating. Burial was in the Winterville Cemetery.
Mr. Howard is survived by an aunt and several cousins.

Charles W. Ellis Jr.
Charles William Ellis Jr., 66, of Athens, died Tuesday, December 28, 1999.
Mr. Ellis was a son of Lillie Mae Howard and the late Charles Ellis Sr.
He worked as a custodian with the University of Georgia.
Funeral services were held Friday, December 31, in the chapel of Mack & Payne Funeral Home with Overseer Debra Price officiating. Burial was in East Memorial Cemetery.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include his wife, Dorothy Ellis; five daughters, Ester Ellis, Sandra Ellis, Charlotte Hull and Sarah Smith, all of Athens, and Cynthia Ellis, Hull; two sons, Jessie Ellis and Jimmy Charles Ellis, both of Hull; four step-daughters, Elizabeth Savage and Joan Davis, both of Athens, and Kimberly Savage and Sharon Savage, both of Atlanta; two step-sons, David Savage and Hamilton Savage, both of Athens; four sisters, Lizzie Mae Browner, Winterville, and Rosa Lee Harris, Reava Smith and Janie Mae Bailey, all of Athens; and one brother, Eddie Roy Ellis, Athens.
Mack & Payne Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. BALES
Grey Hill cemetery rites
MAYSVILLE - Mrs. Ruby S. Bales, 71, died Monday, August 7, 2000, at BJC Hospital, Commerce.
Mrs. Bales was born July 15, 1929, a daughter of the late Wiley and Lena Baker Redmon.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bill Bales.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 9, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with the Revs. Jeff Appling and Swayne Carlan officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Mrs. Bales is survived by two sisters, Imogene Redmon and Viola Redmon, both of Maysville; and a number of nephews.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
