MR. MCELROY
U.S. Army, Navy veteran
ATHENS - James Ronald "Ron" McElroy died Thursday, August 17, 2000.
A native of Madison County, Mr. McElroy was a son of J.C. McElroy, Danielsville, and the late Johnnie Merle Booth McElroy.
He served in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy and retired from Westclox in Athens, following 21 years of service. Mr. McElroy was a member of Prince Avenue Baptist Church, where he served as an usher.
Funeral services were held Sunday, August 20, at Prince Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Bill Ricketts, John Verschuren and Howard Greer officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Dennis Whitfield, Chuck Weaber, Wayne Lyle, Mike Almond, Todd McElroy and Bob Turner served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer was Dr. John Davis.
Survivors, in addition to his father, include his wife, Shari R. McElroy; one sister, Mary Ellen Simms, Danielsville; two brothers, Gene O. McElroy, Jefferson, and Troy L. McElroy, Danielsville; two nieces, four nephews, one great-niece, one great-nephew and two godchildren, Katie Sinclair and Megan Teeuwen, both of Versailles, Mo.
Memorials may be made to the Prince Avenue Baptist Church Benevolent Fund, P.O. Box 1112, Athens, GA 30603.
Bernstein Funeral Home, Athens, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. BENTON
Blue Bell Mfg. retiree
COMMERCE - Ollie Samuel Benton, 96, died Wednesday, August 16, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mr. Benton was born April 2, 1904, a son of the late Wiley and Maggie Ingram Benton.
He was retired from Blue Bell Manufacturing Company.
Mr. Benton was preceded in death by his first wife, Viola Holland Benton, and his second wife, Edna Langston Benton.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 18, in the chapel of Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, with Dr. Kent Cranford and the Rev. Buhl Cummings officiating. Burial was in Grey Hill Cemetery, Commerce.
Survivors include three daughters, Eloise Benton, Rex, Charlotte Benton, Stone Mountain, and Sammy Benton Hunt, Forest Park; one brother, Verner Benton, Commerce; five grandchildren, Lynn, Terry and Gerald Hunt, Jack Hardman and Martha Bowler; and a number of great-grandchildren.
Ivie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. BOND
Mother of eight
DANIELSVILLE - Mrs. Lucy C. Bond, 86, died Saturday, August 19, 2000, at BJC Medical Center, Commerce.
Mrs. Bond was born October 26, 1913, a daughter of Andrew Cox and the late Ethelene Shields Cox.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alton L. Bond.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 21, at Mt. Zion Baptist church with the Revs. Douglas Duncan, John Mitchell and Hilton Purvis officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs. Bond's grandsons served as pallbearers.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include seven sons, Bobby D. Bond and Kenneth G. Bond, both of Comer, Donald A. Bond, Larry N. Bond and Morris E. Bond, all of Danielsville, and Douglas Bond and Willard Ray Bond, both of Commerce; one daughter, Glenda Shirley, Anderson, S.C.; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Ivie Funeral Home, Commerce, was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. BENTON
Conference coordinator
ATHENS - Mrs. Yvonne Jordan Benton, 64, died Wednesday, August 16, 2000.
A native of Franklin County, Mrs. Benton was a daughter of the late Rev. Jesse Lee and Mary Ware Jordan.
She was conference coordinator with UGA Institute of Higher Education and was a member of Christian Life Worship Center.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 18, at Christian Life Worship Center with the Rev. John W. Ingham officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Memorial Park. Harold Benton Jr., Bill Benton, David Benton, Brad Walters, Mac Walters and Mark Walters served as pallbearers. Mrs. Benton's grandsons, Jesse David Benton and Samuel David Benton, served as honorary pallbearers.
Mrs. Benton is survived by her husband, Harold L. Benton; sons and daughters-in-law, Harold L. Jr. and Diana Benton, Lawrenceville, Bill and Angela Benton, Ila, and David and Cindy Benton, Jefferson; sister and brother-in-law, Becky and Donald Walters, Winterville; and three grandchildren, J.D. Benton, S.D. Benton and Emma Grace Benton.
Memorials may be made to the American Liver Foundation, Georgia Chapter, 1201 Clairmont Road, Suite 120, Decatur, GA 30030.
Lord & Stephens Funeral Home, East, was in charge of arrangements.

MR. WHITLOCK
U.S. Army veteran
STATHAM - Claude "Harmon" Whitlock, 72, died Thursday, August 17, 2000, at his residence.
A native of Hall County, Mr. Whitlock was a son of the late Jacob Josiah Whitlock and Lille Mae Covington Whitlock.
He was a U.S. Army veteran and had been employed by Bi-Lo Grocery where he worked in the meat department. Mr. Whitlock was a member of Statham First Baptist Church.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 19, in Smith's Memory Chapel of Smith Funeral Home, Winder, with the Revs. Gordon Thornton and Terry Wooford and Dr. Stan Coley officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens. Mr. Whitlock's nephews served as pallbearers, while members of the Statham First Baptist Church Adult Sunday School Class served as honorary pallbearers.
Mr. Whitlock is survived by his wife, Faye Baker Whitlock; one daughter, Michelle Ruark, Statham; one step-daughter, Terri Lynn Jones, Statham; two step-sons, Tony Johnson, Statham, and Mike Johnson, Winder; three brothers, Austin Whitlock, Chickamauga, James Whitlock, Belton, S.C., and Ernest Whitlock, Commerce; and five grandchildren, Jason, Jennifer and Jodi Johnson and Jake and Ashleigh Ruark.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Statham First Baptist Church, 1914 Broad Street, Statham, GA 30666.
Smith Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. MOBLEY
Retired inspector
WINDER - Mrs. Frances Mobley, 76, died August 16, 2000.
Born in Greene County, Mrs. Mobley was a daughter of the late Grady and Maxie Jackson Griffeth.
She was a former resident of Oconee County and had resided in Winder since 1947. Mrs. Mobley was a retired inspector with Barrow Manufacturing Company and was a member of The Winder First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held Friday, August 18, in the chapel of Carter Funeral Home, Winder, with the Rev. Terry Tippins officiating. Burial was in Barrow Memorial Gardens.
Mrs. Mobley is survived by her husband, Harold Mobley; daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine and Robert McCain, Winder, and Denise and Neill Fuller, Columbus; grandchildren, Todd and Patti Jo McCain and Lisa and Jason Hester, all of Winder, and Will Fuller and Lauren Fuller, both of Columbus; and five great-grandchildren.
Carter Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

MRS. HARBIN
Jackson County native
MARIETTA - Mrs. Elizabeth Jane Kent Harbin, 85, died Tuesday, August 22, 2000, at Kennestone Hospital, Marietta, following an extended illness.
Mrs. Harbin was born in Jackson County, a daughter of the late Walter and Pearl Smith Kent.
She was retired from the textile industry and was a member of Sandy Plains Baptist Church, Marietta.
Mrs. Harbin was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Harbin.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, August 24, in the chapel of Evans Funeral Home, Jefferson, with the Rev. Donald Mason officiating. Burial will be in Woodbine Cemetery. Bobby Veal, Chris Seagraves, Donald Kent, Doug Kent, Gerald Matthews and Larry Reynolds will serve as pallbearers.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn Harbin and Deborah Harbin, both of Marietta; one sister, Frances Croy, Monroe; three brothers, Grover Kent, Harold Kent and Isaac Kent, all of Gainesville.
The family was to have received friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Evans Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MR. REYNOLDS
Mechanic
COMMERCE - Roy Arnold Reynolds died Tuesday, August 22, 2000, at his residence.
Mr. Reynolds was born January 14, 1943, in Fulton County. He was a son of the late Roy A. Reynolds Sr. and the late Vivian Jeanette Stephens Reynolds.
Mr. Reynolds was retired from the United States Postal Service, where he was a building equipment mechanic. He attended Grove Level Baptist Church, Maysville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 24, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Chris Pritchett officiating. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial Gardens, Commerce. Greg Scott, Bob Morrow, Ralph Eten, Billy Compton, Larry White and Kevin White will serve as pallbearers.
Mr. Reynolds is survived by his wife, Eleanor Octavia DeLong Reynolds; three daughters, Melody Scott, Franklin Springs, Misty McMorrow, Commerce, and Monya Compton, Lawrenceville; one sister, Jeanette White, Tucker; and three grandchildren, Eric and Brian Scott, both of Franklin Springs, and Sarah Pippin, Commerce.
The family was to have received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Pruitt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

MR. BEARD
Retired truck driver
DANIELSVILLE - John Henry Beard, 94, died Saturday, August 19, 2000, at Brown Memorial Convalescent Center in Royston.
Mr. Beard was born December 18, 1905, a son of the late Sam Easton and Eugenia Collins Beard.
He was a retired truck driver and farmer and was of the Holiness denomination. Mr. Beard was preceded in death by his wife, Ina Watson Beard, four brothers, Nelson, DuPree, Jim and Reese Beard, and three sisters, Ruby Hughes, Eudie Gunnells and Janie Carey. He was the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 21, in the chapel of Pruitt Funeral Home, Royston, with the Rev. Dennis Kesler officiating. Burial was in the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Walter Walls, Danielsville; three grandchildren, Terry and Sam Walls and Polly Penson, all of Danielsville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Pruitt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
