Jackie Brown
Jackie Brown, 66, died Thursday, October 23, 2003, at home under the care of hospice. The Emanuel Co. native lived most of his life in Candler Co. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1961 and retired after 20 years. He was a nuclear power plant instructor at several U.S. plants for the next 20 years. He returned to Metter in 1987 and was a member of Cedar Street Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Cindy Brown of Metter; three sons, Keith Brown of Statesboro, Randy Schmidt of Oklahoma and Eddie Brown of New York; one daughter, Nancy Brown of Statesboro; his mother, Madeline Brown of Metter; one brother, Dennis Brown of North Carolina; and one sister, Joyce Windle of Kentucky.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, at 4 p.m. at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with burial in Lake Cemetery.

William Marshall O’Connell
William Marshall O’Connell, 51, died Friday, October 24, 2003, in Aiken, S.C. He was preceded in death by his parents, William F. O’Connell and Verda Coleman O’Connell.
He is survived by his uncle, Ranford Coleman of Atlanta; aunts, Helen C. Robison of Vidalia and Ann C. Bryant of Lyons; and several cousins.
Graveside funeral services with Rev. Walter Leverett were held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Sunlight Cemetery in Cobbtown.
Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Cobbtown, was in charge of arrangements.

Amanda Nicole Collins
Amanda Nicole Collins, 17, died Wednesday, October 22, 2003, from injuries sustained in a car accident. Born in Tampa, FL, she lived most of her life in Candler Co. She was a student at Ogeechee Tech, a member of 4-H Club and loved horses. She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Cecil Collins.
She is survived by her parents, Melissa C. and Charles Driggers; a son, T.J. NeSmith; fiancé Jonathan NeSmith; two brothers, Steven Collins and Charles Driggers; five sisters, Amanda Driggers, Brittany Driggers, Charlotte Driggers, Dana Driggers and Timrah Driggers; a maternal grandmother and step-grandfather, Peggy C. and Larry Lanier, all of Metter.
Graveside services were held on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Cool Spring Cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to Candler Co. 4-H Club.

Ruby Portwood Braswell
Ruby Portwood Braswell, 93, died Oct. 28, 2003. She was a resident of Metter Nursing Home.
A native of Emanuel County, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Nannie Hayes Portwood. She was the wife of the late Ben B. Braswell and a homemaker that raised her children in the ways of the Lord. She had lived in Twin City for the last 40 years and was a member of First Baptist Church for 35 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, two daughters, Dorothy Braswell and Francis Braswell, a son, James A. Braswell, and a grandson, Anthony Bailey Braswell.
She is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Sybil and J. E. Flanders of Savannah; a daughter, Billie Donaldson of Twin City; sons and daughters-in-law, David and Geneva Braswell, Larry and Christine Braswell, all of Twin City, Donald and Virginia Braswell of Metter, Rondy and Ann Braswell of Townsend, and Ted and June Braswell of Statesboro; 24 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday at 3 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Twin City, with burial in Swainsboro City Cemetery. Grandsons served as pallbearers.
The Rev. Franklin Sasser officiated, assisted by the Revs. Charles E. Beasley, Jim Wilson and Bobby Braswell.
Wood Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Grace Jarrell Brown
Grace Jarrell Brown, 80, of Guyton died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Candler County Hospital.
Born in Tattnall County, she was a retired seamstress and a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church in Collins.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Louis Newsome of Harlem; sons and a daughter-in-law, John E. Brown of Guyton and Jerry and Cleone Brown of Metter; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Sunday at 3 p.m. in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with the Rev. Walter Jarrell officiating. Burial was in Little Flock Cemetery.

Sam Coney
Sam Coney, 81, of Metter died Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, in Metter Nursing Home.
The Candler County native was a member of Mercer Grove Missionary Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army.
He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Annie Mae and Leroy Moore of Metter; a son and daughter-in-law, Heywood and Eloise Wiggins of Statesboro; two adopted daughters, Pauline Booker and Joreda Booker, both of Stillmore; 29 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Orita Coney of Savannah; a brother-in-law, Henderson Dunlap Sr. of Metter; and several other relatives.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 8, at Mercer Grove Missionary Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery.

Katherine Ophelia Smith
Katherine Ophelia Smith, 84 of Claxton died on November 3, 2003, at Candler General Hospital in Savannah. She was preceded in death by her husband John O. Smith.
She is survived by one daughter, Nancy Bellamy of Koewee, S.C.; one brother, Rev. David Neese of High Point, N.C.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held on Thursday in the chapel of Wood Funeral Home with Rev. Fred Pifer officiating. Burial was in the Old Anderson Cemetery in Tattnall Couny.

Ethel Freeman
Ethel Freeman died Monday, November 3, 2003, at Metter Nursing Home after an extended illness. The Emanuel County native lived in Candler County for more than 50 years. She was a member of Treemont Temple Baptist Church.
Survivors include two sons, Bobby Wilson of Flushing, N.Y. and Lester Coleman of Swainsboro; one daughter, Ernestine Wadley of Metter; two nieces, Ruby Fields and Roberta Williams, both of Swainsboro; one nephew, Homer Williams of Swainsboro; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; ten great-great-grandchildren; several other relatives and friends.
The funeral service was held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Treemont Temple Baptist Church, with burial in the Swainsboro City Cemetery.
Whitaker Funeral Home of Metter was in charge of arrangements.

Harold Jerome “Jerry” Aldrich
Harold Jerome “Jerry” Aldrich, 42, of Metter, died on November 10, 2003, at his residence. He was a heavy equipment operator for Coursey Construction Co.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Aldrich of Metter; sons and daughter-in-law, Jeremy and Kimberly Aldrich of Metter and Justin Aldrich of Metter; one sister, Melesia Becerra of Metter; his parents, Harold and Jannette Aldrich of Metter; one grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Tim Wells, Wade Donaldson, Mike Aldrich, Mark Steven Loben, Rawleigh Donaldson and Freddy Aldrich. Honorary pallbearers will be Sidney Calvert and David Coursey.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday (today) at 2 p.m. at Rosemary Primitive Baptist Church with burial to follow in the Aldrich Family Cemetery.
Wood Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Eugene “Gene” Walton Rowinsky
Eugene “Gene” Walton Rowinsky, 77, of Metter died Monday at home. He moved to Metter in 1996 from Ohio. His military career including serving in the Navy, Army, Merchant Marines and Coast Guard and was a veteran of World War II. He was a machinist and a member of Excelsior Baptist Church and an avid fisherman.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane Rowinsky of Metter; three sons, Bruce Rowinsky of Mission Hill, CA and Donny Rowinsky of Youngstown, OH and Charles Upton of Metter; five daughters, Susan Foster of Andalusia, AL, Sylvia Clark of Burbank, OH, Sandy Rhodes of Broomfield, OH, Cheri Kemble of Revenna, OH and Diana Lattimer of Metter; brother, Walter Hay of Brunswick, OH; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, at 7 p.m. at his residence with Rev. Robert Ferrell officiating.

Henry W. Moore
Henry W. Moore of Lyons died Monday, November 3, 2003, in Metter after an extended illness.
He was born and raised in Turner County and moved to Lyons in 1954. He was in law enforcement for 28 years before retiring in 1995. A member of Georgia Peace Officers Association and Sheriff’s Association, he was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Jean H. Moore of Lyons; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kathy and Tony Beasley of Metter and Pamela Pruitt of Lyons; three sons, Terry Moore, Chris Moore and Tony Moore, all of Lyons; four sisters, Virgie Goode of Florida, Wilma Meadows and Joyce LeBlanc of Ashburn, and Lydia Newman of Fayette, Al.; two brothers, Roy Moore of Tifton and Wyman Moore of Fayette, Al.; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Murchison Funeral Home in Vidalia with the Rev. Charles Beasley and Joe Chancey officiating. Burial followed at Mt. Moriah Cemetery near Lyons.
Pallbearers were Danny Coleman, Wayne Dees, Archie Hayes, Danny Taylor, Wallace Thompson and Gerald Todd. Honorary pallbearers were members of Toombs County Law Enforcement.
Murchison Funeral Home of Vidalia was in charge of arrangements.

Ray J. Collins
Ray J. Collins, 79, of Metter, died October 23, 2003, in Panama City, FL. He was born in Aline, the youngest of the late Ben Levy and Bessie Collins. He was predeceased by two brothers and a sister, Romie, Ralph and Mildred. They lived on the family farm purchased in the 1920s. He was an accomplished carpenter working in finished carpentry. He served in the Marine Corps for 20 years, the Air Force for seven years and became a truck driver for the next 20 years. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and DAV.
He is survived by his wife of ten years, Shirley Collins; his children, Jerry Collins of Macon, Robert Collins of Huntington Beach, CA, Karen Indendi of Santa Maria, CA, Zachary Collins, Ray Collins Jr. and Michael Collins, all of Metter, Susan Clause of OH, Terry Jo and Debbie Harper of Chesapeake Bay, VA, Robert and Cindy Myers, Nancy and Clay Hecherd and Dianne and Todd Brian, all of Panama City, FL; numerous nieces and nephews, including John and Peggy Collins of Tampa, FL; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, November 19, at Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, with Rev. Charles Beasley officiating.

Jonathan Andres Gomez-Calvo
Infant Jonathan Andres Gomez-Calvo, 3-months, died Wednesday, November 5, 2003, at his home.
He is survived by his parents, Mateo Gomez-Diego and Clara Luz Calvo-Vazques; maternal grandparents, Jose Angel Calvo and Maria Del Carmen-Vazques; paternal grandparents, Andres Gomez-Juan and Ana Diego; great-grandmothers, Amparo Vazquez and Maria Juan.
Graveside funeral services were held Sunday, at 3:30 p.m. at Lake Cemetery.
Kennedy-Morgan Funeral Homes, Hooks Chapel, of Metter was in charge of arrangements.
