Mr. William Lamar Allen, 50, of Newnan, died Sunday, January 2, 2000 at Portsbridge Hospice Care.

Mr. Allen was born December 18, 1949 in Fulton County, Ga. to O. W. Allen Sr. and Jewel Lee Schnall. He was disabled and was of the Baptist faith.

A funeral will be held at Hillcrest Chapel on Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Terry Calhoun officiating. Burial will be at Calvary Baptist Church.

Pallbearers will be Scott Allen, Corey Allen, Patrick Allen, Ryan Allen, Coty Allen, Ricky Garland, Scott McDill and Olin Brown.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Allen of Newnan; sons, Richi Allen of Villa Rica and Brett Allen of Douglasville, Ga.; sister, Martha Franklin of Panacea, Florida; brothers, Larry Allen of Austell, Ga. and J. C. Allen of Temple, Fla.; grandchildren, Kennedy Allen of Villa Rica, Austin Green of Newnan, Carrie Green of Newnan, Jeremy Green of Newnan, Megan Garland of Newnan and Courtney Garland of Newnan.

The family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. at Hillcrest Chapel Tuesday, Jan. 4.

Mr. Robert Jackson Baldwin

Mr. Robert Jackson Baldwin, 89, of Newnan, Ga. and formerly of Chicago, Illinois, died at his home Sunday, January 2, 2000.
Mr. Baldwin moved to Newnan from Naples, Florida, three years ago.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Mrs. Marian Baldwin of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Mrs. Barbara and Ed Gorvett of Newnan; son, Bruce and Ann Baldwin of Darien, Connecticut; 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, Jan. 4 at 4 p.m. at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Harry Holloman officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church "New Front Doors" fund.

Mr. Harry K. Barton

Mr. Harry K. Barton, 90, of Dahlonega, Ga. and a former resident of Hogansville, Ga. died Saturday, January 1, 2000, at Gateway Healthcare Center in Cleveland.

Mr. Barton ws born June 7, 1909 in Greenville, S. C., son of the late William and Ozella Goins Barton. Before making his home in Dahlonega seven years ago, he lived in Hogansville most of his life and retired as a production scheduler for Uniroyal Inc. after 40 years of service. He was a member of Emmaus Primitive Baptist Church in Hogansville, was a former member of the Hogansville Lions Club, and was a former Boy Scout leader. Mr. Barton was a former member of the Hogansville City Council and was a longtime member of the Hogansville Sportsmans Club.
A funeral was held 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3 at the graveside in Myrtle Hill Cemetery in Hogansville, with the Rev. Max McCord officiating.

Surviving are two daughters and sons-in-law, Bettye and Travis Chaffin of Hogansville, Harriett and Jim Brown of Dahlonega; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Bill Barton of Colfax, Wash., Bob and Beverly Barton of Dahlonega, Jerry and Pat Barton of Dunwoody; one brother and two sisters-in-law, Frank and Laconia Barton and Corrie Mae Spradlin, all of Hogansville; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Contributions in memory of Mr. Barton may be made to Emmaus Primitive Baptist Church in Hogansville.

Mrs. Harris was born in Meriwether County, Ga.

A funeral was held January 1, 2000 at 2 p.m. at Rocky Mt. Bethel Baptist Church in Luthersville, Ga. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Joseph Neal was eulogist, assisted by the Rev. Felton James, the Rev. Lowinston Jackson, the Rev. Darden and other ministers.

Pallbearers were Aundre Morgan, Larry Braswell, Johnny Taylor, Roy Clark, Daryl Cornelius and Donald Thomas.

A funeral was held at graveside in Senoia City Cemetery Sunday, Jan. 2 at 4 p.m. with the Rev. Winston Skinner officiating.

Mrs. West was born July 10, 1929 in Atlanta, Fulton County, Ga. She was the daughter of Otis Smith and Alma Bentley. A homemaker, she was a member of Sunnyside Baptist Church.

A funeral will be Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2000 at New Heights Baptist Church at 2 p.m. The Rev. F. D. McWhorter will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Milton Winslett. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Ms. Rebecca Bolton, 62, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, died at her residence December 26, 1999.

Ms. Bolton was born August 5, 1932 in Spalding County to Ms. Irene Furlow. She attended public school in Fulton County, Ga.

A funeral was Monday, Jan. 3, 2000 at First Newnan Seventh Day Adventist Church, Yeager Road, Newnan. The Elder L. Thomas officiated, and pastor Elder O. Sherrod assisted. Burial was in Eastview Cemetery in Newnan.

Nephews served as pallbearers.

Mr. Donald Richard Chesser, 68, of Hall Circle, Newnan, died Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.

Mr. Chesser was born January 10, 1931 in Akron, Ohio, son of Arnold Chesser and Laura Mae Chesser. He retired from the United States Army with 20 years of service and was also retired from James Rivers/ Fort James. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

A funeral will be Wednesday, Jan. 5 at 4 p.m. at Oak Hill Cemetery in Newnan with full military honors.

Surviving are his daughter, Donna Ward of Newnan; sister, Lois Jeager of Wheeling, West Virginia; brother, Allen Chesser of Indiana; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Tommy Carl Gunnells, 48, of Boone Road, Newnan, died Monday, January 3, 2000 at Newnan Hospital.

Mr. Gunnells was born October 6, 1951 in Carroll County to Leonard Gunnells and the former Nora Hendrix. He worked at Kmart Warehouse. He was of the Baptist faith and served in the U.S. Marines.

A funeral will be held at Hillcrest Chapel Thursday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Wayne Webb officiating. The remains will be cremated following the service.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, Jan. 5 from 6-8 p.m. at Hillcrest.

Mr. James William Blount, 62, of Cameron Street, Moreland, Ga., died Friday, December 31, 1999 at Emory Medical Center in Decatur, Ga.

Mr. Blount was born June 1, 1937 to the late George and Mae Bell Blount. Six siblings preceded him in death. He was married to Mrs. Jessie Ruth Talley in August 1967; and they had one child, Trellis Rena Blount. Mr. Blount attended Meriwether County schools and was a member of the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Luthersville, Ga.

A funeral was Wednesday, Jan. 5 at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Luthersville, Ga. The Rev. D. L. Driver officiated. Serving as pallbearers were nephews. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Surviving are a wife, Jessie Ruth Blount; daughter, Trellis Rena Blount; step-son Michael Talley; sisters, Mrs. Sally Ringer of Hogansville, Ga. and Mrs. Gladys Morris of Atlanta, Ga.; six sisters-in-law; a very dear friend, Vera Bussie.

Mr. Jackson was born Nov. 15, 1912 to the late Henry and Stella Jackson in Pike County, Ga. He was the last member of his family. He joined the White Plain United Methodist Church in Concord, Ga. He was married to the late Evelyn Reid.

A funeral will be Thursday, Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at Shoal Creek Baptist Church in Hollinville, Ga. The Rev. W. Pierce, pastor, will officate, assisted by the Rev. C. Park. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The remains will be placed in state at the church at 12:30 p.m. prior to the funeral hour.

Surviving are children, Miss Mary Louise Jackson of Gay, Ga., Mr. and Mrs. James Ogletree (Grace) of Zebulon, Ga., Ms. Ollie Long of Newnan, Mr. and Mrs. Shirone Render (Catherine) of Gay, Ga., Mr. and Mrs. William H. Mrs. Winnie Phillips Trussell, 96, of Marietta, formerly of Hogansville, died Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at Wellstar Cobb Hospital in Austell.

Mrs. Trussell was born April 5, 1903 in Griffin, daughter of the late John Robert Phillips and the late Elizabeth Thompson Phillips. Before making her home in the Atlanta area 12 years ago, she lived in Hogansville most of her life and was the wife of the late D. C. Trussell. She was a charter member of St. James United Methodist Chruch in Hogansville, where a Sunday School Class is named in her honor, and had been very active in the United Methodist Women, serving as district officer in the North Georgia Conference.

A funeral will be 1 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 6 at the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Charles Crenshaw and the Rev. Frank Powers will officiate and burial will be in Myrtle Hill Cemetery.
Surviving are two daughters and a son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. M. Rosser (Evelyn Trussell) Lunsford of Eatonton, and Mrs. Annette Strickland of Marietta; a daughter-in-law, Mrs. Ed LaVaughn (Faye Moore) Trussell of Fairburn; six grandchildren, Mrs. Deanna Stille Strickland, fred Stille Sr., Mrs. Darlene Cook, Mrs. Onalee Briley, Mrs. Eddythe Wagner and Dr. Daniel Trussell; ten great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 10 until 11:30 Thursday morning.

Mr. Smith Allen Atwater Sr.

Mr. Smith Allen Atwater Sr., 91, died January 3, 2000 at his residence.

Mr. Atwater was born March 2, 1909, the thirteenth of 15 children of Mary and Albert Atwater, and grew up in and around Newnan, Ga. On August 30, 1947 he married Gertrude Andrews and together they raised a loving family of five children, J. C. Hardy preceded him in death on August 17, 1998, and also a daughter, Martha Lee Williams.

He enjoyed many titles in his lifetime: soldier, master dry cleaner, business owner, chairman of the Deacon Board, church treasurer, Worshipful Master, Worthy Patron, and community leader. But the ones he cherished most were brother, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

As soldier he served with distinction in Europe in World War II. It was during this time that he first committed to his life-long philosophy of never doing just for today but always planning for a better tomorrow. In this he found a strong partner in Gertrude, they opened Atwater's grocery in 1948, and it was a community mainstay for the next 40 years. Together they built a family, a business, and a shining example of deep spiritual commitment.
He joined Friendship Baptist Church at an early age and served faithfully for many years as chairman of the Deacon Board and church treasurer, stepping out of these roles only when his eyesight failed. He remained a devoted deacon and church member.

His strong leadership touched his community in countless ways. He was a member of Newnan Masonic Lodge #299 F.&A.M. and served in many roles including Worshipful Master and Worthy Patron of Chapter #483 Order of the Eastern Star. He was also president of the Newnan Civic League, which worked for community improvement during the turbulent 1970s.

A funeral will be Saturday, Jan. 8 at Friendship Baptist Church, 29 Peachtree Street, Newnan. The Rev. Felton James, pastor, will officiate, assisted by the Rev. Rufus Smith and the Rev. Grady Vaughn and Elder Smith Atwater Jr. Burial will be in Sunset Cemetery.

Pallbearers will be deacons and members of Newnan Lodge #299 F&AM.

Surviving are his wife, Gertrude; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby and Johnetta Hardy, Elaine Hardy, Will and Denise Hardy, Smith and Merrian Atwater; daughter and son-in-law Pat and Odie Donald; sister, Mattie Harden; brother, Roosevelt Atwater; 21 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; seven brothers-in-law; innumerable other family and friends.

Mr. Robert F. Davis Mr. Robert F. Davis, 77, of Luthersville, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital in Newnan.

Mr. Davis ws born Sept. 10, 1922 in East Point, son of the late Lois Estelle Davison Davis and the late John Henry Davis Sr. He was an Army veteran of World War II and lived in Tampa, Florida before making his home in Luthersville 25 years ago. He was a member of the Baptist faith and was a retired painter.

A funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8 in the chapel of the Claude A. McKibben and Sons Funeral Home in Hogansville. The Rev. Billy Ball will officiate and burial will be in Luthersville Cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Clara Davis of Luthersville; two daughters, Mrs. Sandra Patterson and Ms. Linda Davis of Seffner, Fla.; three sons, Andy Davis of Hampton, Doug Davis of Luthersville, and Lamar Davis of Carrollton; one step-daughter, Mrs. Lisa Brown of Manchester; one step-son, Ronnie Owens of Luthersville; six brothers, John H. Mrs. Rose E. Chiostergi, 99, of Woodbridge, Virginia, died Thursday, January 6, 2000 at her home.

Born in New York, she was a resident of Virginia for the past 32 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Alessandro L. Chiostergi; her parents, Pincus and Sadie Cherniak; one brother, Jules Cherniak and one sister, Jeanne Ethel.

Surviving are her son, Robert Chiostergi of Newnan, Ga.; daughter, Sandra M. Chiostergi; four grandchildren.

The family was receiving friends Friday afternoon and evening at Mountcastle Funeral Home in Woodbridge, VA.

A funeral will be held at graveside 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8 at National Memorial Park.

Miss Victoria Fields, 13, died December 4, 1999 at Children's Health Care of Atlanta at Egleston.

She was born in Jacksonville, Florida, April 22, 1986, attended Arnall Middle School in Coweta County and was a member of St. George Catholic Church.
She is survivied by her parents, Patricia Chasse and David L. Fields; her step-father Phil Kline; sisters, Virginia Fields and Veronica Kline; grandparents, Robert and Jo Chasse.

A memorial funeral mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Jan. 15, 2000 at 11 a.m. at St. George Catholic Church with Father Leo Herbert officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made in Victoria's memory to Victoria Fields' Memorial Fund c/o The Federal Employees' Credit Union, P.O. Box 16659 West Palm Beach, Florida 33416.

Mr. Rodney Hand, 33, of Peachtree City died December 31, 1999 at Fayette Community Hospital.

Mr. Hand was born March 21, 1966 in Coweta County.

A funeral was Jan. 6 at 2:30 p.m. at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Senoia, Ga. The Rev. A. G. Baker officiated, assisted by the Rev. Milton Holston. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery. Family friends served as pallbearers.
Surviving are a dear friend, Pamela A. Williams; three children, Laquisha Hand (daughter), Raphael Hand (son) and Justin Hand (son); a loving father, Mr. James Whatley; six sisters, Mr. and Mrs. James Summerour (Patsy), Mr. and Mrs. William Smith (Jacquelyn), Mrs. Kathy Boozer, Mr. and Mrs. Yante Powell (Mary), Miss Renee Hand and Miss Shelia Hand; two stepsisters, Mrs. Sharon Ovee and Mrs. Lisa Robinson; four brothers, Mr. and Mrs. Charles (Virginia) Hand, Mr. and Mrs. Larry (Jackie) Hand, Mr. Bobby Hand and Mr. Jeffrey Hand; two stepbrothers, Mr. Jerry Whatley and Mr. Ricky Whatley; four aunts; five uncles and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Jones was born June 26, 1935 in Greenville, Ga., Meriwether County.

A funeral was held Jan. 6 at 1 p.m. at Temple of Christ Pentacostal Church, 1991 Venetian Dr., S.W. Burial was at Kennedy Memorial Gardens in Ellenwood, Ga. The Rev. John H. Walton was eulogist.

Surviving are her husband, Elder John Jones; son, Marcus Fuller; two grandsons, Kristopher Baxter and Brandon Fuller; one granddaughter, Tamika Atkinson; brother, Richard Harris; sisters, Mattie Harris, Nannie Metz and Arvella Harris (LaGrange, Ga.); and a host of other relatives and friends.

Mrs. Effie Elizabeth Patterson, 84, died Tuesday, January 4, 2000 at Piedmont Hospital.

Mrs. Patterson was retired from Piedmont Hospital.

A funeral was held at McKoon Funeral Home in Newnan Friday, January 7 at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Melvin Payne officiating. Burial was in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Eddie Hayes, James Farmer, Archie Slaton, Jerry Hines, Steven Horsley, Donny Slaton and Ricky Slaton.
Surviving are sons, Clay Patterson of Atlanta, Sonny Patterson of Atlanta; friend, Furman Elliott; sister, Eulene Hayes of Grantville, Ga.; grandchild, Angie Young; nieces and nephews; three great-grandchildren of Newnan.

Mrs. Cornelia Banks Smith, sister of the late Ernest Bud Grier Sr., died January 4, 2000 in Detroit, Michigan.

Mrs. Elizabeth June VanVickle, 67, of Kennesaw and formerly of Marietta, Ga. died Tuesday, January 4, 2000.

A funeral was held 2 p.m. Friday in the chapel of West Cobb Funeral Home with Pastor Bill Shattles officiating. Burial was in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park.

Mrs. VanVickle was a homemaker and a veteran of the United States Air Force.

Surviving are son, Nelson VanVickle of Austell, Ga.; daughter, Mrs. Jana Vogeley of Sharpsburg, Ga.; sister, Brenda Davis of Cartersville, Ga.; brothers, Jim Gable of College Park, Ga. and Horace Gable of LaGrange, Ga.; five grandchildren.

Ms. Lula B. Cochran

Ms. Lula B. Cochran, 80, of Major Road, Sharpsburg, died Sunday, January 9, 2000 at Emory Peachtree Regional Hospital.

Ms. Cochran was born February 25, 1919 in Coweta County to Charles P. Cochran and Ada Mae Minix. She was a homemaker and member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Cochran.

A funeral was Tuesday, Jan. 11 at Rock Springs Baptist Chruch at 4 p.m. The remains were to lie in state one hour before the service. Officiating was the Rev. David Ramey. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Herman Minix, Larry Hammett, Joe Hall, Samuel Winkles, Mike Cochran and Jim Hall.

Surviving are sisters, Gena Cochran Winkles, Ruth Cochran Shaw and Ruby Cochran Hancock, all of Sharpsburg; brother, Charlie "Chuck" Cochran of Newnan; brother-in-law, George "Doc" Cochran of Griffin; nieces and nephews.
