Calvin Black Sr.

PINEHURST — Funeral services for Calvin Black Sr. were held at 12 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13, 2004, in the sanctuary of Forrest Chapel Baptist Church. Burial followed in the church cemetery.

The Rev. J.C. Baker officiated the services.

Mr. Black died Monday, Nov. 8, 2004.

Survivors include his children, Carolyn (Henry) Peacock of Vienna, Connie Lumpkin of Pinehurst, Gertrude (James) Bryant of Vienna, Calvin Black Jr. of Pinehurst, Isaac L. Black of Pinehurst, Jacqueline M. Black of Unadilla, Eura Lois Black of Unadilla, Gerald T. Black of Stockbridge, Terry (Selita) Black of Elko, Willie (Comalytha) Black of Unadilla, and Bernita West of Vienna; two aunts, Rosie Stokes and Minnie Bonner both of Detroit, Mich.; sisters-in-law, Mattie (Jimmy) Clark of Miami, Fla., Mary Lester of St. Petersburg, Fla., Annie Ruth Jordan of Vienna, and Ernestine Jordan of Tampa, Fla.; brothers-in-law, Walter (Yonnie) Jordan and Elijah Jordan both of St. Petersburg, Fla.; special cousins, Minnie Duhart of Unadilla, Edna Jolly of Washington, D.C., and T.J. Harvey of Lilly; a devoted friend, Charlie Mae Hill; 16 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Blanche S. Stephens

PINEHURST — Funeral services for Blanche S. Stephens, 69, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, in the Pinehurst United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in Pinehurst City Cemetery. The Revs. Grady Vance and Ernest Bass will officiate the services.

Mrs. Stephens died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in a Macon hospital.

Born in Cordele, she was the daughter of the late W.A. Swin and Helen Joiner Swain. She was a homemaker and had also worked as a secretary for the Farm Bureau and as a desk clerk at Days Inn and Colonial Inn.

Blanche was a longtime member of Pinehurst United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday School for 35 years.

She served her community by being the Dooly County Coordinator for the American Cancer Society and was a very active member of the Pinehurst Beautification Committee.

Her greatest love was her husband of 53 years, her children and her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, Jack Stephens of Pinehurst; a daughter, Linda Cassell of Cornelia; a son, Tracey Stephens of Perry; a brother, Tommy Swain of Pinehurst; and her grandchildren, Chuck Cassell, Sam Cassell, Jackie Cassell, Casey Cassell, Kori Stephens and Jordan Stephens.

The family will be at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. today.

Jeanette Rosetta Bringman

CORDELE — Jeanette Rosetta Bringman, 68, of Cordele died at her residence Friday, Nov. 12, 2004.

She was born Sunday, Oct. 18, 1936, in Tilberry, Ontario, Canada, the daughter of the late Uriel Hormados Desmarais and Loretta Paquette Desmarais. Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Rainey Funeral Services today, Nov. 14, 2004, at 2 p.m. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Ashburn.

She is survived by her husband, Jerry B. Bringman of Cordele; a son, Leslie (Donna) Thomas Bringman of Cordele; three daughters, Kerrie Anne (Lamar) Wills of Dawson, Sherrie Marie (Danny) Horne of Milan, and Lynn Thérése (Scott) Harward of Belleview, Fla.; a brother, Robert (Theresa) Desmarais of Avon, Ohio; three sisters, Terri Rosell of Sarnia, Ontario, Ann (Ron) Stull of Niles, Mich., and Lorraine Bourdeau of Windsor, Ontario; grandchildren, Charity Faith Bringman, Aaron Horne, Anna Horne, Abby Horne and Molly Harward.

She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Lexi Bringman; sister, Margaret Richardson; and brothers, Bud Desmarais, Richard Desmarais and Don Desmarais.

Carolyn Jackson Hendley

CORDELE — Funeral services for Carolyn Jackson Hendley, 70, of Ridgetop, Tenn., were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004, in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services. The Rev. Don Howell conducted the service.

Jessica Parks, granddaughter of Mrs. Hendley, sang “Feel The Nails.” A taped rendition of “Go Rest High On That Mountain” was played. The casket was rolled from the chapel as “Amazing Grace” was played on the bagpipes.

Pallbearers were Michael Parks, R.J. Strickland, Cory Teramo, Jeff Smith, Richard Bolin and Rocky Chambers.

Interment was in Sunnyside Cemetery.

Rainey Family Funeral Services of Cordele had charge of the arrangements.

Vera Jeanette McKinney

CORDELE — Funeral services for Vera C. McKinney were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Ebenezer Baptist Church.

The Rev. Thurmond Collins conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Hortense Sims, pianist, and Gail Smith, organist, played soft music. Kim French accompanied herself on the piano and sang “Blessed Assurance” and Cheri Slade sang “His Strength Is Perfect.”

Pallbearers were Dennis Brewer, James Barry, Wayne Dupree, Terry Oglesby, Arthur Ben Morris and Joe Raines.

The committal service, conducted by the Rev. Fred Jones, was in Ebenezer Cemetery.

Ila Mae Stripling Stewart

WARNER ROBINS — Funeral services for Ila Mae Stripling Stewart, 93, will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, 2004, in the Second Baptist Church with burial in Sunnyside Cemetery in Cordele.

Mrs. Stewart died Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at her residence.

Born in Crisp County, she was the daughter of the late John and Dora Cox Stripling. She was preceded in death by her husband, Preston Stewart, grandson, Ricky Stewart, and a great-granddaughter, Rachel Ryan. Mrs. Stewart was a charter member of Pinecrest Baptist Church in Cordele, and was also a member of the Second Baptist Church in Warner Robins. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and a homemaker. Survivors include her children, Billy W. and Linda Stewart of Perry, Martha Johnson of Warner Robins, and Pat Stewart also of Warner Robins; five grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. today at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Second Baptist Church Building Fund, 2504 Moody Road, Warner Robins, Ga., 31088.

Charles K. Gordon

VIENNA — Funeral services for Charles K. Gordon, 67, of Rochelle will held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, 2004, at Liberty Baptist Church with burial in Vienna City Cemetery.

Mr. Gordon died Thursday, Nov. 11, 2004, in an Americus hospital.

Born in Uvalda, he was the son of the late Harvey Truman Gordon and Voila Mullis Gordon. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, a gas truck driver and attended Tabernacle Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by a son, Bo Gordon; a son-in-law, Keith Stewart; and a sister, Lou Hazel Gordon.

Survivors include a daughter, Kim (David) Grantham of Vienna; a son, Chuck (Kay) Gordon of Vienna; a sister, Goldie Holt of Lawton, Okla.; brothers, Harvey (Vera) Gordon of Warner Robins and Jerry Mullis (Sandy) Gordon of Warner Robins; and grandchildren, Courtney Gordon, Kyndal Gordon and Chas Stewart.

The family will greet friends from 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

UNADILLA — Graveside services for Gracie Dupree, the two-month-old daughter of Gerald Micek and Tiffany Dupree, will be held at 3 p.m. today, Nov. 12, 2004, at Walnut Cemetery in Unadilla.

Gracie died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004.

Ava Stephens Warren

VIENNA — Ava Stephens Warren, 72, of Vienna died in Phoebe-Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany Wednesday, Nov. 10, 2004.

She was born Thursday, Aug. 11, 1932, in Cordele, the daughter of the late John Herod Stephens and Lucy Posey Stephens. She was a member of Vienna First Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be held in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services Friday, Nov. 12, 2004, at 2 p.m. with interment to follow at Zion Hope Cemetery.

Mrs. Warren is survived by her husband, Dr. H.M. Warren of Vienna; three sons, Joe Warren of Pinehurst, Steve Warren of Vienna, and John Warren of Cordele; her daughter and son-in-law, Marie and Freddie Walter of Warner Robins; a sister, Sara Murray of Cordele; and five granddaughters, Crystal Schwanke of Valdosta, Brittany Warren of Fitzgerald, Jade Walter and Jennifer Walter both of Warner Robins, and Amber Warren of Pinehurst.

The family will receive friends at Rainey Family Funeral Services Inc. today from 6-8 p.m.

Lily Crum Doster

ROCHELLE — Lily Crum Doster, 89, died April 7, 2005 at Tift Regional Medical Center.

She was born May 27, 1915 in Cordele and was the daughter of the late Judge “Dar” David Alpheus Remer Crum and Sarah Florence Hamilton Crum. She graduated with the highest honors from Cordele High School and Middle Georgia College. She received an honor scholarship to Brenau College in Gainesville where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in English, Speech and Drama. While at Brenau, she worked as Assistant to the Dean, was a member of Cushman Club and Delta Zeta. Lily taught in Rochelle, Pitts, Dalton and Cordele. Her students often said, “Bum, Bum, Bum, Here she comes, William Lily Shakespeare Crum”. She was a member of the General David Blackshear Daughter of the American Revolution, The Wilcox Rifles United Daughters of the Confederacy, Dogwood Garden Club, Rochelle Woman’s “Priscilla” Club, and Rochelle Business and Professional Woman’s Club, Senior President of National Society Children of American Revolution, as well as being a national accredited flower Judge and member of Middle and South Georgia Judges Councils.

On November 26, 1942, Lily married Norman Brown Doster. They had three children. Their son, Jerome Brown Doster, died in 1985. She is survived by daughters, Norma Lilaine Chastain, married to Jack Terry Chastain of Rochelle and Letsa Sarah Mallette Marietta of Atlanta; a brother, Remer Hamilton Crum and Emily Fisher Crum of Atlanta; grandchildren, Jackson Todd and Lorrie Chastain of Rochelle, Phillip Doster and Lisa Chastain of Athens, Ryan Hamilton Marietta of Atlanta, and Fisher Crum Marietta of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Bailey Rey Chastain of Athens, Doster Chase Chastain of Athens, and Jackson Todd Chastain, Jr. of Rochelle; and her devoted and trusted companion, Barbara Benjamin of Rochelle.

A family service was held at First United Methodist Church of Cordele on April 9, at 9 a.m. with Lee Guerry officiating and music by Norma Turton. A graveside service was held at 11 a.m. at Morningside Cemetery in Rochelle with Lee Guerry officiating. A violin solo of “Amazing Grace” was played by Audrey Cason and Carol Harden led friends in singing “Into My Heart”.

Honorary escorts were her former students: John Alva Gordon, Charles Turner, Norton Futch, Mary Lou McDonald, James T. Lee, Rudolph McDonald, Charles Kelley, Elsie Rhodes, Tommie Fenn Kelley and Milton Whittle.

William Theodore “Ted” Hubbard

CORDELE — Graveside services for William T. “Ted” Hubbard, Sr. were held at 4 p.m. Monday, April 11, 2005 at Arabi Cemetery. The Rev. Teddy Hubbard, the Rev. Wayne Poole and Andrew Blanton conducted the service and Rainey Family Funeral Service was in charge of the arrangements.

Rev. Hubbard and Mike Hughes, guitarists, accompanied Judy Hubbard, Christy Blanton, David Dixon and Elizabeth LaPorte as they sang “He Touched Me” and “Broken Pieces”. The service was closed as the group sang “Go Rest High On That Mountain”.

Pallbearers were Timothy Hubbard, Jerry Lane Cardin, Nicholas Cardin, Charlie Akins, Bobby Cherry and Cliff Souther.

Mr. Hubbard died at his residence on Saturday, April 9, 2005.

He was born Saturday, July 28, 1934 in Thomas County and was the son of the late William Henry Hubbard and Frankie Frances Kent Hubbard. He was retired from Hubbard’s Junk Yard and a member of Free Spirit Fellowship Church.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Teddy and Judy Hubbard of Cordele; two daughters and their husbands, Sylvia Hubbard and Robert Coker of Cordele and Denise and Jerry Cardin of Benton, Tenn.; two sisters, Nell Charland of Cordele and Doris Newton of Lagrange; grandchildren, Wayne and Patricia Hubbard, Christy and Andrew Blanton, Amy and Bobby Cherry, Pamula Adams, Amanda and Jason Register, Twila Adams, Nicholas Cardin, Christy and Morris Grimes, Jerry Lane and Jenny Cardin, Timothy and Amy Hubbard, Lamar Pettis and Larry Pettis; great-grandchildren, Gabriel Hubbard, Zachary Arnett, Heather Arnett, Tyler Arnett, Anthony Hooper, Gregory Adams, Marshall Adams, Madison Adams, Emily Grimes, Miranda Grimes, Anna Jackson, McKayla Jackson, Christen Jackson, Chesney Hubbard, Emily Elaine Pettis, Samantha Dorough and Karlee McSwain; and a special friend, Vera Taylor.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sybil Poole Hubbard, a daughter, Carolyn Elaine Hubbard Pettis, and a brother, Rev. James Howard Hubbard.

The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday, April 10, 2005 from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. and Monday from 3 p.m. until time to depart for the cemetery.

Mattie V. Culpepper

VIENNA — Funeral services for Mattie V. Culpepper, 95, will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Vienna. Interment will follow in Vienna City Cemetery.

She died Monday, April 11 in a local hospital.

Born in Washington County, she was the daughter of the late John Irwin Veal and Mary Pauline Holt Veal. She was a retired nurse, a member of First Baptist Church of Vienna and the widow of John Ross Culpepper.

Survivors include her step-daughter, Dorothy Culpepper of Oconomowoc, WI ; a sister, Pauline Churchwell of Vienna; and step-grandchildren, Richard Miller of Brentwood, TN, Matt Miller of Jacksonville, FL and Sabrina Fagan of Phoenix, AZ.

Mary Hendrix Smith

HICKORY, NC — Mary Frances Hendrix Smith, 73, of Conover, NC, died Sunday, April 10, 2005 at Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory, NC.

Born January 10, 1932 in Crisp County, she was a daughter of the late James Bennie Hendrix and Bessie Powell Hendrix Turner. She was a homemaker.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Charles E. Turner; brothers, Thomas Hendrix, general Hendrix and Wesley Hendrix and a sister, Christine Smith.

Survivors include her husband, George Ivines Smith of the home; son, Bennie Smith of the home; sister and brother-in-law, Irene and Joe Catalana of Conover, NC; sister, Odelle Hefner of Hickory, NC; brothers, Arthur Hendrix of California, Marvin Hendrix of Florida and several nieces and nephews.

The Celebration of Life Service will be held Wednesday, April 13, 2005 at 2 p.m. at Fairgrove Baptist Church in Hickory, NC, with the Rev. Bobby Langston officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Memorial Park in Hickory, NC.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 from 7-8 p.m. at Fairgrove Baptist Church of Hickory, NC.

Christine J. Griffin

UNADILLA — Funeral services for Christine J. Griffin, 83, will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, April 12. 2005, in the chapel of Brannen-NeSmith Funeral Home of Unadilla. Dr. Bob Murphy will officiate and burial will follow in Walnut Cemetery.

She died Sunday, April 10 at Leisure Life in Unadilla.

Uriah Simon (Sam) Keen, Jr.

WINTER HAVEN, FL — Uriah Simon (Sam) Keen, Jr., 85, formerly of Abbeville, died Saturday at Life care Center in Winter Haven, FL.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 12, 2005 in Siloam Baptist Church. The Rev. Tommy Baker and the Rev. Mike Cook will officiate. Interment will follow in Siloam Cemetery.

Eddie Thompson

CORDELE — Funeral services for Eddie Thompson were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 9, 2005 in the chapel of Rainey Family Funeral Services. Dr. John Smith, III and the Rev. J.E. Harris officiated the service.

Luann Turner, pianist, played soft music and accompanied the Antioch Baptist Church Choir as they sang “In The Garden”.

Pallbearers were Ralph Phillips, Vince Thompson, Terry Thompson, Scotty Raines, Kyle Raines and Charles Hardin.

The Committal Service was held at Zion Hope Cemetery in Crisp County. Bobby Thompson presented the American Flag to Mrs. Thompson. Masonic rites were conducted by Cordelia Lodge #296 F&AM.
