Sarah Brewton

Sarah Annette Brewton, 53, died Monday, February 17, 2003, at her home in Glennville, Georgia. Born in Tattnall County, she is the daughter of Ananias Thomas, Sr., and the late Catherine L. Thomas. She served as a faithful and dedicated member of First African Baptist Church on the Usher Board as Assistant Secretary, and worked over 20 years at Claxton Nursing Home in Claxton, Georgia, as the Environmental Services Supervisor.
She is survived by her husband, James Brewton, Sr., of Glennville; one daughter-in-law, Stephanie Thomas of Glennville; one sister, Barbara Thomas of Glennville; four brothers: Ananias Thomas, Jr.; Charles Thomas (Harriette); and Dale Thomas (Linda), all of Glennville; and Alphanzo Thomas (Tambra) of Atlanta.
Visitation will be Friday, February 21, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Claxton, Georgia.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, February 22, at First African Baptist Church in Glennville, Georgia.

Fred J. Guy

Fred J. Guy, 57, most affectionately known as Snorkey Guy, died Monday, February 17, 2003, at his residence under the care of Hospice of Golden Isles Brunswick. The Tattnall County native had lived at Shellman Bluff for 12 years. He was a U. S. Army veteran, serving in Vietnam; a Mason; a member of Sapelo Hammock Golf Association; a retired Civil Service employee at Ft. Stewart; a U. S. Coast Guard licensed charter boat captain; and a member of Shellman Bluff Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Martha Guy of Shellman Bluff; one daughter, Davia Guy of Midway, Georgia; two sons and daughter-in-law, Shane and Sherry Guy of Richmond Hill, Georgia, and Scott Guy and Sherry Thomas of Alpharetta; one sister, Corlies Stanley of Callahan, Florida; one brother, W. G. Purvis of Callahan, Florida; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 19, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Jerry Knight and the Rev. Randy Oglesby officiating. Burial was in Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Richard DeLoach, Edwin DeLoach, Danny DeLoach, Charles Gillis, Joe Clifton, and Hugh Collins.
Cobb Funeral Home of Glennville, Georgia, was in charge of the arrangements.

Shane F. Johnson
Shane F. Johnson, 31, died Wednesday, February 13, 2002, at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, Georgia. He was born in Wayne County and had lived in Long and Tattnall counties most of his life. He was employed by Altamaha Pest Control in Claxton, Georgia, and was a member of Beacon of Hope Church in Glennville, Georgia.
He is survived by his wife, Tanya B. Johnson of Glennville; one son, Austin Shane Johnson of Glennville; his mother and father, Dale and Darvin Johnson of Glennville; two brothers, Harry Johnson and Casey Johnson, both of Glennville; his maternal grandmother, Johnnie Bell Rogers of Glennville; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 15, at Carter Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Lewis Cobb officiating. Burial was in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Roy Walker, Jr.; Michael Johnson; Terry Dasher; Ernest Stanfield; Joey Faulker; and William O'Neal.
Remembrances can be made to: Memorial Fund for Austin S. Johnson, Rt. 2, Box 1751, Glennville, Georgia 30427.

Jimmy J. Smiley
Jimmy J. Smiley "The Bread Man," 58, of Lyons, Georgia, died Thursday afternoon, February 14, 2002, at his residence after an extended illness. He was a native of Tattnall County, residing in Lyons for the past 15 years. He was retired from Derst Baking Company with 17 years' service as a bread man, and was Holiness by faith. He was preceded in death by a son, James Gregory Smiley, in 1965.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Smiley of Lyons; two sons, Ricky Smiley and Jamie Smiley, both of Glennville, Georgia; three daughters: Karen Zequiri of Ft. Worth, Texas; and Cheryl Beasley and Gina Williamson, both of Lyons; his mother, Beulah D. Smiley of Glennville; three brothers: Billy Smiley of Glennville; Glenn R. Smiley of Savannah, Georgia; and Bobby Smiley of Waynesboro, Georgia; one sister, Joyce Ann Fennell of Glennville; 11 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 16, at Ronnie L. Stewart Family Funeral Service Chapel of Vidalia, with the Rev. Glenn Russell and the Rev. Jerry Newell officiating. Interment was in Glennville City Cemetery.

Theron S. Hilton
Theron S. Hilton, 76, died Monday, February 18, 2002, at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton, Georgia. The Tattnall County native was a member of Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church where he had formerly served as a trustee. He was a retired sergeant major of the U. S. Army, having served in World War II, and was a 22-year veteran of the Georgia National Guard. He was a retired Civil Service employee with 37 years as a commissary officer. He also was a farmer, and a member of the VFW and American Legion.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Howard Hilton of Glennville, Georgia; three sons: Samuel H. Hilton of Macon, Georgia; Kerry D. Hilton of Hamilton, Georgia; and Grant M. Hilton of Braselton, Georgia; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 20, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville Chapel, with the Rev. Michael Bryan and the Rev. Oscar Rowe, Jr., officiating. Burial was in Ebenezer Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jimmy Howard, Stacy Howard, Gene Howard, Dewayne Howard, Mike Howard, and Shawn Stubbs.

Dr. W. Taylor Sumerford

Dr. W. Taylor Sumerford, 95, died Wednesday evening, February 23, 2005, at his residence under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. The Lowndes County native was reared in Reidsville until moving to Athens to attend The University of Georgia where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He later obtained his PhD In Chemistry from the University of Maryland. He taught in the Chemistry Department at UGA and Valdosta State College. He was employed with the Communicable Disease Commission in Savannah and with Meade Johnson Pharmaceutical Company in Evansville, Indiana. He lived at Tybee Island for 20 years before moving to Brooklet in 1999, and was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by his wife, Geneva Morris Sumerford of Brooklet; a son, Taylor Sumerford, Jr., of Shelbyville, Indiana; a daughter, Caroline Summerwood of Tallahassee, Florida; two sisters, Elizabeth Purvis of Bowie, Maryland, and Dorothy Thomas of Brunswick; two grandsons; two granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 26, at Reidsville City Cemetery, with the Rev. Calvin Durrence and the Rev. Carl Ledbetter officiating.
Pallbearers were Scott Sumerford, Andrew Sumerford, Larry Odom, Dr. Mat Purvis, Robert Brantly, and Dr. Roger Thomas, Jr.

Ocilla Quarterman

Ocilla Boyd Quarterman, 98, died Sunday, February 20, 2005, at Glenvue Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Deacon Louis and Sister Christene Middleton Boyd. She was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Deacon Elijah Quarterman. She was a member of Greater Zachariah Missionary Baptist Church, serving as musician for the church choir. She also played the piano for the choirs at Elem and St. Thomas Baptist churches. She was a Sunday School teacher, President of the Mission, District President of the Tattnall Baptist Association for the Women’s Department, and was active in the Georgia Baptist State Convention. She was the oldest member of her church. She was a member of the W.M.B.S. Society, and a life member of Laurel Growth Chapter #118, Order of the Eastern Star.
She is survived by her two goddaughters, Linda Nails Lattimore of Bronx, New York, and Annie Laura Stevens of Glennville; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 24, at Greater Zachariah Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. Charlie Anderson and the Rev. H. Clinton Boyd officiating. Interment was in Greater Zachariah Cemetery.

Norman Hallman

Norman Hallman, 86, died Tuesday, February 22, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The Tattnall County native was a U. S. Air Force World War II veteran, and was employed for 42 years at the Glennwanis Service Station and 18 years at Glenvue Nursing Home. He was a member for over 50 years at Glennville United Methodist Church where he had served as Secretary/Treasurer and was active in the Men’s Club. He was also active in the American Legion, VFW, and Red Cross Bloodmobile Drive.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Gladys Hallman of Glennville; one daughter, Norma Jean Masters of Atlanta; and two sisters, Nina Mae McLeod of Glennville and Thelma Stockton of Livingston, Tennessee.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, February 25, at Cobb Funeral Home, Glennville chapel, with the Rev. Steve Posey officiating. Burial was in Glennville City Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Mike Mulligan, David Smith, Daniel Smith, Brent Walker, Jerry Burkhalter, Danny Lynn, and William Jackson.
Remembrances can be made to the Glennville United Methodist Church Building Fund, 116 S. Caswell Street, Glennville, Georgia 30427.

Nita Mae Grantham

Nita Mae Grantham, 78, died Sunday, February 20, 2005. She was born July 9, 1927, in Tattnall County, Georgia, to the late Mr. Claude and Willie Baby Grantham. She attended public school in Savannah and Brunswick, Georgia. She was a member of St. James African Episcopal Church of Glennville where she served as an Usher. She was preceded in death by her husband for a short time, Johnny Byrd.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and the Rev. Marion Hardeman of Hinesville; two sisters, Velma Johnson of Brunswick and Nancy Roberson of DeLand, Florida; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and cousins; two wonderful and loyal friends, Mary Lee Frazier and Winton Futch; and a loving and faithful prayer partner, Rubena Surrency.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 26, at St. James A.M.E. Church, with the Rev. Richie Williams officiating. Interment was in Robert Chapel Cemetery in Tyson, Georgia.

LaWanda G. Berry

LaWanda GeDawn Berry, 42, died February 21, 2005, at her home in Glennville after a short illness. She was born September 15, 1952, in Tattnall County, Georgia, to Lillie Mae Tippins and the late James W. Tippins, Sr. She attended Long County public school. She was a homemaker, and a member of First African Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Nathan Berry; her mother, Lillie Mae Tippins; seven children: Stephanie (Ricky) Thomas, Sheila (Amilo) Ford, Patricia Hendley, Tyrone Tippins, Terry Berry, Billy Hendley, and John Hendley, Jr., all of Glennville; three sisters: Shirline Perry of Augusta and Barbara Lisbon and Lisa (John) Davis of Glennville; six brothers: James (Brenda) Tippins, Jr., of Hinesville; Ralph (Annie Ruth) Tippins of Claxton; Dale Tippins of Pelham; Billy (Mary) Tippins of Augusta; Glenn Tippins of Ft. Pierce, Florida; and Joel (Carmoleta) Tippins of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; five grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends; and four special friends: Cora Lee Roberson; John Hendley, Sr.; Randolph (Shakey) Adams; and Calvin Dickerson.
Funeral services were held Friday, February 25 , at 11 a.m. at First African Baptist Church in Glennville, with the Rev. Martin Bacon officiating. Interment was in Glennville Memorial Gardens.

Ananias Thomas

Ananias Thomas, Sr., 75, of Glennville, died Sunday, February 27, 2005, at Evans Memorial Hospital in Claxton, Georgia. The Tattnall County native was a resident of Claxton Nursing Home. He was a member of First African Baptist Church of Glennville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Cora Graham Thomas Davenport and Amos Thomas; his wife, Catherine L. Thomas; and daughter, Sarah Annette Brewton, all of Glennville.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Thomas; five sons: Ananias Thomas, Jr.; Charles Thomas; Dale Thomas, Sr.; and Ricky Thomas, all of Glennville; and Landers Alphanzo Thomas of Ellenwood, Georgia; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 5, at 1 p.m. at First African Baptist Church of Glennville. Visitation services will be Friday, March 4, from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Moody Funeral Home in Claxton.

Carrie Durrence

Carrie Weitman Durrence, 78, died Wednesday, February 19, 2003, at Glenvue Nursing Home in Glennville, Georgia. The Tattnall County native had lived in Glennville most of her life, and was a nurse with Dr. A. G. Pinkston for many years. She was a homemaker, and a member of Watermelon Creek Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elvis Durrence.
She is survived by a special niece, Linda Gale Groover of Glennville; and several other nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, February 22, at Watermelon Creek Baptist Church, with the Rev. Truman Blankenship and the Rev. Van Power officiating. Burial was in Glennville City Cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Wayne DeLoach, Gerald Baxter, James Weitman, Harry DeLoach, Mack Durrence, Jason Waters, Reggie Todd, and Bernard Purvis.
Honorary pallbearers were employees of Glenvue Nursing Home.
Carter Funeral Chapel of Glennville, Georgia, was in charge of the arrangements.

Thelma Morris

Thelma Morris, 91, died early Tuesday morning, February 24, 2004, at the Claxton Nursing Home. The Evans County native had lived in Claxton all her life. She was a homemaker, and a member of First Christian Church in Glennville. She was preceded in death by her husband, E. N. Morris, and a daughter, Susie Kate Holland.
She is survived by a daughter, Barbara Roberts of Glennville; five grandchildren: Bruce (Rita) Roberts of Tifton, Susan (Joey) Waters of Glennville, Jamie (Gena) Roberts of Hagan, Nicky (Vicki) Holland of Wisconsin, Johanna (Brad) Mixon of Charleston; 14 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, February 25, at Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home in Reidsville.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, February 26, in the chapel of Bradley B. Anderson Funeral Home, with Pastor Bruce Roberts officiating. Interment will follow in the Brewton Cemetery in Hagan.
Pallbearers will be Joey Waters, Gerald Brueggeman, Wayne Rowell, Richie Waters, Jamie Roberts, and Michael Anderson.

Ted McKenzie, Jr.

Theodore S. “Ted” McKenzie, Jr., of St. Simons Island, Georgia, died Sunday, February 22, 2004, at Southeast Georgia Health System-Brunswick Campus. A native of Wayne County, he was reared in Savannah and was a graduate of Savannah High. He was a graduate of Georgia Tech, and retired as a civil engineer from Georgia D.O.T. in 1984. He was an International Consultant in Civil Engineering. He also served in the U. S. Air Force, and was a member of St. Simons First United Methodist Church.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, at St. Simons First United Methodist Church, with interment in Oglethorpe Gardens. The Rev. Jim Smith and the Rev. Tom Stroud officiated.
He is survived by his wife, Madge Barnhill McKenzie of St. Simons Island; two sons, Michael McKenzie and wife Denisha and Matthew McKenzie; a grandson, Benjamin McKenzie; a granddaughter, Meagan McKenzie, all of St. Simons Island; two brothers, Edward McKenzie and Julian McKenzie, both of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Simons First United Methodist Church, 624 Ocean Blvd., St. Simons Island, Georgia 31522.
