Joel Trapido
Joel Trapido, who helped found the University of Hawaii department of drama and theater, died Thursday in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was 87.
Trapido was born in Newark, N.J., and earned a Ph.D. from Cornell University in 1942. He moved to Hawaii and established himself as a pioneer in the local theater.
He was a University of Hawaii professor who helped create the drama and theater department, where he served as chairman. He retired from the university in 1977 after 34 years of service.
He also was a member of the Friends of Kennedy Theatre and Friends Manoa Valley Theatre, and past president and member of Friends of the Ballet.
He served as a technical consultant for the Waikiki Shell, Blaisdell Concert Hall and the Leeward Community College Theatre.
Trapido is survived by his daughters Jean Trapido-Rosenthal and Barbara Trapido-Lurie.
Visitation 10:30 to 11 a.m. Friday at Temple Emanu-El; memorial service 11 a.m.; private inurnment.
