JOAN H. STAUFFER, 76, of Honolulu, died Aug. 3, 2000. Born in Lawton, Okla. A retired accountant who were among the first Hawai‘i women to have a CPA and MBA; also a lifetime supporter of equal rights who worked with YWCA and the State WIC Program. Survived by husband, Robert; children, Robert Stauffer, James Stauffer and Ann Siddons; seven grandchildren; sister, Edie Marshall. Graveside service 10 a.m. Thursday at Diamond Head Memorial Park. No flowers. Memorial donations to the YWCA’s Fernhurst Women’s Residence. Arrangements by Hawaiian Memorial Park Mortuary.

JULIANA "JULIE" MARIA SUGITAN, 61, of Waipahu, died July 30, 2000. Born in Laoag City, Philippines. A member of the Filipino Devotional Society of St. Joseph. Survived by husband, Eusibio; sons, James and Jeffrey; father, Exequiel Nicolas; sisters, Nicolasa "Lasing" Edrada, Caridad Doronio and Erlinda Narciso; a grandchild. Visitation 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Mililani Memorial Park mauka chapel, service 7 p.m. Visitation also 9 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church in Waipahu, Mass 9:45 a.m.; burial 11 a.m. at Mililani Memorial Park. Yoshimi Takeda dies at 67
Yoshimi Takeda, of Kalamazoo, Mich., an internationally renowned music director who worked for Hawai‘i Opera Theatre and conducted "Madame Butterfly" in Honolulu in 1985, died July 24. He was 67.
Takeda led the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra as music director for 25 years; in 1999 he became music director laureate.
He worked as a conductor in Hawai‘i in the 1960s. Hawai‘i Opera Theatre associate artistic director Beebe Freitas said she was continually amazed by Takeda’s talent and poise.
"I admired him greatly. He was extremely personable. He was very caring about the musicians and the music that was played," said Freitas. "He was a gentleman and a wonderful musician."
Takeda was born Feb. 3, 1933, in Yokohama, Japan. He graduated from the Tokyo University of Arts, made his debut with the Tokyo Symphony in 1958 and began his American career in 1962 in Cleveland.
In 1970, after serving as associate conductor of the Honolulu Symphony for six years, Takeda began work as music director and resident conductor of the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, a post he held concurrently with a position in Kalamazoo from 1974 to 1984.
Takeda twice received the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Award for Adventuresome Programming of Contemporary Music. Takeda was also awarded two honorary doctorate degrees.
His guest conducting appearances included engagements with the Cleveland Orchestra; the Chicago, Detroit, Phoenix, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Louisville, Honolulu and Cape Town symphonies; the London Philharmonic; the National Orchestra of Belgium; and other major orchestras in Spain, Mexico, Portugal, Japan and South Africa.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ellen; son, Christopher; brother, Tsuneo; and sister, Toshiko.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday at Stetson Chapel on the campus of Kalamazoo College, Kalamazoo, Mich.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, the West Michigan Cancer Center or the University of Michigan Cancer Clinic.

Margaret Anduha Almodova dies at 99
Margaret Anduha Almodova, 99, one of Hawai‘i’s last surviving original immigrants from Puerto Rico, died Sunday night at the Hale Omao nursing home on Kaua‘i.
Margaret Anduha Almodova came here in 1901 from Puerto Rico.
She was 9 months old in 1901 when her family arrived on the Big Island with the first group of immigrants from Puerto Rico. Her father went to work on a sugar plantation.
When Almodova was 8, the family moved to Camp Two, Makaweli, Kaua‘i. At age 14, she married Louis R. Almodova Sr. They lived in ‘Ele‘ele, Kaua‘i, and later moved to New Mill. They reared 11 children and a grandson.
"My grandmother never went to school," said granddaughter Pat Almodova Ashley of O‘ahu. "She couldn’t read or write a recipe, but she could certainly cook."
In addition to caring for her family, Almodova did washing and ironing for her neighbors to earn money. She attended church regularly and often visited hospitals in the evenings.
Almodova was born Dec. 24, 1900, in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Once in Hawai‘i, she never went back.
She is survived by daughters, Lydia Troche and Isabel Carvalho of California, Sophie Kea and Margaret du Pont of Honolulu; sons, David of Utah, and Louis, Frank Sr., Henry, August, Daniel and Ben of Hawai‘i; 38 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and 31 great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Kalaheo, Kaua‘i, from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday, followed by Mass at 11 a.m. and burial in the church cemetery. The family requests casual attire and no flowers.

WINIFRED Y. AHANA, 66, of Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i, died July 30, 2000. Born in Lihu‘e, Kaua‘i. Survived by mother, Hatsue; brothers, Robert and Patrick; sisters, Phyllis Tokita and Valerie Narikiyo. Private service held. Arrangements by Garden Island Mortuary Ltd.

MARGARET "MAMA" "GRANDMA" ANDUHA ALMODOVA, 100, died July 30, 2000. Born in Ponce, Puerto Rico. Possibly the last of the first group who came to Hawai‘i from Puerto Rico to work the sugar cane field. A member of the Puerto Rican Association of Hawai‘i. Survived by daughters, Lydia Troche, Sophie Ke-a, Isabel Carvalho, Margaret Du Pont; sons, Louis Jr., Frank Sr., Henry, August, Daniel, Ben and David; 38 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; 31 great-great-grandchildren. Visitation 9 to 11 a.m. tomorrow at Holy Cross Catholic Church, Kalaheo,Kaua‘i. Burial at the church cemetery. No flowers. Casual attire. Arrangements by Borthwick Kaua‘i Mortuary.
