VINTON - Virgil B. Wallace, age 83, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003 at his rural Vinton home, following an apparent heart attack. He was born on November 28, 1919 in Vinton, the son of Sherman Earl and Laura (Remington) Wallace. Virgil graduated from Lincoln High School in Vinton with the class of 1937 and attended Iowa State University in Ames. He served his country in the Army as a technician fifth grade from 1945 until his discharge in 1946. Virgil farmed North of Vinton until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the Vinton Masonic Lodge # 62 AF & AM and a member and past commander of the George G. Luckey American Legion Post # 57 in Vinton. He is survived by one son Richard “Rick” Wallace of Vinton; one daughter Lisa Wallace of Freeport, IL; two brothers, Harold Wallace and Louis Wallace both of Vinton and one sister, Emma Belle Edwards and husband Dale of Vinton In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son Raymond in 1996 and his sister Helen Johnson. Memorial Services will be held at 6:00 P.M., Friday February 21, 2003 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. David Gates officiating. The family will greet friends from 4:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. Private Committal services will be held at Bear Creek Cemetery, rural Vinton. A memorial fund has been established.

VINTON - Joan Westcott, age 73, died Tuesday evening, March 18, 2003 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. A daughter of Wesley “Joe” and Grace (Hittle) Cottrell, she was born on March 29, 1929 at her parent’s home near Brandon. On October 9, 1947 she married John R. Westcott at Vinton. He preceded his wife in death on May 14, 1975. Joan operated Westcott’s Truck Stop Restaurant for 14 years and from 1968 until retiring in 1999 she was employed at Virginia Gay Hospital and Annex and the Vinton Lutheran Home as a CNA. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Vinton and Royal Neighbors. In her leisure she enjoyed crocheting, and spending time with her family. She is survived by two sons, Richard of Vinton and Robert and his wife, Lori of Creston; three daughters, Loretta Rundlett and husband, Robert, Pauline Stout and husband, Daryl, all of Vinton, and Shelly Petersen and husband, Donald, of Mount Auburn; 13 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; one sister, Berniece Schwartz and one brother, Marion Cottrell and wife, Kate, all of Vinton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Marilyn Hettinger; one son, John “Jack” Westcott, Jr.; one brother, Gale Cottrell; and one sister, Charlene Priebe. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 22, 2003 at the Presbyterian Church in Vinton with Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Interment will be held at the Mt. Auburn Cemeteryin Mt. Auburn, IA. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton from 4 to 7 P.M., on Friday. A memorial fund has been established for the Presbyterian Church in Vinton.

GARRISON - Charles “Charlie” Wheeler, age 69, died Tuesday, March 16, 2004 at his home in Garrison, following a sudden illness. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, March 19, 2004, at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. Glenn Taylor officiating. Interment will be held at the Garrison Cemeterywith military rites. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until service time, Friday at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife Ruby; four sons, Randy (LeAnna) of Garrison, Jimmy of Vinton, Donald (Claudette) of Vinton, and Gary (Jody) of Garrison; 15 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; one brother, Bill Wheeler and friend Hazel Rambo of Vinton; three sisters, Madeline Greenwood of Vinton, Della Mae Yarrington of Hixby, TN., and Eileen Bednar of MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Linda in infancy and one brother Earl Wheeler. Charlie was born on January 5, 1935 at Vinton, the son of Earl “Shorty” and Vivian (Swearingen) Wheeler. He served his country in the Army from 1953 through 1955. On August 28, 1955, He married Ruby Lint at the Bretheran Church in Garrison. Charlie worked for Perfex, Garrison Brick & Tile and the Garrison Creamery, prior to his retirement. He was a member of the Garrison Bretheran Church and loved to spend time with his grandkids. A memorial fund has been established.

VINTON - Anna L. White, age 87, died Monday evening, June 14, 2004 at Virginia Gay Hospital following a brief illness. Private Funeral Services with Interment at the Urbana Cemeterywill be held to honor Anna’s wishes. Anna was born July 13, 1916 at Urbana to Fred and Mamie (DeMills) Kisling and graduated from the Urbana High School. For 22 years she was employed as a Nurse’s Aid and Ward Clerk at Virginia Gay Hospital. She retired in 1993. Anna enjoyed traveling with the Heritage Bank Club, crocheting and reading. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth Harrison and wife, Fern of Los Cruses, NM; her daughter Cheri Fraser and husband, William of Mountain Home, AR; her grandchildren, David and Sheryl Harrison, Jeffery and Lynne Harrison, and Valerie, Stephanie, and Preston Fraser; six great grandchildren; and her brother, Clarence Kisling and wife, Norma of Urbana. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Wayne Harrison, one brother, Carl Kisling, and one infant granddaughter.

VINTON - Erwin Wiebold, age 90, died early Friday morning, August 20, 2004 at the Vinton Lutheran Home where he has been a resident the past five and one half years. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, August 23, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Clarke E. Frederick officiating. Interment will be held at St. John Cemeterynear Newhall. Friends may call at the church from 9 A.M., until service time on Monday. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements. A Memorial Fund has been established. Erwin was born March 2, 1914 in Mower County, MN near Blue Earth to John and Minnie (Sanderfield) Wiebold.. On January 2, 1941 he married Louise K. Warner at St. Andrew Lutheran Church in Van Horne. She preceded him in death on July 5, 1999. Erwin farmed and lived in the Newhall area most of his life and has lived in Vinton the past twenty-five years. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. He was also a member of the Farm Bureau. In his leisure he enjoyed singing and fishing and spending winter months in San Juan, TX. His greatest joy came from being a grandfather. He is survived by his children, Rev. Raymond Wiebold and wife, Judie of New Richmond, WI, Dr. William Wiebold and wife, Wendy of Columbia, MO, Margaret Merriman and husband, Avery of Wayzata, MN, Joanne Moeller and husband, Larry of Newhall, and Kathryn Sheesley and husband, Harold of New Sharon; eleven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and his sister, Grace Hoyt of Newhall. In addition to his parents and wife, Louise, he was preceded in death by infant daughter, Ruth Ann; one grandson; and two sisters, Roma, Cole and Ella Wiebold.

KEYSTONE - Keith C. Wiese, age 72, died Thursday, February 20, 2003 at University Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City following a short illness. He was born on March 20, 1930 in rural Keystone, the son of Louis P. and Hilda (Feuerbach) Wiese and graduated from the Keystone High School with the class of 1948. Keith served his country in the Army from 1952 to 1954, stationed in Germany. On March 24, 1954, he married Grace Feuerbach at St. John Lutheran Parsonage in Keystone. Keith farmed for four years and operated Wiese’s Grocery in Keystone for eight years. He later served as the Keystone postmaster for thirty-three years, retiring in 1993. Keith was a member of St. John Lutheran Church and served as a volunteer fireman for many years. He was a member of the Merkel Bockholt American Legion Post #107 in Keystone, The Businessman’s club, Tara Hills Country Club and was a lifelong member of the Keystone Turners. He also served on the Keystone Cemeteryboard. In his leisure time, Keith enjoyed fishing, playing golf and watching sports of all kinds. He is survived by his wife Grace; three sons, Kim of Norman, OK, Lynn of Woodlands, TX and Kurt of Wheaton, IL; twelve grandchildren; two sisters, Ina Mae Hanson of Vinton and Darlene Meyer of Keystone and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother James Wiese. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, February 23, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone with Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. Interment will be at the Keystone Cemeterywith graveside military rites. Friends may call from 3:00 until 6:00 p.m. Saturday at the Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone. WALKER - Marvin E. Wiley, age 86, died Wednesday afternoon, April 16, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Clinton, Iowa following an extended illness. He was born April 10, 1916 at Center Point to Stephen M. and Stata (White) Wiley. On February 17, 1935 he was united in marriage to Marguerite Ague at Walker. His wife preceded him in death on December 25, 1993. Mr. Wiley farmed in the Walker area until his retirement. He was a member of the Walker Bible Church. In his leisure he enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, and drawing. He also loved singing and playing his guitar. For three years he had lived in Amana where his daughter resides. He is survived by his son, Lee Wiley and wife, Donna of Elvaston, IL; his daughters, Gail Takes and husband, Charles of Monticello, and Jeanne Grimm and husband, Marvin of Amana; sixteen grandchildren; thirty six great grandchildren; and his sister-in-law, Ruth Wiley of Madrid, IA. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two infant sons; his granddaughter, Erin Wiley; his brother, Harold Wiley, and his sister, Alice Wiley Newton. Memorial Services will be held at 10 A.M., Monday, April 21, 2003 at the Walker Bible Church with Rev. Richard Marseau officiating. Committal Services will be held at the Walker Cemetery. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established for the Mercy Medical Center North in Clinton, Iowa.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Larry D. Wille, age 66, of 513 Country Hill Lane N.E. Apt # 1, died Saturday, August 28, 2004 at his residence following a long illness. Funeral Services: 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 31, 2004 Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg with Rev. Mark Leckband officiating. Visitation: 4:00 until 8:00 P.M. Monday, Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton. Private family interment will be held at Cedar Memorial Park Cemeteryat a later date. A Memorial Fund has been established. He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Elaine; six daughters, Elainia of Wellman, Lorie Curfman and significant other Curt Dart of Center Point, Kay Kies and significant other Dennis Patten of Cedar Rapids, Heidi and Ken Rock of Wesley, Iowa, Kim and Dave Tigges of Cedar Rapids, Cindy Rock of Vinton; 18 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; his mother, Kathrine Mumby of Marengo; his sisters, Sharon and Loren Denzler of Belle Plaine; his brother Allen and Mary Ann Mumby of Marengo and a very special Aunt and Uncle, Maxine and Russell Williams of Monticello; and 5 children from a previous marriage, Lonnie, Ronnie, Kevin, Tammy and Sherri. He was preceded in death by his father Harold, a grandson Jamie Kies, a brother-in-law Ed Rich and a nephew. Larry was employed as a farmer for many years. He also worked at the Anamosa Prison, Federal Building and Duane Arnold Energy Center in Palo in security. Larry liked to hunt and fish and camp with his grandsons in his younger years. He also had a gun repair business. In his later years, he enjoyed working on model airplanes, ships and cars and playing ball with his favorite dog Sassy. He was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Shellsburg.

VAN HORNE - Christine J. Wilson, age 70, died Saturday, July 31, 2004, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Services: 3:30 P.M., Friday, August 6, 2004 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Keystone with Rev. Norman Bennett officiating. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Visitation: 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home. She is survived by her husband Robert of Van Horne; two daughters, Patsy Lynn McNaughton and husband J. Gil, of New London, WI., Martha Wilson, of Van Horne; five grandchildren, Donovan, Bonnie and Patrick McNaughton, Andre’ and Nicole Banks; three brothers, Glen Jones and wife Wanda of Brimfield, IL., Connie Jones of Fayetteville, TN., Jr. Jones and wife Zelma of Sneedsville, TN and one sister Debra Krumm of Palm Desert, CA. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Ilene Helle and Lois Greene. Christine was born March 10, 1934 near Sneedsville, TN to Lewis Bedford and Dona Esther (Garland) Jones. On August 20, 1961, she married Robert Wilson at the Methodist Church in Randalia. The couple lived in Fayette for 14 years, prior to moving to Van Horne in 1978. Christine was a homemaker and loved to baby sit her grandkids. In her younger years, she enjoyed playing the guitar and singing. A Memorial Fund has been established.

KEYSTONE - Elmer John Witt, age 87, died Friday, March 7, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a sudden illness. He was born on January 28, 1916 in rural Keystone, the son of John and Elizabeth (Feuerbach) Witt. Elmer served his country in the Army Engineers from 1942 through 1946. On May 5, 1946, Elmer married Juanita Kithcart at the St. John Lutheran Parsonage in Keystone. The couple farmed in the Keystone area, retiring and moving to town in 1994. While on the farm, Elmer was an O's Gold seed dealer and worked many dances at the Keystone Turner Hall. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone, the Keystone Turners and the Merkel Bockholdt American Legion Post # 107. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He is survived by his wife Juanita; one son, Doyle Witt and wife Kathy of Ankeny; one daughter Marlene Vols and husband David of Ankeny; three grandchildren, Daryl Witt and wife Rachel, Jennifer Ashlin and husband Kevin, all of Des Moines, Christine Vols of Ames; one sister, Lylas Sindt and husband Elmer of Keystone; one brother Marvin Witt and wife Ruth of Vinton and one sister-in-law Selma Witt of Keystone He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Lloyd, Clarence and Leland Witt. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 10, 2003 at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone with Rev. Bruce Kaltwasser officiating. URBANA - Russell L. “Dutch” Wyckoff, age 79, died Friday, September 3, 2004 at University Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City from medical complications. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, September 8, 2004 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Revs. Leo and Sheri Andersen officiating. Interment will be held at the Kisling Cemetery, rural Urbana with Military Rites. Friends may call from 4:00 until 8:00 P.M., Tuesday at the funeral home. “Dutch” was born on March 2, 1925 on the family farm West of Urbana, the son of Charley and Neva (Rouse) Wyckoff. He attended the Urbana Schools and graduated with the class of 1942. Following graduation, Dutch enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed with the 87th Infantry Division, Company L., and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the Combat Infantry Badge. He received an honorable discharge at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1945. On September 1, 1946, he was united in marriage to Margie Ploeger at the German Reform Church in rural Schaller, IA. Dutch was a lifelong farmer and owned his own plumbing and heating business in Urbana during the 1950’s. He learned his trade from “Spider” McCoy, Mike Liebech and Leonard Zieser. Dutch also served 4 terms in the Iowa Legislature, followed by one term as a Benton County Supervisor. When Dutch and Margie retired, he and his sons built a new home on the family farm, where they have lived for the past 15 years. He was active in High School and Town Team baseball and enjoyed watching his grandsons play ball. He was a member of the 87th Infantry Association and Veterans of the Battle of Bulge, as well as a 50-year member of the Urbana American Legion Post # 264. He is survived by his wife Margie; four sons, John and wife Dixie of Vinton, Ted and wife Edith of Urbana and Columbia, South America; Richard and wife Joyce and James and wife Cathy, all of the Urbana area; his sister, Geraldine Hickle of Shellrock; seven grandsons; four granddaughters; three great grandsons; and five great granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Marshall; brothers-in-law, Max Johnson, James Hickle, and Clarence Malcolm and his great grandson, Forest Wyckoff. A memorial fund has been established or donations may be made in Dutch’s name to a church or charity of the donor’s choice.

VAN HORNE - John Kermit Young, age 84, died Thursday, August 14, 2003 at his rural residence following a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Thursday, August 21, 2003 at Salem United Methodist Church in Van Horne with Pastor Norm Bennett officiating. Interment will be held at the Salem Cemeteryin Van Horne with Graveside Military Rites conducted by the Thomas F. Bevins American legion Post #148 of Van Horne. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Keystone from 4 to 7 P.M., today. A memorial fund has been established. John was born February 23, 1919 near Van Horne to John and Anna (Baumgardner) Young and graduated from the Van Horne High School. During World War II he served his nation in the U.S. Marine Corp and was stationed in the Pacific. He was a 58-year member of the Thomas F. Bevins American Legion Post #148 of Van Horne and a member of the Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans Organization. A lifelong farmer, John was a member of the Farm Bureau and the Belgian Draft Horse Corp of America. In his leisure he enjoyed watching baseball games. He is survived by his brothers, Rodger young and Donald Young and wife, Carol, all of Kalispell, MT; his sister, Ruth Burnett and husband, Larry of Pt. Hadlock, WA; his nephew, David Young of Kalispell, MT; and his sister-in-law, Maxine Young of Vinton. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Leroy W. Young.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Janice E. Zahn, age 64, of Muscatine and formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Saturday, July 31, 2004 at University Of Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City following an extended illness. Private Graveside Services will be held at Evergreen Cemeteryin Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton is in charge of arrangements. She is survived by her mother, Arlene Fisher of Van Horne and her son, Ricky Zahn of Cedar Rapids.
