VINTON - Amanda Ella Abbott, age 89, died Thursday, May 8, 2003 at the Vinton Lutheran Home following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Clarke E. Frederick officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton from 4 to 8 P.M., on Tuesday. She was born January 10, 1914 in Benton County to William and Ernestine (Stelling) Bruger and on November 21, 1933 she married Glenn A. Abbott at Vinton. He preceded her in death on August 21, 1978. Amanda was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she enjoyed fellowship in the Mission Circle, Mary Martha Guild, Fireside Club and the church choir. For several years she volunteered many hours of service to the Vinton Lutheran Home and was the founder of the Vinton Lutheran Home Auxiliary. In 1971 she was appointed as the Activity Director at the home and served in that capacity until 1981. She is survived by her seven children, Glenda Gingras of Wheaton, IL, Sherman Abbot and wife, Virginia of Choteau, MT, Steve Abbott and wife, Betty, of Melbourne, FL, Joan Casey of Michigan City, IN, Mike Abbott and wife, Jan of Great Falls, MT, Mary Pates of Cedar Rapids, and Bill Abbott and wife, Lori of Great Falls, MT; sixteen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren; and one great great grandchild. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Cathy; her sister, Naomi Bruger, and her brother, Robert Bruger. A memorial fund has been established.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Pauline Vera Adams, age 93, formerly of Shellsburg, died Sunday, November 14, 2004 at Living Center West in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Services: 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, Phillips Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David Gates officiating. Burial: Evergreen Cemetery. Friends may register at the funeral home from 9:30 A.M., until service time. Pauline was born June 6, 1911 at Shellsburg to Emory and Iva (Coy) Robbins and graduated from the Shellsburg High School in 1929. On April 11, 1931 she married Loys “Jack” E. Adams at Garrison, Iowa. The couple made their home in Linn County for 40 years. “Jack” preceded his wife in death on December 20, 1988. Pauline is survived by many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by five brothers, and three sisters.

KEYSTONE - Dorothy M. Albers, age 87, died February 3, 2004 at the Keystone Nursing Care Center following an extended illness. Private Family Services with interment at the Keystone Cemeterywill be held. Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone is in charge of arrangements. Dorothy was born April 20, 1916 at Keystone to George and Blanche (Miller) Albers. She served in the U.S. Army as a WAC from 1942 to 1945 and the U.S. Air Force from 1950 to 1952. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1953 as a licensed Architect. She practiced her profession in Colorado Springs, Co until retiring in 1983. In 2001 she returned to Keystone and resided at the community care center. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Roy and Colleen Albers and her sister, Leola Buch, all of Keystone and eleven nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her parents, her sisters, Lois and Ruby Albers, and her brother and sister-in-law, Lloyd and Betty Albers.

KEYSTONE - Harriet Lorraine Peters Allers, age 87, died Thursday, July 8, 2004 at her rural residence following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Monday, July 12, 2004 at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone with Rev. Clarke E. Frederick officiating. Interment will be held at the Keystone Cemetery. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Keystone from 4 to 6 P.M. on Sunday. A Memorial Fund has been established for Amenity Hospice and St. John Lutheran Church. Harriet was born May 18, 1917 at Blairstown to C. W. and Anna (Emmel) Peters. Following graduation from high school she attended teachers college and taught in country schools for two years prior to her marriage. On August 16, 1938 she married Henry Allers at Keystone. Harriet was a member of St. John Lutheran Church where she enjoyed membership in the Friendship Club. She also belonged to several neighborhood clubs. She is survived by her husband, Henry of rural Keystone; her daughter, Connie Allers of Cedar Rapids; two sons, Ron Allers and wife, Pat of Holmen, WI, and Michael Allers of Keystone; three granddaughters, Angie Allers and husband, Doug Zars, of Rochester, MN, and DeLona and Erin Allers, both of Madison, WI; two great grandchildren, Jacob and Elizabeth Zars; and two sisters, Kathleen Feuerbach-Stanton and husband, Fabian of Dysart , and Marjorie Merchant of Bemidji, MN. Her parents preceded her in death.

VINTON - Harold “Happy” Appleby, age 88, died Sunday, July 18, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, July 21, 2004 at the Presbyterian Church in Vinton with Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Interment will be held at the Urbana Cemetery. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel from 5 to 8 P.M. today. Harold was born September 8, 1915 near Hartwick, IA to Reno B. and Thera Alta (Wilson) Appleby. On July 26, 1940 he married Bernice Johnson at Prairie Creek Church north of Vinton. The couple farmed in the Lynnville, Urbana and Vinton area before moving to Vinton in 1978. Prior to his retirement, Happy was employed by the Benton County Conservation Commission. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Vinton. In addition to his wife, Bernice, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Larry Kemp of Montgomery, Al, his son and daughter-in-law, Kirk and Carilyn Appleby of Vinton; grandchildren, Kevin Kemp and wife, Amy, Dusty Kemp and wife, Jody, Clayton Kemp and wife, Melinda, Jay Appleby and wife, Kecia, Jayma Appleby and Jeanne Appleby; great grandchildren, Kaylie Appleby and Jayson Kemp; his sister-in-law, Ruth Appleby of Newton; and his brother-in-law and wife, Loren and Emny Johnson of Walker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Delmer Appleby.

VINTON - Elwyn H. Bahr, age 75, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at Virginia Gay Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack at his residence. A son of Harry and Emma (Jessen) Bahr, he was born on the family farm near Dysart on November 4, 1927 and graduated from the Dysart High School. During the Korean Conflict he served his nation in the U.S. Navy and farmed in the Dysart area following his honorable discharge. On September 28, 1958 he married Virginia Glandorf at Trinity Lutheran Church in Vinton. The couple farmed and raised their family in Jackson Township of Benton County and moved to Vinton in 1996. Elwyn had served as a 4-H Leader and as a member of the Benton County Fair Board. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served as an usher and as church treasurer. He was also a member of the Garrison Lions Club and the Geo. G. Luckey American Legion Post #57 of Vinton. He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Vinton; his children, Tim Bahr and wife, Karen of Vinton, Jeff Bahr and wife, Terri of Garrison, Donna Kunkel and husband, John of Des Moines, and Susan DeVries and husband, Kraig of Wilton; his grandchildren, Vanessa, Valerie and Valecia Bahr, John, Michael, Joel and James Bahr, and Reece DeVries; and his brother, Roger Bahr and wife, Karen of Walker; and five nieces. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Evelyn Cold Henke. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, March 8, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. CEDAR RAPIDS - Wanda R. Baird, age 87, formerly of Vinton, died Wednesday, August 25, 2004 at Manor Care in Cedar Rapids. To honor her request, Private Committal Services were held at 2 P.M., Friday, August 27, 2004 at Evergreen Cemeteryin Vinton with Rev. Joseph McGuire officiating. A memorial fund has been established for the Altar & Rosary Society of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Vinton. Phillips Funeral Home in Vinton was in Charge of arrangements. Wanda was born August 23, 1917 at Marceline, MO to Neil and Mary Ellen (Bloomquest) Wylie and graduated from the Marceline High School in 1935. On April 11, 1944 she married Frank Baird at Topeka, Kansas. During her adult life, Wanda has resided in Kansas City, Vinton and in Cedar Rapids since 1996. She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Patrick and Judith Baird of Cedar Rapids, and Michael and Laurie Baird of Evergreen CO; four granddaughters, Tracey and Melanie Baird of Cedar Rapids, and Cassandra and Cally Baird of Evergreen, CO; and her sister, Marilou Johnson of Fremont, NE. Preceding her in death were her parents, her husband, Frank and her sister, Veda Mullins.

VINTON - Paul L. Berry, age 91, of the Vinton and Dysart area, died Sunday, February 1, 2004 at the Winslow House Care Center in Marion, following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M., Thursday, February 5, 2004 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. Sara Akre, of Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemeteryin Vinton. Friends may call from 10:00 A.M. until service time Thursday at the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be held at 10:30 A.M. He is survived by his wife Alice of Marion; one son Michael P. Berry of Cedar Falls; one daughter, Nancy Rieck and husband Ronald of Center Point; 10 grandchildren; and 9 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Carol Mehlert and her husband Duane Mehlert. Paul was born on June 5, 1912 in Vinton, the son of Joshua and Minnie Bell (Wallace) Berry. On May 23, 1934, he was united in marriage to Alice Burger in Toledo, IA. The couple lived in the Dysart and Vinton areas most of their married lives. Paul drove a truck for Elliott Brothers and farmed for a number of years near Vinton. He also worked in the maintenance department at the Vinton power plant and served as the Benton County Sheriff for several years. Paul was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Dysart, the Ascalon Masonic Lodge #393 in Dysart, the Bona Bea Chapter 375 Eastern Star in Traer and the El Kahir Shrine in Cedar Rapids, where he was a member of the Hospital Dads. In his free time, Paul enjoyed bowling, motorcycling, attending shrine activities and visiting with friends.

VAN HORNE - Raymond Bray, age 86, died Friday, January 17, 2003 at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Raymond was born January 29, 1916 at Plato, MO to James and Nancy (Smith Bray). He graduated from the Plato High School in 1935 and in 1939 he moved to the Vinton and Van Horne area to find work as a farm hand. Raymond developed a deep love of the State of Iowa and was always anxious to return after visiting his family in Missouri. In addition to working for Van Horne farm families, he also operated a trucking business. He is survived by two brothers, Turel and Arvel Bray and his sister Cleta McGuire all of he Plato, MO area. At the time of his death he had been a resident of Heritage Nursing and Rehab Center in Cedar Rapids. Raymond was a kind a generous man with a wonderful sense of humor who loved to tell funny stories and play jokes on his family and friends. Funeral Services will be held at 11 A.M., Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel, Vinton with Rev. John Bray officiating. Burial will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Vinton. VINTON - Betty Jean Brown, age 65, died Saturday, April 3, 2004 at her residence following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Rose Blank officiating. Interment will be held at Evergreen Cemeteryin Vinton. Betty was born March 11, 1939 near Urbana to William and Pearl (Edmonds) Kisling and graduated from the Center Point High School in 1957. On September 6, 1958 she married James “Jim” L. Brown at Vinton. He preceded her in death in 1996. Betty owned a Ceramic Shop in Vinton for several years and prior to her illness she served as a Security Administrator at Initial Security in Cedar Rapids for ten years. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church and truly enjoyed her role as a grandmother. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Russell L and Deborah Brown of Oklahoma City, OK, Scot A. and Carri Brown of Pearl Harbor, HI, and Toby L. and Lori Brown of Vinton; her grandchildren; Tracey, Tifany, Shannon, Amber, Heather, Brenda, Jade, Mya, and Nikk; her great grandchildren; Katlyn, Justice, Faith and Kylee; and her brother and sister-in-law, Howard and Pat Kisling of Bowling Green, KY. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Jack and Robert and one sister, Barbara Novack.

SHELLSBURG - Elva Mae Broxey, age 83, died Saturday, November 13, 2004 at the Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton, where she had been a resident the past two years. Funeral Services will be held at 1:30 P.M., Wednesday, November 17, 2004 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. Louis Bell officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 12:30 P.M. until service time on Wednesday. A memorial fund has been established for the Virginia Gay Annex in Vinton. Elva was born January 13, 1921 in Canton Township, near Shellsburg to Porter and Della (Swallom) Gillis and attended Shellsburg High School. She married Ralph Kaut in 1937 in Vinton. The couple later divorced. On October 20, 1951, she married Dean R. Broxey in Shellsburg. Elva worked at Turner Microphone in Cedar Rapids during World War II. She worked for 34 years at Wilson & Company in Cedar Rapids from 1947 until retiring in 1981. Elva enjoyed playing bingo and watching her television programs. She also enjoyed the outdoors, tending her flowers and watching the birds in her yard. Her greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She is survived by two sons, Edward Kaut and wife Karen of Center Point, and Gary Kaut of Isanti, MN; one daughter Melva Kimbler of Seaford DE; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; her sister Lola Thomas of Cedar Rapids and many nieces and nephews and cousins. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husbands Ralph and Dean; her granddaughter, Maureen Kaut; grandson Tim Kaut; one sister and six brothers.

LA PORTE CITY - Philip Dean Brumbaugh, age 61, died Friday, January 2, 2004 at Cedar Valley Hospice Home in Waterloo following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, January 5, 2004 at the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City with Pastor Douglas Rokke officiating. Interment will be held at the Keystone Cemeteryin Keystone, with Graveside Military Rites conducted by Merkel-Bockholdt American Legion Post #107 of Keystone. Visitation will also be held at the church, from 4 to 7 P.M. today. Phillips Funeral Home in Keystone is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established. Philip was born December 27, 1942 in Ottumwa to Charles and Alla Maude "Beeb" (Denny) Brumbaugh. He served his nation in the US Air Force for six years. On December 4, 1976 he married Beverly Kusel at St. John Lutheran Church in Keystone. Philip was a Superintendent with Jensen Construction of Des Moines for 40 years. He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in La Porte City. Devoted to his family, he enjoyed providing for them as a bridge builder. Philip loved horses and enjoyed his hobby of trail riding and team roping. He is survived by his wife, Beverly of La Porte City; his children, Carla Dumont and husband, John of Ollie, Keith Brumbaugh and wife, Jill of Reasnor, Philip Brumbaugh, Jr. and wife, Nita of Keswick, Robin Brumbaugh and fiancé, Tim Ruggles of Keswick, Deana Bringolf and husband, Robert of Laramie, WY, and Tracy Brumbaugh of La Porte City; eight grandchildren; his brother, Tom Brumbaugh and wife, Randi of Priest River, ID; his sister, Della Mae Ocker and husband, Gene of Prairie City; and his mother-in-law, Thelma Kusel of Keystone. His parents and his father-in-law, Loren Kusel preceded him in death.

CEDAR RAPIDS - Harriet P. Morgan Brumley, age 71, died Sunday, August 1, 2004, at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids, following a short illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M., Thursday, August 5, 2004 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton. Private family interment will be held at a later date. Visitation: 4:00 until 7:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. She is survived by four sons, Richard (Amie), Ken (Maggie), and Marvin, all of Cedar Rapids, and James of Mentone, CA; three daughters, Debra (Jerry) Dedrick and Tamy Goodwin both of Cedar Rapids, and Kim (Ric) Martin of Strawberry Point; 26 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; five brothers; and 6 sisters. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by both of her husbands, four brothers, and one sister. Harriet was born on March 5, 1933 at Van Wert, IA, the daughter of Roy and Effie (Reed) Neal. In 1952 she was united in marriage with James Morgan at Alerton, IA. James preceded his wife in death in December 1979. On August 18, 1990 Harriet married William Brumley at Tucson, AZ. William preceded his wife in death in 1997. She worked at as cashier for the Dollar General Store before retiring in 2002. Harriet took great joy in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. A Memorial Fund has been established.

SHELLSBURG - Joan M. Cihla, age 70, died early Tuesday morning, August 19, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Friday, August 22, 2003 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Pastor Larry Rodgers of the Oak Grove Church officiating. Interment will be held at Oakwood Cemeteryin Shellsburg. Friends may call at the funeral home from 5 to 8 P.M., on Thursday. The casket will remain closed at all times. Joan was born July 16, 1933 at Urbana to Clinton and Pearl (Ferguson) Thomas and graduated from the Urbana High School. On December 27, 1952 she married Kenneth Cihla at Cedar Rapids. For several years she was employed at Killians Department Store in Cedar Rapids. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth of Shellsburg; her sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Mary Cihla of Amana, and Richard and Kristine Cihla of Urbana; her daughter, Connie Johnson of Cedar Rapids; nine grandsons; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Ronald Cihla; her brother, Howard Thomas; and two sisters, Helen Evers, and Lillian Wehde.

SHELLSBURG — Georgena Catherine Coy, age 69, died Wednesday, February 5, 2003 at the Northbrook Manor Care Center in Cedar Rapids, following an extended illness. She was born March 19, 1933 at Fairfax to Forest and Mary (Lockhart) Primrose. Georgena graduated from Washington High School, Cedar Rapids in 1951. On May 3, 1952 she married George M. Coy at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Georgena was a license clerk at CRST in Cedar Rapids before retiring after 20 years of service. She also worked as the City Clerk of Shellsburg for seven years. In her free time she enjoyed woodcrafts, needlework and reading. For the past eight years Georgena and George have spent their winters in Mission, TX., where they enjoyed the warm weather, music jams and trips to Mexico. She is survived by her husband, George of Shellsburg; one son, Marion and wife, Iris of Wildwood, IL; two daughters, Susan Clark and husband, Marvin of Shellrock, and Cindy Groth and husband, Donald of Cedar Rapids; eight grandchildren; one great grandchild; one sister, Rose Taylor and husband, Darrell of Center Point; one brother, Eugene Primrose of Cedar Rapids; and one half-sister, Doreen Lees of Laguana Woods, CA. She was preceded in death by her parents. Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, February 8, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Pastor Larry Rodgers officiating. SHELLSBURG - Lloyd Lavern Coy, age 93, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids following an extended illness. Lloyd was born February 2, 1910 at Shellsburg to Otis and Nellie (Engledow) Coy and was a farmer all of his life. On February 22, 1942 he married Edith Carberry at Lancaster, MO. Lloyd is survived by his wife, Edith; six sisters, Louiva Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Sadie Sturtz of Garrison, Blanche Henkel and Genevieve Their, and husband, Albert, all of Vinton, Alta Gee of Maynard, and Edith Williams and husband, Harley of Shellsburg; and three brothers, William Coy and wife, Norma, and George Coy all of Shellsburg, and Otis Coy, Jr. and wife, Janet of California. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Erma Noeller.

SHELLSBURG - William “Bill” Coy, age 87, died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. Funeral Services: 10:00 A.M., Thursday, September 9, 2004 at the Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton. Interment: Oakwood Cemetery, Shellsburg. Friends may call from 4:00 until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday at the funeral home. He is survived by his wife Norma; 2 brothers, Otis Coy Jr. of California, George Coy of Shellsburg; and six sisters, Sadie Sturtz of Garrison, Blanche Henkel, Alta Gee of Sumner, Loueva Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Edith Williams of Iowa, and Genevieve Thiher of Vinton.

URBANA - Lloyd H. Crawley, age 71, and formerly of Keystone, died Monday, June 9, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center following a sudden illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Thursday, June 12, 2003 at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. Charles Stevens of the First Church Of the Open Bible officiating. Interment will be held at Linwood Cemeteryin Cedar Rapids. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4 to 8 P.M., on Wednesday. Lloyd was born September 2, 1931 at Centerville, IA to Hugh and Fern (Harrett) Crawley and graduated from the Maravia High School in 1948. On August 6, 1971 he married Ruth Wesbrook at Rock Island, IL and she preceded him in death in May of 1992. Lloyd lived in Keystone prior to moving to Urbana nine years ago. For thirty five years, he served as member of the Cedar Rapids Fire Department and he retired in 1991. In his leisure he loved traveling and camping. He is survived by his companion of ten years, Evelyn Vanderpool and her family; three sons, Pat O’Neill and wife, Lynn of Solon, Skip Crawley of Virginia, and Ward Crawley and wife, Margee of Bettendorf; two daughters, Dianne Lyons and husband, Tim of Atkins, and Caye Larson and husband, Rod of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; and one brother, James Crawley of Iowa City. In addition to his wife, Ruth, he was preceded in death by his parents.

VINTON - Everett Davis, age 83, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 at Allen Hospital in Waterloo following an extended illness. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Saturday, April 24, 2004, at Phillips Funeral Home Chapel in Vinton with Rev. Jim Blair officiating. Interment will be held at the Garrison Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home from 9 A.M. until service time. Everett was born February 20, 1921 at Vinton to Harvey B. and Dora (Meyer) Davis. He lived in Vinton until 1999 when he moved to Country View in Waterloo. Everett will be remembered by many Vinton residents because of his love of people and the enjoyment he derived from visiting with anyone he met on the street. He took pride in his small well kept home on 2nd Avenue. Everett worked as a handyman and was always willing to do errands for local business people. He is survived by several cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded by his sister Ethel and his brother Roy.
