Mr. Van Grootheest was born April 30, 1941, in Doon, the son of Gerrit Sr. and Henrietta (Van Beek) Van Grootheest. He grew up and attended country school near Doon. On May 29, 1959, he married Helene DeBoer in Rock Valley. He was deputy assessor in Sioux County from 1979-1981 and Buena Vista County assessor from 1981 until his death. He was a board member, vice-president and president of the Institute of Iowa Certified Assessors; served on many committees for the Iowa Department of Revenue; was chairman of the ad hoc web page committee and chairman of the public relations/communications committee. Survivors include his wife; one son Terry of Dolphos, Ohio; one daughter, Mrs. Howard (Pamela) Vlieger of Maurice; eight grandchildren; two brothers, Gerrit Jr. and Albert, and two sisters, Mrs. Arie (Betty) Den Hoed and Mrs. Jim (Mary) Van Surksum.

Services were Saturday at Foster Funeral Home, Webster City, with interment in Graceland Cemetery. Angela Stapp was born June 26, 1966, at Marshalltown, the daughter of Richard and Kathie (Graham) Stapp. The family resided in Rock Rapids before moving to Webster City in 1977. She graduated from Webster City High School in 1984. On Feb. 8, 1986, she married Jerry Hartnett in Webster City. They resided in Webster City, moving to an acreage near Highview in 1992. Survivors include her husband, two daughters at home, her mother, one brother, one sister, two stepsisters, one stepbrother, and three grandparents.

Emily Byllesby, 93, died Sunday, May 30, 2004, at Palm Desert, Calif. A memorial burial will be conducted later this summer near Beaver Creek, Minn. Emily Ross was born March 26, 1911, in Doon. She grew up near Beaver Creek, Minn. In 1928, she married Harold Byllesby in Sioux Falls, S.D. She lived in Sioux Falls from 1925-1960. Her husband died in 1959. She lived in Kansas and Indiana before moving to California in 2002. Survivors include four daughters, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Byron Kaiser, 52, of George died Friday, June 4, 2004, at Sioux Valley Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. Memorial services were Thursday at Central Baptist Church, George, with interment in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Mr. Kaiser was born Oct. 16, 1951, at Rock Rapids, the son of John and Anna (Kruger) Kaiser. He grew up and attended school in the George area. He received a drafting certificate from Northwest Iowa Community College. On April 28, 1984, he married Pamela Eeten in Rock Rapids. He was a truck driver for several years. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Byron Jr. of Hawaii and Justin of George; one daughter, Angela Kaiser of George; one brother, Ronald of Estelline, S.D., and two sisters, Joan Steenblock of Humansville, Mo., and Jolleen Meester of Ellsworth, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Anna.

Esther Koele, 88, of George died Sunday, June 6, 2004, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital, Rock Rapids. Services were Thursday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, George, with interment in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Esther Van Briesen was born Feb. 28, 1916, near George, the daughter of Frederick and Coba (Christians) Van Briesen. She attended country school. On June 5, 1935, she married John Peters. They lived in George until 1951 when they moved to Cherokee. He died in 1966. In 1970, she married Dewey Koele. They lived in Hull. He died in 1982. She moved to George Good Samaritan Center Apartments in 1985. Survivors include three sons, Gaylord Peters and Lowell Peters, both of Arnolds Park, and Larry Peters of Plano, Texas; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; one stepson, Jim Koele of Wahpeton; four stepgrandchildren and 10 stepgreat-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, one infant daughter, three brothers and two sisters.

Memorial services were Friday at Lyon County First Presbyterian Church, George, with interment in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Gertrude Buss was born Jan. 6, 1919, near Little Rock, the daughter of John and Bena (Schultz) Buss. She grew up and attended school at Little Rock. On Sept. 5, 1939, she married Henry Kannegieter. They farmed near Rushmore, Minn., three years before moving to a farm near Little Rock. In 1965, they moved to George where they farmed 13 years. In 1978, they retired and moved into George. Her husband died in 1996. At Lyon County First Presbyterian Church, she was a member of Dorcas Society. Survivors include one son, Harlan of Gillette, Wyo.; two daughters, Mrs. Larry (Sandra) Ericsson of Norwalk and Mrs. Loren (Janie) Jacobsma of Little Rock; six grandsons; seven great-grandchildren and three sisters, Vera Markus of Adrian, Minn., Emma Kruse of Rock Rapids and Lydia Tjepkes of George. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and four sisters.

Phyllis Dirks, 74, of Rock Rapids died Thursday, June 10, 2004, at Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital, Rock Rapids. Services were Monday at Bethel Reformed Church, rural Ellsworth, Minn., with interment in the church cemetery. Phyllis TeKrony was born Aug. 3, 1929, in Bemis, S.D., the daughter of Anton and Delia (Wiemap) TeKrony. She grew up and attended country school in the Bemis area. She attended nursing school in Pierre, S.D., then moved to New Underwood, S.D., where she worked as a nurse assistant. In 1951, she moved to Rock Rapids and worked as a nurse assistant for Dr. Wubbena in the Rock Rapids hospital. On June 23, 1953, she married Melvin Dirks in Bemis. They farmed northeast of Rock Rapids. In 1982, she began working as a registered nurse aide at Rock Rapids Health Centre. In 2001, the couple moved to Rock Rapids. At Bethel Reformed Church, she was a member of Joy Circle and Quilting Guild. Survivors include her husband; three sons, Gerald and Douglas, both of Rock Rapids, and Randy of South Sioux City, Neb.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert of Long Beach, Calif., and Lloyd of Clear Lake, S.D., and five sisters, Gertie Schwake and Marth Tesch, both of of Watertown, S.D., Agnes Greenfield of Castlewood, S.D., Mrs. Charles (Verna) Brogmann of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mrs. Clinton (Norma) Krause of Clear Lake, S.D. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Services were Monday at George Boom Funeral Home, Sioux Falls, with interment in Grandview Covenant Cemetery, Larchwood. Mr. Long was born Oct. 16, 1910, at Larchwood, the son of Charlie and Emma (Johnson) Long. He grew up and attended country school near Larchwood, then farmed. In 1952, he married Isabelle Peterson at Powers Lake, N.D. They moved to Sioux Falls and continued farming. His wife died in 1993. He became a resident of Beverly Healthcare-Covington Heights in early 2004. Survivors include three sons, Daniel of Mandan, N.D., Mark of Sioux Falls and Timothy of Larchwood; nine grandchildren; two brothers, Carl of Harrisburg, S.D., and Joe of Sioux Falls, and one sister, Josephine Oltmanns of Lennox, S.D. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; five brothers, Ferdinand, Fromalt, Axel, John and David, and four sisters, Amanda, Betty, Sylvia and Roselia.

Ruth Knadle, 96, of Inwood died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004, at Fellowship Village, Inwood. Memorial services were Monday, Oct. 4, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rock Rapids, with interment in Forest Hill Cemetery, Canton, S.D. Ruth Knowlton was born July 24, 1908, in Canton, S.D., the daughter of Jefferson and Florence Knowlton. She attended school in Canton and at Augustana Normal. On Aug. 5, 1932, she married Myrlan Anderson. He died Sept. 9, 1950. On Feb. 28, 1956, she married Frank Knadle. They lived in Watertown, S.D., before moving to Rock Rapids in 1966. They had been residents of Fellowship Village in Inwood since 2000. He died March 22, 2002. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and Mission Circle in Rock Rapids. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Dick (Kay) Haisch of Canton and Mrs. Morrie (Jane) Trandal of Greeley, Colo.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren and two sisters, June Burks of Minneapolis, Minn., and Mary Burns of Wichita, Kan. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, two brothers and one sister.

Beverly Monkemeier, 86, of Sheldon died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004, at Northwest Iowa Health Center, Sheldon. Services were Wednesday, Oct. 6, at Tabernacle Baptist Church, George, with interment in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Beverly Thoelke was born Aug. 22, 1918, at White, S.D., the daughter of Henry and Grace (Boekhout) Thoelke. She grew up on a farm and attended country school and two years of high school in White. Her family moved to George in 1935. In December 1936, she married Raymond Cassens. They moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., and later to George where he operated a gas station and delivery truck. In 1949, they sold the station and bought a farm at Eagle Bend, Minn., where they farmed 17 years. After selling the farm, they moved to Minneapolis, Minn. Her husband died in 1976. Beverly remained in Minneapolis until she retired in 1980 and moved back to George. In 1989, she married William Monkemeier in George. They lived in George until 2002 when they moved into Christian Retirement Home in Sheldon. She was a member of Tabernacle Baptist Church, George. Survivors include her husband; one son, Daryl Cassens of Minneapolis, Minn.; one daughter, Mrs. Bruce (Shirley) Bowman of George; two stepdaughters, Shirley Winkowitsch of Ashton and Mrs. Daryl (Karen) Olson of Albuquerque, N.M.; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 11 stepgreat-grandchildren; two brothers, Bud of George and Duane of Forest City, and one sister, Earlene Hilbrands of Sheldon. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one sister, Viola Heidebrink.

Wanda Kruse, 80, of Belle Fourche, S.D., died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Palms Country View Adult Care. Services were Saturday, Oct. 9, at Christian Life Center, Belle Fourche, with interment in Pine Slope Cemetery. Wanda Nagel was born Aug. 1, 1924, in Doon, the daughter of Carl and Magdalene (Laackmann) Nagel. She grew up and attended school in Doon. She attended beauty school in Sioux City and worked in a dairy. On June 18, 1944, she married Glenn Kruse in Sioux Falls, S.D. They farmed, milked and operated Kruse Manufacturing near George several years. They also oversaw their children's operation of Green Acres Dog Kennels, raising several different dog breeds. In the early 1990s, they moved to the Spearfish, S.D., area, later moving to Yankton, S.D., for a time. They returned to the Black Hills two years ago, living in Belle Fourche. Following the birth of their daughter, Dianne, the couple adopted three children, were responsible for the immigration of two Korean girls, supported two children in Guatemala and had two foster children and several foreign exchange students. At Central Baptist Church in George, Wanda was a member of the women's group and taught Sunday School. She was also a Girl Scout leader. Survivors include her husband; two sons, Kay of Spearfish and Jerry of Roanoke, Va.; three daughters, Dianna Palm of Belle Fourche, Mrs. Steve (Dorene) Schemelfenig of Indianola and Deborah Kruse of Tucson, Ariz.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren and foster children. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Jerome; one brother, Conrad, and two sisters, Betty Iwen and Glory DeWindt.

Harvey Reinke, 87, of Larchwood died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004, at Tuff Memorial Home, Hills, Minn. Funeral mass was Thursday, Oct. 7, at St. Mary Church, Larchwood, with interment in Larchwood Cemetery. Mr. Reinke was born Jan. 25, 1917, in Larchwood, the son of Edward and Edith (Tracy) Reinke. He grew up near Larchwood and attended St. Mary's School in Larchwood, graduating in 1935. He helped his father on the farmily farm. On April 30, 1940, he married Mary Richarz at Larchwood. They lived on the Reinke family farm until 1944 when they moved into town. In 1951, they returned to the farm. In 1982, he retired from farming and they moved into Larchwood. On March 3, 2003, he moved to Tuff Memorial Home. He served as a usher at St. Mary Church over 40 years. He was a member of Moose Lodge #503 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Survivors include his wife; three sons, Thomas and Donald "Ty", both of Larchwood and Jerry of Omaha, Neb.; three daughters, Elaine Reinke and Mrs. Keith (Nancy) Bierle, both of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mrs. John (Judy) Anderson of Hudson, S.D.; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and one sister, Jean DeBaere of Rock Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Delores Sehr.

Memorial services will be Saturday, Oct. 16, at 10:30 a.m. at Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids. Bernice Kahl was born June 17, 1924, the daughter of August and Martha Kahl. She attended country school eight years and graduated from Rock Rapids High School. She worked in Washington, D.C., and Newton, Iowa, before moving to Santa Monica where she was a legal secretary for a law firm over 40 years. She was a member of the Santa Monica Bay Women's Club, Beta Sigma Phi, PEO and Sierra, holding elected positions in each organization. Survivors include one brother, Virgil Kahl of Milford, and one sister, Nina Finegan of Anchorage, Alaska. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Ronald Cadman, 70, of Spencer died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2004, at Royal C. Johnson Veterans Hospital, Sioux Falls, S.D. Services were Monday, Oct. 11, at Roste Funeral Home, Rock Rapids, with interment in Riverview Cemetery. Mr. Cadman was born June 17, 1934, at Boone, the son of Clarence and Pearl (Zunkel) Cadman. He grew up near Madrid and graduated from Madrid High School. He served during the Korean Conflict from January 1955 until April 1957. On December 27, 1965, he married Alice Meyers at Iowa City. They lived in Tipton where he worked as a farm hand. He lived and worked in several parts of Iowa. He was active in Alcoholics Anonymous and served as a counselor for Northwest Iowa Alcohol and Drug Treatment Unit. They lived in northwest Iowa until he retired and they moved to Arizona. They later returned to Iowa. Survivors include his wife; one son, Chris of Harris; one daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (ReNae) Leuthold of Ellsworth, Minn.; four grandchildren and one brother, Robert of Sun City, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kenneth.
