Georgia McMorris
Georgia LeeAnn McMorris, age 86 of Clarinda, Iowa, formerly of Leon, Iowa, the daughter of Eliza and Fred McMorris, was born June 14, 1913 near Leon, Iowa. She died in Clarinda, Iowa, on March 31, 2000. Georgia graduated from Leon High School in 1931, then the two year primary education course at Simpson College in 1945. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Education from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1967. Her first teaching experience was in rural schools of Decatur County. She later taught two years in the Weldon Public School and then taught first grade in Leon for 38 years. Georgia retired in May of 1983. She spent most of her life in Leon or nearby, but since June of 1983 she has lived in Clarinda, Iowa. Georgia was a member of the Central Decatur Education Association, the Iowa State Education Association, and the National Education Association for many years. She also was a member of the Leon Brethren Church. In later years she attended the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Clarinda. Preceding her in death were her parents; and two brothers: Raymond and Paul McMorris. She leaves to mourn three brothers: Donald McMorris and wife Mary of Windermere, Florida; John McMorris and wife Viola of Independence, Iowa; and Richard McMorris and wife Merlin of Stanley, Kansas; two sisters: Dorothy Rittenback of Jamestown, North Dakota; and Elizabeth Redman of Leon, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Helen McMorris of Kellerton, Iowa; and Helen Gjovig and husband Joe of Iowa City, Iowa; many nieces and nephews, other relatives, and many neighbors and friends.

Earl J. (George) Murphy
Earl J. (George) Murphy was born September 14, 1912 at Indianapolis, Indiana, to James and Florence (Thompson) Murphy. In 1946 he was married to Marg Turk at Indianapolis. He was employed by Kingan, Hygrade, and Wilson Meat-packing for nearly 50 years. He worked in Indianapolis, Ind., Richmond, Va., and Clarinda, Ia. He came to work at the Clarinda plant in the early 1970's. He retired from there and has enjoyed retirement, fishing and boating in the Clarinda area. Earl died suddenly Tuesday morning, May 30, 2000 at Clarinda Regional Health Center. He is survived by his wife, Marg, of Clarinda; children Carl Murphy of Richmond, Va., Andrea and her husband Willie Shaw of Kenbridge, Va., Jan and David Smith of Indianapolis, Ind., and Ryan Murphy of Clarinda; grandchildren, Sabrina and Craig Marshall, E. James II and Shelly Murphy, Samuel Murphy, Duane II and Andrea Murphy, Darren Murphy, Andrew and Michele Murphy, Rick and Paula Smith, Brett Smith, Travis Wymore, Levi Platt, Lindsey and Star Murphy; great grandchildren Jonathan, Rachel, Krystal, Emily and Suzanne Marshall, Christopher and Marcus Murphy, and Mathew Smith. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Duane Murphy, and grandson, Flagg Murphy. A Celebration of Life service was held Saturday, June 3, 2000 at St. Clare Catholic Church, Clarinda. Burial will be at Washington Park Cemetery, Indianapolis, Indiana. A memorial fund is being established. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Donald Byron Nelson
Donald Byron Nelson, son of Carl Alexander and Thyra Josephine (Youngberg) Nelson, was born April 29, 1921, in rural Douglas Township, Page County, Iowa. He passed away at Clarkson Hospital, Omaha, Nebraska, on January 16, 2000, following a brief illness at the age of 78 years, eight months, and eighteen days. Donald lived his entire life in Douglas Township. He was a life-long member of Bethesda Lutheran Church where he served on various committees and councils. He attended and graduated from country school near his home. Following his graduation, he worked on the family farm with his father. He took pride in the land that his grandfather bought from the railroad in the late 1860s or early 1870s after immigrating from Sweden. Donald enjoyed his Swedish heritage and liked visiting with anyone who could talk a little Swedish. On August 13, 1947, Donald was united in marriage to Melva Maxine Ashbaugh at the First Baptist Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. They first made their home on forty acres of land one-quarter mile west of his family farm. To this union were born two children, Gary Donald and Diane Louise. Following the death of his father Donald, his family, and mother moved to the family farm in 1965. He continued farming as long as he was able, finally selling his cattle herd in the spring of 1998. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Anna Louise (Nelson) Palmquist. His wife, Maxine, passed away on September 12, 1999. Donald is survived by his son, Gary Nelson of Ralston, Nebraska; his daughter, Diane Campbell and her husband Christopher of Clarinda, Iowa; three grandsons: Chuck Joseph Nelson and Daniel Gary Nelson of Omaha, Nebraska; and Alexander Frank Campbell of Clarinda, Iowa; his brother-in-law, Gerhardt Palmquist; and many relatives and friends.

Keith E. Nelson
Keith E. Nelson, the son of Carl and Mabel Perry Nelson, was born above a blacksmith shop in Farragut, Iowa, on January 6, 1928, and passed away at the Shenandoah Memorial Hospital on Friday, February 18, 2000. Keith attended LaPrairie Country School for the first three years of his education, later attending Eureka Country School and later graduating from Westboro Missouri High School in 1945. He enlisted in the Army Air Corp in 1946 serving his term of service in Bangor, Maine, and Biloxi, Mississippi. After the service he farmed in the Tarkio, Westboro, and Northboro areas all of his life along with helping at the Boylan Service Station in Northboro for many years. Keith was a member of the Order of the Arrow. His special interests included wood working, cards, dominos, fishing, grandkids, his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Survivors include his daughter, JoAnn Pollman and husband Gary of Coin, Iowa; son Ronald Nelson and wife Cindy of Northboro; daughter, Jerilyn Smith and her husband Raymond of Clarinda, Iowa; son Charles and his wife Ilona Nelson of Shenandoah, Iowa. Also surviving are four brothers, Kenneth and his wife Virginia of Sidney, Iowa, Carroll Nelson and his wife Kay of Blanchard, Iowa, and sister Lois Ann Spangler and her husband Darrell of Shenandoah, Iowa; along with grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at Hackett-Livingston Funeral Home, Shenandoah, Tuesday, February 22, 2000, with Rev. Glen Scott officiating. Burial took place at the Union Grove Cemeteryin Northboro, Iowa.

Carl Andrew Newberg
Carl Andrew Newberg was born March 13, 1920 in Montgomery County, Iowa, near Villisca. He was the son of Frank Albert and Minnie Smith Newberg. Carl died Saturday, April 8, 2000, at his farm near Braddyville, Iowa, as a result of a tractor accident. Carl attended Hazel Dell Country School near Villisca and the College Springs Consolidated School. He served in the United States Army in World War II. Carl spent his lifetime farming. His home was always open to friends and relatives and he generously gave of his time helping others. Carl is survived by his son, Terry Hanesworth, of Concordia, Missouri; and two granddaughters, Kari Powell and husband Nathan of Kansas City, Missouri, and Debra Fasion and husband Willie of Overland Park, Kansas, and two great grandsons, Christopher, and Jordan Powell. Also surviving are three brothers, Paul Newberg and wife Evelyn of Maryville, Missouri, Kenneth E. Newberg of Clarinda, Iowa, and Arllie Newberg of Buena Park, California; and three sisters, Velma Patience and husband Robert of Maryville, Missouri, Frances Offenburger and Delores Fischer of Shenandoah, Iowa. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Albert Newberg Harvie Newberg, and Robert Sheldon in infancy, sisters Mary Swim, Agnes Smith and Maxine Grieshaber. Funeral services were held Tuesday, April 11, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. John Duling officiating. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery, College Springs, Iowa. Memorials are directed to Amity Hall at College Springs.

Guy Noble
Guy Noble, 99, of New Market, Iowa, died Monday morning, January, 10, 2000, at the Clarinda Regional Health Center. Guy was born December 17, 1900, in rural New Market, Iowa, to Frank L. and Myra Glassgow Noble. January 7, 1924 he was united in marriage to Opal Lewis, who preceded him in death, December 9, 1999. He was a farmer in the New Market area. Survivors include his daughter, Gloria Jeanne Treese and husband George of Lincoln, Nebraska, son, John Stanton Noble and wife Wanda of Urbandale, Iowa, seven grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, sisters, Wilma Peterman of New Market, Iowa, Lela Herold of Lebanon, Oregon, Iva Peters of Lebanon, Oregon, Gladys Bashor of Salem, Oregon and Ethel Drueger of Silverdale, Oregon. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, one sister and two brothers. Funeral services were held at Wednesday, January 12, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the New Market Methodist Church.

Joyce O'Connor
Joyce O'Connor, 56, of Clarinda, Iowa, died Tuesday, February 22, 2000, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda. Joyce was born June 22, 1943, at Davenport, Iowa, to Gilbert and Berniece Guyer McAndrews. She was a graduate of Lost Nation High School, Lost Nation, Iowa, and a graduate of St. Theresa College, Winona, Minnesota. Joyce was a volunteer with PAVLA (Papal Volunteers to Latin America) and spent two years in Jamaica. Survivors include sons, Mark O'Connor of Annandale, Virginia, Brian O'Connor of Springfield, Virginia, brothers, John McAndrews and wife Ruth of Davenport, Iowa, Thomas McAndrews and wife Pat of Clarinda, Iowa, sisters, Jeneane Sebolt and husband John of Eldridge, Iowa, and Pat Pelan and husband Dennis of Logan, Iowa. Her parents preceded her in death. Funeral services were held Thursday, February 24, at St. Clare Catholic Church with Father Tom Coenen officiating. Burial was in Clarinda Cemetery. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Osborne
Mary Bernice Osborne, formerly of Clarinda and Shambaugh, Iowa, died Wednesday, June 22, 2000. Memorial services were held Saturday, July 1, at Shambaugh Methodist Church. Ms. Osborne was born December 14, 1922 at Myrna, Nebraska, the daughter of Clyde and Rema Jared. She received her LPN license in 1960 and served as psychiatric nurse at the Clarinda Mental Health Institute. She married Jerome "Ozzie" Osborne in 1961, and founded Osborne Upholstery in 1968 in Clarinda, moving the business to Shambaugh in 1975. She retired in 1980. Ms. Osborne was a member of the United Methodist Church in Shambaugh and an active participant there until her move to Wichita, Kansas, in 1997. She is survived by her son, George Knapple, of Wichita; daughter, Rosemary Gilbert, of Oak Grove, Missouri; sister, Maxine Gustafson of Tacoma, Washington; grandchildren, Lydia Akers of Quincy, Illinois, Mari Courtney Knapple of Kansas City, Missouri, Jared Knapple of Wichita, Kansas; grandson Marshall Behrmann of Wichita, Joshua Behrmann of Oak Grove, and Lindsey Knapple of Wichita. A memorial has been established at the Shambaugh Methodist Church.

Hallene A. Paul
Hallene A. Paul, 82, died Tuesday, January 4, 2000, at the Lutheran Home, Cedar Falls, Iowa, of natural causes. She was born December 9, 1917, in Clarinda, daughter of Harold and Thelma Godbey Hoskins. She married George W. Paul on September 7, 1940, in Clarinda. Mrs. Paul graduated from the University of Iowa as a registered nurse and was employed in the office of Dr. Harold Entz for 30 years. She is survived by her husband; a sister Norma Varley of West Des Moines; and two brothers, Norris Hoskins of Savannah, Mo., and Hoyte Hoskins of Bolchow, Mo. She was preceded in death by a sister, Helen Syre. Services were held at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Services on West Ridgeway, Waterloo, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Charles City. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service was in charge of arrangements.

Odessa Scotton Pearson
Odessa Scotton Pearson was born at Northboro, Iowa, to Alta M. and Berton T. Scotton January 20, 1905. She graduated from Northboro High School in 1923, went to Business School in Omaha, and worked for Lisle Manufacturer and Iowa Light and Power in Clarinda. On June 22, 1927 she married Albert Pearson in Clarinda who was an employee of C.B.& Q. Railroad. Later, he was bridge gang foreman and then master carpenter of St. Joseph, Missouri, division of C.B.& Q. Railroad. They lived in Clarinda, Craig, Missouri, and St. Joseph, Missouri. Odessa was an active member of Huffman Memorial United Methodist Church of St. Joseph. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one daughter, Mildred, two brothers, Harold Scotton and an infant brother and sister, Mildred. Surviving are two sons, Galen and Warren, of St. Joseph, Missouri; brothers Byron Scott of Northboro, and Lyle of Lake Elsinore, California; six grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Burial was in St. Joseph on May 9, 2000. Heaton-Bowman Funeral Home, St. Joseph, was in charge of arrangements.

Genevieve Adele Pendergraft
Genevieve Adele Johnson Pendergraft was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on September 13, 1906 to William and Louise Erickson Johnson. She passed away on Tuesday, June 27, 2000 at the age of 93. Her early years were spent in the Stanton and Red Oak vicinity where she attended rural schools. She graduated from Red Oak High School in 1924. She then attended college at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls and taught two years in rural schools and three years 4th grade in Oakland, Iowa. She was married to Ralph Pendergraft May 28, 1931 and lived in northern Iowa where he was superintendent of schools. In January of 1933 they purchased the New Market Drug Store which he ran thirty-seven years. They were the parents of Ann Adele born in 1933, Evlyn Kay in 1937 and Joel Ralph in 1944. Genevieve joined church at an early age at a country church at Pleasant Lawn near Red Oak and later a member of the United Methodist Church in New Market for sixty-five years. She was a fifty year member of the Eastern Star, a Past Matron and belonged to several clubs. She is survived by Evlyn Kay and Jake Samler of Bakersfield, California; Joel and Jo Krin Pendergraft of Paducah, Kentucky; thirteen grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren; also son-in-law Griff Taylor of New Market; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ralph who died March 31, 1977; a daughter, Ann Taylor June 11, 1998; a great granddaughter, Melissa Joy Doughty age 2 years July 15, 1998; and a brother, Glenn E. Johnson February 24, 1997, of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, at age of 95.

Portia Wilson Pershing
Portia Wilson Pershing, 80, of Colorado Springs, Colorado, formerly of New Market, Iowa, died Saturday, April 8, 2000 at Colorado Springs. Portia was born September 9, 1919, in Arispe, Iowa, to parents Charles G. and Bernice Petrie Wilson. Portia spent most of her school years in Blockton, Iowa, where she made many life-long friends. In 1935, during her junior year of high school, she moved to New Market, Iowa, with her parents, brother Dean and little sister Janice. Following high school graduation, Portia attended Northwest Missouri State University for a time then moved to St. Joseph, Missouri, where she attended a school of Cosmetology and began work as a beautician. During this time she met her future husband, Alvin. They were married October 12, 1940. He preceded her in death March 17, 1999. Portia and Alvin were partners beginning with rental farms and evolving into a stock ranch where they built their professional reputation and became known, literally, world-wide as quality Quarter Horse Breeders. Through the years many came to rely upon her record keeping and understanding when filing or researching horse breeding records and reports. Portia was renown for her ability to recite the breeding of any horse strictly from familiarity of the many bloodlines. Besides the horses, Portia enjoyed art, the theatre and was a voracious reader of everything in print. In 1984, she and Alvin moved to Colorado Springs to retire and to be closer to their daughter. Portia's love of life, family and friends soon won her many new friends. Portia has always been there for anyone who needed her, family or friends. She always felt so much love and gratitude for those many loved ones. In these recent years it has been especially heart warming to her when those same ones were unfailingly there for her through times of need. Forever loving people and radiating the joy of life-good or bad, Portia always had the coffeepot on for anybody and everybody. Her table was truly the meeting place for everyone's hopes, frustrations, questions, plus many, many stories and rolls of laughter. She leaves behind her daughter, Stephanie Lewis, her grandson Jonathan Petrie Lewis, her brother, Dean Wilson, her sister Janice Wilson Kassel and many family and dear friends. All who knew her are the better for having shared her positive glow. She will be missed. Funeral services were held Friday, April 14, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Dan Wiebesiek officiating. Burial was in Memory Cemetery, New Market, Iowa.

Dustin Paul Peterson
Dustin was born to Joseph and Amy (Richardson) Peterson Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at 3:25 a.m. He was delivered at R.E. Thomason General Hospital, El Paso, Texas. Dustin has a sister, Taylor, age 20 months. Also surviving are his parents; uncles Andy Peterson of Eudora, Kansas, Eric Wasinger of San Juan Bautista, California, Jeff Richardson, Clarinda, Iowa, James Richardson, College Springs, Iowa, and aunt, Karen Richardson, College Springs, Iowa; grandparents Leonard and Sheryl Richardson, College Springs, Iowa; and Kendall and Shirley Peterson, Coin, Iowa; great grandparents Glennis and Charles Fuller, Sun City, Arizona, Connie Soots, Clarinda, and Wayne Peterson, Coin; great-great grandmothers Beulah Swinford, Lovington, New Mexico, Georgia Hardin, Joplin, Missouri. A committal service for Dustin was held Friday, June 23, at Maple Grove Cemetery, College Springs, Iowa, with Rev. John Duling officiating. Eickemeyer Funeral Chapel of Clarinda assisted with arrangements.

Marguerite A. Phillips
Marguerite A. Phillips, formerly of Clarinda, died June 17, 2000 at Tempe, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her husband, W. Rusk Phillips, her parents, and a brother. She is survived by a sister, Wilma D. Elliott, nephews Edward and Harry Elliott, and niece, Marguerite Elliott, and cousin Patti Feese Semanek. Marguerite was a member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church and the Clarinda Chapter of the DAR. Burial will be in the Clarinda Cemeteryat a later date. Donations to the charity of your choice.

Dean Ridnour
Dean Earl Ridnour, 67, of Clarinda, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 28, 2000, at Terrace View Care Center where he resided. Dean was born August 11, 1932, in New Market, Iowa, to LeRoy Albert and Edna Whetsine Ridnour. Survivors include his sisters Esther Miller of Bedford, Iowa, and Cleo Anderson of Medford, Oregon. Preceding him in death were his parents, three brothers, and one sister, Melvena Miller. Graveside services were held Monday, May 1, 2000, at Memory Cemetery, New Market, with Rev. John Clark officiating. Walker-Merrick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Thelma Viola Ridnour
Thelma Viola Ridnour, 88, of New Market, Iowa, passed away Friday, January 28, 2000, at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Edgewood, Kentucky. Thelma Viola was born March 21, 1911, at Shambaugh, Iowa, to Clyde and Gertrude Alice Martin Stevens. July 4, 1927, she was united in marriage to Neeley Ridnour who preceded her in death December 21, 1991. She worked at Parris & Dunn and retired from Lisle Corporation after 27 years. Survivors include daughter, Phyllis Singleton of Erlanger, Kentucky, daughter Marcia Hickman and husband Dwight of Mt. Ayr, Iowa, son Lyle Ridnour of Hot Springs, Arkansas, daughter-in-law Gladys Ridnour of Shambaugh, Iowa, son-in-law George Douthit of Clarinda, Iowa, nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren, sisters Wilma Steeve and husband Elmer of Rancho Cucumonga, California, and Gartha Fredrickson of Las Cruces, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, daughter, Mary Lou Douthit, son Stanley Ridnour, and son-in-law Charles C. Singleton. Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 1, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Russ Clark officiating. Burial was in Memory Cemetery.

William (Bill) Ross
Bill Ross, 76, of Braddyville, Iowa, died Monday evening, January 17, 2000, at Clarinda Regional Health Center. Bill was born August 26, 1923, at Quitman, Missouri, to Oppie Henderson and Lois Frances Nichols Ross. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in China, Burma and India. September 20, 1946, he was united in marriage to Florence Reynolds, who survives. Bill farmed, trucked and did custom farming in the Braddyville area. He was a 20-year member of the New Market Fire Department. Bill was a member of the American Legion for 52 years, member of the Clarinda Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star of Siam. Survivors include his wife, Florence, of the home; sons, Gary Ross and wife Myra of Maitland, Missouri, Lanny Ross and wife Carol of New Market, Iowa; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; brothers, Byron R. Ross and wife Rose of North Liberty, Iowa, and Paul I. Ross and wife Barbara of Clarinda, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Frances Ross, and one great grandson. Funeral services were held Thursday, January 20, 2000, at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home with Rev. Richard Iske officiating. Masonic Rites were held Wednesday, January 19, followed by visitation at the funeral home. Burial was in the Memory Cemetery, New Market, with military rites by New Market Legion Post #300. Memorials may be directed to the Braddyville Rescue or to the New Market Rescue.

Lester D. Scheib
Lester David Scheib, 79, of Clarinda, was born March 12, 1920, at Norwich, Iowa, to John and Edna (Gregg) Scheib. He died Saturday morning, February 26, 2000, at Goldenrod Manor in Clarinda. Graveside services were held Monday, February 28, at Clarinda Cemetery. Memorials are directed to the Humane Society.

Marsella Elizabeth Schnellbacher
Marsella Elizabeth Schnellbacher, formerly of Morton, Illinois, died Tuesday morning, January 25, 2000, at Goldenrod Manor, Clarinda, Iowa. She was born December 22, 1912, to Lawrence and Margaret Lohnes Manker in Dillion, Illinois. On June 3, 1933, Marsella and Henry P. Schnellbacher were united in marriage at Sand Prairie, Illinois. For fifteen years she was a nurses aid in Restmor Nursing Home, Morton, Illinois. She was a member of the Morton Womens Club, taught Sunday School, and liked gardening, flowers, and helped at church functions. She moved to Lenox, Iowa, in 1988 to be near her daughter, Virginia. In the mid 1990's she moved to Clarinda again to be with Virginia. She was preceded in death by her husband Henry in 1981, her parents, children Lawrence Jr., and Margaret and Betty as infants, sister Irene Thompson, and son-in-law Robert Anderson. Sieg Schroeder, age 83, of Burnsville, Minnesota, went home to be with the Lord on March 30, 2000. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; his parents; and a brother, Herb. He will be missed by his children, Steve and his wife Barb of Savannah, Georgia, Tim and his wife Jill of Apple Valley, Minnesota, Gloria and her husband Tom Christensen of Isle, Minnesota; grandchildren, Julie, Mark, Tim, Jason, Brian, Hans, and Eve; great grandchildren Sydney and Lindsey; brother, Win and his wife Lois; sisters, Flora Sylvester, Mildred and her husband Gerhart Bluhm, Ruth and her husband Dick Krugler; cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. He was a Lutheran minister most of his career. Sieg also worked with the tape ministry at Holden Village, Washington. He loved to travel with amateur photography being his hobby. A memorial service was held Sunday, April 2, 2000, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, Apple Valley, Minnesota. The Cremation Society of Minnesota, Edina, Minnesota, was in charge of arrangements.

Diana Kay Shane
Diana Kay Shane, age 43, of Everest, Kansas, died Tuesday morning, June 20, 2000 at her home. She had cancer. She was born at Omaha, Nebraska, January 24, 1957, the daughter of Robert Lee and Katherine Malcolm Shields. At the age of 3, she moved with her family to Mt. Ayr, Iowa, where she grew up and attended school. The family later moved to Clarinda where Diana worked as a nurse aide at Clarinda Municipal Hospital. After moving to Kansas, she worked at Casey's General Store in Hiawatha, Kings Super Store in Horton, Stop-to-Stop Convenience Store in Hiawatha. Diana most recently had worked for Rudolph's in Atchison, where she was the bookkeeper and store manager for four years until declining health forced her retirement. Mrs. Shane was very strong in the Christian faith. Diana married William Theodore Shane, Jr., April 5, 1979, at Grant City, Missouri. They have made Everest their home the past sixteen years. He survives. Also surviving are two daughters, Sophia Begesse and husband Kenneth of Everest and Tangea Negonsott and husband Greg of Horton; her father, Robert Shields of Clarinda, Iowa; two sisters, Bobbi Marshall of Everest and Vicki Billington of Council Bluffs, Iowa; three grandchildren, William Everett Begesse, Evelyn Mae Negonsott, and Joshua William Bell. She was preceded in death by her mother, Katherine Shields, December 28, 1998. Funeral service and wake was held at 8 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, at the home of William and Diana Shane in Everest. Graveside funeral services were held Thursday, June 22, at the Clarinda Cemetery, Clarinda, Iowa. Memorials are suggested to the Diana Shane Memorial Fund to be designated alter by the family. Memorials may be sent in care of the Chapel Oaks Funeral Home, 1720 First Ave East, Horton, KS 66439, who is in charge of the arrangements.

Lois Ann (Meils) Simpson
Lois Ann (Meils) Simpson, 70, of Spring Hill, Kansas, passed away at her home July 3, 2000. Funeral services were held Saturday, July 8, at the Olathe Wesleyan Church, Olathe, Kansas, with burial in the Rose Hill Cemeteryin South Haven, Kansas. The Memorial Chapel Funeral Home, 143rd and Blackbob Rd, was in charge of arrangements. She was born October 3, 1929 in Wellington, Kansas, and raised in Milton, Kansas. She was a graduate of the University of Kansas with a bachelors degree in Elementary Education. She married Loren E. Simpson February 15, 1953 in Lawrence, Kansas. She was a teacher in the Olathe School District before taking the time out to raise her family. The family moved to Clarinda where she was involved in several volunteer activities which included Meals on Wheels, the Public Library, and the Clarinda Methodist Church where she was a member. The family then moved to Brookings, South Dakota, where she managed a book store for several years before retiring to Spring Hill in 1994. She was preceded in death by husband Loren E. Simpson, father Arthur R. Meils, brother Warren N. Meils. She leaves a son, Gregory and wife Cherrie Simpson of Lewisville, Texas; two daughters, Kathryn and husband David Polsley of Spring Hill, Kansas, and Rebecca and husband David Witherington of Charlottesville, Virginia; her mother, Merle Meils of Spring Hill; a brother Richard Meils of Ponte Vedro Beach, Florida; and six grandchildren.
