DOROTHY GILES
Dorothy Ferne Giles, age 82, of Creston, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 23, 2001, at the Cresthaven Care Centre, Creston. She was born May 3, 1918, in Union county, Iowa, the daughter of Clarence Webb and Laura Wilson Webb.
Dorothy grew up in Sandcreek township in Union county. She attended Melrose Country school and Tingley high school, graduating in 1937. After high school she lived at home taking care of her mother Laura until her death in 1944.
In 1946 she married Donald Giles in Troy, Kansas. The couple lived on a farm one mile north of her birthplace until 1965 when they moved to Arispe, Iowa. Don passed away in 1971. In 1979 Dorothy moved to Creston and in 1995 she entered the Cresthaven Care Centre.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Creston; the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary, the Livewire Club and the E.O.W. Card Club.
Dorothy enjoyed crocheting, having made afghan blankets for many years. She enjoyed spending time in her garden where she raised African violets and petunias. She was a wonderful cook and her family fondly remembers her coffee pie. Dorothy had a great sense of humor. She loved to laugh and was always quick to smile. She had a special place in her heart for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be sadly missed by those who knew and loved her.
Dorothy is survived by her three children, Dale Giles and wife Sue of Kansas City, Missouri, Shirley Callison and husband Rick of Greenfield, Iowa and James Giles and wife Rhonda of Creston; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceding Dorothy in death were her husband Donald in 1971; her parents, Clarence and Laura; and two sisters, Anna and Hazel.
Funeral services were held Friday, January 26, 2001, at the First Christian Church in Creston with Dr. Byron Lamun officiating.
Interment was held in the Tingley Cemetery, Tingley.
Memorials can be given in her name. Services were conducted by the Ritchie Funeral Home of Creston.

JANICE CHRISTINE OVERHOLTZER
Janice was the daughter of James C. and Mary E. (Long) Overholtzer. She was born at the Decatur County Hospital in Leon, Iowa, on May 2, 1950. She departed this life at her home in Fairfield, Iowa, on January 17, 2001.
Jan graduated from Grand Valley high school at Kellerton, Iowa, in 1968 and attended the University of Iowa.
Jan was preceded in death by her mother, grandparents, two uncles, three aunts, a stepaunt and stepuncle.
She is survived by her daughter Susan Lay; her father and stepmother Lila; two brothers, Chris of Seaforth, Minnesota and Dan and wife San Wa of Edgewood, Washington; one aunt, four stepaunts and five stepuncles; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and close friend Jim Leahy.
She will be remembered and missed by her church and a wide circle of friends.
Burial of cremains will be at a later date at Grand River, Iowa.

KENNETH EUGENE FINE
On October 21, 1925, near Kent, Iowa, Kenneth Eugene Fine would be born the youngest child to William Roy and Mary Cordelia (Chandler) Fine. With older brother Wayne and sister Verna (Starmer), Kenneth later grew up in the Diagonal area attending the Diagonal schools before entering the military and serving in WW II with the Army Air Corp.
On October 28, 1945 at the Highland Park Presbyterian Church, Kenneth was united in marriage to Erma Jo Slavik and to this union they would later share in the blessing of one son, Jim.
Kenneth was employed during his life as an auto parts manager working for various companies before retiring from Holmes Oldsmobile.
Kenneth served as president and past member of the Isaac Walton League in Des Moines, the Masons, Za Ga Zig Shrine and faithful member and past trustee of the Highland Park United Presbyterian Church in Des Moines.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being outdoors on his farm south of Diagonal before his illness and three year residency at Clearview Home in Mount Ayr, Iowa, where he passed on February 3, 2001.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his sister Verna Starmer; and his wife Erma Jo.
Surviving him in death are his son Jim and wife Rogena of Des Moines; a brother Wayne and wife Jan Fine of Platteville, Wisconsin; brothers and sister-in-law, Elmer Starmer, Buck Kessler and wife Louise.
Kenneth was a fine son, faithful husband, good dad, father-in-law and first-rate brother, brother-in-law and friend. He will be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at United Church of Diagonal, Diagonal with Reverend Pam Farren officiating. Musicians were Judy Newton and Sherry Wiley. Casket bearers were Delmer Brown, Eldon Starmer, Jay Watson, Darrell Brown, Matt Starmer and Larry Tepley.
Military graveside rites were given by Morris Herrold Post #395 American Legion.
Kenneth was laid to rest in the Bohemian Cemetery, Diagonal.
Wilson-Watson & Armstrong Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

LOLA MAGGARD
Lola P. Maggard, age 93, of Des Moines, Iowa, died of pneumonia Saturday, February 3, 2001, at Perry Health Care Center, Perry, Iowa.
Mrs. Maggard was born November 17, 1907, in Ringgold county, Iowa, and had lived in Des Moines since 1954. She was a homemaker.
She is survived by a son Jim of North Glenn, Colorado; four daughters, Julia Lane of Jamesport, Missouri, Louise Barnard of Littleton, Colorado, Ann Maggard of Des Moines and Sue Seeman of Panora, Iowa; two brothers, Jess Gilbert of Mount Ayr, Iowa and Bob Gilbert of Newell, South Dakota; a sister Hazel Vance of Mount Ayr; 18 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Acel.
A graveside funeral service was held Tuesday, February 6, 2001, at Rose Hill Cemetery, Mount Ayr with Hans Seeman officiating. Pallbearers were Rick Lane, Randy Lane, Bob Lane, Barry Lane, Jeff Seeman, Michael Barnard, Mark Barnard, Dan Maggard, John Seeman and Eric Seeman. Honorary pallbearers were Diann Alt, René Barnard, Kathy Ukatish, Cheri Dunmire, Michelle Sensburg, Leanne Clark, Cindy Walsh and Mary Johnson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Perry Health Care Center.
Highland Park Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

INEZ CLARA NEFF
Inez Clara Neff, daughter of William and Otta "Ottie" Hailey, was born December 22, 1906. Inez passed away with pneumonia at Albany Hospital, Albany, Missouri, February 1, 2001, at the age of 94 years, one month and 10 days.
On July 4, 1928, she was united in marriage to Virgel Harley Neff. To this union was born four children: Donald of Des Moines, Iowa, James of Grant City, Missouri, Dennis of Runnells, Iowa and Marilyn of St. Joseph, Missouri.
She leaves to mourn nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gladys Brooks of St. Joseph, Missouri and Ruby Dudley of Creston, Iowa; sister-in-law Delma Hailey and brother-in-law Bill Dudley; and many relatives and friends.
Inez was preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgel; grandson Doyle Allen Neff; brother Burt Hailey; half brother Lloyd Hailey and half sister Ethel LeGuerrier.
Inez belonged to the First Baptist Church of Grant City, Missouri, and the Sunshine Club of the Allendale-Grant City vicinity. She was a homemaker, living on farms in the Grand River, Iowa, Mount Ayr, Iowa and Allendale, Missouri areas until retiring to the town of Grant City.
Inez was a beautiful seamstress working for the Pixie clothing store, doing altering and mending. She was an avid quilter, making quilts, all hand stitched for all her children and grandchildren. Each stitch was a stitch of love. She sewed for her family and many people in the surrounding area. She made numerous wedding dresses; no task was too big for her.
Inez was a loving, caring, devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was loved dearly and will be sadly missed by all.
Funeral services were held Sunday, February 4, 2001, at the Prugh-Dunfee Funeral Home in Grant City, Missouri. Reverend Gale Juhl officiated.
Interment was in the Ellston Cemetery, Ellston, Iowa.

GUY SHEPPARD
Services were held Sunday, January 28, 2001, at the Boulder Creek Methodist Church, Boulder Creek, California, for Guy Sheppard who died January 21, 2001, at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Paul Seals in Ben Lomond, California. He was 95.
Guy was born in Harrisonville, Missouri in 1905. He graduated from Mount Ayr high school in Iowa where he was captain of the football team. He then attended business college. He married Mary Dinkel.
He held a variety of jobs during his long life including working for the Ringgold and Clarke county Iowa engineer's offices, International vice president of the AFSCM Workers, grocery clerk, state hospital attendant, marshal, and security guard. After his "retirement" he sharpened saws for 12 years.
Guy and Mary moved from Ringgold county in 1941 to Woodward and raised their four children there, always active in the schools and their church and the Woodward Hospital and school. He was a familiar figure behind the counter in Bob's Market.
Guy and Mary moved to California in 1962. A life-long Methodist, Guy served his beloved church family there as usher until this last year. He will be remembered and loved as a quiet, gentle man. His family was his life. He was proud of his children and the fact that they all had obtained degrees on their own.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, Mary (Dinkel), who died in 1993. They were a team. He missed her so.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Paul Seals of Ben Lomond, California, son Maurice of Mansfield, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Dr. Robert and Doreen of Clinton, Iowa, and son and daughter-in-law Richard and Mary of Grapevine, Texas; eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

ROBERT WOOD STERLING "WOODY"
Robert "Woody" Sterling was born December 29, 1942, in Stamford, Connecticut and spent his early years there.
He moved to Dallas, Texas in the mid 1970's where he met and married Judith Ann Sterling in 1980.
Woody had several master's degrees and currently served as a director for RIA. He was an exceptional man with a wonderful temperament and was highly respected by his peers and loved by his friends. Woody traveled extensively in the United States and Europe. He and Judith Ann had forged a beautiful partnership. He passed away on January 22, 2001.
Woody is survived by his wife Judith Ann; two daughters, Heather Danuszar and husband Nicholas of Connecticut, and Krista LaVoie and husband Rocky of New Hampshire; two granddaughters, Morgan Danuszar and Kelsey Danuszar; brother John B. Sterling of Connecticut; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Charles and Helen McGahuey of Mount Ayr, Iowa; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Barry and Gretchen McGahuey; nephew Ian McGahuey and niece Megan McGahuey.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

MARY CALLISTA SHAY WARIN
Mary Callista Shay Warin was born December 18, 1910, to Robert Emmett Shay and Margaret Ellen Hart Shay on the family farm near Maloy, Iowa. She graduated in 1928 from Maloy High school and from Ottumwa Heights Junior College in 1930 with an associate arts degree in education.
Mary taught school in Dunlap, Iowa for two years and then on August 18, 1932, married John Warin at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Maloy. Following her marriage, she taught in a Taylor county rural school for four years and then did substitute teaching for many years in the Maloy elementary school.
In 1986, Mary moved to Atlantic, Iowa where she lived for 11 years. Mary was active in her church, in the Altar Society, in Right To Life, and in the parish quilting club. She moved to Johnston, Iowa in October 1997 and then to Clearview Home in Mount Ayr in October 1998 where Mary passed away on January 29, 2001.
Mary Warin is survived by her three daughters, Rita (husband Ken) Reasoner of Urbandale, Iowa, Rosemary (husband Keith) Leonard of Atlantic, Iowa, and Joan (husband Tom) Roets of Naples, Florida; two sisters, Rita Shay of Mount Ayr, Iowa and Sister Rosemary Shay CHM of Johnston; one brother Robert Shay of Creston, Iowa; nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Warin was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and an infant son, John Thomas Warin.
A mass of the resurrection was held Friday, February 2, 2001, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mount Ayr, with celebrants Father Mark Reasoner, Father Thomas Dooley and Monsignor Lawrence Beason. The lector was Mike Reasoner and musicians were Mary Pat Reasoner and Nancy Sackett. Gift bearers were Carol Sheldon and John T. Moore. Casket bearers were Dan Reasoner, Beth Geis, Meg Corbin, Doug Leonard, David Leonard, Kate Getty and Mary Pat Reasoner.
Mary was laid to rest in the St. Mary Cemetery, Maloy.
