GARBER, MAE A. was born December 22, 1919 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Walter and Alice (McCusker) Sommer. She married Ernest V. "Jan" Garber on January 2, 1942 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Waterloo, Iowa. Mae was a secretary in the Engineering Dept. at John Deere and Co. from 1944 – 1954 and was a Tour Guide at the Engine Works from 1979 – 1996. She was a member of P.E.O. and the Cedar Heights Woman’s Club, and was a volunteer at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo for many years. Mae died Thursday, March 4, 1999 at Covenant Medical Center at 79 years of age.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest V. "Jan" Garber of Cedar Falls, Iowa; her son, Michael J. Garber of Morgan Hill, California and her daughter, Linda M. Hibben of Cedar Falls; and her six grandchildren, Blake Hibben, Michelle Garber, Stephen Garber, Sara-Ann Garber, Aubree Garber and Timothy Garber.
Mae was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Monday, March 8, 1999 at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with burial at Mt. Olivet Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to Catholic Charities or Cedar Valley Hospice.

GERDES, CAROL JEAN , 64, of Cedar Falls died Monday, March 22, 2004 at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo. Carol was born August 22, 1939, at Cedar Falls, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Edel (Andersen) Johnson. She married Ted Gerdes, August 2, 1958, at Fredsville Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, Iowa. Carol was an Interior Designer and worked for several local galleries. Carol loved life, laughing with her family and friends and spending time in her garden.
Carol is survived by her husband, Ted, of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Christie (Mark) Potter of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Lori (Tim) Schneider of Waterloo, Iowa; five grandchildren, Chris and Justin Potter, both of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, and Ted, Alana and Joey Schneider, all of Waterloo, Iowa; two brothers, Byron (Helen) Johnson of Dike, Iowa and Dennis Johnson of Deming, New Mexico; and two sisters, Margaret (Richard) Ohrt of Reinbeck, Iowa and Minnie Coates of Santa Rosa, California.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Chester and Bob Johnson and one sister, Irene Drane.
Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at St. John Lutheran Church with burial at Fredsville Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Cedar Falls. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the Black Hawk County Chapter of the Muscular Dystrophy Association or the Cedar Falls Historical Society.

GERDES, EMMA was born December 3, 1910 the daughter of Walter H. and Tillie (Dieken) Bakker in Lincoln Township, Grundy County, Iowa. She taught school at Lincoln #3 for some years before her marriage to Theodore H. Gerdes on December 1, 1932 in Lincoln Township, Grundy County, Iowa. He preceded her in death in 1985. Emma died Tuesday, August 28, 2001 at Allen Memorial Hospital, Waterloo, Iowa at the age of 90 years.
Emma is survived by two sons, Ted H. Gerdes and his wife, Carol, Cedar Falls, Iowa and Norm Gerdes and his wife, Cheryl, Charles City, Iowa; four grandchildren, Christie Potter and her husband, Mark, Lori Schneider and her husband, Tim, Daniel Gerdes and his wife, Karen, Brian Gerdes and his wife, Michele; and eleven great grandchildren, Christopher, Justin, Ted, Alana, Joey, Dane, Emma, Benjamin, Claire, Ryan and Raef.
She was preceded in death by parents, husband, and two sisters, Pearl Dudden and Lillian Tapper.
Services were 1:30 p.m. Friday, August 24, 2001 at Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church with burial in the church cemetery. A memorial fund will be established.

GERHOLDT, INEZ MILDRED was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Mona, Iowa the daughter of Charles and Mable (Seeley) Crangle. She married Mads Gerholdt on July 31, 1935, in Waterloo. He died Dec. 2, 1993. Inez and her husband farmed near New Hartford for many years, retiring in 1978. She died Tuesday, Feb. 27, 2001 at the Western Home in Cedar Falls at the age of 85 years.
Survivors include one son, Jim Gerholdt and his wife, Marilyn, of New Hartford; one daughter, Lois Nelson and her husband, Don, of Cedar Falls; 13 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons. She was preceded in death by one son, Carl, in infancy; one daughter, Rose Ridder; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold, Marshall and Clarence Crangle; and three sisters, Evelyn, Mabel and Aline Crangle.
Services were 1:30 p.m. Friday, March 2, 2001 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Parkersburg, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, New Hartford. Memorials may be directed to the church or the Western Home.

GERJERTS, H. PAUL was born August 20, 1927 at Miller, South Dakota the son of Henry and Peta (Escherhausen) Gerjerts. He married Marvel Ringleb on September 5, 1950 in Clarksville, Iowa. Paul retired from the Rath Packing Company as Controller and most recently was employed part time at Benefit Administrative Services, Inc. He died Sunday, October 11, 1998 at Sartori Memorial Hospital of natural causes at the age of 71 years.
He is survived by his wife, Marvel Gerjerts, one daughter, Teresa DeHoff one son, Gregory Gerjerts, and four grandchildren all of Cedar Falls. Paul was preceded in death by his parents.
His Memorial service was held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, October 13, 1998 at Nazareth Lutheran Church. He was buried in Fairview Cemetery. A memorial fund will be established.

GERSEMA, DELOS MOELLER was born July 15, 1925 at New Hartford, Iowa the son of George & Elsie (Moeller) Gersema. He graduated from New Hartford High School in 1943 then served in the Naval Air Corp in the Pacific Theatre from September 24, 1943 until April 4, 1946. Delos and Nellie McCready were united in marriage July 18, 1947 at Waterloo, Iowa. He was employed by Carnation Dairy in Waterloo from 1947 to 1956. He was Project Supervisor for Larsen Construction (now known as Cedar Falls Construction) from 1956 to 1961 and was Sales and Service Coordinator for Curbmaster of America from 1961 to 1975. Delos and Nellie owned and operated the Royal Rest Motel in Chariton, Iowa from 1977 until 1994 when they retired. He died Sunday, February 8, 2004 at Sartori Memorial Hospital in Cedar Falls at the age of 78 years.
Survivors include his wife, Nellie, of Cedar Falls; two sons, David (Kathy) of Santa Monica, California and William of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Vicki (Kevin) Kamienski of Cedar Falls and Susan (James) Duncan of Round Rock, Texas; 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, one great great granddaughter; and two sisters, Helen (James) Reardon of Belton, Texas and Marjorie Hoy of Cedar Falls. Delos was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Merlyn, George, and James.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 14, 2004 at the Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home with burial at Fairview Cemetery with military rites conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49.

GETTY, GERALD E. was born October 24, 1939 in Freeport, Illinois, the son of Fred and Florence (Folgate) Getty. He married Betty June Roberts in December of 1958. They were later divorced. Gerald married Betty Louise Graf on August 28, 1982 in Waterloo, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1958-1962. Gerald was employed at Control-O-Fax for 35 years, serving as Plant Manager in California from 1968-1976 and in Georgia from 1976-1981. He was employed at Congdon Printing Company in Cedar Falls for the past 10 years. Gerald served on the Board of Directors for the Sturgis Falls Celebration, the Cedar Falls Community Credit Union and Junior Achievement of Black Hawk Land. He was also involved with the United Way, Boy Scouts of America and the Red Cross. Gerald died Monday, June 11, 2001, at Sartori Memorial Hospital, at 61 years of age.
Survivors include his wife, Betty L. Getty, Cedar Falls; one son, John Paul Getty, Bakersfield, CA; two daughters, Julie Crider, Kerrville, TX and Tamela Elliott, Atlanta, GA; two stepdaughters, Tamre Gordon, Janesville, IA and Angela Keith of California; three grandsons, Cody, Christopher, and Casey Crider; four step grandchildren, Ryan and Amber Gordon, Alisha Keith and Tanner Wood; two brothers, Duane Getty, Dallas, TX and his twin, Harold Getty, Waterloo; and one sister, Mary Ellen Werkmeister, Waterloo.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 207 W. Louise St., Waterloo. Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Cedar Falls, where military committal rites were conducted by Cedar Falls AMVETS Post 49. A memorial fund will be established.

GIBSON, NICOLE LEE , 24, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, February 18, 2004, of injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Cedar Falls. She was born November 7, 1979 in Waterloo, Iowa, the daughter of Paul Gibson and Debra Lee. Nicole was a 1998 graduate of Cedar Falls High School and was a Shift Supervisor at Hardee's Family Restaurant in Waterloo, Iowa. She volunteered for several summers with the Summer Handicapped Program at Hansen Elementary School in Cedar Falls; participated in A.A.U. basketball while in Jr. High School and was a member of the Holmes Jr. High School and Cedar Falls High School Girls Basketball teams. Nicole also participated in the Girl Scouts and assisted in caring for her maternal grandmother, Evalyn Lee.
She is survived by her mother, Debra (fiancé, Gary Steffeney) Gibson of Cedar Falls and her father, Paul (Donna) Gibson of Waverly, Iowa; her fiancé, Jason Miller of Cedar Falls; two brothers, Jonathan and Michael Gibson, both of Cedar Falls; her paternal grandparents, Robert and Evelyn Gibson and maternal grandmother, Evalyn Lee, all of Cedar Falls, and her dog, "Tank".
Nicole was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Melvin Lee.
Funeral services were 1:30 p.m. Monday, February 23, 2004, at Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church, with burial at Fairview Cemetery, both in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established at a later date.

GLASSEL, HAZEL MARIE HARMON was born August 18, 1920 in La Porte City, Iowa, the daughter of Chester Allen and Muriel Daisy (Parsons) Harmon. She married Louvon T. “Louie” Glassel on July 25, 1938 in Waterloo, Iowa. Hazel worked for John Deere & Company during WW II, operated the Day Old Bakery in Cedar Falls and was an Assistant Administrator at the Cedar Falls Western Home for over 20 years, retiring in 1979. She and Louie retired to Mission, Texas in December of 1979. There Hazel helped form the Valley Doll Club and belonged to the Valley Quilt Club. Louie preceded her in death on June 20, 1995. Hazel had a long battle with Alzheimer’s Disease and died Friday, November 29, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon, Iowa, at 82 years of age.
She is survived by two daughters, Sharon Ann (Roger) Christensen of Lansing, Iowa and Carolyn Rae (Clare) Tweedt of Ames, Iowa; a son, Allen Lee (Jackie) Glassel of Waterloo; four grandchildren and a step-grandson; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth Allen (Helene) Harmon of Lindstrom, Minnesota and three sisters, Helen (Ralph) Briden of Phoenix, Arizona, Neoma Bolton of Shell Rock, Iowa and Sally Kurt of Waterloo.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband and parents, a son, Timothy Glassel and a grandson.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2002, at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial at Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens, both in Cedar Falls. A memorial fund will be established.

GOODER, GLADYCE J. was born May 14, 1904 near McIntire, Iowa, the daughter of Oliver L. and Cora E. (Harrison) Gooder. She was a 1921 graduate of McIntire High School and a 1929 graduate of Gates Business College in Waterloo, Iowa. Gladyce attended Iowa State Teachers College (UNI) and later worked the school’s office until 1942. She then moved to Knoxville, Tennessee, where she was the secretary for the Health Officer of the Tennessee Valley Authority from 1942 until 1967. Gladyce returned to Cedar Falls in 1970 and moved to the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home. She was a member of Cedarloo Church of Christ in Cedar Falls and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program at the Lutheran Home. Gladyce died Sunday, September 1, 2002, at the Lutheran Home, at 98 years of age.
She is survived by two nephews, John H. Church of Cresco, Iowa and Robert D. Inskeep of Farmington, New Mexico.
Gladyce was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Lester Gooder; two sisters, Enid Church and Ruby Inskeep, and a nephew, William D. Church.
Funeral services were 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 4, 2002, at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home Chapel with burial at Wayne Cemetery in McIntire, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Home.

GOODWIN, MADELINE I. 86, of the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home died Tuesday, May 25, 2004 at the Lutheran Home. She was born August 9, 1917 at Juliaetta, Idaho the daughter of Miles Benton & Bertha Maude (Bowers) Pierce. Madeline was united in marriage to Max Kingsley October 24, 1938 in Spokane, Washington and they were later divorced. She married James Clifford Goodwin August 18, 1961 at Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. He preceded her in death September 4, 1992.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol (Russ) Towsley of Waterloo; two sons, Larry (Judi) Kingsley of Groveland, New York and Ron Kingsley of Ninilchik, Alaska; eleven grandchildren and twenty-five great grandchildren. Madeline was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one stepson, Robert Kingsley; one stepdaughter, Maxine Kingsley Tucker; one granddaughter, two great grandsons; one brother, Thomas Pierce; and four sisters, Louise Hanks, Pauline Sutherlin Margaret Jensen and Frances Phillips.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 1, 2004 at the Cedar Falls Lutheran Home with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery in Waterloo. Memorials may be directed to the Lutheran Home.

GRAHAM, LARRY DEAN "RED", 64, of Cedar Falls died Wednesday, September 25, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics of natural causes. He was born August 6, 1938 in Waterloo, Iowa the son of Ted and Nellie (Southard) Graham. He married Patricia Sands September 7, 1957 in Cedar Falls. Larry was employed at John Deere in Waterloo for 37 years retiring in 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Pat, of Cedar Falls; three sons, Mike Graham of Dillon, CO, Ty (Angie) Graham and Shannon (Colleen) Graham, both of Cedar Falls; two daughters, Joni (Dave) Krejchi of Cedar Falls and Pennie (Mark) Kellenberger of Davenport, Iowa; six grandchildren, and one brother, Ray Graham of Bloomfield, New Mexico.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 28, 2002 at First Christian Church in Cedar Falls with burial in Finchford Cemetery in Finchford, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the family.

GRAM, JESSE was born October 10. 1909 in Goodell, Iowa the son of Jacob B. and Mette Katrine (Skow) Gram. He married Esther Pfenninger on April 28, 1932 in Charles City, Iowa. She preceded him in death on May 14, 1992. Jesse was employed at the Viking Pump alloys foundry and then was employed at John Deere from 1943 until his retirement in 1971. He died Monday, December 11, 2000 at Sartori Memorial Hospital at the age of 91 years.
Survivors include two sons, Harold Gram of Cedar Falls, Marvin Gram and his wife, Norma, of Fort Pierce, Florida; five grandchildren, Lynn, Mitchell, Spencer, Scott, and Lori; and three great grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, and Jake.
Jesse was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five brothers, Alfred, Mads, Berthel, Harry and Clarence, and one sister, Karoline Gram.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 16, 2000 at St. John Lutheran Church with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens.
