WEST UNION -- Clayton Schriener, 84, of West Union, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Mercy Medical Center, Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness; survivors include his wife, Alma; a daughter, Cynthia Schell of Stevens Point, Wis.; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Wesley of Cedar Rapids, Lester of Elgin and Harvey of Beaverton, Ore.; and two sisters, Margaret Gatzkie of Cedar Rapids and Lucille Stahr of West Union; he was preceded in death by an infant brother; services at 2 p.m. today at Bethel Presbyterian Church, West Union, with burial in Woodlawn Cemetery, Oelwein; Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, is in charge of arrangements; Mr. Schriener attended Upper Iowa University, Fayette; worked for Central States Power & Light, Elkader; REA , Independence; served in the U.S. Navy Seabees as chief electrician mate in England; worked for Public Utility Industries in various capacities; worked in sales for Malleable Iron Fittings Co., Branford, Conn.; then was a broker and manager for McKelby Realty of St. Peters, Mo., retiring in 1987.

WEST UNION -- Lee Alfred Batterson, 49, of West Union, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center, West Union, after a brief illness; survivors include his wife, Kay; a daughter, Rebecca Batterson of Mesa, Ariz.; a son, Lyle at home; his mother, Mary Batterson of Wadena; two brothers, Frank of Fredericksburg and Ray of Gilbert Ariz.; and a sister, Lyla Lamphier of Wadena; he was preceded in death by his father, Lyle; and a brother, Dale; services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Wadena Presbyterian Church, with burial in Wadena City Cemetery, with military rites; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Leonard Funeral Home, Elgin, and after noon Wednesday at the church; Mr. Batterson served in the Vietnam War; he worked as a carpenter for a few years and for the past 23 years had been a butcher at lockers in Fayette, Arlington and Wadena.

OSAGE -- Wilma A. Hintz, 86, of Osage, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Osage Rehabilitation and Health Care Center of natural causes; survivors include her friends, Burrell and Clara Belle Raymond of rural Orchard; she was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, in 1975; services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, Charles City; friends may call for an hour before services Tuesday at the funeral home; Mrs. Hintz received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls, and had taught in country schools in the Charles City area; later she and her husband farmed in the Floyd and Orchard area, retiring in 1973.

SUMNER -- Elaine June Reimler, 74, of Sumner, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at home of natural causes; survivors include a son, John of Waterloo; two daughters, Gail Smith of Bettendorf and Sue Pleggenkuhle of Clear Lake; three grandchildren; a brother, Roland Stahlhut of Dunedin, Fla.; and a sister, Lavon Yungtum of Sumner; she was preceded in death by her husband, Gene, on Dec. 2, 1989; an infant son, James; and a brother, Duane Stahlhut; services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church, Sumner, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home, Sumner, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church; Mrs. Reimler worked for a brief time at Overton Chemical Sales, Sumner, and worked for the Sumner Locker for 19 years; she was a charter member of the Sumner Civic Club.

GLADBROOK -- Ed Haack, 92, of Gladbrook, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Westbrook Acres Nursing Home, Gladbrook, of natural causes; survivors include two daughters, Mary Katzer of Conrad and Judy DeVore of Waterloo; two sons, Dennis and Dale, both of Gladbrook; and 10 grandchildren and and seven great-grandchildren; he was preceded in death by his wife, Lois, on March 13, 1984; three brothers, Alva, Elmer and Dick; and two sisters, Leona Clarksean and Erma Sievers; services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Peace United Church of Christ, with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery, both in Gladbrook; friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Goettsch-Perrin Funeral Home, Gladbrook, with family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; military rites will be conducted by Gladbrook American Legion Ehrig-McTurk Post 172; Mr. Haack was employed as a hired man in the Pipestone area until 1936, then worked for Pete Wilken in Gladbrook; he served in the U.S. Army, then he farmed near Gladbrook, retiring in 1978.

TAMA --Don H. Albert, 49, of Tama, died Friday, Oct. 1, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, after a heart attack while officiating a high school football game in Hudson; survivors include his wife, Pat; two sons, Curt of Des Moines and Sam of Tama; a daughter, Chris Albert of Toledo; three grandchildren; his father, Merle Albert of Reinbeck; and a sister, Sue Holley of Cedar Falls; he was preceded in death by his mother, Lucille Dutcher Albert; services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Tama, with burial in Reinbeck Cemetery, Reinbeck; friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Henderson-Overton Funeral Home, Toledo, and from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service; a memorial fund is being established; Mr. Albert attended junior college in Webster City, then transferred to Iowa State University, Ames, where he obtained his degree in agronomy; he worked as an agronomist for Northrup King Seeds and later Pioneer Hi-Bred, where he was an assistant manager in Ottumwa; in 1985 he moved to Tama and opened Don's Auto Parts, which he was operating; he was past president of the Tama Toledo Pool Board.

CONRAD -- Dorothy M. Moler, 91, of Conrad, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at Oakview Nursing Home, Conrad, of natural causes; survivors include two sons, C. Dale of Green Mountain and Gary D. of Conrad; eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford M.; a daughter, Joyce Ann Rooker; a brother; and four sisters; services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at United Church of Christ, Green Mountain, with burial in Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, Marshalltown; friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Johnston Funeral Home, Conrad, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; a memorial fund will be established.

IONIA --John E. Koskie, 94, of Ionia, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Lucile, of New Hampton Care Center; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Matt and Martin, both of Minnesota; he was preceded in death by two sons, Dwight and, and a infant, LaVerne; two infant grandchildren; two brothers, Ben and Louis; and two sisters, Anne Arndt and Elizabeth Koskie; services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Ionia, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Ionia Funeral Home, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. prayer service.

CEDAR FALLS -- Mildred M. Miller, 93, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999 at The Western Home of natural causes; services 11 a.m. Tuesday at Richardson Funeral Home, 266-3525, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, visitation 3 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; memorials to The Western Home or First United Methodist Church.

WATERLOO -- Marvel J. Frazee, 53, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes; services pending with Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel-Downtown, 234-5779.

JANESVILLE -- Elaine R. Johnson, 66, of Janesville, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home of cancer; services pending with Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, 352-1187.

HAMPTON -- Terry L. Patterson, 25, of Hampton, formerly of Clarksville, died Saturday, Sept. 2, 1999, at home; cause of death was suicide, according to the Chickasaw County Sheriff's Office; services 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Church of Christ, Clarksville; visitation 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Schwartz Funeral Home, Clarksville, (319) 278-4245.

WAUCOMA -- Ruth Hackman, 85, formerly of Waucoma, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at New Hampton Rehabilitation and Care Center, New Hampton, after a lengthy illness; services pending with Burnham-Wood Funeral Home, West Union, (319 422-3615.

WAVERLY-- Glen L. Spears, 82, of Waverly, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at home of natural causes; services pending with Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, 352-1187.

ALDEN -- David Hartwig, 46, of Alden, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, at home; cause of death pending an autopsy; memorial services pending with Surls Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, (515) 648-9554.

SUMNER -- Edmund Thurm, 83, of rural Sumner, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Sunrise Guest Home, Fredericksburg, of natural causes; services pending with Rettig Funeral Home, Tripoli, (319) 882-4285.

DECORAH -- Alert N. Lovstuen, 87, of Decorah, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Green Lea Manor, Mabel, Minn., of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Velva; two daughters, Donna Vine of Decorah and Vivian of Mabel; a son, Norbert of Decorah; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alton of Cedar Rapids and Norton of Decorah; and a sister, Thelma Moen of Decorah; he was preceded in death by a sister, Martha Moen; and a brother, Milton; services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Burr Oak Lutheran Church, Burr Oak, with burial in Burr Oak Cemetery; friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at French & Balik Funeral Home, Decorah; Mr. Lovstuen retired from farming in 1977.

IOWA FALLS -- Emory Harris, 78, of Iowa Falls, died Friday, Nov. 12, 1999, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Della; a son, Bruce of Iowa Falls; a daughter, Susan Rogers of Stanton; three stepdaughters, Vickii Rutz of Iowa Falls, Margo Hicok of Nora Springs and Stephanie Hill of Newville, Pa.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Audre Jones of Waverly and Dorothy Mitchell of Spirit Lake; he was preceded in death by his first wife, Phyllis; graveside services were 11 a.m. today at Union Cemetery, Iowa Falls; Linn's Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, was in charge of arrangements; memorials may be directed to Della Harris, 517 Ironwood Ave., Iowa Falls, IA 50126; Mr. Harris farmed northwest of Iowa Falls.

NEW HAMPTON -- Celine M. Galligan, 72, of New Hampton, died at home Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, of cancer; survivors include her husband, Duane; four daughters, Colleen Leichtman, Mary Winter, Shellie Boos and Lona Sweitzer, all of New Hampton; four sons, Tom of Cedar Falls, Denny of Minneapolis, Bob of New Hampton and Dick of Cedar Rapids; 18 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Clifford and Reynold Burgart, both of New Hampton; she was preceded in death by an infant son, Joseph; services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in New Hampton; friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Larkin-Martin-Hugeback Funeral Home, New Hampton, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and 7:30 p.m. parish Scripture service; visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church; memorials may be directed to North Iowa Hospice; Mrs. Galligan worked at the JC Penney store in New Hampton for 17 years.

Walters, 63, of Ionia, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at home from complications of cancer; survivors include his wife, Helen; a son, Steve of Trevor, Wis.; two daughters, Tammy Wellik and Connie Mahlstedt, both of Ionia; six grandchildren and three stepgrandchildren; his mother, Edna Roalfs of Charles City; two brothers, Greg Roalfs of Greys Lake, Ill., and Craig Roalfs of Osage; and a sister, Sherry Burrell of Waterloo; services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Congregational United Church of Christ, Ionia, with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Sunnyside Chapel Funeral Home, Charles City, and for an hour before services Tuesday at the church; memorials may be directed to the family; Mr. Walters worked for 30 years at White Farm Equipment, Charles City, and for five years at Featherlite, Nashua; he served in the U.S. National Guard.

SPILLVILLE -- Arthur Jarosh, 87, of Spillville, died Saturday, Nov. 13, 1999, at Aase Haugen Home, Decorah, after a brief illness; survivors include his wife, Celia; a daughter, Patricia Jarosh of Los Angeles; four sons, Wayne of Nevada City, Calif., Kenneth of Janesville, Dean of Silver City, N.M., and Daniel of Pulan, Ga.; and three sisters, Velma Drilling and Frances Moudry, both of Decorah, and Adeline Broihier of Sumner; services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Spillville, with burial in the church cemetery; friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Balik Funeral Home, Spillville, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service; visitation also for an hour before services Tuesday at the church.

CHARLES CITY -- Victor L. Schilling, 76, of Charles City, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at home of natural causes; survivors include eight sons, Greg of Waterloo, Jeff of Fairbanks, Alaska, Jerry of Red Wing, Minn., Randy of Charles City, Steve of San Diego, Tom and Dan, both of Charles City, and Ron of Dayton, Ohio; three daughters, Janet Walker of Red Wing, Connie Palmersheim and Lori Davis, both of Minneapolis; and 26 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; he was preceded in death by his wife, Lou Eva; a twin sister; an infant son; and a granddaughter; services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, both in Charles City; graveside military rites will be conducted by Charles City Ceremonial Unit; friends may call until 9 p.m. today at Fullerton Hage Funeral Home, Charles City, with family present from 4 to 8 p.m.; visitation also from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home and for an hour before services at the church; memorials may be directed to the family; Mr. Schilling was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Southern Philippines as a sharpshooter, engaging in the battle on the island of Okinawa, Japan; he worked several jobs, including driving trucks and farming, before settling in Charles City and beginning a 30-year career as a machinist at the former Oliver Tractor Factory, retiring in 1982.

CEDAR FALLS -- Daniel Sullivan, 85, of Windsor Care Center, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at the center of natural causes; services pending with Richardson Funeral Home, 266-3525.

WATERLOO -- Lori Ann McCann, 38, of Waterloo, died Thursday, Nov. 11, 1999, at Allen Hospital; cause of death pending an autopsy; private burial was in Garden of Memories; memorial services 1 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care, 232-3235, with family present from noon until services; memorials to the family.
