WATERLOO -- Edith DeMaris, 74, of 617 Jane St., died Tuesday, Feb. 29, 2000, at home of cancer.
She was born July 7, 1925, in Latimer, daughter of Carl and Ellen Wedin Ellison. She married Clifford DeMaris. They later divorced.
Ms. DeMaris was a secretary at Industrial Fabrication and Machine, and had worked at Schultz Manufacturing and Fahr Beverage.
Survived by: a daughter, Kathy Wynkoop of Zion, Ill.; three sons, Larry of Cedar Falls, Jerry of Ankeny and Craig of Waterloo; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Kirchoff of Roseville, Minn.; and a brother, Wilbur Ellison of Camerillo, Calif.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Linda Shapiro; and a sister, Doris Ellison.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Waterloo, with burial in Hampton Cemetery, Hampton. There will be no visitation, her body was cremated. Locke Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to Zion Lutheran Church Library Fund or the Cancer Treatment Center.

WATERLOO -- Eleanor Jean Hudson, 92, formerly of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, in Warrensburg, Mo., of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 4, 1907, in Waterloo, daughter of Arch Denslow and Norma Frances Priest Hayes. She married Francis Byron "Frank" Hudson on Aug. 20, 1930, in La Porte City. He preceded her in death.
Survived by: a daughter, Virginia Ann "Ginger" Young of Warrensburg; and two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Robert F. Hayes.
Committal services: will be in Fairview Cemetery, Waterloo. Holdren & Sweeney-Phillips, Warrensburg, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to Educational Development Center Scholarship Fund, Central Missouri State University, in care of Central's Foundation.

WATERLOO -- James Murray, 66, of Waterloo, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Karrington Cottages of natural causes.
He was born Nov. 22, 1932, in Boston, Mass.
Services: There will be no services. Friends may call from 1 to 5 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with burial in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cedar Rapids, on Friday.

WATERLOO -- Edith Mae Shindley, 94, of Indianola, formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Indianola Good Samaritan Center from complications of multiple strokes.
She was born May 10, 1904, in Des Moines, daughter of Edward and Bertha Turner Hall. She was employed at Chamberlain Manufacturing Co., retiring in 1966 as a machinist. After retirement she was a housekeeper in the Waterloo area.
Survived by: two sons, Paul and William Ehlert, both of Indianola; a stepdaughter, Betty Sell of La Porte City; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; and a foster brother, Elmer Gaede of Tripoli.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, Indianola, with graveside services at 1 p.m. Saturday at Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Friends may call after 3 p.m. today at Overton Funeral Home, Indianola, with family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Memorials: may be directed to Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, 805 N. First St., Indianola, IA 50125.

GILBERTVILLE -- Marie Josephine Schares, 72, of 6339 Gilbertville Road, died at home Saturday, May 1, 1999, of cancer.
She was born Nov. 25, 1926, in Milo, daughter of Henry and Rosa Yager Dittmer. She married Jerome V. Schares on Sept. 12, 1950, in Milo. He died Oct. 17, 1971.
Mrs. Schares and her husband farmed in the Gilbertville area.
Survived by: four sons, Larry, Kevin and Arnold, all of La Porte City, and Dale of Gilbertville; four daughters, Sr. Roxanne Schares SSND of East Africa, Betty Conrad of Washburn, Karen Munson of Waverly and Janelle Blanchard of La Porte City; 19 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; five brothers, Alban Dittmer of Waterloo, Jerome Dittmer of Lacona, and Bernard, Sylvester and Gerald Dittmer, all of Milo; and a sister, Berniece Dittmer of Des Moines.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, James and Paul Dittmer.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in St. Mary's Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, where there will be 3 p.m. Senior Citizen's rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the church, Don Bosco High School or Cedar Valley Hospice.

CEDAR FALLS -- Irene A. Beier,83, of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 7, 1915, in Spring Fountain, daughter of Herman and Elsie Blech Benzine. She married Melvin W. Beier on Aug. 17, 1939, in Fairbank. He died Nov. 23, 1986.
Survived by: a son, Kenneth of Cedar Falls; a daughter, Janet Lee of Cedar Falls; three grandchildren; two brothers, Bill of Oran and Dick of Princeton, Texas; and two sisters, Helane Brickman of Sumner and Phyllis Ehlers of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, LaVerne and Marvin Benzine.
Services: 10 a.m. Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in Garden of Memories, Waterloo. Friends may call from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Dahl-VanHove-Schoof Funeral Home, with family present from 4 to 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

CEDAR FALLS -- Goldie Baker Kuster, 86, of Granby, Colo., formerly of Cedar Falls and Florida Keys, died April 24, 1999 at Greeley Hospital, Greeley, Colo., of natural causes.
She was born Jan. 25, 1913, in Greene County, daughter of John and Emma Gonseth Jones. She married Earl Baker on Jan. 24, 1932, in Waterloo. He died Jan. 23, 1969. She then married William Kuster on May 3, 1975, in Granby. He died June 14, 1982.
Mrs. Kuster and her first husband owned and operated a farming and livestock business west of Cedar Falls, retiring in 1969.
Survived by: a son, John L. Baker of Granby; two daughters, Mary Lee Wray of Loveland, Colo., and Bonnie L. Baker of Kansas City, Kan.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Services: were April 28 at Church of Eternal Hills, Granby. Burial was in Grand Lake Cemetery, Rocky Mountain National Park, Grand Lake, Colo.
Memorials: may be directed to Senior Bus Fund, Grand County Council on Aging, 469 E. Topas, Granby, CO 80446.

WATERLOO -- Marvel J. Frazee, 53, of Waterloo, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center of cancer.
She was born Jan. 30, 1946, in Waterloo, daughter of Matthew and Esther Reyer Anderson. She married Harry E. Frazee on Nov. 24, 1986, in Dubuque.
Mrs. Frazee was a 1964 graduate of Waterloo East High School.
Survived by: her husband; three sons, Lance Kilby of Texas and Raph and Raoul Kilby, both of Waterloo; two stepdaughters, Dawn Frazee of Waterloo and Kristy Frazee of Omaha, Neb.; two brothers, Mike Anderson of Waterloo and Randy Anderson of Woodward; and two sisters, Marilyn Frank of Waterloo and Marge Amos of New Hartford.
Preceded in death by: her parents.
Services: 10:30 a.m. today at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery. Kearns Huisman-Schumacher Chapel-downtown is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

EAGLE CENTER -- The Rev. Lawrence J. Guter, 81, formerly of Eagle Center, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Stone Hill Care Center, Dubuque, of natural causes.
He was born Feb. 9, 1918, in Waverly, son of Joseph C. and Anna Josephine Laube Guter. He attended Loras College, Dubuque, and the Theological College, Washington, D.C., and was ordained in 1945 in Dubuque. He taught at Loras College from 1945 to 1956 and served as dean of studies from 1956 to 1958. He became principal of Wahlert High School, Dubuque, when it opened in 1959 and served there until 1975.
He was executive coordinator and principal of Beckman High School, Dyersville, from 1975 to 1982, was pastor of St. Marys of Mount Carmel, Eagle Center, and Immaculate Conception, Blessing, from 1982 to 1993, and was administrator of these parishes from 1983 until his retirement.
Survived by: a brother, Dr. Gerald A. Guter of Bakersville, Calif.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday at St. Marys of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the church, where there will be a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service. Visitation also for an hour before services Friday. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, Waterloo, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the church.

WATERLOO -- Lula P. Puhl, 83, of 201 W. Ridgeway Ave., died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 1999, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.
She was born April 26, 1916, in Palmira, Mo., daughter of Grant and Ida LeMaster Anderson. She married Onno Johnson on June 28, 1937, in Nashua. He preceded her in death. She married Edward Puhl on April 20, 1963, in Galena, Ill.
Survived by: her husband; a daughter, Marlene Theis of Ocala, Fla.; a son, James C. Johnson of Minneapolis; and five grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.
Preceded in death by: two brothers and five sisters.
Graveside services: 2 p.m. Thursday at Garden of Memories. There will be no visitation. Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care is in charge of arrangements.

CEDAR FALLS --Dale L. Slaughter Jr., 76, of 2116 Victory Drive, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at home of cancer.
He was born Oct. 15, 1922, in Jesup, son of Dale and Eunice Cook Slaughter Sr. He married Lois Singleton on Dec. 18, 1942, in Waterloo.
Mr. Slaughter was employed as a machinist at John Deere, retiring in 1985 after 44 years of employment.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Jeffrey of Union and John of Montgomery, Ill.; three daughters, Linda Moore and Caroline Slaughter, both of Waterloo, and Mary Slaughter of Cedar Falls; and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a son, Dale R.; and a brother, Lee.
Memorial services: 11 a.m. Friday at St. John Lutheran Church, with private family inurnment in Greenwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation, his body was cremated. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.

CEDAR FALLS -- Ruth B. Hoeppner, 87, of Cedar Falls, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 1999, at home of advanced lung disease.
She was born Nov. 8, 1911, in Popejoy, daughter of Roy E. and Alta Ann Gates Altenhein. She married Harold W. Hoeppner in Traer. He died Sept. 23, 1983.
Survived by: a daughter, Jo Nickel of Cedar Falls; three sons, Donald of Cedar Rapids, Curtis of Rockford, Ill., and Eldon of Reinbeck; 10 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Roger Altenhein of Traer and Robert of Cedar Falls.
Preceded in death by: a son, Vernon; and two brothers, John and Paul Altenhein.
Services: 11 a.m. Friday at Cedar Heights Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls, with burial at 1 p.m. in Reinbeck Cemetery, Reinbeck. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, and for an hour before services Friday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to American Lung Association, American Heart Association, American Cancer Association, American Diabetes Foundation or the church.
