WATERLOO -- Katherine Marie Stevens, 85, formerly of 2503 Randolph St., died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at the Mitchellville Care Center, Mitchellville, from a blood clot to the heart; services 10 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Waterloo, with burial in St. John's Cemetery, Independence; visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street, 234-6274, where there will be a 4 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service; visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church; memorials to Alzheimer's Research.

WATERLOO -- Ardith R. Henderson, 43, of 250 Cottage Grove Ave., died Sunday, Nov. 7, 1999, at Allen Hospital of natural causes; services 11 a.m. Friday at Payne Memorial AME Church, with burial in Elmwood Cemeter; visitation 3 to 7 p.m. today at Sanders Funeral Service, 232-5667, and after 9 a.m. Friday at the church; memorials to the family at 155 Letsch Road, where they will receive friends.

NEW HAMPTON -- Wendell Arndt, 73, of New Hampton, died Friday, Oct. 15, 1999, at the New Hampton Airport from injuries suffered in an ultralight plane accident; memorial services 11:30 a.m. Friday at Conway Funeral Home, New Hampton, (515) 394-4331, with family present half an hour before services; inurnment and military rites will be in New Hampton Cemetery.

DUMONT -- Grace L. Wearda, 98, of Dumont, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Franklin General Nursing Facility, Hampton, of natural causes; services pending with Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home, Dumont, (515) 456-3232.

WAVERLY -- Eileen J. Albrecht, 78, of Waverly, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Cedar Falls Health Care Center of natural causes; services 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Waverly; visitation 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, (319) 352-1187, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.

OSAGE -- Thomas Blake, 49, of St. Ansgar, formerly of Osage, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage, after a sudden heart attack; services 11 a.m. Saturday at Visitation Catholic Church, Stacyville, with inurnment at a later date; visitation 4 to 9 p.m. Friday at the church hall, where there will be a 7 p.m. Scripture service; Champion Funeral Home, Osage, (515) 732-3706, is in charge of arrangements.

INDEPENDENCE -- Rudolph A. Leytze, 86, Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at home after a brief illness; services 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Oakwood Cemetery, both in Independence; visitation 5 to 8 p.m. today and any time Friday at White Funeral Home, Independence, (319) 334-2595, with family present from 5 to 8 p.m. today; memorials to Buchanan County Health Trust or the Mustang Foundation.

RICEVILLE -- Merritt Eugene Messersmith, 75, of Riceville, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, after a massive heart attack; services 10:30 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Riceville; visitation 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, (319) 547-2323, with a 5 p.m. Knights of Columbus rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

INDEPENDENCE -- Mary E. Hermann, 98, of Independence, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Peoples Memorial Hospital Long-Trem Care Unit, Independence, after a brief illness; survivors include two grandchildren, Gene and Dean Cummings, both of Independence; and a great-granddaughter; she was preceded in death by her husband, Carl, in 1963; two brothers, Alva and Ralph Fest; and three sisters, Grace Fest, Mathilda Franck and Julia Walters; services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Reiff Funeral Home, with burial in Wilson Cemetery, both in Independence; friends may call today at the funeral home, where there will be a 7 p.m. Rebekah service, and from 8 a.m. until services Friday.

IOWA FALLS -- Perry Carroll Aust, 79, of Iowa Falls, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital, Iowa Falls, after a lengthy illness; survivors include his wife, Roberta; a son, Lorie of Iowa Falls; two daughters, Sara Christensen of Knoxville, Tenn., and Rebecca Mathison of Columbus, Ind.; seven grandchildren; a brother, Bennett of Sioux City; and two sisters, Clarice Whitney of Bulverde, Texas, and Patt Anderson of Custer, S.D.; services will be 11 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, Iowa Falls; friends may call until 8 p.m. today at Surls Funeral Home, Iowa Falls, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., and with a 7 p.m. Elks service; a U.S. Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, Mr. Aust was a petroleum marketer, retiring in 1986.

DECORAH -- Eugene M. "Gene" Carolan, 70, of Decorah, formerly of Lawler, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Green Lea Manor, Mabel, Minn., of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy; survivors include seven sons, Tom and Jerry, both of Waucoma, Steven of Decorah, Daniel of Lawler, Ron of Fredericksburg Terry of Omaha, Neb., and Mark of West Des Moines; 17 grandchildren; two brothers, James of Lawler, Francis of Charles City and Paul of Tucson, Ariz.; two sisters, Ann Ellingson and Bernadette Nosbisch, both of Cresco; and his stepmother, Lucile Carolan of Waterloo; services were 11 a.m. today at St. Benedict Catholic Church, Decorah, with burial in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Cemetery; Fjelstul Funeral Home, Decorah, was in charge of arrangements.

GRUNDY CENTER -- Marlys Lorraine Shoup, 86, of Grundy Center, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long-Term Care Unit, Grundy Center, of natural causes; survivors include a son, Ronald of Grundy Center; a daughter, Cheryle Fisher of Roundup, Mont.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold Groenewald of Lime Springs; she was preceded in death by her husband, Fred; a grandson; a sister, Vivian Tiesman; and two brothers, Donald Groenwald and Kenneth Groenewald; services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Grundy Center, with burial in Reinbeck Cemetery, Reinbeck; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, with family present from 6 to 9 p.m.; visitation also for an hour before services Friday at the church; a memorial fund has been established; Mrs. Shoup was a waitress at Maid Rite and then at Zeno's, both in Grundy Center; she also did house cleaning.

APLINGTON -- Marcele Thompson, 92, of Aplington, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at Maple Manor Care Center, Aplington of natural causes; survivors include three daughters, Louise Holguin of South Pasadena, Calif., Margaret Christensen of Fayette and Charlotte Sanders of Rockville, Md.; three grandchildren and a great-grandson; and a sister, Ethel Thompson of Bradenton, Fla.; she was preceded in death by her husband, Frederick, on Oct. 9, 1977; and two sisters, Evelyn Fisher and Dorothy Apland; services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, with burial in Pleasant View Cemetery, both in Aplington; friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday at Schwartz Funeral Home, Aplington, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. visitation also from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home; Mrs. Thompson attended Iowa Teacher's College and the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls, and received a teaching certificate and a bachelor's degree in elementary education; she taught at the Geneseo Consolidated School, then at a rural school in Butler County for four years, taught in Aplington and later Parkersburg for 18 years, retiring in 1972.

ELDORA -- Curtis L. Harmon, 79, of Eldora, died Wednesday, Nov. 10, 1999, at Eldora Regional Medical Center of cancer; survivors include two daughters, Nancy Humke of Des Moines and Jan Stonewall of Cedar Falls; two sons, Don of San Francisco and Bob of Des Moines; and five grandchildren; he was preceded in death by a brother, Earl; memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church, with burial in Eastlawn Cemetery, both in Eldora; friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home, Eldora; memorials may be directed to the church; Mr. Harmon attended Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls, for two years, then worked for an airplane manufacturer in California and later in Omaha; he owned and managed a Standard station and small grocery store in Eldora, retiring in 1984.

NEW HARTFORD -- Glenn H. Nunnally, 87, of New Hartford, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at home of natural causes; survivors include three sons, Vern of Cedar Falls, Jim and Ernie, both of New Hartford; two daughters, Loretta Philo of Cedar Falls and Shirley Williams of Evening Shade, Ark.; 11 grandchildren, seven stepgrandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren and a stepgreat-great-grandchild; and a sister, Theresa Hemenway of San Francisco; he was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, on Nov. 16, 1978; services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery, both in New Hartford; friends may call from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the church; Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements; memorials may be directed to the Bremer-Butler Hospice or the church; Mr. Nunnally was a welder for Associated Manufacturing, Waterloo Register and Hinson Manufacturing, all in Waterloo, retiring in 1977.

DECORAH -- Sheryl Franken, 43, of Decorah, formerly of Aplington, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital, Decorah, of cancer; survivors include a son, Jason of Buffalo Grove, Ill.; a daughter, Amy Franken of Washburn; her parents, Georgie C. and Lois Jungling Schipper of Aplington; a brother, Chad Schipper of Aplington; two sisters, Ranae Diekman of Bird Island, Minn., and JoLyn Timmer of Parkersburg; her grandparents, Henry and Gesina Jungling of Aplington; and a special friend, Bruce Graff of Decorah; services will be 1 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Reformed Church, Aplington, with burial in Allison Cemetery, Allison; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at French & Balik Funeral Home, Decorah; 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and 9 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Schwartz Funeral Home, Aplington; and for an hour before services at the church.

RICEVILLE -- Alice W. Groth, 94, of Osage, formerly of Riceville, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at Mitchell County Memorial Hospital, Osage, of natural causes; survivors include two sons, Eldon of Lime Springs and Merle of Riceville; a daughter, Elaine Eschweiler of Riceville; and eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; she was preceded in death by her husband, Harry, on March 30, 1984; four brothers; four sisters; and a great-grandson; services were 10 a.m. today at St. Paul's Maple Leaf Lutheran Church, rural Elma, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Riceville; Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville, was in charge of arrangements; Mrs. Groth and her husband farmed south of Saratoga, retiring in 1963.

GRUNDY CENTER -- Mildred B. Geiter, 89, of Grundy Center, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital Long-Term Care Unit, Grundy Center, of natural causes; survivors include a daughter, Joan Ammerman of Grundy Center; two sons, Roger Hawley of Grundy Center and Dick Hawley of Harrisburg, Ore.; a stepson, Ralph Geiter of Grundy Center; nine grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and three great-great-granddaughters; and a brother, Lawrence Mills of Baxter; she was preceded in death by her husbands, George Hawley, on Nov. 1, 1969, and Elmer Geiter on Dec. 26, 1981; and two brothers, Orville and Arthur Mills; services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church, with burial in Rose Hill Cemetery, both in Grundy Center; friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home, Grundy Center, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m.; visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church; a memorial fund has been established.

VINTON -- James N. "Jim" Gavalas, 56, of Vinton, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of heart failure; survivors include his wife, Carolyn; a daughter, Stephanie Gavalas of Vinton; and a sister, Anna Sallee of Vinton; he was preceded in death by his parents, Nick and Helen Gavalas; and a brother, Conn; memorial services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home, Vinton; friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home, where there will be a 6 p.m. memorial service by Vinton Masonic Lodge No. 62 AF&AM; Mr. Gavalas graduated from DeVry Institute of Technology, Chicago, in 1964, and operated Nick's TV and Appliance, Vinton; he was past president of the Vinton Cable Commission and was past master of the Vinton Masonic Lodge 62 AF&AM; he was a veteran of the U.S. Naval Reserves, serving in Vietnam.

NEW HAMPTON -- Greg L. Haus, 88, of New Hampton, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at St. Joseph Community Hospital, New Hampton, of natural causes; survivors include his wife, Alice; a daughter, Margaret Tabor of West Des Moines; a son, Robert of West Des Moines; four granddaughters; and two sisters, Agnes Mishak of New Hampton and Mary Webber of Seattle; he was preceded in death by four brothers, Tony, Leo, Matt and Ed; and three sisters, Lena Pickar, Anna Papenheim and Rose Schreder; services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Congregational United Church of Christ, New Hampton, with burial in New Hampton Cemetery; friends may call after 4 p.m. today at Conway Funeral Home, New Hampton, where there will be a 7:30 p.m. Scripture service; visitation also for an hour before services Wednesday at the church; Mr. Haus attended the University of Wisconsin; he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, where he was an electronics instructor; he was a dairy farmer in the New Hampton area.

CRESCO -- Dorothy M. Baker, 82, of Cresco, died Monday, May 3, 1999, at Evans Memorial Home, Cresco, of natural causes; survivors include a son, Roger of Belvidere, Ill.; a daughter, Karen Knight of West Branch; four grandchildren, two stepgrandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles DeWalle of Cresco; she was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome, on Jan 11, 1994; two brothers, Lyola "Bud" and Urban; and two sisters, Agnes Gunhus and Margaret Novak; services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery, both in Cresco; friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Conway Funeral Home, Cresco, where there will be a 7:30 p.m Scripture service; visitation also for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
