CEDAR FALLS -- Daniel R. Sullivan, 85, of Cedar Falls, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Windsor Care Center of natural causes.
He was born Jan. 24, 1914, in Elma, son of Raymond and Margaret Biwer Sullivan. He married Wilma Eckerman on Aug. 1, 1945, in Lourdes.
Mr. Sullivan was employed at Winpower Manufacturing, Newton, as a foreman in the shipping and receiving department, retiring in 1978.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, John of Johnston and Dan Jr. of Iowa City; two daughters, Jan Lown of Downers Grove, Ill., and Mary Dostal of Cedar Rapids; nine grandchildren; and three sisters, Bonnie Gebel of Alta Vista, Jane Sullivan of Waterloo and Gerry Wengert of Granite Falls, Minn.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Leo.
Services: 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Cedar Falls, with burial in the Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Cemetery, Lourdes. Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Richardson Funeral Home, with family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and with a 3 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. Scripture service.

WATERLOO -- James M. "Jim" Maertz, 50, 2000, of Richfield, Minn., formerly of Waterloo, died Monday, Feb. 21, in Richfield of Parkinson's disease.
He was born March 5, 1949, in Redwing, Minn., son of Richard and Shirley Connor Maertz. He married Kathleen Jewell.
Mr. Maertz played hockey for the Waterloo Black Hawks during the 1971-72 season. He was currently employed in sales of dental accessories.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Parker at home; a daughter, Lauren Maertz at home; his mother, Shirley Kirsch; six brothers, Richard, David and Tom Maertz and Jeff, Michael and John Kirsch; and four sisters, Mary Shields, Jan Kirsch, Elizabeth Johnson and Peggy Kirsch.
Preceded in death by: his father; and stepfather, Eldor Kirsch.
Services: were Feb. 25, at Woodlake Lutheran Church, Richfield, with burial in Dawn Valley Cemetery, Bloomington, Minn.. Morris Nilsen Chapel, Richfield, was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the family for a fund to be established.

CEDAR FALLS -- Keith "Mac" McBroom, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, Feb. 26, 2000, at Karrington Cottages, Waterloo, of natural causes.
He was born June 21, 1910, in Hastings, Neb., son of Carl and Dora Dickson McBroom. He married Ruth Thornes on April 12, 1935, in Marshalltown.
Mr. McBroom was employed as manager of Piggley-Wiggley and then Eagles, both in Cedar Falls, and then Sun Mart, Waterloo, retiring in 1962.
Survived by: his wife; three daughters, Deanna Brennecke of Marshalltown, Dorothy Dillon of Cedar Falls and Darla Shropshire of Glenwood Springs, Colo.; and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: three brothers and a sister.
Private memorial services: will be Saturday, with inurnment in Rose Hill Memorial Garden, Marshalltown. There will be no visitation. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to American Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Research.

EVANSDALE -- Zane I. Hanlin, 64, of Evansdale, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Allen Hospital of natural causes.
He was born Feb. 24, 1936, in Waterloo, son of Alva O.F. and Velma Marie Hardee Hanlin. He married Lela Carter on June 5, 1953, in Waterloo.
Mr. Hanlin was employed by John Deere until his retirement.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Robin Eugene of Evansdale; two daughters, Penny Lee Hanlin and Wanda Jo Tucker, both of Waterloo; three grandchildren; and a sister, Lorene Whipple of El Paso, Texas.
Preceded in death by: an infant daughter, Kathie Marie Hanlin; and a brother, Donald Eugene.
Services: 2 p.m. Thursday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, both in Waterloo. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and for an hour before services Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

CEDAR FALLS -- Martha Elizabeth Hartke, 89, of Cedar Falls, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at the Cedar Falls Healthcare Center of natural causes.
She was born Aug. 13, 1910, in Axtell, Neb., daughter of Walter August and Iva Lela Merick Olson. She married Fred A. Hartke Sr. on March 20, 1930, in Cedar Falls. He died July 8, 1983.
Survived by: two sons, Fred A. Jr. of Waterloo and Frank of Cedar Rapids; two daughters, Betty Nelson of Lorton, Va., and Dorene Selleck of Cedar Falls; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; two half brothers, Ray Cannon of Cedar Falls and C.C. Canon Jr. of Winterset; and two half sisters, Rosiva O'Donnell of Council Bluffs and Evaline Shuster of Denver, Colo.
Preceded in death by: a son, Ralph; a half brother, Rhett Canon; and a half sister, Cloydine Anselme.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, with burial in Cedar Valley Memorial Garden. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today and for an hour before services Wednesday at the funeral home.

WATERLOO -- Dorothy Maxine Lemke, 80, of Waterloo, died Monday, Feb. 28, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center from complications of diabetes.
She was born May 27, 1919, in Seney, daughter of Harry and May Reeves Manning. She married LuVerne Henry Lemke on June 23, 1962, in Waverly.
Mrs. Lemke was employed at the Waterloo Register.
Survived by: her husband; a stepson, LuVerne Jr. of Roscoe, Ill.; two stepdaughters, Penny Myers of Maschesney Park, Ill., and Patricia Hahn of Vergas, Minn.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a brother, Milo Manning of LaMars; and a sister, Frances Vestal of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: a son, Stanley Davis.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Waterloo, with burial in Harlington Cemetery, Waverly. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care, and for an hour before services Thursday at the church.

JESUP -- Geraldine M. Powell-Teeple, 65, of Glendale, Ariz., formerly of Jesup, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000,in Arizona of natural causes.
She was born March 3, 1934, in Jesup, daughter of Leonard F. and Frances M. Kurtz. She married Steven S. Powell. He preceded her in death.
Mrs. Powell-Teeple was a licensed practical nurse and had formerly worked as an airline reservationist and teletypist.
Survived by: her mother, Frances M. Kurtz of Jesup; and a brother, Doyle J. Kurtz of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Richard M. Kurtz; and a sister, Connadene A. Haley.
Memorial services: 2 p.m. today at Camino Del Sol Funeral Chapel and Cremation Center, Sun City West, Ariz.
Memorials: may be directed to charity of donor's choice.

WATERLOO -- Gilbert Ralph Kent, 71, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Allen Hospital of cancer.
He was born July 30, 1928, in Manchester, son of Bernard C. and Marjorie "Haby" McGonegal Kent. He married Berniece Evelyn Stanford on Aug. 3, 1946.
Mr. Kent was employed by the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad, retiring in 1989. After retirement he worked for a while for Corporate Express. He was past Worshipful Master of Waterloo Lodge 105 and past Worthy Patron of Waterloo Chapter 128 of the Order of Eastern Star. He was awarded the State of Iowa Certificate of Valor in 1946 for saving the lives of two children from drowning in the Cedar River.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Tom of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Greg of Waterloo; two daughters, Karen Sullivan and Marcia Jacobs, both of Waterloo; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Kenneth of Cedar Falls.
Preceded in death by: a son, Richard; a granddaughter; and four brothers, Robert, Richard, James and Herold.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday at Grace Brethren Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on Ridgeway Avenue, with a 7 p.m. public Masonic service.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

WATERLOO -- Louis William Kuriger, 95, of 811 Reber Ave., died Monday, April 17, 2000, in Norman, Okla., of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 2, 1904, in Muscatine, son of Henry Frank and Lucy Rohrbach Kuriger. He married Margaret Aloisia Stefan on June 25, 1931, in Waterloo. She died Dec. 10, 1999.
Mr. Kuriger had been employed by Chamberlain Manufacturing Co. and then was a machinist for Construction Machinery Co., retiring in 1969. He was also a charter member of St. Edward Catholic Church and did janitorial work at the church and the school after his retirement.
Survived by: a son, Dr. William L. Kuriger of Norman; three daughters, Mary E. "Betsy" Bronson and Cecelia Deich, both of Waterloo, and Dorothy Wrage of Hudson; 20 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild; two brothers, Bernard of Monticello and Alfred of Savannah, Ga.; and a sister, Roseline Schwendinger of Monticello.
Preceded in death by: a grandson; five brothers, Ralph, Karl, Clarence, Norbert and Lawrence; and three sisters, Mildred Barry, Helen Kuriger and Genevieve Miller.
Services: were 11 a.m. today at St. Edward Catholic Church, with entombment in Mount Olivet Mausoleum. Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on South Street was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: may be directed to the church or to St. Vincent de Paul.

CEDAR FALLS -- Kathryn I. Peterson, 83, of Cedar Falls, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at Stone Hill Care Center, Dubuque, of natural causes.
She was born July 11, 1916, in Waterloo, daughter of Willard and Kathrine Noonan Gowans. She married Richard Peterson on Oct. 12, 1950, in Cedar Falls. He died in 1979.
Mrs. Peterson was a graduate of Mercy School of Nursing, Dubuque and was director of nursing at the Cedar Falls Western Home for five years.
Survived by: two sons, Paul R. of Mason City and Tim W. of Topeka, Kan.; two grandchildren; and three sisters, Mildred, Genevieve and Sister Marilyn Gowans, all of Dubuque.
Graveside inurnment services: will be directed by the family at 11 a.m. May 13 at Greenwood Cemetery. There will be no visitation; her body was cremated. Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial fund: will be established.

WATERLOO -- Fred R. Belthuis, 86, of Dysart, formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at home of natural causes.
He was born Dec. 10, 1913, in Stout, son of George and Amanda Conklin Belthuis. He married Mildred Marie Schallenberger on June 4, 1937, in Waterloo.
Mr. Belthuis was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was employed in the pickle cellar at Rath Packing Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1975.
Survived by: his wife; three sons, Neil L of Glendale, Ariz., Albert R. of Cedar Falls and John S. of Waterloo; a daughter, Becky J. Walters of Dysart; and eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Preceded in death by: a son, Gerald; four brothers, George, Albert, Roy and Austin; and an infant sister.
Services: 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, with burial in Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today and for an hour before services Wednesday at the chapel.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

WATERLOO -- Adam James Oberbroeckling, 2, of Carmel, Ind., formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at Covenant Medical Center of respiratory failure.
He was born March 3, 1998, in Indianapolis, Ind., son of Daniel J. and Carol B. Nelson Oberbroeckling.
Survived by: his parents of Carmel; two sisters, Amy and Erica, both at home; paternal grandparents, Bob and Lois Oberbroeckling of Waterloo; and maternal grandparents, the Rev. Benard and Evelyn Nelson of Fremont, Neb.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. vigil service.
Memorial services: Tuesday, May 2, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Carmel.

WATERLOO -- Robert "Buck" Grubb, 72, of Waterloo, died Saturday, April 22, 2000, at the Covenant Medical Center Skilled Nursing Unit after a lengthy illness.
He was born Oct. 8, 1927, in Princeton, Ind., son of Victor and Eunice McConnell Grubb. He married Jeananne Cromer on Sept. 23, 1951, in Philadelphia.
Mr. Grubb was a truck driver for Takin Brothers Moving and Storage, and Burch & Lehman Transfer for 30 years, retiring in 1987. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and the Korean War.
Survived by: his wife; two sons, Gerry and David, both of Des Moines; a daughter, Chris Swacker of Waterloo; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Jeanne Livingston of Clear Lake and Pat Rounds of Manchester.
Preceded in death by: two grandchildren; two sisters, Garnet Gregory and Joann Weber; and an infant brother.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Military rites will be conducted by Becker-Chapman American Legion Post 138 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1629. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Kearns, Huisman-Schumacher Chapel on Kimball, and for an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the roofing fund at the church.

EVANSDALE -- Jack E. Shinn, 83, of 226 Feldt Avenue, Evansdale, died Sunday, April 23, 2000, at his home of leukemia.
He was born September 3, 1916, in Mason City, son of Edward and Clara Ryan Shinn. He married Helen M. Roggemann September 8, 1936, in Mason City.
He was employed with McCoy Truck Lines and Briggs Transportation as a truck driver for 41 years, retiring in 1976.
Survivors include his wife; seven grandchildren, Richard and Laura Means of Redmond, Utah, Ronald and Samantha Means of Redmond, Utah, Vicki and Louis Perret of Leesburg, Virginia, Joshua and Gillian Lederman of Davenport, David and Amy Lederman of Waterloo, Jacob Lederman of Des Moines and Daniel Lederman of Council Bluffs; 12 great-grandchildren; and a stepbrother, Deloss Baker of Mason City.
He is preceded in death by three daughters, Clara Mae in infancy, Jacqueline Means in 1992 and Barbara Lederman in 1998; two brothers, Jim and Steven Shinn; a stepbrother, Dwight Baker; and a sister, Evelyn in infancy.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Friday at Park Cemetery in Nora Springs. Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service on West Ridgeway, where there will be a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Memorials may be made to Cedar Valley Hospice.
