Wayne T. LaPree
Wayne Thomas LaPree, 72, passed away at home January 5, 2004. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10 am, Friday, January 9 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with a reception following at the church hall.
Wayne was born November 25, 1931 in Saint Paul, MN, and had previously lived in Cedar Rapids, IA. He was part owner of Viking Window and a US Navy Veteran. He was a member of the YMCA, the Hinder Club, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and US Navy Ceremonial Guard Alumni Association. He received awards in handball, golf, and fast-pitch softball.
Wayne will be missed by his wife, Jane LaPree; sons, Bruce, Mark, and Todd, all of TX, and Christopher (Sheree) of CO; daughters, Dawn (Doug) Bailey of TX, Rene LaPree of Des Moines, and Lisa (Jim) Lewis of Johnston; brother, David LaPree of TX; sisters, Colleen LaPree and Dawn LaPree, of TX; sister-in-law, Marilyn LaPree and family of MN; 14 grandchildren; and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his mother Mabel and brother Martin.
Memorial Contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Shelley Sirfus
Shelley Sirfus, 40, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away at Mercy Medical Center on Thursday, April 29, 2004 at 1:45 p.m. Shelley is survived by her father, John Sirfus and sister, Deborah Rodgers. She was preceded in death by her mother, Sally Sirfus who passed away October 4, 2003. Shelley will be cremated after her organs are donated to help others. Interment will be at a later date. The intermenty for Shelley and her mother, Sally will take place at the same time.

Dixie Holder
Des Moines
Dixie Holder, 70, fought a long and courageous battle with emphysema, and died peacefully at Kavanagh on 56th Street on December 12, 2005. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. today at Tonini Chapel. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Dixie will be missed by two daughters, Robin (Mark) Morris of Vinton and Renee (Craig) Smith of Olin; a son, Jim Holder of Cedar Rapids; five grandchildren, Joshua and Jessica Asmussen, Dameon Holder, Eric (Kim) Smith and Jason (Michelle) Smith; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Hunter Smith; sisters, Virginia Quijano, Lois Birmingham, Diane Dickson, Joanne Malone and Joyce Ferin; and brother, Harry Davis. She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Wilbur and Pauline Davis and a sister, Barb Crane.
Memorials are suggested to Kavanagh House on 56th.

Twyla C. Gouak
Twyla C. Gouak, 82, died January 12, 2004 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Services will be 11 a.m., Wednesday, January 14 at Brooks Funeral Care – University Chapel. Graveside services will be 3 p.m. Wednesday at Maple Hill Cemetery in Gladbrook, Iowa
Twyla was born in Washington Township, Grundy County, Iowa and had lived in Rochester, MN before moving to Urbandale three years ago. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening.
Twyla will be missed by her daughters, Ellen (Dennis) Graham and Nancy (David) Lappin, both of Urbandale; grandchildren, Sarah Brooks of Ankeny, Michael Graham of Cedar Rapids, and Michael Lappin of Orlando, FL; great-grandchildren, Olivia and Alexandra Brooks; and sister, Eileen Rash of Aplington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie R. Gouak in 1967.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Carl Sorenson
Carl Sorenson, 92, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004. He will be missed by his daughter, Carol Sorenson. Private family services will take place at a later date.

Dale Abbas
Dale Lee Abbas, 67, died at home Saturday, September 18, 2004, the result of pancreatic cancer. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 25, 2004 at Brooks Funeral Care-University Chapel, 7975 University Blvd, followed by burial at Glendale Cemetery.
Dale was born September 5, 1937 to John Engle and Pauline Marie (DeVries) Abbas in Hampton, Iowa. He grew up in Latimer, graduating from Franklin Consolidated High School (now known as CAL Community). He enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Oklahoma, North Carolina and Okinawa. Following discharge he moved to Des Moines where he worked in the Computer Service Field until his health declined.
Dale was united in marriage to Martha Lorraine Brodrick in Des Moines, Iowa on October 20, 1957. To that union were born three children, Julie, Beth, Michael Dale and Jeffrey Alan.
Dale was a Lay Leader and Lay Minister in the United Methodist Church and taught Sunday School. He was a volunteer for the Cancer Society of Iowa, the National Kidney Foundation and Polk County Child Care Resource Center. He was an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous with more than 31 years of sobriety. He served A.A. in various service positions at the local, district, state and World Service levels. He loved traveling, fishing, reading, watching NASCAR and caring for his cats.
Dale was known for his kind, gentle and loving spirit. He often said, "I always liked that guy! (or gal)" That's also how most people viewed him.
Surviving are his wife, Martha; a daughter, Julie Long (Daniel) of Des Moines; two sons, Michael Abbas (Michelle) of Memphis, TN, and Jeffrey Abbas (Haruhi) of Iowa City; six granddaughters, Ilana Lorraine Dennis of Barstow, CA, Jessie Lee Dennis of Des Moines, Alyssa Michelle and Elise Marie Abbas of Memphis, TN, and Hayley Haruhi and Akane Olivia Abbas of Iowa City; and a great-granddaughter, Caitlyn Iris Wood of Barstow, CA. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward; a sister, Ruth Yakel; and a granddaughter, Kecia Marie Abbas.
Visitation will be held after 5 p.m. Friday with the family present from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Brooks Funeral Care-University Chapel. Memorials may be directed to Dale's family.

Evelyn Hayes
Evelyn Anna Hayes, 83, died September 24, 2004 of breast cancer at Ramsey Home. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, October 2 at Brooks Funeral Care-University Chapel, with burial at Resthaven Cemetery.
Evelyn was born in Chicago, IL, and had lived in Des Moines since 1947. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church. Evelyn enjoyed sewing, gardening and cooking.
She is survived by her son, David Hayes of Ankeny; daughter, Elaine Miller of Rhinelander, WI; and four grandchildren, Dylan Hayes, Jens Miller, Britt Miller-Witt and Erich Hayes. She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Owen Hayes and parents, Mads and Elsie Barbara (Capaul) Nielsen.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to her church or Ramsey Home.

Floyd Tiffany
Funeral services for Floyd Lynn Tiffany will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 10 at Union Park United Methodist Church. Visitation is from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Brooks Funeral Care-University Chapel.
Floyd served his country during the Korean War and enjoyed playing bridge and computer games. He is survived by two daughters, Patricia (Marvin) Morris and Cherie Tiffany; a son, Brian Tiffany; four grandchildren; sisters, Lorna (Leon) Wallace and Ivetta (Kenneth) Waddill; brother, Irving (Joan) Tiffany; and brother- in-law, Robert Moffit. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mildred Moffit and his parents, Harold and Dorothy Tiffany.

Glen Chiles
Glen M. Chiles, 84, died on Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Mercy Hospice in Johnston. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 5 at Brooks Funeral Care- Tonini Chapel in Des Moines. Interment will follow at Linn Grove Cemetery in Norwalk.
Glen was born in Prole, Iowa and had lived in Des Moines since 1969. He was the Head of Maintenance at Valley West Mall. Glen enjoyed woodworking and spending time with his close friend, Sadie Sioux, his dog.
Glen will be missed by his wife of 20 years, Janet K. Chiles; daughters, Janice Louise (Joe) Johnson of Bullshoal, AK, Sherry K. Hartman of Des Moines and Glenda R. Chiles of Indianola; sons, Robert M. Chiles of Des Moines, Jimmy L. (Marianna) Chiles of Norwalk, Jerry E. (LuAnn) Chiles of Des Moines and Richard W. (Barb) Chiles of Custer, SD; stepson, Darin Taylor of Des Moines; and half-sister, Verna May Fickes of Leon. He also leaves behind 22 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Glen was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia L. Chiles and daughter, Sandra S. Chiles.
Visitation for Glen will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Memorial contributions will be used according to the wishes of the family.

Elizabeth Cardaman
Elizabeth Cardaman died October 5, 2004 at the age of 99. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 10 AM Monday at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church.
A loving homemaker, Elizabeth is survived by 6 grandchildren and 2 greatgrandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Emilo, a daughter; Betty Lacava and a son; Tom.
Visiatation will take place 4 to 8 PM with family greeting friends 6 to 8 and a 7 PM Rosary Sunday at Brooks Funeral Care Tonini Chapel.

Glenda Arnold
Glenda Rose Arnold, 63, passed peacefully from this life Friday, September 3, 2004, in the comfort of her home and in the arms of her family, under the care of Mercy Hospice, after her year-and a-half battle with cancer. Her Home Going Celebration of Life will be Tuesday, September 7, at 4 p.m., with visitation from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Valley Church, 4343 Fuller Drive in West Des Moines.
Glenda was born January 29, 1941 in Walker, Missouri, to Orville and Evelyn Wallace. She was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her mother; her brother, Richard Wallace of Pleasant Hill, Missouri; her husband, Geoffrey Lynn Arnold of Clive, Iowa; her daughter, Leslie Couture of Des Moines, Iowa; her three sons, Jef Jr. of Austin, Texas; Jon of West Des Moines, Iowa; James of Toledo, Parana, Brasil; and twelve delightful grandchildren.
Glenda worked at and retired from the U.S. Postal Service, Second and University, Des Moines, Iowa where she worked as a Distribution Clerk. She was a member of the American Postal Workers Union, the Iowa Postal Workers Union, the Des Moines Chapter of the American Postal Workers Union, and the Des Moines Postal Workers Retirees. In her twenty-five years with the Postal Service, she made a multitude of friends.
As long as her strength was able, Glenda was active in her Adult Fellowship Class, the Pathfinders, at Valley Church in West Des Moines, where she touched the lives of many more dear friends.
Mrs. Arnold raised her family in various locations, including Joplin, Missouri; Oelwein, Iowa; Waco, Texas; Boone, Iowa; and in Des Moines, where she developed many more friends. She often took in "strays" -kids who needed help, helping her own children to develop an appreciation for her grace and hospitality. A superb cook, a gracious hostess, a meticulous housekeeper, and an avid lover of the joy of life, Glenda imparted all of these and more to her family.
We will miss her.
Flowers may be sent to Valley Church, 4343 Fuller Drive, West Des Moines. The family requests that any memorial contributions may be directed to Mercy Hospice.

Jane Morrow
Jane Ann Morrow, 64, died March 7, 2004 of a heart attack. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 11 at the United Methodist Church in Van Meter, with burial at the Van Meter Cemetery.
Jane was born in Ames and lived in West Des Moines before moving to Van Meter 13 years ago. She retired in 2001 as a secretary for Roto-Rooter and was a member of the United Methodist Church in Van Meter. Jane was an avid ISU fan and sports enthusiast and enjoyed family activities and singing in her church choir.
Jane will be missed by her loving companion, John Taylor; a son, Ric (Michelle) Morrow of Sebring, FL; daughters, Deb (Mike) Kelly of Springfield, IL and Lori (John) Kuhn of Marion; and grandchildren, Brian, David and Jacob Kuhn, Michael Taylor and Crystal Guinn; four step-grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lowell and Ruth Carver and brother, L. Craig Carver.
Visitation will take place form 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 10 at Brooks Funeral Care University Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to the Van Meter Emergency Medical Services or her church.

Gerald "Jerry" Hyatt
Mr. Hyatt died on April 15, 2004 of brain cancer at Kavanagh House on Grand. He will be missed by his daughter, Julie Ortega of Phoenix, AZ; grandsons, Ricardo and Anthony; and his brother, Don and wife JoAnn of West Des Moines, IA. He was preceded in death by his son, Buddy and his mother, Evelyn Hyatt. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa.

Harry Griffiths
Harry Griffiths, 74, died Saturday, July 24, 2004. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at Brooks Funeral Care-University Chapel.
Harry was born February 14, 1930 in Massillon, OH. He was a Nuclear Power Plant engineer for Bechtel Engineer and a Radon Specialist for The Building Inspectors as well as office manager. He enjoyed socializing, playing golf and clowns.
Harry will be missed by his son, Harry Griffiths, Jr. (Brenda) and their children, Elisa (Glenn) and Patrick Griffiths; daughter, Pamela Copeland (Frank) and their children, Jeannie and Justin; two great-grandchildren, Anita and Brittney; sister-in-law, Terri; and two longtime best friends, Chuck Wells and Lynn Green. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lucille Mabel; brother, Jack Griffiths; and his daughter, Jeannie.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Hospice of Central Iowa.
