Alice E. West, 63, of Bettendorf, Iowa, died Sunday, September 25, 2005 at her home. Funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Thursday, September 29, 2005 at St. John’s United Methodist Church, Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at Weerts Funeral Home. Burial will be at Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
She was born Alice Eleanor Carpenter on June 21, 1942, to Capt. and Mrs. Estel Clare Carpenter and Edith Mable (Lowe) Carpenter in Belpre, Ohio. Her parents preceded her in death as did her father- and mother-in-law, Paul H. and Cleo (Little) West of Jamestown, Ohio.
Alice is survived by her loving husband, Neil L. West, with whom she recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary, and her two devoted daughters-Susan Renate West Ray and her husband, Nigel Kent Ray, of Iowa City, Iowa and Sonja Rebecca West and her husband, Robert Matthew Fezekas, currently of Tuscaloosa, Alabama and formerly of Los Angeles, California.
She is also survived by her three brothers and their wives: Edward and Emma “Becky” (Beckwith) Carpenter, Scott and Rebecca (Mulligan) Carpenter, and Lowell and Nancy (Metz) Carpenter. In addition she is survived by ten nieces and nephews, eighteen great nieces and nephews and two step-great nieces all of whom she adored and who adored their Aunt Alice.
Alice and Neil moved from Ohio to the Quad-Cities in 1966 where they have lived happily ever since. Alice was active in her church, St. John’s United Methodist Church in Davenport, Iowa where she was a member of the Questors Class for 39 years. She was also active in the Quad-Cities chapter of the American Association of University Women, including serving as the group’s president, and attended AAUW’s national conference this past June as the Quad-Cities delegate. She further served on the board of directors of the Colonel Davenport Home on the Rock Island Arsenal.
A graduate of Ohio University with a degree in mathematics, Alice believed passionately in education and teaching. She taught junior high, high school and community college math students throughout her life and in recent years was a popular mathematics tutor. Alice was also one of the founders of the Quad-Cities Montessori pre-school in 1970.
Alice and Neil both love to travel and recently enjoyed trips to Australia, France, and China. She also loved to visit her daughters in the various locales their professions took them including Arizona, California, Michigan, Alabama, and Washington, D.C.
One of Alice’s main loves, however, was the water. She lived her entire life near the bank of a river and loved to visit the beach, to swim and to boat. For a birthday present she received her first boat, which she named “Alice’s Dream.” She followed in her father’s footsteps in supporting the preservation of river history.
Memorials would be appreciated to the National Rivers Hall of Fame, 350 E. 3rd Street; Ice Harbor; Dubuque, Iowa; 52001.

Jason DeJuan Tucker, Sr. 27, of Davenport, Iowa, departed this life on Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at Trinity Medical Center, West Campus, Rock Island, Illinois. Celebration of Life Services will be at 12:00 P.M. Monday, October 3, 2005 at Pentecostal Church, of God, 1234 Ripley St., Davenport. Visitation will be Sunday, October 2, 2005 from 2:00-8:00 P.M. at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. A memorial fund will be established for Jason's children.
Jason DeJuan Tucker was born July 29, 1978 in Davenport, Iowa the son of Charles E. and Linda K. (Shaw) Tucker, Sr.
Jason was the owner of Big Catz House of Chrome in Rock Island, Illinois. He loved life to the fullest with his family and friends and would do anything for anybody. He also enjoyed drag racing, tricking out his cars, car shows and bowling. His vehicles always had to be the best of the very best. He was the first African American to win at the 2003 50th Anniversary of World Series in Cordova, Illinois.
He leaves to mourn but celebrate his life, his parents, Charles E. and Linda (Shaw) Tucker, Sr.; his fiance of ten years, Annie Jackson of Davenport, Iowa, his daughter JaNaja Tucker and his son Jason Tucker, Jr. of Davenport, Iowa; sisters Tiyonda Carrathers of Davenport and Sheila Tucker of Springfield, Illinois; his brothers and sisters in law, John and Felicia Tucker, William and Toni Tucker and Charles and Darlene Tucker, Jr. all of Davenport; John Michael and Marjorie Tucker and Steven and Brenda Tucker of Springfield, Illinois; and a host of nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Joshua Tucker and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Shaw, and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Tucker, three aunts and an uncle.

WILLIAM A. MEYER

William (Bill) A. Meyer, Jr., 78, of Davenport, Iowa, died at his home October 1, 2005 after a long and courageous battle with cancer. At his request, Mr. Meyer's body was donated to the University of Iowa. A celebration of Life Memorial Mass will be held at 6:00 P.M., Thursday, October 6th at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church, 4105 North Division, Davenport. The family will greet friends 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM Thursday at the church. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois, at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society's Road to Recovery Program or to Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Bill was born February 18, 1927 in Burlington, Iowa to William A. Sr. and Helen (Riley) Meyer, and graduated from St. Paul Catholic High School in 1944. He served with the U.S. Army during WW II, seeing action in the Pacific Theatre. He married Ruth Roberts in 1951. In 1972 he married Helen Parrish.
Bill lived in Burlington and was employed by Riley Bros. Oil Company for 30 years, then moved to Davenport in 1973 and worked for Illinois Oil Company in Rock Island. He later worked for Johnson Manufacturing in Princeton, Iowa, from which he retired in 1992.
While in Burlington, Bill spent ten years working with the youth as the Boy Scout Leader for St. Paul School Troop 68, and during his tenure as Troop Leader was given the Pilot Award for Leadership. Although he was a past member of the Davenport Chord Busters Barbershop Chorus, and a member of the Davenport Moose Lodge, having played on their Pool League for several years, Bill spent the most of his retirement years giving back to the community through his commitment to volunteer work, and received the Governor's Volunteer Award from Iowa Governor Terry Branstad. He was a board member of the Area Agency on Aging, volunteered at the Putnam Museum, and for the Quad City Harvest Program. Bill was a lung cancer survivor from 1977 and spent much of his time driving for the Road to Recovery Program taking others who were fighting their own battles to doctor appointments, radiation and chemotherapy treatments. He also found time to give to CASI and was honored with the Navigator Award in 2001 for his volunteer work. Bill was a board member of RSVP, and gave his time to RSVP singing and playing the bells at area nursing homes; delivering Meals on Wheels, and volunteering for the Good Samaritan Nursing Center. He volunteered with the Life Line program through Genesis Medical Center, was Eucharistic Minister for Our Lady of Victory Church, and administered communion at Genesis West Medical Center.
Bill and his wife Helen traveled and were avid campers. Bill was a true music lover and enjoyed gospel music, musicals and especially Dixieland jazz; he and his wife did not miss a BIX celebration in the last 32 years.
Survivors include his wife, Helen "Babe"; daughter, Sara Meyer (Pat Chapinski) of Rock Island; son, John (Sandy) Parrish of Cedar Rapids; sisters, Ann (Daniel) Dohrn of Henderson, Nevada, Cay (Mel) Delang of Burlington, Iowa, and Susan Moore of Bettendorf; seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Jim and Tom, and his companion Rex, The Wonder Dog. Bill believed, "Death is not extinguishing the candle, it is putting out the light because the down has come."

Elizabeth "Betty" Lindsley, 88, of Davenport, Iowa, died Thursday, October 20, 2005 at Iowa Masonic Health Facilities, Bettendorf, following a brief illness. Celebration of Life services will be held 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 24th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. The family will greet visitors 9:00 A.M. until 10:00 A.M. Monday at the funeral home. Betty was born November 7, 1916 in Davenport, the daughter of John and Mamie (Goetsch) Stutz. She married Louis H. Lindsley March 1, 1947 in Clinton, Iowa. Betty graduated from Davenport High School in 1935 and attended Brown's Business College.
Through her life she lived and worked in Davenport, Chicago, Oak Park, Illinois, Des Moines and West Des Moines. For the past four years, she resided with her sister, Helen Gosma Brisbin, in Davenport. Her employment included secretarial work at White-Phillips Co., Chicago Ordinance District and General Motors. In 1947, she retired to become a loving, devoted homemaker with her husband, Louis, who died in 1987. Betty was a Past Queen and a Life Member of the Daughters of the Nile, Des Moines and Davenport.
Survivors include her sister, Helen Gosma Brisbin of Davenport; nephews and nieces, John (Heather) Gosma of Davenport, James (Debbie) Gosma of Palm Coast, Florida, Jane (John) Reitz of Davenport, Julie (James) Irish of Moline, and Holly (Gary) Anhalt of Cedar Rapids; several great nieces and nephews; a great-great nephew and a great-great niece.

Mr. Studer was born May 15, 1929 in Shelbina, Missouri to Albert V. and Hazel (Barzee) Studer. He married Frankie J. Harter October 29, 1955 in Davenport. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict.
He worked 30 years in the foil mill of ALCOA, Riverdale, Iowa, retiring in 1983. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening and farming.
Survivors include his wife, Frankie of Blue Grass, Iowa; daughter, Elizabeth Jewel Pipper of Des Moines; son, Dale E. Studer of Davenport; granddaughter, Amanda Jo Gomez and her fiancé, Jonathan of Des Moines, Iowa; grandson, Douglas R. Studer of Davenport; great-granddaughter, Cordila Faye Gomez Chapman of Des Moines; sisters, Lavern Studer-Swanson of Davenport, and Laura Jean Studer of Missouri; brothers, Merel Studer and LeRoy Studer, both of Shelbyville, Missouri, and James Studer of Iowa. He was preceded in death by two granddaughters and a grandson.

Wayne M. Waetke, 78, of rural Davenport, died Saturday, September 24, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center – East Campus in Davenport. Celebration of Life Services will be 10AM Wednesday, September 28, 2005 at Faith Lutheran Church in Eldridge. Visitation will be from 4-8PM Tuesday, September 27, 2005 at Weerts Funeral Home. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park in Davenport. Family would welcome memorials to Faith Lutheran Church.
Wayne was born December 16, 1926, to Herbert and Cinderella (Groenwoldt) Waetke in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated from Davenport High School and served in the Army. Wayne farmed all his life in Scott County. He married Jean Stutt on September 6, 1950 in Davenport, Iowa. She died March 17, 2000.
Organizations include a 50-year membership in Knights of Pythias, Faith Lutheran Church, Iowa Farm Business Association, secretary of Scott County Farm Bureau, co-chairman of A.S.C. County Committee, president of Scott County Pork Producers, member of Scott County Corn Growers and Soybean Association, leader of 4H Lincoln Leaders. He was elected and served for many years as Lincoln Township clerk and enjoyed delivering meals.
He also enjoyed playing cards with the card club he belonged to for over 50 years.
Survivors include, daughter and son-in-law Julie Waetke-Bishoff and Murray Bishoff of Pierce City, MO; sons and daughter-in-law Rev. Craig and Julie Waetke of Edgewater Park, NJ and Kevin Waetke of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren Jessica, Jennifer, Mason and Carlyn; brother Arden Waetke of Davenport; nieces and nephews.
Along with his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Alvin and Eldon.

HAROLYN M. PECONGE

Saturday, October 8th at All Saints Lutheran Church, ELCA, 5002 Jersey Ridge Road, Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7:00 P.M. Friday at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, and 11:30 A.M.- 12:30 P.M. Saturday at the church, where the casket will be open prior to the service. Burial will be Monday, October 10th in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park, Toledo, Ohio. Mrs. Peconge was born April 9, 1937 in Fremont, Ohio to Harold and Rosalyn (Stiger) Crosskill. She married Robert L. Peconge August 24, 1968 in Fremont. He died in 1984. She was a public school teacher in Ohio, adjunct professor at Bowling Green State University, and most recently taught English as a second language at Scott Community College, Bettendorf, totaling 46 years in her teaching profession. She was a member of All Saints Lutheran Church; served in the Southeastern Iowa Synod of the ELCA; a Befriender with Genesis Medical Center, Davenport; and a volunteer at the Ronald McDonald House in Ohio.
Mrs. Peconge also enjoyed traveling, reading, cooking, theatre and music.
Survivors include her daughter, The Rev. Brenda Peconge and her husband, Brian Middleswarth of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Donald D. Huffman, 88, of Ridgecrest Village, Davenport, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport. Celebration of Life Memorial services will be held 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 8th at Koning Chapel, Ridgecrest Village, 4130 Northwest Blvd., Davenport. Burial will be in the National Cemetery, Rock Island, Illinois. Memorials would be appreciated to the Ridgecrest Charitable Fund.
Mr. Huffman was born August 19, 1917 in Maquoketa, Iowa to Chester L. and Cena (Hertensen) Huffman. He married Emily H. "Dessah" Nicolaisen September 13, 1953 in Clinton, Iowa. He served with the U.S. Army from May 1941 to January 1946, during WW II, obtaining the rank of Captain. Mr. Huffman was vice president and general manager of Republic Electric, where he was employed for 31 years, starting as an outside salesman with the company. He was a member of Edwards Congregational, UCC, Davenport; and Camanche (Iowa) Masonic Lodge #60 of which he was a 50 year member.
Survivors include his wife, Emily "Dessah"; daughter, Priscilla (J.B.) Cronkleton of Davenport; son, Richard (Kim) Huffman of Dunlap (Peoria), Illinois; five grandchildren; and brother, Robert E. Huffman of Clinton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by a brother, Chester Huffman, Jr.

Warren J. Wallace, 80, of Bettendorf, Iowa died Monday, September 26, 2005 at Bettendorf Health Care Center, Bettendorf, Iowa. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, September 29, 2005 at Grandview Baptist Church, Davenport. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 28, 2005 from 4:00 P.M. until 7:000 P.M. at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park, Davenport. Memorials may be made to American Diabetes Association and Miracles Can Happen Boys Ranch.
Mr. Wallace was born November 12, 1924 in Davenport, Iowa to Fred Ralston Wallace and Mary Ellen (Fletcher) Wallace. He married Esther Hintermeister in 1948 and she died in 1957. He later married Frances Wachlin in 1958 and she died in 1966. He married Dorothy E. Gallupe on January 2, 1970 in Moline, Illinois
He retired in 1981 as owner and operator of Wallace’s Garden Center in Bettendorf for thirty years. He formerly had been employed by Alcoa for twenty-two years. He was a member of Grandview Baptist of which he was a Trustee in recent years and assisted with offering. He enjoyed gardening and farming.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy of Davenport; daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Kathleen Wallace of Beaver Creek, Oregon, Deborah and Lyle Hodge of Duncanville, Texas, and Joyce and Dan Beckmann of LeClaire, Iowa, two sons, Timothy Wallace of LeClaire, Iowa and Donald Wallace of Bettendorf, Iowa; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a sister Ruthetta Wilson of Davenport, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Neva Emerson and Edna Mae Harris

Paul R. Curtis. Sr., 81, of Bettendorf, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport. Graveside services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, October 10th at Roselawn Cemetery, Pueblo, Colorado. Visitation locally will be held 4-8:00 P.M. Friday, October 7th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, and 2-5:00 P.M. Sunday at Roselawn Funeral Home, Pueblo. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Curtis was born December 9, 1923 in Kooskia, Idaho to Edward and Loretta (Gunther) Curtis. He married Rose Mendicello April 10, 1948 in Pueblo, Colorado. She died April 8, 1997. He then married Angie Farber, December 26, 1997 in Davenport. He served with the U.S. Army during WW II as a medic in the Pacific. He was Logistics Manager for the Department of the Army at Pueblo Army Depot, Rock Island Arsenal and White Sands Missile Range, New Mexico, from where he retired in 1979. He loved sports, coaching his sons in little league, and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Angie; children, Connie Curtis (David Breece) of Pueblo West, Colorado, Chuck (Cammy) Curtis of Wheaton, Illinois, Fran (Sal) Santos of Pueblo West, Colorado, Bob (Pat) Curtis of Blue Grass, Iowa, and Paul Curtis, Jr. (fiancé, Wendy Draper) of Tampa, Florida; grandchildren, Bryan, Shandi, Jarradin, Colter, Nick, Katie, Monica, Christy, and Jack; and sisters, Esther Cash and Viola George, both of Grangeville, Idaho. In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers.

Esther Irene (Keeney) Beaver, 89, a resident of Silvercrest Garner Assisted Living went to be with her Lord Tuesday, October 4, 2005. Formerly she lived in University Park and Eldridge, Iowa. Celebration of her life with be 10:00 A.M. Saturday, October 8th at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. The family will greet friends 9-10:00 A.M. Saturday at the funeral home. Graveside services will be 11:30 A.M. Monday in Oxford Cemetery, Chariton, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family toward a fund to be established in Irene's name.
E. Irene Hancock was born May 3, 1916 in Lucas County, Iowa to William P. and Laura O. Hancock. She formerly was married to Rev. Harold L. Keeney and later to Rev. Paul D. Beaver, pastors of the First Church of the Nazarene. In her early years, she taught elementary school in Marion and Scott Counties. She taught Sunday school and played the piano and organ as a ministry in the various churches her husbands pastored. Recently, she entertained fellow residents at Silvercrest with her piano playing.
Survivors include her son, Howard (Leilana) Keeney of Eldridge, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Barbara Keeney of Boise, Idaho; a step-son, Dale (Julie) Beaver of Olathe, Kansas; step-daughters, Jeanine (Tony) Caponigro of Ankeny, Iowa and Coleen (Terry) Pool of Olathe, Kansas; sister, Lorene (LaVon) Keeney of Gladstone, Oregon; six grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, two brothers, a step-brother, her husbands, and a son, Vernon G. Keeney. She will be greatly missed by those who knew her and loved her.

June 29, 1981 - October 17, 2005

Erin R. Baker, 24, of Davenport, Iowa, died Monday, October 17, 2005 at Genesis West Medical Center, Davenport, Iowa. Celebration of Life services will be held 1:00 P.M. Friday, October 21st at Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport. The family will greet friends from 11:00 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport, Iowa. Memorials may be made to the family.
Erin was born June 29, 1981 in Davenport, Iowa to Gene Baker and Sheryl Walkup. She enjoyed writing and puzzles. She had a great sense of humor and had fun playing practical jokes. She fought her illness courageously since age 15 with the help of her loving family.
Survivors include her parents, Sheryl Walkup and Gene Baker of Davenport, Iowa, her sisters, Alexia Knight of Germantown, Maryland, Lynsi Brown of Des Moines, Iowa, Yvette Green, Houston, Texas, Angela Hansen, Rock Island, Illinois and Brianna Brown, Boston, Massachusetts; brothers, Jason Baker, Davenport, Iowa and Harold Clay, Des Moines, Iowa; aunts, Joy Calloway, Roselle, Illinois, Sheila Renee Jones, Quincy, Illinois, and Shelia McKinley, Memphis, Tennessee and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents James and Gertrude Walkup and Eugene and Victoria Baker.

Sydney Mae Nimke, infant daughter of Kevin and Debra (Wilkins) Nimke, Davenport, died Friday, October 21, 2005 at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. Services will be conducted at a later date. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is assisting the family with arrangements.
Sydney was born October 21, 2005, at Genesis Medical Center-East Campus, Davenport. She is survived by her parents; a brother, Grant, at home; maternal grandparents, Dennis and Kathy Wilkins, of West Point, Iowa; paternal grandparents, Martin and Sandy Nimke, of Manson, Iowa; and great-grandparents and other family members. She was preceded in death by a sister in infancy, Grace Lynn.
