Anna "Hermina" Wood, 90, of Clear Lake, passed away Thursday, Feb, 10, 2005, at the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Ed Bard officiating. Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery at a date yet to be determined.
Those planning memorials or an expression of sympathy may direct them to Hospice of North Iowa, 232 Second Street Southeast, Mason City, Iowa 50401, or to a charity of one's choice in her memory.
Hermina was born April 7, 1914, on a farm near Alden, Iowa, the daughter of Herman Steinmeyer and (Anna) Catherine Geis. She graduated from Hayword High School, Hayward, Wis. in 1930. After graduating from high school she completed all of the requirements for her teacher's certification. She then taught students in first through eighth grades at the Round Lake, Wis. school for five years.
Hermina married Ed J. Wood on June 15, 1937, in Clear Lake. They lived and worked in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin before returning to Ventura and Meservey, Iowa area to farm in 1947. They moved to Clear Lake in 1981.
Hermina frequently talked about the satisfaction and joy of teaching as a young woman during the depression years. She was especially proud of the fact that nearly all of her children, as well as many of her grandchildren, continued their education and/or graduated from college. Hermina enjoyed her family, flowers, music, dancing, playing the piano, crossword puzzles, and crocheting.
Hermina is survived by seven children, Gary and Bettie Wood, Inez, Texas, Karen and Charles Tubesing, Chesterland, Ohio, Steve and Sharon (Thompson) Wood, Norfolk, Va., Ken and Carol (Meints) Wood, Columbia, Md., Byron and Marlys (Eilertson) Wood, Clear Lake, Greg Wood, Carrolton, Texas and Roger Wood, Los Angeles, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Hermina was preceded in death by her husband, Ed, in 1998; her parents; her brother, Lester; and sister, Esther Lois, who died at birth.

Hugh T. Varty, 80, died Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2005 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. A funeral service was held Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with Lay Assistant Richard Scott officiating. Military Honors were provided following the funeral service by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Interment was held at the Marion Cemetery, Gunder, Iowa Saturday afternoon with the Rev. Marshall Hahn officiating. Memorials may be given to the Hugh Varty Memorial Fund.
Hugh Taylor Varty was born on March 19, 1924 in Nampa, Idaho, son of Joseph and Ione (Taylor) Varty. He was educated in the Antelope Valley Schools at Lancaster, Calif. After high school he joined the Coast Guard and spent service time at Catalina Island and Long Island, New York. He transferred to Navy Air Corps and took his training in Kansas, Iowa, and Texas. He was on the boxing team, the rowing team, and the swimming team. He was discharged in 1946 and married Dolores McNally, June 19, 1946 in the Marion Lutheran Church, Gunder, Iowa. He worked for Standard Oil of California at Taft, California and for Allen Motor Co. in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He was in car sales and service management in Minneapolis, Minn. He accepted a position with Stewart Lumber Company in Minneapolis and sold commercial and farm buildings. Hugh moved to Clear Lake in 1961, and after a few years he began work at Woodford Wheeler in the same capacity. Later he got a franchise to build Wausau Homes and built over 100 homes in the surrounding area. During the recession of the 1980's he worked again for Woodford Wheeler as an estimator until his retirement in 1997.
He had a gift for anything mechanical and in construction. His hobbies were flying, geology, mineralogy, and he loved prospecting out West in the mountains. He was also an avid reader of the descriptive stories of the old West.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores (Mickie) Varty; son, William Varty; daughter, Dion Varty, and granddaughter, Miranda Varty, all of Clear Lake; one sister, Bernice Jaqua of North Carolina; one brother, Pat Varty (Bonnie) of Lompoc, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Mary Blatti, Lucille Cochran, Wanda McNally, Shirley Nyland (Don), Virginia Rude (Bob), Betty Searls, Pat Smith, and Sandy Cutler (John); brother-in-law, Ron McNally and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; many brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur Laurence Lenning, 81, passed away on Feb. 15, 2005 in Vallejo, Calif. after a long illness. Art was born in Clear Lake on June 14, 1923 (Flag Day), and said that "the flags were flying for him!" He was the youngest of 12 children born to Norwegian parents who immigrated to the Midwest to farm. His mother, Elizabeth Kittleson's parents immigrated from Oslo, Norway, while his father, Knute Lenning was naturalized as a proud American in 1906.
He was the dearly beloved husband of Marjorie Lucille who he married on June 5, 1948, and the proud father of five children, Diane Kay, Susan Marie, Bruce Allen, Julie Ann (predeceased), and Charles Dennis. Art and Marge began their married life in Clear Lake, Iowa where Art worked at the Great Lakes Pipeline for over 10 years before he began his life-long career of home construction. They have lived in the American Canyon, California area of the Napa Valley for 41 years. He loved his wife of 56 years with uncommon devotion, and they rarely spent any time away from each other.
Art was one of the "greatest generation" members who served his country proudly in the Navy during WWII. He was a Chief Petty Officer aboard the USS Washington serving in the Pacific between 1942-1945. After his honorable discharge he returned home to Clear Lake and obtained his private pilot's license through the GI Bill. He was an avid fisherman who taught all of his children and most of his grandchildren the intricacies of fishing. He loved to play the accordion, especially the "Beer Barrel Polka." He taught his daughters how to jitterbug dance, and the boys how to build a house. He was a member of the Moose Lodge for over 25 years. An avid sports enthusiast, Art believed every year that the Oakland A's and the San Francisco 49ers were going to win every game and go to the championship final game!
Art is survived by his wife, Marjorie Lucille, of American Canyon; his daughter, Diane Kay Ives of Seattle, Wash., his daughter, Susan Marie Winslow of Montgomery, Texas, his son, Bruce Allen Lenning of Napa, Calif., and his son, Charles Dennis Lenning also of Napa. His grandchildren include Jamie Stefani, Jessie Ives, and Shauna Ives all from the Seattle, Wash. area; Gabe Winslow and Matt Winslow from the Montgomery, Texas area; Curt Brandt, Troy Lenning, Allison Lenning, and Jake Lenning of Napa, and Ciera Lenning of Napa. Art's great-grandchildren include Anna and Grace Stefani, Jasmine Sites, and Avry Brandt. His sister, Minnie Findlay, still resides in Mason City, Iowa. In addition, he has numerous nieces and nephews who sill reside in the greater Clear Lake area with their families.
A memorial service was held at the Napa Valley Evangelical Free Church in Napa, Calif., on Saturday, Feb. 19. Those wishing to contact Marge Lenning can do so by writing to her at 231 Los Altos, American Canyon, CA 94503.

Leonard Edward Huff, 63, Hampton, Iowa died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005 at his home. Services were held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa. Interment was in Ventura Cemetery, Ventura, Iowa. Military honors were by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Family suggests memorials to Leonard Edward Huff Memorial fund.
Leonard was born Dec. 3, 1941 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Leonard Leroy and Eunice Maxine (Rafferty) Huff. He grew up in the Sheffield area. Following school he entered the United States Army and served in Germany.
After the service he traveled the United States and worked at various jobs. The last couple of years he has lived in Hampton and worked at Godfathers Pizza.
Leonard enjoyed spending time with his friends at Pit Row and being with his family.
He is survived by his daughter Theresa Froelich, Landfall Village, Minn. and one son, Brian Huff, Roseville, Minn,; five grandchildren, Chris and Ryan Froelich, Alex and Molly Jovanovich and Jacqueline Huff; three brothers, Lew Huff, Dumont, Iowa, Harry Wickering Mason City, and Gary Wickering, Marshalltown, Iowa and one sister, Georgia Ashland, Clear Lake; aunts and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Huff and mother, Eunice Kaster.

Inez M. Hubbard, 90, Mason City, Iowa died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at the Muse-Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City.
A funeral mass was held Friday, Feb. 25, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mason City, with the Rev. Michael J. Podhajsky officiating. Burial was in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.
The family of Inez M. Hubbard has requested that memorial contributions be made to the music department at the Newman Catholic High School in her memory.
Inez M. Hubbard was born on Sept. 20, 1914, in Missouri, the daughter of Henry and Gladys (Spath) Klocke. She graduated from Sioux Falls, S.D. High School. She was united in marriage to Robert Hubbard on Oct. 7, 1939, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mason City. He preceded her in death on Jan. 26, 1999. Inez was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother, and also worked as a seamstress for The Side Door in Mason City.
She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking, but her great love and enjoyment was her family, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren
She was a long standing member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Bob Hubbard and his wife, Ria, of Mason City, and Karen Werle of Mason City; four grandchildren, Julie Udelhofen and her husband, Jim, Lisa Easley and her husband, Dan, Kris Wolf and her husband, Jim, and Andy Hubbard and his wife, Cheryl, all of Mason City; 10 great-grandchildren, Amy Helgeland and her husband, Jess, Maggie and Rocky Moyer, Lucas, Emily and Nicholas Udelhofen, Serena and Blake Easley, and Amara and Jacob Wolf; three great-great-grandchildren, Makenna Anderson and Noah and Abigayle Helgeland; a brother, Gene Sherman and his wife, Betty, of Clear Lake; two brothers-in-law, Duane Jewell of Mason City, and Andrew Hubbard and his wife, Rose, of Chicago, Ill.; several nieces and nephews as well as other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert; her parents and two sisters, Alta Bourrie and JoAnn Jewell.

Robert Callanan, 84, 401 W. 10th Ave N., Clear Lake, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2005 at Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. A funeral service was held Friday, Feb. 25, at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating. Interment was held at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Military Rites were provided by the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Memorials may be given to the Robert Callanan Memorial Fund for the family to give to Hospice of North Iowa, Zion Lutheran Church, The V.F.W. and the Boy Scouts Troop # 75.
Bob was born Oct. 29, 1920 in Ventura, Iowa, the son of Everett L. and Florence A. (Avise) Callanan. He attended schools in Ventura and Clear Lake, graduating from Clear Lake High School in 1938 and Hamilton Business College in 1939. Bob married Evelyn M. Kittleson Oct. 27, 1940 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Mason City. He started working for Interstate Power before entering the Army. Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army on Aug. 13, 1943 and was Honorably Discharged in 1946. He served in WWII. Following the service Bob came back to Clear Lake and went back to work for Interstate Power. He retired in 1982 after working for them for 43 years. Bob was active in the Gas and Electric Credit Union for over 30 years and also was league director for three years. He was involved with the Boy Scouts for 38 years and was honored with the District Merit's highest award and also the Silver Beaver Council Award. Bob was inducted into the Hall of Fame of Hamilton Business College.
Bob enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, watching sports on T.V., camping and fishing. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, the Masonic Benevolence Lodge No. 145AF&AM, Mason City and the Clear Lake V.F.W.
Bob is survived by his wife, Evelyn Callanan, Clear Lake; daughter, Patricia Knutson and her husband, Dr. Eric, Corvallis, Or.; two sons, Dennis Callanan and his wife, Vivian, Park Ridge, Ill. and Dr. David Callanan and his wife, Kim, Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren, Kelly Wade, Fresno, Calif., Jay Bergmann and his wife, Christina, Corvallis, and Patrick Callanan, Arlington; one great-grandson, Sean Bergmann; and one sister, Leona Currier, Ventura.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Raymond.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.

Arthur H. Hoeft, 98, of Garner, Iowa died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005 at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, east of Garner with the Rev. Carl Hedberg officiating. Music was provided by organist, Louise Boehnke, who accompanied congregational hymns. Ushers were Glenn Thada, Gene Toppin and Harold Pueggel. Honorary bearers were Clarke Pollock, Dan O'Keefe, Harold Hall, Victor Knudtson, Henry Bokelman and Lawrence Miller. Pall bearers were Tim Hossler, the Rev. Glenn Niemann, John Bokelman, Kevin Schultz, Rahn Brager and Donald Knudtson. Burial was in the church cemetery. Cataldo Funeral Home in Garner was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be directed to St. John's Lutheran Church, Hospice of North Iowa or the Ventura Senior Citizens.
Arthur Herman Hoeft, the son of Herman and Martha (Reinhardt) Hoeft, was born Feb. 8, 1907 at Fort Dodge, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church east of Garner. He attended St. John's Parochial School. Following his schooling he worked for various farmers in the Garner and Ventura area. On Feb. 27, 1934 he married Verona Anne Schultz at her parent's home near Forest City, Iowa. They farmed in the Ventura, Garner and Clear Lake area. In 1957, they purchased their own farm and in 1966 moved to the home farm. After Verona passed away in 1986 he continued to live on the farm. In 1995, he moved to Prairie View Apartments in Garner. Art and Verona were active in community card clubs and fund raising for the local community chest drive.
He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church where he was a deacon, Walther League and the Ventura Senior Citizens.
He is survived by two children, Darwin (Jerrilee) Hoeft of Custer, S.D. and Carolyn (Larry) Shadle of Carthage, Mo.; grandchildren, Ann (Tim) Hossler of Beverly Hills, Mich., and Laura (the Rev. Glenn) Niemann of Pekin, Ill.; step-grandchildren, Patty (Marty) Allen of Gresham, Or., Jerrilee (Paul) Sever of Salmon, Idaho, Renee (Tom) Dickson of Post Falls, Idaho, Dave (Jenny) Squire of Houlton, Wis. and Bob (Kathy) Squire of Peru, N.Y.; three great-granddaughters; eight step-great-granddaughters; a step-great-grandson; two sisters-in-law, Irma (Henry) Bokelman of Ventura and Lucille Schultz of Mason City and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Verona, on Mar. 23, 1986; his parents; a brother, Lester Hoeft; a sister, Edna Knopf; and a step-great-grandson, Mark Sever.

Kelmer "Kelly" Sorenson, 96, of rural Hanlontown, Iowa died Tuesday, March 1, 2005 at Muse-Norris Hospice of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services were held Friday, March 4, at Grace Lutheran Church in Hanlontown with the Rev. Linda Johnson-Prestholt and the Rev. Kris Snyder officiating. Interment will be in Brush Point Cemetery in rural Hanlontown. Memorials may be given to the Citizens Savings Bank Museum, Hanlontown.
Kelly was born Aug. 3, 1908 at the family home in rural Hanlontown, the son of Austin and Alice (Brattrud) Sorenson. He lived his entire life in the house in which he was born. He married Evelyn Gooden on Aug. 14, 1937 in Kensett, Iowa. Kelly farmed his entire life. He enjoyed fixing up old machinery and sharing stories from his past. He was baptized, confirmed and remained a life-long member of Grace Lutheran Church.
Kelmer is survived by his children, Deloris Downs and husband, Dan, of Lake Havasu City, Az., Lynn Sorenson and his wife, Cindy, of rural Hanlontown; five grandchildren, Stacey Lunsford and her husband, Victor, of Whitewater, Wis., Joel Lemmerman and his wife, Leah, of North Branch, Minn., Jamie Sorenson and his wife, Angie, of Hanlontown, Michelle Gobrecht and her husband, Duane, of St. Paul Park, Minn., Christina Sorenson of Decorah, Iowa and nine great-grandchildren.
Kelmer was preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn, in 2001; his parents; two brothers; two sisters and one adopted sister.

Carl Joseph Mealy of Mason City, Iowa died on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at Muse Norris Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral Services were held Saturday, March 5, at Holy Family Church in Mason City with burial at Elmwood Cemetery. Military honors were by the Mason City Veterans Memorial Association.
Carl Joseph Mealy was born in Elma, Iowa on June 10, 1925, the son of Robert Aldon and Terrance Marie (Cannon) Mealy. Carl's early years were spent in Elma. His family moved to Mason City where he graduated from Holy Family High School in 1943. From 1943 to 1945, Carl served in U.S. Army in active duty with the infantry in Italy then as a clerk at the prisoner of war camp in Greeley, Colorado. During his service to his country, he was awarded several medals, including the Bronze Star.
Following the service, he attended the University of Northern Iowa. In 1949, he graduated with a BA in business and physical education. Carl was a teacher and a coach in Lehigh, Iowa from 1949 - 1950.
On June 5, 1950, Carl married Alice Norton at St Mary's Catholic Church in Wilton, Iowa.
The couple found teaching jobs together in Elwood, Iowa where Carl was a principal, teacher and a coach until 1953. During the summers, Carl attended Colorado State College of Education in Greeley, Colorado graduating with a MA in education administration in 1953.
Carl took a position in Nichols, Iowa as the Superintendent of Schools from 1953 to 1958. In 1958, he became the principal of the high school at Horicon, Wis. The family moved to Mason City in 1967, where Carl served as an administrator in the Mason City Schools until his retirement in 1985. Carl served as principal at Harding, Garfield, Washington and Roosevelt Elementary Schools.
While in Nichols, Carl joined the Army Reserve service, ending his 30 year military career attached to a Civil Affairs unit in Green Bay, Wis. In addition, from 1972 to 1978, he was selected to serve as a liaison officer for the West Point Academy. Carl retired from the Army as LT Colonel.
In 1973 Carl and Alice opened up C&A Hobby Shop in Mason City. It drew customers from hundreds of miles around. Carl kept the store open at the same location on 4th Avenue for 30 years until Carl's health forced its closure in 2003. The hobby shop was a labor of love for Carl. He had a passion for airplanes, model building and flying. Just as in education, Carl took immense satisfaction in helping others, especially kids, and watching them grow.
Carl is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Alice (Norton) Mealy; two sons, Carl and wife, Cynthia, of Normandy Park, Wash. and Robert Mealy of Madison, Wis.; three daughters, Cindy Mealy and husband, Bob Steinberg of Verona, Wis., Cathy Shea and husband, Kevin, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Alice Ann Janechek and husband, Lon, of Independence, Iowa; 12 grandchildren, Katie, Nicholas, Mathew, Amanda, Benjamin, Megan, Teresa, Lisa, Timothy, Michael, Brian, and Tedrick. Carl is also survived by his brothers, William Mealy of Mason City, Terrance Mealy and wife, Loretta, of Muscatine, Iowa; sister-in-law, Dorothy "Dottie" Mealy of Madison, Wis. and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He will also be missed by his extended family and friends.
Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, John Jerome "Jerry" Mealy; one nephew, Michael Mealy.
Throughout his life Carl enjoyed meeting and working with people. He participated in and supported youth and civic organizations. He challenged himself to make things better. He encouraged youth to pursue hobbies and careers. Through the military, education and the hobby shop, Carl has touched thousands along his life's journey.
Donations celebrating Carl's life can be made to Holy Family Church or Hospice of North Iowa, both located in Mason City.

Eva M. Kimble, 102, of Mason City, Iowa died Friday, March 4, 2005 at the I.O.O.F. Home in Mason City. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 8, at the Clear Lake United Methodist Church, Clear Lake with the Rev. Jan Burnett officiating. Family suggests memorials to the I.O.O.F. Home.
Eva was born April 2, 1902 in Jeffers, Minn. the daughter of Royal and Ida (Whiteman) Miller. She moved with her family to Clear Lake as a child and lived on the family farm south of Clear Lake for 26 years. She attended school in Clear Lake.
Eva married George Glen Kimble July 3, 1930 in Clear Lake. They moved to Mason City in 1944.
She enjoyed baby sitting many children in Mason City, including her own nieces and nephews and spending time with her family. She loved to travel, garden, raise flowers and play the piano.
Eva was a member of Clear Lake United Methodist Church, North Iowa Rock Club and Life member of Moose Lodge, Mason City.
She is survived by her brother-in-law, Charles "Buster" Lowe, and sister-in-law, Irene Miller, both of Clear Lake; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great-nieces and nephews.
She was the last of the nine siblings of Royal and Ida Miller. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George; five brothers, Earl, Burrel, Lloyd, Orin and LeRoy Miller and three sisters, Elsie Bussa, Myrtle Lowe and Addie Hanley.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, was in charge of arrangements.
