William Joel Britson was born April 16, 1925, in Roland, Iowa, to Arthur and Helga (Kvalem) Britson. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1944. The GI Bill enabled him to attend Iowa State Teachers College (now UNI) in Cedar Falls, where he met and later married Hope Harriet Sterling, of Sioux City, Iowa, on Aug. 31, 1946.
They had two daughters, Barbara born in 1948, and Susan, 1952.
Bill taught woodshop and industrial arts in Storm Lake, Iowa, for 11 years. By attending summer school at Colorado State College in Greeley, Colo., for the summers of 1958 through 1960, he earned a masters degree in Guidance and Counseling.
Bill Britson began his counseling career as Marshalltown’s first full-time counselor in the fall of 1959, and was named director of Guidance in the fall of 1960. He held that position until his retirement in June 1990, when he was awarded the Hall of Fame Award by the Iowa Association for Counseling and Development.
He was determined in his wish to have Marshalltown become one of the first Iowa communities to have elementary school counselors. His ultimate vision was finally realized this year: there is now a guidance counselor for each elementary school in Marshalltown.
Mr. Britson also held the following positions in state organizations: president of the Iowa School Counselors Association, 1970-71; president of Iowa Association for Counseling and Development, 1975-76; president of the Iowa Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, 1981-82. At the national level, he served three years as a senator for the American Association for Counseling and Development.
Locally, Bill served on the board of directors of the Mental Health Center of Mid-Iowa, and of Junior Achievement. In the 1970s he was an Elder at First Presbyterian Church.
After retiring he spent his time volunteering at the Iowa Veterans Home, where he spent many hours pushing wheelchairs, assisting with bus trips and serving on the Residents’ Advisory Board.
Retirement provided Bill and Hope with the time to make many car trips through the western and southern USA. They met their children and grandchildren for some favorite family excursions in California, Utah, Colorado, Texas and Florida.
At home, Bill passed on to his children and grandchildren the secrets of Norwegian cookery, particularly kumla, kringla and lefse, and he is known far and wide for his peanut brittle.
Bill had great love for the outdoors, complemented by his skills in golf, hunting, fishing and mountain hiking. His wife and daughters will be forever grateful for the “college summers” in Colorado, which led to many more summers in a rustic mountain cabin for Bill, Hope and any family members able to join them.
One of Bill’s proudest accomplishments was his ascent of Long’s Peak in Colorado in 1977, and again in 1987.
Most of all, Bill Britson was a kind and generous man whose calling was to help people. He had an infectious laugh and a sense of humor that kept him going to the end. He was educating people even in the last weeks of his illness, through a newspaper article on the wonderful experience he had with the people from Iowa River Hospice.
Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Hope Britson; brother Loren Britson of Roland; sisters Bette Ritland of Ames and Dolores Maynard of Appleton, Wis.; daughters Barbara Hassing of Minneapolis and Sue Britson of Richmond, Calif.; son-in-law Michael Hassing; and grandchildren Joel Hassing and Evan Britson.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Ralph Britson.
