Norma Anders
Services: Visitation is on Thurs. July 12, 2001 from 4-6pm at Overton Funeral Home in Dysart. The funeral service is on Fri. July 13th at 10:30 am at the United Methodist Church in Dysart. Burial is at Oneida Cemetery in rural Clutier followed by a lunch at the church fellowship hall.

Norma Anders was born November 11, 1924 in rural Dysart, Iowa, the daughter of James and Anna (Ottzen) Anders. She received her education in Dysart and graduated from high school in 1942. Norma then attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA earning a teaching certificate. She began teaching in the Greene School system and the Charles City school system before returning to the University of Northern Iowa. There she graduated with a B.A. degree in elementary education in 1950 and additional studies in library science. Norma then moved to Fort Dodge to teach, where she remained for 29 years. She returned to Dysart in 1979 following the death of her mother to care for her father until his death in 1981. Since that time she has remained in Dysart. Norma was a member of the Peace United Church of Christ and then the Dysart United Methodist Church, where she was active in Rebecca Circle. She belonged to local, state and national educational groups where she taught. While in Fort Dodge she was a charter member of Theta Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa an International Honorary Teachers Sorority, a past member of American Childhood Education Association, Delta Theta Chi, a social sorority, Association of University Women and the Webster County Retired Teachers Group. Upon moving to Dysart she transferred to the Alpha Alpha Chapter of Vinton. She served in several local and state offices of the sorority including twice as State Treasurer, State Vice President and later as State President. She belonged to the State Retired Teachers Association, as well as, the Home Study a division of Dysart Women’s Club, having served as Executive Board President in 1984-86. In free moments Norma enjoyed traveling and playing cards. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister that died in infancy. She is survived by several cousins, an aunt and uncle, Lawrence & Esther Heaton and many friends.

Margaret H. Bacon
Services: Services will be held on Friday, December 28, 2001 at the Garwin United Methodist Church with Rev. Cindy Morrison officating, burial will follow at the Garwin Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 PM on Thursday at the Overton Funeral Home in Garwin.
Memorial Fund: May be directed to the family.
Margaret H. Bacon was born May 26, 1911 at Dysart, Iowa, the daughter of Fred and Marie (Bannau) Wieck. Margaret received her education in country school and later graduated from Traer High School on her sixteenth birthday in 1927. She then attended Business College in Chillicothe, Misssouri. She then returned to the area where she worked for several lawyers in Traer and Toledo and also clerked a session of the House of Representatives in Des Moines. On August 8, 1932 she was united in marriage to Darrel Bacon and she continued to work until they started farming south of Garwin. In 1942 they purchased a farm north of Garwin where they lived until retiring to town. Margaret has been a resident of the Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer where her death came on Sunday, December 23, 2001 at the age of 90 years. She was a member of the Garwin United Methodist Church and charter member of United Methodist Women and the Friendly Neighbors Club. She proceeded in death by her parents, four brothers, two sisters and husband Darrel in 1973. She is survived by one son and his wife, Marley and Joan Bacon of Garwin, a daughter, Betty and Ralph Geiter of Grundy Center, Iowa, four grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Harold E. Baker
Services: Services will be held 10:30 Wednesday, Dec. 27,2000 at the Overton Funeral Home. Visitation 2:00 to 6:00 PM Tuesday, Dec. 26, 2000 at the Funeral Home. Rev. Donald Bogue. Military Graveside Services at Dysart Cemetery.

Harold Ernest Baker was born at Grundy Center, Iowa on August 21, 1920, the son of Clifford R. and Louise (Burmeister) Baker. Harold received his education in Grundy Center and Graduated from Dysart High School in the Class of 1938. Harold continued his education at Upper Iowa University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts Degree. Harold married Margaret Keen on September 20,1941 at Lancaster, MO. They first made their home in California where Harold served in the U.S. Navy during WW II. Later they returned to Iowa and lived in the Dysart Community. Following Harold and Margaret’s divorce, Harold moved to make his home in Waterloo where he was employed by the John Deer Tractor Co. On November 26,1977 Harold married Jean Cowles and lived in Waterloo and more recently in Cedar Falls. In free moments Harold enjoyed fishing and woodworking. He also enjoyed wintering in Mission Texas and in more recent months had been in failing health. His death came at their home in Mission, TX on Monday, December 18,2000 at the age of 80 years. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter Kathy, and two brothers: Ralph and Robert Waller. He is survived by his wife Jean of Cedar Falls, one son David Baker of Dysart, two daughters; Mrs. Annette Petersen of Sunrise Beach, MO and Debra Baker of Dysart, one step son Brian Evans of West Des Moines, one brother, Clifford L. Baker of Dysart, four grandchildren, two step grandchildren, five great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.

Marcella S. Boerm
Services: 10:30 am Thurs., Dec. 28th 2000 at the Peace United Church of Christ in Gladbrook with burial at the Crystal Cemetery in rural Toledo. Visitation will be held from 3-7pm on Wed., Dec. 27th at the Overton Funeral Home in Garwin.

Marcella Sadie Boerm was born December 25, 1920 at Gladbrook, Iowa, the daughter of William J. and Martha (Carstensen) Mohr. Marcella received her education and graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1938. She then moved to New York City where she was a nanny for a short time before returning to Gladbrook to work for area families. On September 12, 1941 Marcella was united in marriage to John Boerm at Gladbrook. They made their home and raised their family on their farm in rural Toledo. Marcella also worked seasonally for Tama Florist. In 1985 Marcella suffered a debilitating illness and John cared for her at home until 1990. Marcella then became a resident of Grandview Heights Care Center for 3 years before moving to Westbrook Acres where she continued to live following John’s death on January 10, 1994. In recent months Marcella’s health had failed and her death came at Westbrook Acres on her birthday, December 25, 2000 at the age of 80 years. Marcella was a 50 year member of both the Legion Auxiliary and Royal Neighbors. She was also a member of Peace United Church of Christ, Order of Eastern Star, Grandmothers Club, Afternoon Fidelus Womens Fellowship, the Memorial Committee, a charter member of Crystal Friendship Club, and a former member of Farm Bureau Chorus. Marcella is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a daughter Kathleen and a brother Donald. She is survived by a son, Gerald Boerm of Robbinsdale, MN, a daughter, Gayle Boerm of Toledo, IA, two brothers, Paul Mohr and Robert Mohr both of Gladbrook, IA, a sister, Doris Allen of Mountain Home, AR and a granddaughter Korrie.

Irene Caroline Brandt
Services: 10:30 am on Saturday, March 24, 2001 at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, La Porte City, Iowa. Visitation will be held at Overton Family Funeral Home, Dysart from 4:00-7:00 pm on Friday, March 23, 2001.

Irene Caroline Brandt was born on September 24, 1909 to Theodore & Carrie (Haywood) Wall in their home in Dubuque County, Iowa. She was raised around the Farley, Cascade and Manchester area where she also attended school. While in Manchester she lived with her father and helped raise her two younger sisters. On December 25, 1939 she was united in marriage to Arnold S. Brandt at the American Lutheran Church in Manchester. In 1941 they moved to a farm north of Dysart in the Geneseo Township, and Irene was active with the Geneseo United Methodist Church and the Ladies Aide. She enjoyed her large garden and the apple orchard that she and Arnold worked hard in each summer. Arnold and Irene had ponds built on the farmstead and they enjoyed fishing for bass and bluegills. In 1977, they retired to the community of La Porte City where they attended the St. Paul Methodist Church and Irene participated in UMW Circle. Arnold preceded her in death on June 4, 1983. In 1999, Irene moved to the Lutheran Home in Vinton following a fall in her home. It was there that she passed away on Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the age of 91 years. Irene was preceded in death by her parents, husband, 2 brothers, Ted & Albert Wall; 3 sisters, Evelyn Tischhauser, Pearl Keister & Anna Burns. Her memory is cherished by 2 sons and their wives, Jack and Joy Brandt of Golden, CO and Dale & Barbara Brandt of Jackson, WI; her daughter and her husband, Helen & Dennis Wieben of Dysart; a step daughter, Alice Werning of Cedar Rapids, who was raised by Paul & Frances Palmer; 9 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 1 great-great grandchild and 1 step great-great grandchild.

Todd R. Degner
Services: Visitation will be Tuesday, May 29, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ninde Funeral Home, 3841 S. Peoria Ave., Tulsa, OK. The Funeral will be held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, May 30, at New Haven United Methodist Church, 5603 S. New Haven, Tulsa, OK. A visitation will also be held at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart, IA on Thurs., May 31, 2001 from 5-8pm. A graveside service will be held on Fri., June 1, 2001 at 10:30 am at the Dysart Cemetery, Dysart, IA. A luncheon will follow at the United Methodist Church fellowship hall in Dysart.
Memorial Fund: May be directed to the Shoot for the Stars Pool & Library Campaign in Dysart.
Todd Robert Degner, 44, was killed in a private plane crash May 26, 2001. Todd was born June 5, 1956 in Waterloo, Iowa. He was the son of Robert and Mary Helen (Whiteley) Degner. He attended Dysart-Geneseo Community Schools, graduating in 1974 as class president. He attended Iowa State University, majoring in electrical engineering, and graduated in 1979. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Lambda Fraternity.
He was employed by Rockwell Collins in Cedar Rapids and later went to TransWorld Airlines in Kansas City. In 1985 he started working for American Airlines in Tulsa, Oklahoma, where he was later promoted to Managing Director of Aircraft Engineering.
He married Doris Maxwell at Independence, Missouri on May 11, 1985. He is survived by his wife Doris, two daughters, Laura 9 and Marissa 5, a sister and brother-in-law Hope and Steve Hix of Dysart, Iowa a brother and sister-in-law Mark and Della of Ankeny, Iowa, five nieces and nephews and his parents of Dysart.
He was an active member and Sunday School teacher at New Haven United Methodist Church in Tulsa. As a child he expressed a desire to fly and obtained his private pilot's license at age 16. He was also a member of AOAP (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association), Tulsoar (Radio controlled aircraft association), the Tulsa Skyhawks Soaring Club, and Oughtred Society (slide rule collecting society). Besides flying his interests included fencing and astronomy. He was also a certified scuba diver.

Marvin E. Dake
Services: Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, July 17, 2001 at the United Methodist Church in Dysart by Rev. Donald Bogue officating. Visitation will be held at the Overton Funeral Home in Dysart on Monday, July 16, 2001 from 4-7 PM. Burial will be in the Dysart Cemetery Dysart, Iowa.

Marvin Edwin Dake was born on November 26, 1917 at Mora, Minnesota. He was the son of Clarence and Nina (Ellsworth) Dake. At an early age Marvin moved with his family to Urbana, Iowa where he received his education. Marvin then worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp. and did work on State Parks in Iowa. On Sept 27,1945 he married Minnie Larsen at Maquoketa, Iowa and they lived there a short time, before moving to Vinton. Marvin was employed in the quarry and heavy equipment business for several years. In 1954 he became employed by the Benton County Road Maintenance. He and Minnie moved to Dysart where Marvin continued to live following Minnie’s death on Feb. 14, 1996. In free moments, Marvin enjoyed spending time with family and his grandchildren. He also enjoyed riding his bike, camping, hiking, and hunting game as well as mushrooms. Recently Marvin’s health had failed and more recently he had become a patient at Sunrise Hill Care Center at Traer, where his death came on Friday, July 13, 2001 at the age of 83 years. Marvin was preceded in death by his parents, wife Minnie, and one brother Harold. He is survived by two sons; Gary and his wife Carol of Hudson and Ron of Waterloo, two daughters and their husbands; Marilyn and Craig Peters of Gladbrook and Diana and Marty Corkery of Prescott AZ, two brothers; Willis and Vern Dake of Vinton, sixteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.

Arlene C. Delfs
Services: Visitation is to be held on Tuesday, April 24, 2001 from 4-8 pm at Overton Funeral Home in Garwin. The funeral service is on Wednesday, April 25, 2001 at 11:00 am at the Garwin United Methodist Church. Burial is at the Garwin Cemetery. A luncheon will be held at the church following the burial.

Arlene C. Delfs was born November 15, 1915, in rural Gladbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Ferdinand and Minnie (Hagen) Meggers. She graduated from Gladbrook High School in 1933. On January 12, 1938, she was united in marriage to Raynard L. Delfs at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Arlene and Raynard made their home farming 2 ½ miles east of Garwin for over 60 years. For the last 3 years Arlene lived at Westbrook Acres, Gladbrook, IA where she died on Saturday, April 21, 2001 at the age of 85 years. Family was very important to her. She loved being with her family and attending their many activities. Cooking, gardening and tending her flowers were among the things she most enjoyed. She was very active in her community and church, having leadership roles in United Methodist Women, Queen Esther, Women’s Club, 4-H, Howard Township Homemakers and Tama County Extension Council. She is survived by 6 children: Larry (Sandy) Delfs of Cedar Falls, IA; Sharon (Ric) DuBois of Willmar, MN; Jeanine (Jerry) Crouse of Freeport, IL; Donna Studdiford of Woodbury, MN; Mark (Teddy) Delfs of Annapolis, MD and Marcia (Randy) Rabe of Anita, IA. There are eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers Albert, Art and Marvin Meggers, and one sister Norma Billerbeck

Clarence L. Devine
Services: Visitation is on Wed., Nov. 14 2001 from 4-7pm. The funeral service is on Thurs., Nov. 15, 2001at 11:00 am at Overton Family Funeral Home in Garwin, IA. Burial is at the Garwin Cemetery followed by a lunch at the Garwin American Legion Hall.

Clarence L. Devine was born on May 9, 1922 in Kossuth County to Frank and Mary (Pfeiffer) Devine. He graduated from Algona High School in 1939. Clarence earned his B.A. Degree from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, IA and his M.A. Degree from Drake University in Des Moines, IA. He also did graduate work at Iowa State University in Ames, IA. On August 12, 1944 he was united in marriage to Elfrieda Lehman. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1943 to 1946. Clarence was a teacher, coach and administrator in Iowa schools for 35 years, retiring from the Garwin School system in 1983. Clarence is preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Robert. He is survived by his wife Elfrieda, his son Brian and his wife Kathy of Cedar Fall, Iowa, two grandchildren, Maggie and Mickey, four brothers: Bill of Moville, IA, Raymond of Mobile, AL, Duane of New Hampton, IA and David of Lodi, CA, and three sisters: Irene Schreiber of Fairmont, MN, Andrea Lowe of Fairmont, MN and Louise Devine of Spencer, IA.
