WATERLOO -- Gale T. Haberling, 51, of Marana, Ariz., formerly of Waterloo, died Sunday, Dec. 27, 1998, at Northwest Hospital, Tucson, of natural causes.
He was born April 11, 1947, in Waverly, son of Theodore and Norma Baker Haberling. He was a machinst for the mining industry.
Survived by: a daughter, Tracy Nickel; a son, Jason; five grandchildren; two sisters, Kay Simerson of Waterloo and Rosemary Krep; and his fiancee, Judy Stro Hecker of Tucson.
Services: will be private. Carrillo's Tucson Mortuary Inc., Tucson, is in charge of arrangements.

WATERLOO -- Charlene DeJaeger Mathews, 68, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, of a cerebral hemorrhage.
She was born Feb. 16, 1930, in Manson, daughter of Martin and Hazel Meiners Meyer. She married Clement DeJaeger on Dec. 9, 1949, in Nashua. He died April 19, 1974. She married Don Mathews in March 1984 in Waterloo. He died in April 1991.
Mrs. Mathews attended Iowa State Teacher's College, Cedar Falls. She was employed by the Waterloo Community School System at Kingsley and Kittrell elementary schools and West High School, retiring in 1995 after 28 years.
Survived by: a daughter, Mary Nicholas of Waterloo; three grandchildren; two brothers, Vernon Meyer of Rogers, Ark., and Theodore Meyer of Marseilles, Ill.; and two sisters, Myrna Rieck of Jordan, Minn., and Connie Bellinghausen of St. Charles, Mo.
Preceded in death by: two brothers, Jonathan and Michael Meyer.
Services: 10 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m Friday at Chapel of Memories West Family Funeral Care, and for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to Kittrell Elementary School library or Zion Lutheran Altar Guild.

WATERLOO -- Earl Raymond Dickinson, 85, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Dec. 29, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center of natural causes.
He was born May 25, 1913, in Waterloo, son of Raymond Clair and Lulu Eva Green Dickinson. He married Maybeth Lyon on June 20, 1936, in Nashua.
Mr. Dickinson was a machinist at John Deere for 40 years, then was a tour guide for 10 years.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Tommy of Girard, Ohio; a daughter, Carolyn Haley of Washburn; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Clyde of Prentice, Wis., and Glenn of Raleigh, N.C.
Preceded in death by: four brothers, Cecil, Lowell, Ernest and Elmer.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday at Cedar Heights Baptist Church, with burial in Garden of Memories. Friends may call from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. Visitation also for an hour before services Saturday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the church.

WATERLOO -- Gertrude Anne Oliphant, 84, of Waterloo, died Wednesday, Dec. 23, 1998, at home of heart failure.
She was born Sept. 5, 1914, in Scotch Grove, daughter of Clarence Alden and Mary Tritten Sackett. She married John Oliphant on June 11, 1932, in Galena, Ill.
Survived by: her husband; two daughters, Carol Oliphant of Cedar Falls and Dolores Good of Waterloo; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Sackett of Waterloo.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Barbara Maclennan; four sisters, Martha, Esther, Mildred and Juanita; and three brothers, Elmer, Howard and Lyle.
Services: 1 p.m. Monday at Dahl-Van Hove-Schoof Funeral Home, Cedar Falls, with burial in Elmwood Cemetery, Waterloo. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

WATERLOO -- Lieselotte "Mickey" Manning, 74, of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at home of natural causes.
She was born June 20, 1924, in Linden, Germany, daughter of Albert and Frieda Jurk Hedegger. She married Lester McCallum; they were divorced. She then married Albert C. Manning Sr.; they were later divorced.
Mrs. Manning worked in bookkeeping and clerical positions for many years.
Survived by: two daughters, Millie Droste-Wolfgram of Dublin, Ohio, and JoAnn Selle of Grenada Hills, Calif.; three sons, Mack A. McCallum of Antelope, Calif., Jack McCallum of Austin, Texas, and Al Manning of Waterloo; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gisela Mueller of Berlin, Germany.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Gunther Hedegger.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Chapel of Memories, and for an hour before services at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

WATERLOO -- Melvin L. "Shorty" Holmes, 82 of Waterloo, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Allen Memorial Hospital of complications of surgery.
He was born April 9, 1916, in Plainfield, son of Frank David and Hattie Susie Potter Holmes. He married Alice I. Remley on May 30, 1940, in Plainfield.
Mr. Holmes served in the U.S. Army during World War II, was employed by J. Roach and Sons, Plainfield, for many years and was maintenance supervisor at Goodwill Industries in Waterloo, retiring in 1981.
Survived by: his wife, Alice; two sons, Leonard of Lakewood, Ohio, and Richard of Sumter, S.C.; two daughters, Janice Holmes of Waterloo and Mary Severs of Clarksville; six grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; two great-grandsons; and a stepgreat-grandson.
Preceded in death by: a grandson; five brothers, Earl, Legrand, Clio, Owen and Carlton; and four sisters, Velner Brockway, Leah McIntosh, Ethel Holmes and Florence Lauzon.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul's United Methodist Church, with committal services at 2 p.m. Monday in Willow Lawn Cemetery, Plainfield. Graveside military rites will be conducted by Waverly American Legion Post 176. Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. today at Parrott & Wood Family Funeral Care, and for an hour before services Monday at the church.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

CEDAR FALLS -- Rachel M. Friis, 74, of Cedar Falls, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Covenant Medical Center, Waterloo, of cancer.
She was born May 18, 1924, in Waverly, daughter of John C. and Ella Kahagen Hildebrandt. She married Robert Friis on Sept. 7, 1945, in Nashua. He died Aug. 12, 1998.
She and her husband managed both the Washington Park Country Club and the Beaver Hills Country Club, and were partners in the Cypress Lounge, all in Cedar Falls. Until their retirement in 1983, they managed the Lake Creek Country Club in Storm Lake.
Survived by: three sons, James of Cedar Falls, Scott of Arvada, Colo., and Dennis Hagenow of Cedar Falls; four grandchildren; and a brother, Harmon Hildebrandt of Sumner.
Preceded in death by: a daughter, Diana Fitzhugh; two brothers; and a sister.
Memorial service: 11 a.m. Wednesday for both Mrs. Friis and her husband at Nazareth Lutheran Church Chapel, with inurnment at a later date in Cedar Valley Memorial Gardens. There is no visitation. Richardson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WATERLOO -- Dale M. Simpson, 86, of Bartels Lutheran Home and formerly of Waterloo, died Tuesday, Dec. 22, 1998, at the Bartels Home of natural causes.
He was born May 9, 1912, in Galt, son of Thomas and Harriet Clark Simpson. He married Marian Lura Barron on Nov. 6, 1936, in Nashua. She died June 23, 1995.
Mr. Simpson owned the Century Service Station on East Fifth Street until retiring in 1976. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was past master of Martin Lodge No. 624 A.F. & A.M. and past president of Waterloo High Twelve Club.
Survived by: two daughters, Shirley Berry of Cedar Falls and Marlys Simpson of Stavanger, Norway; and a son, Thomas of Athens, Ga.
Preceded in death by: four brothers, Leo, Lester, Glen and Ivan; and three sisters, Violet Schppler, Anna Meeker and Doris Huen.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Waterloo Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, where there will be a 7 p.m. public Masonic service by Martin Lodge No. 624 A.F. & A.M.

WATERLOO -- Merwin R. Hamer, 84, of 1410 W. Dunkerton Road, died Friday, Dec. 25, 1998, at Country View care center of natural causes.
He was born Jan. 10, 1914, in Waterloo, son of Clarence J. and Elizabeth Reitz Hamer. He graduated from Orange High School.
Survived by: two daughters, Doris Jean Miller of Stockton, Kan., and Ruth Riedesel of Tipton.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Robert P.
Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Locke Funeral Home, with burial in Orange Township Cemetery. Friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials: may be directed to South Waterloo Church of The Brethren or Country View.

WATERLOO -- Genevieve "Jean" Fischer, 77, of Dows and formerly of Waterloo, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998, at Dows Care Center of natural causes.
She was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Oelwein, daughter of Ralph and Emma Decker. She married Norman Eugene Fluke and they were later divorced. She married Raymond R. Fischer on Dec. 8, 1949, in Waverly. He died Feb. 16, 1983.
She was employed as a licensed practice nurse at Allen Memorial Hospital for many years. She also worked for many years at the Cedar Falls Health Care Center and also served as a senior companion.
Survived by: two sons, Allan Fluke of Oklahoma City and Mark Fischer of Waterloo; a daughter, Colleen Waters of Dows; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Gladys Schuller of Oelwein.
Preceded in death by: a brother, Ernie Decker.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Service/South Street, with burial in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Friends may call from noon to services on Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials: may be directed to the family.

WATERLOO -- Elizabeth "Betty" Walker, 79, of 219 Kingbard Blvd., died at home Monday, Dec. 21, 1998, after a lengthy illness.
She was born Nov. 9, 1919, in Fort Dodge, daughter of Walter E. and Ursula M. Ennis Murray. She married Dr. John R. Walker on Feb. 22, 1943, in Iowa City.
Mrs. Walker attended St. Mary's College of Notre Dame, South Bend, Ind.
Survived by: her husband; two sons, John R. Jr. of Waterloo and Michael J. of Wilmette, Ill.; seven daughters, Deborah J. Petersen, Martha J. Johnston and Susan E. Crouse, all of Waterloo, Patricia K. Leese of Leawood, Kan., Marietta M. Walker of Cedar Falls, Margaret M. Hieb of Fargo, N.D., and Elizabeth A. Schoenberger of Waterford, Conn.; 26 grandchildren; a great-granddaughter; a brother, John J. Murray of Atlanta; and four sisters, Evelyn Fitzgibbons of Estherville, Jean Porter of Oskaloosa, Anne O'Neil of Burlington and Sue Davis of Grand Rapids, Mich.
Preceded in death by: two sisters, Kay Sehring and Mary Ambrose.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Edward's Catholic Church, with burial in Mount Olivet Cemetery. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Hagarty-Waychoff-Grarup Funeral Services/West Ridgeway, where there will be a 5 p.m. rosary and a 7 p.m. vigil service.
Memorials: may be directed to the church or Cedar Valley Hospice.
