Barney Vermeer
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Barney Vermeer, 88, of Rock Rapids died unexpectedly Thursday at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. at Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Jesse D. Van Berkum
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Jesse Dale Van Berkum, 14-year-old son of of Ivan and Colleen (Hoftyzer) Van Berkum, of Sioux Center died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at Sioux Center Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center with the Rev. Mark De Witt officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will begin Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. with the family present from 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.
Jesse Dale Van Berkum was born Nov. 15, 1983, in Sioux Center. He attended school through the eight grade in the Sioux Center Community Schools. He was a confessing member of First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. He was a member of Boy Scout Troop 211, achieving the rank of Life Scout and having recently attained the Order of the Arrow. He was a member of the Sioux Center Middle School mixed chorus, boys chorus, band, and track team. He was also a member of the church softball team, and church orchestra.
Survivors include his parents; two brothers, Jonathan and David; maternal grandparents, Gerold and Inez Hoftyzer of Worthington, Minn.; and many aunts and uncles.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Garrold and Alma Van Berkum.

Everette G. Anderson
Everette G. Anderson, 85, of Sioux City died Wednesday at a Omaha, Neb. hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Morningside Lutheran Church. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in West Nidaros Cemetery at Baltic, S.D. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday, with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Frederick Bennett Sr.
Frederick "Fred" Bennett Sr., 85, of Sioux City died Thursday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Arthur W. Stokes
Arthur W. "Honest Abe" Stokes, 85, of Sioux City died Thursday, June 25, 1998, at the Matney Morningside Manor.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Graceland Park Cemetery, with Pastor Troy Elie of Morningside Assembly of God officiating. There will be no visitation. Larkin Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Stokes was born Jan. 25, 1913, in Sioux City, the son of Arthur and Lillie (Fox) Stokes Sr.
He married Lois A. Newhouse on Nov. 24, 1933, in a public wedding at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux City. He was employed with Needham Packing for 25 years and as a painter with Blankenship Painting Company.
He was a member of Morningside Assembly of God. He was active in the Sioux City Community Theater and was a professional boxer. He bore a strong resemblance to Abraham Lincoln, portraying him in many parades including the Bicentennial Parade.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Arthur J. of Columbus, Neb., David B. and his wife Carole and Richard and his wife Cathy, all of Sioux City; two daughters, Sally and her husband Jim Collier and Barbara Ryan, all of Sioux City; 14 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Junior and Hellana of Germany.
He was preceded in death by 13 brothers and sisters.
Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

Cecelia Suedbeck
Cecelia Suedbeck, 103, of Gregory, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Fairfax, S.D. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery. There will be a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Parish in Gregory. Clausen Funeral Home of Burke, S.D. is in charge of the arrangements.

Jack J. Weiner
Jack J. Weiner, 91, of Sioux City died Thursday; Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

George D. McKown
LE MARS, Iowa - George DeWayne McKown, 53, of Fort Myers, Fla., formerly of Le Mars, died Tuesday, June 23, 1998, in Fort Myers.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. Private burial will be at a later date.
Mr. McKown was born Oct. 1, 1944, in Le Mars, the son of George B. and Elaine (Arens) McKown.
Survivors include his mother of Le Mars; a brother, Harry of Le Mars; three sisters, Barbara Macomber and Donna and her husband Jim Harlan, all of Le Mars and Ardith and her husband Steven Dunnam of Indiana; two daughters, Anitra and her husband Paul Gudbar of Storm Lake, Iowa and Patricia McKown of Sioux City; a grandson, Christopher Gudbar; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; grandparents, Harley and Florence McKown and Martin and Elizabeth Arens; and a great-nephew, Daniel L. Shively.

Vern Wiltgens
SIBLEY, Iowa - Vern "Smokey" Wiltgens, 71, of Sibley died Wednesday at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 7 to 8 p.m., at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.

Jesse Van Berkum
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Jesse Van Berkum, 14, of Sioux Center died Thursday at the Sioux Center Commuity Hospital of injuries suffered in a moped accident on May 28, 1998.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at First Reformed Church in Sioux Center. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center. Visitation with the family present, will resume 1:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the church.

Ervin H. Wilcke
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Ervin H. Wilcke, 83, of Ida Grove died Wednesday, June 24, 1998, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. John Schauer and the Rev. Andrew Currao officiating. Burial will be in Mount Hope Cemetery at Battle Creek, Iowa. Visitation will be after 9 a.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Saturday at the church.
Mr. Wilcke was born Sept. 11, 1914, in Holstein, Iowa, the son of Christ and Lydia (Will) Wilcke. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith.
He married Mabel Schultz on May 10, 1953, in Ida Grove. He had farmed in Ida County, Iowa all his life.
Survivors include four brothers, Harlan of Ida Grove, Walter and his wife Helen of Texas, Floyd and Wendell and his wife Jean, all of Battle Creek, Iowa; five sisters, Frances and her husband Archie Rohwedder of Nevada, Iowa, Phyllis Christie, Marie and her husband Alvin Schultz and Bonnie Spotts, all of Battle Creek and Isabel Plagge and her friend LeRoy Kurtz of Fremont, Neb.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, two half brothers and two half sisters.

John E. Sharkey
STORM LAKE, Iowa - John "Jack" E. Sharkey, 53, of Storm Lake died unexpectedly Tuesday, June 23, 1998, at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove, Iowa, with the Rev. Gerald M. Fisch officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Mr. Sharkey was born Sept. 1, 1944, in Carroll, Iowa, the son of Earl and Margaret (Shanks) Sharkey. He graduated from Odebolt-Arthur Community School in 1961. He joined the National Guard, then served in the Vietnam War.
He was employed in Denver, Colo, where he lived until 1988. He then moved back to Iowa, where he was employed with IBP for 10 years and then at Merrill Manufacturing in Storm Lake. He enjoyed golfing.
Survivors include his mother of Arthur, Iowa; three brothers, Kenneth and his wife Connie of Algona, Iowa, Leslie and his wife Cindy of Sac City, Iowa and Charles and his fiancee Dee of Wall Lake, Iowa; three sisters, Shirley and her husband Gary Danielson of Jefferson, Iowa, LaVon Lane of Arthur and Janet and her husband Craig Fitch of Battle Creek, Iowa; his special friend, Shelley Cowell of Truesdale, Iowa; 12 nieces; and five nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, a brother, Larry and his grandparents.
