Cecil D. Davis
Cecil Douglas Davis, 56, of Astor, Fla., formerly of Sioux City, died July 24, 1997, at his residence.

Services were held at Ebenezer Lutheran Church in Pierson, Fla., on July 28. Burial was in Ebenezer Lutheran Cemetery.

Mr. Davis was born Feb. 3, 1941, in Sergeant Bluff, the son of John and Jenna Davis. He was raised in Sergeant Bluff and attended school there, graduating in 1959.

He served in the U.S. Army, stationed on the Alaskan Due Line.

He married Kay Aker on Sept. 2, 1966, in Sioux City.

Mr. Davis was employed as a manufacturing engineer for Lockheed-Martin. He also worked for the Zenith Radio Corporation in Sioux City until it closed.

He was a member of Ebenezer Lutheran Church and enjoyed music and sports.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Jennifer Gustafson and Kimberly David, both of Daytona, Fla., and Danette Davis of Brandon, Fla.; four brothers, Leo and Lyle, both of Branson, Mo., John L. of North Highland, Calif., and Roger of Evans, Ga.; a sister, Shirley Spangler of Evans, Ga.; and a granddaughter.

Arthur M. Ewing
Arthur M. Ewing, 79, of Sioux City died Thursday at a Sioux City hospital of a heart attack.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Park Cemetery. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Devon Q. Hills
Devon Quinne Hills, 8-month-old son of Anita Ford of Sioux City, died Saturday, Aug. 2, 1997, at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Elem Ford officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until service time today at the funeral home.

Devon was born Nov. 25, 1996, in Sioux City.

He was a member of Mount Sinai Church.

Survivors include his mother; his father, Irvin Hills of Sioux City; his grandparents, Elem Ford of Sioux City and Al and Rena Mae Hills of Jeanertte, La; and several aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Egellow Ford.

Pallbearers will be Kelvin, Elem Jr. and Steve Ford and Carol Hills.

George B. Hutchins
George B. Hutchins, 89, of Sioux City died of cancer Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, at the residence of his daughter, Virginia H. Tornell.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. today at Cathedral of the Epiphany in Sioux City, with the Rev. Randy Guerdet officiating. Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery at Burlington, N.J. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.

Mr. Hutchins was born April 20, 1908, in Palmyra, N.J. He graduated from Rutgers University in 1933.

He was employed in the insurance industry for 25 years, before retiring.

He married Eva R. Reiser on April 25, 1937, in Brunswick, N.J. The couple raised their family in Metuchen, N.J., and had resided in Sun City Center, Fla. for the last 12 years.

He was a member of the Kiwanis Club in New Jersey, which founded the Key Club. He sang in the church choir and served on the school board. He enjoyed carpentry and golf.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Virginia H. Tornell of Sioux City, Barbara H. Nelson of Dover, N.H., and Susan Lenore Hutchins of Minneapolis; seven grandchildren; and eight nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a brother, William, and four sisters, Clare, AnaMay, Rae and Amanda.

Leo J. Lavinger
Leo J. Lavinger, 73, of Sioux City died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997, at the residence of his daugahter, Patricia, in Sioux Falls following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Gary Radtke, pastor of Oakwood Park Christian Church in Sioux Falls, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post 1973. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Lavinger was born Dec. 24, 1923, in Sioux City, the son of Joseph and Helen (Kilroy) Lavinger.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II aboard the USS Harris.

He married Rosemary J. Mitchell on March 4, 1946, in Sioux City. She died Aug. 10, 1988, in Sioux City.

He was employed as a graphic artist and printer for the Sioux City Journal and D.W. Versteegen Publishing Company. He owned and operated Lavinger Printing Company for 30 years, retiring in January 1996.

He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Sergeant Floyd Post 1973.

Survivors include two daughter and their husbands, Patricia and Arlin "Pete" Simmons and Debbilou and Steven Thompson, all of Sioux Falls; a brother, John of Long Beach, Calif.; a sister, Delores Noel of Northridge, Calif.; 11 grandchildren, Jeff and Brad Wyant, David Lavinger, Adam and Steve Thompson, Christopher, Mikal, Ryan and Shea Simmons, Heather Heinis and Jennifer Simmons; and three great-grandsons.

Wayne L. Shoop
Wayne L. Shoop, 59, of Sioux City died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home, with the Rev. Alex T. Wash-ington officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visit-ation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.

Mr. Shoop was born March 23, 1938, in Elk Point, S.D., the son of Lawrence and Marie (Allen) Shoop.

He served in the U.S Air Force from 1956 to 1960. Following his discharge, he moved to Sioux City.

He married Sharon L. Hansen on Nov. 2, 1956, in Elk Point.

He was employed as a canvas foreman for Mullin Awning and Siding for 37 years. He also operated an upholstery business, River City Upholstery, out of his home for 28 years. He was an active bowler for 30 years.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Dona Dickson of Sioux City and Dustyne Merryman of Salix, Iowa; a son, Danny Berg of Sioux City; two brothers, Lonnie Shoop of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dan Swieca of Chicago; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Patrick Eugene and Loren C.

Pallbearers will be Marty Castor, Kevin Lorimor, Dick Herzog, Tim Oberreuter, Marty Pasker, Cal Veach and Brian and Wayne Lilla.

Alta Ahrenstorff
LAKE PARK, Iowa - Alta Ahrenstorff, 83, of Lake Park died Monday at Lake Park Care Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Lake Park United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Silver Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present at 7 p.m., at the Turner Funeral Home in Lake Park.

Fred Anderson
ONAWA, Iowa - Fred Anderson, 90, of Onawa died Monday at Elmwood Care Centre in Onawa.

Private family services will be held. Burial will be in Onawa City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.

Marie S. Carlson
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Marie S. Carlson, 86, of Storm Lake died Monday at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Scandinavian Cemetery at rural Alta, Iowa. Visitation will be Thursday, with the family present from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and an Order of the Eastern Star memorial service at 7:30 p.m., at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Harvey DeVries
OKOBOJI, Iowa - Harvey DeVries, 70, of Okoboji died Sunday at a Green Bay, Wis., hospital.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Turner Funeral Home in Spirit Lake, Iowa. Burial will be in Lakeview Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Jennie deWit
INWOOD, Iowa - Jennie deWit, 74, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Inwood, died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Faith Reformed Church in Rock Valley, Iowa, with Bartel Elshout officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery. Visitation will be today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Porter Funeral Home in Rock Valley.

Mrs. deWit was born Nov. 14, 1922, in Rock Valley, the daughter of Evert and Gertje (Van Donkelaar) Van Ginkel. She attended Rock Valley Christian School.

She married John C. deWit on Sept. 15, 1941, in Dakota City. The couple farmed near Rock Rapids, Iowa, until March 1949, when they moved to a farm near Inwood. In 1981 they retired and moved to Country Estates in Sioux Falls and spent their summers at Hiawatha Beach Resort in Walker, Minn. In November 1996, they moved to The Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls.

Surivors icnlude her husband; five sons, Arthur B. and John and his wife, Michele, all of Sioux Falls, August and his wife, Alma, of Rosemount, Minn., Norman and his wife, Darla, of Garretson, S.D., and Damon and his wife, Sandra, of Brookings, S.D.; five daughters and their husbands, Gladys and David Stubben of Dubuque, Iowa, Margaret and Douglas Delker of Des Moines, Edna and Daniel Van Sweden of Sand Lake, Mich., Ruth and Loren Groeneweg of Rock Valley and Natalie and Kevin Spitzig of Ankeny, Iowa; 31 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Edward and Frederika Van Ginkel of Ontario, Calif.; a sister, Kate Hoogendoorn of Rock Valley; and a sister-in-law, Ellie Van Ginkel of Rock Valley.

She was preceded in death by a son, James; a granddaughter, Angela Van Sweden; and six brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be directed to The Inn on Westport in Sioux Falls.

G. Mae Eberly
LAWTON, Iowa - G. Mae (Wolf) Eberly, 66, of Lawton died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, with Dr. Robert E. Peters officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mrs. Eberly was born May 19, 1931, in South Sioux City. She graduated from South Sioux City High School.

She married Francis Eberly on Nov. 7, 1953, in Elk Point. The couple made their home in Lawton.

She was employed at the Palmer House for 18 years and for Mid-Step Services for nine years.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Dennis and Debra and Dale and Vicki, all of Sioux City; seven grandchildren, Chad, Chuck, Kristi, Ginny Mae, Nicholas, Stephanie and Jessica Eberly; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Bob Wolf and his wife, Mary, and Bill Wolf, all of South Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Bonnie and Kenneth Jones of Waterbury, Neb.; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Wayne and Annette Eberly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son and a grandson.

Pallbearers will be Chad, Chuck, Wayne and Ron Eberly, Don Hair and Jim Wilson.

Lester M. Fischer
HOMER, Neb. - Lester M. Fischer, 75, of Homer died unexpectedly Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, in Centreville, Mich., of a heart attack while camping.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Homer, with the Rev. Jeanne Dahl officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wakefield (Neb.) City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 8 p.m., at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

Mr. Fischer was born May 3, 1922, near Bloomington, Neb., the son of John M. and Ellie (Skiles) Fischer. He attended rural school and graduated from Republician City High School in 1940.

He moved with his family to Wakefield in 1941.

He married Frances A. Miller on Nov. 27, 1944. The couple farmed near Wakefield until 1956, when they moved to a farm near Homer, where he farmed and did carpenter work. He moved into Homer in 1970. Mrs.Fischer died Sept. 19, 1984.

He married Lois Schubert Oct. 26, 1985.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Homer American Legion Buckland Post 97, a past member of the Homer Fire and Rescue Department, and a member of South Sioux City Eagles Aerie 2492, Masonic Lodge Omadi 5, the Eastern Star, and the Sioux City Consistory.

He served many years on the rural school board in Wakefield, the town and school board in Homer and the Lutheran Church Council.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Dennis and Linda of South Sioux City; a daughter, Karen Lamb of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two stepdaughters and their husbands, Connie and Chuck Schoenberner of South Sioux City and Pam and Ken Ausdemore of Sioux Falls, S.D.; a brother, Harold of Wakefield; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Marsha and Marcus Fischer; four step grandchildren, Kari and Kyle Schoenberner and Brandon and Britni Ausdemore.

Pallbearers will be Richard and Douglas Fischer, Maynard Schubert, Duane Brugh, Lynn Miller and Robert Criss.

Barbara Hansen
LE MARS, Iowa - Barbara "Barb" Hansen, 35, of Le Mars died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.

Dora C. Haug
ELK POINT, S.D. - Dora C. Haug, 99, of Elk Point died Monday, Aug. 4, 1997, at Prairie Estates Care Center in Elk Point.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Elk Point, with the Rev. Mary Feistner officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. today, with a prayer service at 8 p.m., at the Anderson Funeral Home in Elk Point.

Mrs. Haug was born April 12, 1898, in rural Elk Point, the daughter of Jens A. and Bergitte (Ranum) Ven.

She married Ole H. Haug on Jan. 17, 1924, in rural Elk Point. The couple farmed in rural Elk Point. He died Dec. 31, 1967, in Vermillion, S.D.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, the church choir, the church's WELCA organization, Veterans of World War I 2642 Auxiliary, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 915 and the Dakota Hospital Auxiliary in Vermillion.

She taught Norwegian language classes at her home.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, James and Janet of rural Elk Point and Arnold and Ruth of Cloverdale, Calif.; a daughter, Dorothy Langle of rural Elk Point; seven grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, three sisters, a grandson, and a son-in-law.

Thomas J. Ney
SHELDON, Iowa - Thomas "Tommy" J. Ney, 8, of Sheldon died Monday at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Matlock, Iowa. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday, with a rosary conducted by the Catholic Daughters of America at 7 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Sheldon Funeral Service.

Raymond W. Peterson
SLOAN, Iowa - Raymond W. Peterson, 79, of Sloan, formerly of Beresford, S.D., died Monday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the Wood Funeral Home in Sloan. Burial will be in Wagner Cemetery at Wagner, S.D. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Albert L. Stratman
FORDYCE, Neb. - Albert Leo Stratman, 84, of Fordyce died Monday at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John The Baptist Church in Fordyce. Burial will be in St. John The Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today, with a rosary at 2 p.m., at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington, Neb. Visitation will resume with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. today at the church.

Ronald D. Vollink
SHELDON, Iowa - Ronald Dean Vollink, 46, of Sheldon died Sunday, Aug. 3, 1997, at St. Mary's hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at First Reformed Church in Sheldon, with the Rev. Gary Roozeboom officiating. Burial will be in Eastlawn Cemetery. Sheldon Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Vollink was born July 8, 1951, in Sheldon, the son of Gilbert and Margaret (Mulder) Vollink. He attended school in Archer, Iowa, and then in Sheldon. He attended Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.

He was employed as a construction worker with Mouw and Den Hartog Construction for 12 years. He was a carpentry instructor at Northwestern Community College for 10 years.

He served in the National Guard.

He married Cheryle Groen on May 10, 1997, in Sheldon. the couple made their home in Sheldon.

He was a member of the O'Brien County Sno Trackers Snowmobile Club.

Survivors include his wife; a son, Justin Groen of Sheldon; five daughters, Andrea, Lori and Natalie Vollink and Tracie and Michelle Groen, all of Sheldon; his father and his wife, Gilbert and Bonnie Vollink of Archer, Iowa; a brother and his wife, Galen and Patty of Sanborn, Iowa; a sister and her husband, Karen and Philip Zoet of Hull, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Claude Struve of Sheldon; and seven nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his mother; a sister, Diane Struve; and his grandparents, Tunis and Minnie Vollink and Minko and Ann Mulder.

Pallbearers will be Jeff Ruth, Bob Schlimgen, Dan Noteboom, Gary Vollink, Bill Noack and Marwin Vogel.
