Esther C. Earleywine
Esther C. Earleywine, 80, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at the Matney Morningside Manor following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. George Zehnder, associate pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Earleywine was born June 19, 1917, in Logan, Iowa, the daughter of Julius and Jenny (Jordan) Trostheim.

She married Alma "Al" Earleywine on Nov. 29, 1965, in Dakota City. He died April 7, 1975, in Sioux City. She was employed with Hovland Manufacturing, retiring in 1984.

Survivors include two sons, LaVerne Thompson of Missouri Valley, Iowa, and Martin Thompson of Chicago, Ill.; four daughters and their husbands, Judy and Roger Morgan of Lebanon, Ind., Karen and Carroll Egdorf, Sharon and James Richardson and Jane and Hazen Johnson, all of Sioux City; two brothers, Robert and Donald Trostheim, both of Sioux City; four sisters, Alice Adams, Lucille Myers and Marion Trostheim, all of Sioux City and Helen Martin of Mason City, Iowa; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Thompson and six brothers and sisters.

Harry A. Ferrell
Harry A. Ferrell, 33, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.

The body was cremated. There will be no services. Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Ferrell was born May 25, 1964, in Moline, Ill. He attended Riverside High School in Port Byron, Ill.

He was employed as a civilian contractor with the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Okla. He later worked in the Kansas/Illinois area until 1996, when he moved to Sioux City. He was employed with Sioux City Brick and Tile Company.

Survivors include his special friend, Janet Williams of Sioux City; his mother, Iva M. Smith of Hillsdale, Ill.; two sisters, Rhonda Herrmann of Winston-Salem, N.C. and Vera Reay of Twin Falls, Idaho; and a brother, James Ferrell Jr. of Burlington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his father.

John F. Stabile
John F. Stabile, 75, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at his residence.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church. Entombment will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 9 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Stabile was born Aug. 25, 1922, in San Rufo, Italy, the son of Frank and Mary Ann (Pagano) Stabile. He came to the United States and Sioux City with his mother as a young boy.

He entered the U.S. Army in February 1941 and served with the 34th Infantry Division in Operation Torch in Northern Africa. His awards include the Bronze Arrowhead, the Bronze Star, two Bronze Battle Stars, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.

He married Yvette Seavey on May 30, 1945.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Survivors include his wife, five sons, John, Frank and his wife Debbie, Roland and his wife Joann, Bob and his wife Liz and Joseph and his wife Vicky, all of Sioux City; two daughters and their husbands, Rose Mary and Thomas Uhl of Merrill, Iowa and Robbie and Jeff Ray of Thorton, Colo.; a sister, Mary of Dallas, Texas; three brothers, Tony, Joseph and Pat, all of Sioux City; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Robert; two grandsons, Joseph and John; and a brother, Carl.

Pallbearers will be his sons, John Jr., Frank, Roland, Coni and Joseph, and his grandsons, Ronnie and Frank.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

Martin A. Simon
Martin A. Simon, 94, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at the Indian Hills Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Services will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Joseph Dillinger, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Simon was born Aug. 5, 1903, in Beatrice, Neb., the son of Martin and Justina (Richter) Simon. He moved to Sioux City in 1919.

He married Minnie B. Jorgensen on Feb. 16, 1935, in Sioux City. He was employed as a paving foreman with the City of Sioux City from 1934, until his retirement in 1971.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Martin G. and Bonnie of Omaha, Neb., Lawrence E. and Patricia of Sioux City and John R. and Sandy of Denver, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Virginia and Ronald Krier of Pocahontas, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters.

Hazel A. Sweeney
Hazel A. Sweeney, 91, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at the Matney Morningside Manor.

Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Thomas E. Geelan, pastor, officiating. Burial will be at noon Saturday in Riverview Cemetery at Centerville, S.D. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m. and a vigil service at 7:30 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Sweeney was born Feb. 4, 1906, in Beresford, S.D., the daughter of John and Mary (Sampica) Aslin. She was raised in Davis, S.D., and graduated from Centerville High School in 1924. She attended Normal Teachers College in Madison, S.D. and taught for a few years in Davis.

She married Bernard C. "Barney" Sweeney on Aug. 28, 1928, in Minneapolis, Minn. He died March 13, 1994, in Sioux City. She lived most of her life in Mitchell, S.D., then moved to Sioux City in 1992.

While in Mitchell, she was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, the Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, the St. Joseph Hospital Auxiliary, the Notre Dame P.T.A. and the Research Club.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Donna and Roger Higgins of Omaha, Neb. and Gloria and Richard Champ of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter; a sister, Stella; and five brothers, Lenard, Vernon, Lionel, Ferd and Clovis.

Pallbearers will be Michael, Kelly, Tim and John Higgins, Mary Beth King, Kathleen Ladd, Cecelia Finley, Chris, Michael and Mark Champ, Andy Champ-Doran, Teresa Weibel and Beth Dimig.

David F. Wilson
David F. Wilson, 69, of Dakota City died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City, with the Rev. Mike Anderson, pastor of Dakota City United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial, with military rites, will be in Dakota City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Wilson was born Nov. 14, 1928, in Homer, Neb., the son of George H. and Ruby (Appleton) Wilson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy.

He married Eunice M. Nottleman in South Sioux City. He was a former police officer for the city of Homer. He was employed as a brakeman with Burlington Northern Railroad for 39 years.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 376 of Dakota City and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was active with 4-H programs in Homer.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, David L. and Karen of Kimball, Neb.; two daughters, Jeanie Wilson of Blair, Neb. and Joyce Wilson of Dakota City; two brothers, George and his wife Donna of Mitchell, S.D. and Jim of Minnesota; three sisters, Betty Wagner of South Sioux City, Barb and her husband Charles Lemon and Shirley and her husband Roger Bentz, all of Homer; and nine grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Melva Wilson.

Leonard Bruggeman
WAKEFIELD, Neb. - Leonard Bruggeman, 80, of Wakefield died Thursday at the Wayne Care Centre in Wayne, Neb.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Carroll, Neb. Burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Schumacher Funeral Home in Wayne.

Ronald E. Carmichael
EMMETSBURG, Iowa - Ronald E. Carmichael, 80, of Emmetsburg, formerly of Mallard, Iowa, died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg, with the Rev. David Crow officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 4 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Carmichael was born May 11, 1917, in Rush Lake Township, Mallard, Iowa, the son of H.R. "Ray" and Pearl (Hahn) Carmichael. He graduated from Mallard High School and Emmetsburg Junior College, where he played basketball.

He married Gwen Thompson on June 21, 1941, in Mallard. He farmed in the Mallard area. They moved to Emmetsburg in 1970, where he continued to farm.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bob of Storm Lake, Iowa, and Dr. John of Reno, Nev.; a daughter, Joyce Higley of Folsom, Calif.; six grandchildren; a step-grandchild; three step great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ruel of Mallard.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sharon.

Pallbearers will be Bob, John and Brent Carmichael, Jack and John Ronald Higley, Paul Birie and Keith Harnden.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimers Foundation.

Mildred B. Farmer
LE MARS, Iowa - Mildred Blanche Farmer, 81, of Le Mars died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Hinton United Methodist Church in Hinton, Iowa, with the Rev. Sara Malone officiating. Burial will be in Floyd Valley Cemetery at rural Hinton. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mrs. Farmer was born near Merrill, Iowa, the daughter of William and Blanche (Green) Spies. She graduated from Merrill High School. She married Vernon Farmer on June 8, 1934, in Merrill. He died November 1992.

She was a member of Merrill-Melbourne United Methodist Church and the Women's Missionary Society.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Carol and Bud Albright of Brunsville, Iowa; a son and his wife, William and Connie of Hinton; a brother and his wife, Wayne and Florence Spies of Hinton; two sisters, Ardie and her husband Don Arndt and Norma Hartman, all of Hinton; a brother-in-law and his wife, Kenneth and Henrietta Farmer of Brunsville; five grandchildren, Julie Schultz, Deb Pick, Darin Albright, Bob and Steve Farmer; and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Lenore Philips; a brother, Gordon Spies; a sister-in-law, Pauline Spies; and a brother-in-law, Floyd Hartman.

Pallbearers will be Lanny Schultz, Arlie Pick, Bob and Steve Farmer, Darin Albright and Joe Pick.

Frank Fintzel
SPENCER, Iowa - Frank Fintzel, 81, of Spencer died Wednesday at the Northshire Residence in Spencer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer. Burial will be in Hills of Rest at Sioux Falls, S.D.

Laura M. Harding
WHITING, Iowa - Laura Marie Harding, 66, of Whiting died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital of cancer.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Church of Christ in Whiting, with the Rev. Shawn Walden officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa, Iowa.

Mrs. Harding was born April 4, 1931, in Blencoe, Iowa, the daughter of Hiram "Pop" and Lenore (Holten) Allen. She attended Onawa High School.

She married Leonard Harding on Jan. 17, 1948, in Onawa. They couple lived in Whiting until 1977, when they moved to Washington and Montana. She was employed with IBP and Zenith Corporation for several years before retiring. The couple returned to Whiting in 1995.

She was affiliated with the Church of Christ. She enjoyed garage sales and collecting geese.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Danny and Christine of Burlington, Wash.; a daughter and her husband, Leanne and Daryl Brunson of Whiting; three grandchildren, Billie and Beth McKinney and Misty Harding; five brothers, Arthur of Wellman, Iowa, John and his wife Dorothy of Dextor, Ore., Lloyd and his wife Pat of Kelso, Wash., Joseph "Bud" and his wife Mary of Soldier, Iowa, and Everett and his wife Nancy of Onawa; four sisters, Evelyn Campbell of South Sioux City, Celia Holverson of Whiting, Jessie Allen of Sioux City and Amy and her husband Niles Pierce of Burlington, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Jack, George and Davey; and three sisters, LaVera Osen, Viola Selby and Esther Gregg.

Nellie Kroese
HULL, Iowa - Nellie Kroese, 87, of Hull died Wednesday at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. Burial will be in Hope Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.

Faye Mitchell
ALLEN, Neb. - Faye (Bacon) Mitchell, 94, of Hutchinson, Kan., formerly of Allen, died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 1997, at a Hutchinson hospital.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church in Allen, with the Rev. Nancy Tomlinson officiating. Private burial will be in Eastview Cemetery. Bressler-Humlicek Funeral Home of Wakefield, Neb. is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Mitchell was born Oct. 29 1903, in Mission Hill, S.D., the daughter of Justin S. and Lillian (DeVoe) Bacon. The family moved to South Sioux City. She graduated from South Sioux City High School and Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. She received her masters degree in education from the University of Colorado in Fort Collins, Colo. She taught home economics for many years.

She married Kenrick Mitchell on June 1, 1928, in South Sioux City. The couple moved to Allen in 1933, and then to Hutchinson in October 1991. He died in July 1992.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Church Women and the Eastern Star of Allen. She was an accomplished artist.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Richard and Amy of Hutchinson and Bill and Barbara of Oak Harbor, Wash.; a daughter and her husband, Carol and Ray Pearson of Clemmons, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Dee, Willard and Forrest Bacon.

Memorials may be directed to the K.R. Mitchell Scholarship Fund of Allen High School.

Lawrence Nicolai
SIBLEY, Iowa - Lawrence "Nick" Nicolai, 72, of Spirit Lake, formerly of Sibley, died Wednesday at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Sibley. Burial will be in St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.

Gilbert R. Phillips
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Gilbert R. Phillips, 87, of Ida Grove died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, at the Manning General Hospital in Manning, Iowa.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. Gerald M. Fisch officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today, with a Scripture service at 7 p.m., at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove.

Mr. Phillips was born Feb. 26, 1910, in Franklin, Ind., the son of Thomas and Myrtle (Peregrine) Phillips. The family moved to Ida Grove, where he attended country schools.

He married Fern J. Hamann on July 24, 1929, in Ida Grove. He was employed as a truck driver for many years, then by the Farmer's Co-op, until retiring. She died March 28, 1997.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Gilbert T. and Joan of Manning; a daughter, Greta Tollas of Urbandale, Iowa; four grandchildren, Gail Kotval, Diane Jones, Michael and Steven Phillips; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, James "Jake".

Gerard M. Schmidt
HARTINGTON, Neb. - Gerard "Jerry" M. Schmidt, 38, of Tarkio, Mo., formerly of Hartington, died Wednesday near Rockport, Mo., of injuries suffered in an automobile accident.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington. Burial will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Wintz Funeral Home of Hartington is in charge of the arrangements.

Earl Utesch
LE MARS, Iowa - Earl George Lee Utesch, 74, of Le Mars died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St Paul Lutheran Church in rural Merrill, Iowa, with the Rev. Richard Steffen and the Rev. Robert Grupp officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mr. Utesch was born May 13, 1923, near Brunsville, Iowa, the son of Bert and Lena (Spenus) Utesch. He attended country school in Lincoln Township and later at Merrill High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Dorothy Calhoon on Oct. 25, 1945, in Le Mars. He and his mother-in-law, Nora Calhoon, operated the Westside Cafe in Le Mars for 12 years. In 1952, he began working at McCormack Distributing Company in Le Mars. In 1961, he and Vince Engel purchased McCormack and operated the business until retiring in 1978.

He also attended Brockelman Auctioneering School in Sioux City in 1948. He worked with Oostenink Auction and Realty in Le Mars for several years. He enjoyed collecting and restoring antique cars and tractors.

He served on the Plymouth County Fair Board and was honored by the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce as Citizen of the Year in 1991. He was instrumental in establishing the Christmas Pioneer Village at the Plymouth County Fair Grounds.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Dan and his wife Donna of Akron, Iowa, and Terry of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Diana and Dennis Bixenman of Le Mars; two sisters, Esther Oetken of Le Mars and Vera and her husband Otis Dotson of Germantown, Ohio; a brother and his wife, Harold "Doc" and Marian of Oyens, Iowa; seven grandchildren, Scott, Rob and Jami Bixenman, Lisa Peters, Wesley Reynolds, Pam Anderson and Neal Utesch; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jack; a granddaughter, Shannon Bixenman; his parents; three sisters, Evelyn Wilken, Caroline Aldrich and a sister in infancy; and two brothers, Fred and Walter.

Pallbearers will be Scott and Rob Bixenman, Neal Utesch, Wesley Reynolds, Mike Peters and Kevin Anderson.

Leone Youngers
SHELDON, Iowa - Leone Youngers, 95, of Sheldon died Wednesday at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a St. Patrick's Guild rosary at 7 p.m. and a Scripture wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Herbert Bauer, 69, of Odebolt, Iowa died Thursday; Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home of Odebolt.
