Lois J. Kowalski
Lois J. Kowalski, 64, of Fairview, Ore., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Michael R. Ring, of Glad Tidings Light House, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Friday.
Mrs. Kowalski was born June 27, 1933, in Decatur, Neb., the daughter of Allie and Ida (Zeller) Tranmer. She was raised in Oakland, Neb.
She married Francis C. Freimark on Jan. 6, 1951, in Sioux City. He died April 27, 1971, in Sioux City. She then married Max F. Kellogg on Nov. 3, 1972, in Homer, Neb. He died Jan. 23, 1987, in Sioux City. She married Harold A. Kowalski on Oct. 22, 1987, in Elk Point, S.D.
She was employed as a housekeeper at Holy Spirit Retirement Home from 1977 to 1987, previously she was employed in the kitchen at West Junior High School. She moved to Fairview three years ago.
She was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church in Sioux City and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary in Decatur.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Larry Freimark of Beaverton, Ore. and Dale Freimark of San Jose, Calif.; a daughter and her husband, Teresa and David Slate of Cambridge, Iowa; two brothers, Floyd Tranmer of South Sioux City and Dale Tranmer and his wife, Cindy, of Fremont, Neb.; two sisters, Linda Pinchart of Madison, Wis. and Joyce and her husband Marlo Howard of Ida Grove, Iowa; seven stepchildren; seven grandchildren, Jason, Tina, Tony, Stephanie, Tami, Serene and Alex; and a great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a stepdaughter.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Webster, William Slate, Denny, Bryan and Jacob Tranmer and Jens Bossow.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Myrtle M. Kelsey
Myrtle M. Kelsey, 95, of Sioux City died Thursday at Sunrise Retirement Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Hornick, Iowa. Private burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

A. Helen Hurlburt, 80, of Sioux City, died Friday; Larkin Northside Funeral Home.

Viola Maahs
CHARTER OAK, Iowa - Viola Dorothy Maahs, 85, of Charter Oak died Saturday, June 13, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services were held Wednesday, June 17, 1998. Huebner Funeral Home of Denison, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.
Mrs. Maahs was born Nov. 18, 1912, near Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Marie (Rosburg) Reitz. She was baptized Dec. 29, 1912, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, in Soldier Township, Charter Oak, and confirmed April 10, 1927, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa. She received her education in rural schools in Crawford County and later moved to Colorado where she worked for various fruit farms in the area. She then worked in housekeeping in Omaha, Neb. for a short time.
She married Herman Maahs Oct. 16, 1936, at the Lutheran Parsonage in Elk Point, S.D. The couple lived on several farms in the Charter Oak area before buying a farm northwest of Charter Oak. In 1965, they moved to Charter Oak where they operated the Town and Country Cafe for 10 years. He died in 1987.
She was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Ladies Aid and Ladies Choir. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Senior Center in Charter Oak. She was active in quilting and delivering meals on wheels. She enjoyed vegetable gardening, canning and was fond of her large flower garden. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, playing cards and dancing.
Survivors include three sons and their wives, Richard and Annette Maahs of Sioux City, Robert and Evelyn Maahs of Altus, Okla., and Gary and Sue Maahs of Montgomery, Ala; three daughters and their husbands, Virgina and Dwight Sherburne of Edmonton, Canada, Karen and Dennis Keating of Denver, and Marcia and David Sanchez of Superior, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two brothers and their wives, Eugene and Nancy Reitz of Hacienda, Calif, and Dwayne and Pearl Reitz of Dow City, Iowa; four sisters, Luella and her husband, Douglas Marsh, of Glendale, Calif., Ann Szilagyi of Burbank, Calif., Donna MacDonald of Glendora, Calif., and Beverly and her husband, Bill Ritter, of LaVerne, Calif; a sister-in-law, Elaine Reitz of Charter Oak; a brother-in-law, Carl LaCom of Glendale, Calif.; and many other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by a grandson; four brothers, Andrew, Vernon, Robert, Jr., and Donald Reitz in infancy; and a sister, Marion LaCom.

Henrietta Rinehart
EVERLY, Iowa - Henrietta Julianna Rinehart, 98, of Spencer, Iowa, formerly of Everly, died Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Hope Lutheran Church in Everly, Iowa with the Rev. Tom Reagan officiating. Burial will be in Lone Tree Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Saturday with the family present from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Mrs. Rinehart was born Oct. 5, 1899, in Summit Township, Clay County, Iowa, the daughter of Hans and Hedwig (Moeller) Petersen. She graduated from Everly High School in 1916. After attending Business College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, she worked for the Everly State Bank. She married Frank Oscar Rinehart March 3, 1920, at her parents' farm home near Royal, Iowa. The couple lived on farms near Everly for three years, in Minnesota for three years, and in South Dakota for 16 years. In 1942, they moved to a farm near Everly where they lived until retiring to a home in Everly in 1956. He died in May 1967. She moved to St. Luke Lutheran Home in Spencer in 1991. She taught Sunday school for many years and was a member of the Dorcas Society. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, traveling, playing cards, and dancing.
Survivors include a sister, Edna Koehnk of Everly; eight children, Harold of Highmore, S.D., Betty Williamson of Evansville, Ind, Robert of Baudette, Minn., Marjorie Daniels of Rio Rancho, N.M., Lois Noethe of Storm Lake, Iowa, Lowell of Highmore, S.D., Edith Williams of Sioux City, and Mary Calvert of Walnut Creek, Calif.; 27 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
She was also preceded in death by a son, John Edwin; a daughter, Norma Jean Beals; two sisters, Leona Ihry and Elfrieda Switzer; a brother, Gus Petersen; and a granddaughter, Kathryn Sue Daniels.

Joyce J. Hart
HOMER, Neb. - Joyce J. Hart, 68, of Homer died Thursday, June 18, 1998, at a South Sioux City Nursing Home after a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Paul Lutheran Church with the Rev. Jeanne Dahl officiating. Burial will be in Omaha Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.
Mrs. Hart was born July 29, 1929, in Sioux City, the daughter of George E. and Lena J. (Larson) Jensen. She received her teaching certificate from Wayne State College and taught in area rural schools for several years. She married Harry H. Hart June 11, 1949, in South Sioux City. She was a former 4-H leader, enjoyed gardening, and had entered flower arrangements in competition at local fairs.
She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Homer and the Women of E.L.C.A. She had served as secretary/treasurer of the Sunday school for eighteen years and was the church historian. She was also a member of H.P.D. Extension Club, and a member of the National American Diabetes Association. She was an avid square dancer and also ejoyed round dancing and ballroom dancing.
Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Jeff and Sue Hart of Lincoln, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Wanda and Fred Gay of Homer; two sisters and their husbands, Janet and Francis Kimberly of Millard, Neb., and Selma and Chris Miller of Homer; four grandchildren, Andrea and Cory Hart, Angela Beekman, and Aaron Gay.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bernard Jensen.
Pallbearers will be Ray LaFluer, Lynn Townley, Lynn Miller, Rick Lauritsen, Ron Eriksen, and Dick Miller.

Leonard Matiak
LAWTON, Iowa - Leonard Oscar Matiak, 82, of Lawton died Thursday, June 18, 1998, in Lawton.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Christy, Smith, and Hockenberry Funeral Home with the Rev. Greg Boden officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery in Lawton. Visitation will be 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Maitak was born Feb 28, 1916, in Monroe County, Wis., the son of Anthon and Hilda (Hanson) Matiak. He received his education at Monroe County country school and served in the U.S. Army from October 1940 to November 1941. He lived in LaCrosse, Wis. until moving to Lawton in 1993. He worked in maintenance at Trane Manufacturing in LaCrosse.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Gene and Barbara Matiak of Mark, Ill.; three daughters, Sonya Yurch and her fiance, Richard Thibodeau, of Sioux City, Connie and her husband, Larry A. King, of Lawton, and Linda and her husband, Don McCready, of Waterloo, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sherry Lynn Matiak; and a granddaughter, Brenda Lee King.
Pallbearers will be Brock Young, Rich Remetch, Timothy Thomas, Jay Thomas, Jeff Carlson, and Roger Smith.

Paul B. Milbrodt
MOVILLE, Iowa - Paul B. Milbrodt, 67, of Moville died suddenly Wednesday, June 17, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Morningside Lutheran Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Donohue Sarff officiating. There was no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home in Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Milbrodt was born March 15, 1931, in Akron, Iowa, the son of Herman and Meta (Frerichs) Milbrodt. He was raised in the Akron area. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War aboard the U.S.S. Skagit AKA-105.
He married Helen E. Erickson on Aug. 1, 1951, in Akron. The couple farmed in the Akron, Hinton and Westfield, Iowa areas from 1954 to 1962. They moved to Sioux City in 1982, where he farmed for many years. He was also employed as a truck driver with Joe Rosenthal & Sons at the stockyards. She died July 17, 1983, in Omaha, Neb.
He then married Patricia J. (Androy) Horton on May 20, 1988, in Sioux City. The couple moved to Moville in 1988.
He was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church, the Teamsters Union Local 383, the American Legion Post 724 and the Veterans of Foreign War, both in Brunsville, Iowa, and the Independent Order of Forresters.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and their wives, Matthew and Laurie of Kansas City, Mo. and Mark A. and Carla of Akron; three daughters and their husbands, Paula J. and Luther Thoresen of Ruthven, Iowa, Carla J. and Guy Lennan of Lee's Summit, Mo. and Trish and Larry Jones of Sioux City; four brothers, Henry of Sioux Falls, S.D., George and his wife Marge of Hinton, Iowa, Robert of Sioux City and Charles and his wife Rita of Akron; five sisters, Ruth Heubrook of Hawarden, Iowa, Vera Hansen of Sioux City, Dorothy and her husband Rodney Lane of Meckling, S.D., Mary and her husband John Miller of Rock Valley, Iowa and Edith and her husband James Small of Akron; 14 grandchildren, Benjamin, Jessica and Alena Thoresen, Leah, Nathan, Sara, Cody, Christopher, Eric and Shawn Milbrodt, Skyler, Jordan and Cady Lennan and Todd Butters; and a great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by his parents; eight brothers and sisters; and a grandson, Troy Butters.
Pallbearers will be his nieces.
Memorials may be directed to the Brunsville, Iowa, American Legion Post 724.

Lucille E. Ross
AKRON, Iowa - Lucille E. Ross, 96, of Tiffin, Iowa, formerly of Akron died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wesley United Methodist Church in Akron. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday with an Eastern Star service by Vesper Chapter O.E.S. at 7 p.m. at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Albert Schluter
PENDER, Neb. - Albert Schluter, 97, of Pender died Thursday at Pender Community Hospital in Pender.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Pender. Burial will be in St. Mark's Cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Munderloh Funeral Home in Pender.

Virgie V. Hanson
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Virgie V. Hanson, 86, of Cherokee, formerly of Meriden, Iowa, died Thursday at Country Side Estates following a short illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday with a family prayer service at 9:45 a.m. at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee. Burial will be in Meriden Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 9 p.m. today and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family present in the afternoon and evening at Boothby Funeral Home.

Ellen M. Savery
MOORHEAD, Iowa - Ellen Margaret Savery, 87, of Moorhead died Friday at Burgess Memorial Hospital in Onawa, Iowa.
Services wil be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Moorhead Christian Church in Moorhead. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Pearson Funeral Home in Onawa.
