William E. Bates
William E. Bates, 74, of Sioux City died Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, at his residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William H. Steward and the Rev. Sheryl Ashley officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 9 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mr. Bates was born Dec. 22, 1922, in Aberdeen, S.D., the son of George A. and Nellie (Yeargin) Bates. He was raised in South Dakota and graduated from the University of South Dakota. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the European Theater.

He married Sharon C. Stewart on June 2, 1946, in Aberdeen. He had lived in Sac City, Iowa and Mitchell, S.D., before moving to Sioux City in 1960. He was employed as a salesman with Armour and Company for 18 years and with IBP for six years. He was the co-owner and manager of M & B By-Products Company in Le Mars, Iowa until his recent retirement.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, where he served on the administrative board and the board of trustees, the Men's Club, the Mr. and Mrs. Club and served as an usher for 20 years. He was also a member of the Morningside American Legion Post 697 and served as a Webelo's Scout Master.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Carleton and Warren, both of Magnolia, Minn. and Warren and his wife Becky of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Lauralee and Larry Johnson of Forest Lake, Minn.; 11 grandchildren, Chayden, Justin, Laura, David, Matthew, Timothy, Samuel, Kathlenn, Thomas, Ryan and Elizabeth; two great-grandsons; a brother and his wife, Robert and Beryl of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Harlan; and a grandchild, Jamie.

Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church or the American Cancer Society.

John D. Bradley
John D. "Jack" Bradley, 69, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Sioux City, died of cancer Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, at the McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls. Burial will be in Hills of Rest Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Bradley was born June 8, 1928, in Sioux Falls, the son of Donald and Hazel (Samelson) Robertson. He was raised in Sioux Falls and graduated from Washington High School in 1946. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and the Korean War. He operated a motorcycle delivery service. He moved to Gary, Ind. in 1953, where he was employed as a manager with Frank Shoes. He then moved to Sioux City and began his 28 year employment with Brown Shoe Company.

He married Edith Sheldon on May 12, 1961, in Luverne, Minn. the couple made their home in Sioux City. In 1974, they moved to Salt Lake City, where he managed several retail departments of the Brown Shoe Company. He retired in 1990, and returned to Sioux Falls. Following his retirement, he worked as a tire salesman with Sears and for the Sioux Falls Auto Auction in Tea, S.D.

He was a member of Sunnycrest United Methodist Church, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was a past president of the Utah Conpor. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, where he served as president of the Utah State Moose Association, the Legion of the Moose, 25 Club and 50 Club. He received his Fellowship degree in 1979 and his Pilgrim Degree of Merit in June 1985. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and sports.

Survivors include his wife; four sons and their wives, Mike and Kim Shipley of Sioux Falls, Charlie and Stephanie Shipley of Paonia, Calif., Van and Judy Archenbrenner of Arvada, Colo. and Stanley and Twila Shipley of Salt Lake City; four daughters, Laurie and her husband Glen Swanson of Hastings, Neb., Barbara and her husband Paul Crapo and Kathy Novosel, all of Salt Lake City and Sandy and her husband Russell Thompson of Sioux Falls; a brother and his wife, Tom and Luz Robertson of Spearfish, S.D.; 16 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Lucille M. McGowen
Lucille Marie McGowen, 79, of Iowa City, formerly of Sioux City, died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at her residence following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Iowa City, with the Rev. James Vrba officiating. Burial will be at 4 p.m. Tuesday in St. Anne's Cemetery at Dixon, Neb. George L. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorian of Iowa City is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. McGowen was born Oct. 21, 1918, in Sioux City, the daughter of Herman Joseph and Julia (Hirschmann) Sorensen. She married Anthony "Tony" Richard McGowen on June 17, 1936, in Dixon. During World War II, she was employed as a mail carrier.

She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Michael Thomas and Gloria Jean of Omaha, Neb.; two daughters, Sister Mary Hugh McGowen of St. Louis, Mo. and Jacqueline Anne and her husband John Asmussen of Bronson, Iowa; three sisters, Lorene Myers, Leona Pelechek and Lois Seemuth, all of Iowa City; a brother, Leo Sorensen of South Pasadena, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband.

Memorials may be directed to the Iowa City Hospice.

LeRoy F. Moberg
LeRoy F. Moberg, 69, of Sioux City died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at his sister's residence following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Susan Miller, chaplain at Hospice of Siouxland, officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Moberg was born Feb. 7, 1928, in Sioux City, the son of Carl E. and Mabel L. (Larson) Moberg. He was employed with several dry goods stores and retired from Ace Dry Good Store.

He was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include two sisters, Mildred Schweitzer of Las Vegas and Dorothy and her husband Clifford Humphrey of Sioux City; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Delmar Moberg.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.

Aime Moulton
Aime Moulton of Sioux City died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. E.D. Pappadackis officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Moulton was born in Gordon, Neb., the daughter of Charles and Selma Nydahl. She attended country school in Rushville, Neb.

She married Harold Moulton Sr. in 1933, in Hot Springs, S.D. She was a homemaker, who enjoyed working in the garden. He died Dec. 29, 1994.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Harold "Pat" Jr. and Delores of Sioux City; a daughter and her husband, Patricia and Gary Bryne of Sioux City; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Algot and Max; and five sisters, Olga, Nellie, Effie, Lillian and Marjorie.

Margaret Nassiff, 62, of Sioux City died Sunday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Frank Thompson, 67, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 1997; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Les Auen
DENISON, Iowa - Les Auen, 84, of Denison died Saturday at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at United Presbyterian Church in Denison. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present from 3 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison.

Gretchen Birchard
SPENCER, Iowa - Gretchen Birchard, 58, of Spencer died Friday at Spencer Municipal Hospital.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Henry Boone
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Henry Boone, 93, of Orange City, formerly of Woodbine, Iowa, died Sunday at the Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at American Reformed Church in Orange City. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitaiton will be after 4 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Bertha N. Christensen
LAWTON, Iowa - Bertha N. Christensen, 77, of Lawton died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at the Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Jackson, pastor of Bethel Lutheran Church in Lawton, officiating. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Christensen was born April 17, 1920, in Luton, Iowa, the daughter of Earl and Goldie (Bloomer) Mercer. She was raised in the Luton area.

She married Louis P. Christensen on Dec. 31, 1941, in Dakota City. He died Dec. 9, 1982, in Sioux City. She was employed as a sewing instructor and salesperson with Singer Sewing Machine Company for 20 years.

She was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Lawton, where she taught Sunday School for many years and the Lawton P.T.A.

Survivors include two sons, Louis P. of Oxnard, Calif. and Donald and his wife Jolene of Omaha; two daughters and their husbands, Judith and Curtis Forst and Gayle and John Brennan, all of Omaha; four grandchildren, Stephanie H. Savoy, Amber C. Forst, Derek A. and Seth R. Christensen; a brother and his wife, Lloyd and Lorraine Mercer of Canton, S.D.; and a brother-in-law and his wife, Ernest and Margaret Christensen of Sioux City.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Elizabeth Cleveland.

Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Dorothy J. Glover
LAWTON, Iowa - Dorothy J. "Babe" Glover, 73, of Lawton died Sunday at a Sioux City hospital.

Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Lawton Community Presbyterain Church. Burial will be in Banner Township Cemetery. A prayer service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at McCulloch Chapel in Moville, Iowa.

SPENCER, Iowa - Harold H. Howe, 88, of Spencer died Saturday at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minn.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Congregational Church in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Lois Salton
RUTHVEN, Iowa - Lois Salton, 79, of Ruthven died Sunday at the Ruthven Care Center.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church in Ruthven. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer, Iowa.

Margaret Van Briesen
GEORGE, Iowa - Margaret Van Briesen, 88, of George died Saturday at the George Good Samaritan Center.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Central Baptist Church in George. Burial will be in Evergreen Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present at 7 p.m., at the Bolin Funeral Home in George.

Lois Westra
SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - Lois Westra, 45, of Sioux Center died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, in Crookston, Minn.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Christian Reformed Church in Sioux Center, with the Rev. Robert Drenten officiating. Burial will be at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at Memorial Funeral Home in Sioux Center.

Mrs. Westra was born Aug. 16, 1952, in Orange City, Iowa, the daughter of Lambert and Wilma (Dykstra) Bouma. She attended Christian School in Hull, Iowa and graduated from Western Christian High School. She attended nursing school in Sioux Falls, S.D., graduating as a licenced practical nurse.

She married Verlyn Westra on May 12, 1972, in Hull. The couple lived in Sioux Center for three years, where she was employed at Sioux Center Community Hospital. In 1975, they moved to a farm near Middleburg, Iowa.

She was a member of Bethel Christian Reformed Church, serving as a Calvinette counselor and youth leader. She enjoyed refinishing furniture and videotaping special events.

Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Brent and Dawn of Sioux Center and Kevin and Roma of Coralville, Iowa; two daughters, Krista of Orange City and Julie of Sioux Falls; her parents of Hull; and a brother, Owen Bouma of Highland, Ind.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Mary.

Pallbearers will be Brent, Kevin, Krista, Julie, Dawn and Roma Westra, Adam Van Meeteren and Troy Jansma.

Martha Zwart
GEORGE, Iowa - Martha Zwart, 83, of George died Sunday at the George Good Samaritan Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church in rural Boyden, Iowa. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. today at the Bolin Funeral Home in George.
