Hazel W. Hawthorn
Hazel Waples Hawthorn, 104, of Sioux City died Monday, April 20, 1998, the the Countryside Retirement Home in Sioux City.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. William H. Steward and the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley officiating. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. today in Center Township Cemetery, near Castana, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Hawthorn was born July 21, 1893, in Castana, the daughter of Wm. Henry Jr. and Nora (Livengood) Waples. She graduated from Castana High School and Morningside College. She also studied at Iowa State College, now ISU, and the University of Wisconsin. She taught in public schools in Castana, Sergeant Bluff and Sioux City for many years.

She married Horace B. Hawthorn on Sept. 21, 1916, in Castana. The couple lived in Madison, Wis., Ames, Iowa, Akron, Ohio, Castana as well as Sioux City following their teaching careers. He died Feb. 17, 1981, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Rebekah Circle, Goodwill Auxiliary, American Association of University Women, The Retired Teachers, Morningside Garden Club, Castana Thursday Club, Castana American Legion Auxiliary and the Zeta Tau Alpha Sorority.

Survivors include two daughters, Miriam Baker Nye of Moville, Iowa and Clarice Watson of Eugene, Ore.; a son and his wife, Duane and Charlotte Hawthorn of Sioux City; a brother, Eldon Waples of Castana; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Violet and Beulah Waples; a brother, Clair Waples; two granddaughters, Barbara and Paulette Hawthorn; and a son-in-law, Dr. John A. Nye.

Memorials may be directed to Grace United Methodist Church.

Joseph Fazio Sr.
Joseph A. Fazio Sr., 85, of Flushing, N.Y., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, at his residence of massive heart failure.
Services were held Thursday, April 16, at St. Sabestians Roman Catholic Church in Woodside, N.Y., where Rev. Grande officiated. Burial was in St. Raymond Cemetery at Bronx, N.Y. Kennedy-Roth Funeral Home of Woodside was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Fazio was born March 1, 1913, in Sicily, Italy. He graduated from New York University Pressman. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945, where he was the Seventh Fleet's Golden Gloves Boxing Champion.

He married Josephine Amorello on June 30, 1940, in Long Island, N.Y. She died Oct. 26, 1986, in Woodside. He had lived in Woodside from 1962 to 1990, when he moved to Sioux City. He returned to Woodside in 1993 and moved to Flushing in 1998.

He was employed with Parkname Plate from 1930 until entering the service. Following his discharge, he returned to Parkname Plate, retiring in 1978.

He was a member of St. Sabestian's Roman Catholic Church, the Youth Group at the church and Holy Name Society. He was the weightlifting champion for New York state in his youth.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Joseph Jr. and Gloria (Holmes) Fazio of Sioux City; five grandchildren, Michelle Warren, Samatha Davis, Shannon Scofield, Timothy "T.J." and Ronald Fazio; eight great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Donald Fazio.

Pallbearers were Kennedy-Roth Professional Pallbearers.

Memorials may be directed to the St. Sabestian's Youth Center.

Joseph D. Schuetz
Joseph D. Schuetz, 56, of Bethesda, Md., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, April 11, 1998, following a brief illness.
Services were held Thursday, April 16, at St. Jane Frances de Chantel Church in Bethesda.

Mr. Schuetz was born Aug. 5, 1941, in Minnesota, the son of Joseph J. and Justina (Goergen) Schuetz. He attended St. Boniface Grade School and graduated from Heelan High School, both in Sioux City and attended Marquette University.

He was employed as a writer of technical manuels for the military and recently as a real estate agent in the Washington D.C. area.

He married Barbara Schmidt on Nov. 19, 1966, in Sharon, Penn.

He was a member of St. Jane Frances de Chantel Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, David John and his wife Andrea of Centerville, Va. and Bryan Joseph of Bethesda; a daughter, Dr. Laura Janene Schuetz of Norfolk, Va.; his mother of Sioux City; five brothers; and five sisters.

He was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Kathleen Port.

Virginia M. Flaugh
Virginia Mae Flaugh, 71, of Sioux City died of Amytrothic Lateral Sclerosis Tuesday, April 21, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sheryl K. Ashley and the Rev. William H. Steward officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the church. Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Flaugh was born May 21, 1926, in Edgerton, Wis., the daughter of Ray and Dorothy (McCord) Evans. She graduated from Neligh High School in Neligh, Neb. and Morningside College in Sioux City.

She married Oliver Flaugh in Little Rock, Ark., divorcing in 1976. He died May 23, 1979, in Sioux City.

She had lived in Sioux City for 40 years, with a short term teaching assignment in Alaska during the 1989/90 school year, returning to Sioux City.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Chapter 502 Order of the Eastern Star, where she was a past Matron, the Daughters of the Nile, the Shrine Auxiliary and the South Sioux City Eagles Club.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Keith and Karen of Marco Island, Fla. and Gregory and Kevin Anne of New Orleans, La.; a daughter and her husband, Deborah and Jack Barger of Hooper, Neb.; five grandchildren, Aimee Brinson, Kathryn and Marc Flaugh, Regina and Dylan Rohde; her special friend, Art Kahler of Sioux City; and two half brothers, Duane Evans of Sacramento, Calif. and Dwight Evans of Camarillo, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Robert Evans.

Pallbearers will be Dwight Evans, Marc Flaugh, Dylan Rohde, Ward Butcher, Chuck Swan, Jerry Kahler and Jack Barger.

Memorials may be directed to the Amytrothic Lateral Sclerosis Association.

Winifred B. Miller
Winifred B. Miller, 81, of Sioux City died Monday, April 20, 1998, in Cuero, Texas following a brief illness.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery, with the Rev. David Sowers, of Morningside Baptist Church, officiating. Visitation will be from 3 to 8:30 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Mrs. Miller was born Sept. 9, 1916, in Sioux City, the daughter of William and Bernice (Southworth) Altimus.

She married Robert T. Miller on April 13, 1943, in Elk Point, S.D. She was employed with S.S. Kresge Five and Dime Store and with Wincharger Corporation for several years.

She was a member of Morningside Baptist Church and a former member of Chapter 502 Morningside Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband; three sons and their wives, Robert W. and Florence of Cuero, Texas, Ted E. and Darla of Sioux City and Thomas J. and Lois of McAllen, Texas; two sisters, Darlene Carlson of Sioux City and Wilma Statler of Orchard, Neb.; 10 grandchildren, Tom Jr., Randy, Sandy, Jody, Barbara, Susan, Timothy, Matthew, Patti and Toni; 23 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Evelyn Hauser, Vivian Hoover and Ethel Altimus; five brothers, Clyde Grimes and Robert, Edward, Charles and Elroy Altimus; and a grandchild, Rebecca.

Memorials may be directed to the Mexican Indian Training Center in Shreveport, La.

Ethel E. Matthews
Ethel E. Matthews, 90, of Sioux City died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the Embassy Care Center in Sergeant Bluff.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Daniel M. Greving, associate pastor, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Larkin Morningside Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Matthews was born March 22, 1908, in Vermillion, S.D., the daughter of Samuel and Rebecca (Hemmings) Bursell. She was raised in Chambers, Neb. and moved to Sioux City in 1926.

She married John F. Matthews on April 25, 1929, in Spencer, Iowa. She was employed with Cudahy Packing Company and then in the diet kitchen of St. Joseph Hospital. He died March 26, 1954, in Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Patricia and Trino Calvillo of Sioux City and Donna and Mike Watkins of West Des Moines; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by eight brothers, Charles, Sam, William, Jack, Alfred, Herbert, Lyman and Fred Bursell; and four sisters, Della Armstrong, Mae Baker, Mary Farewell and Jane Hansen.

Memorials in her name may be directed to the Eduction Endowment Fund for Immaculate Conception School.

Pallbearers will be Patrick and Matthew Watkins, Michael Calvillo, John Staber, Michael Parezo and Richard Hulce.

Charles W. Crawford
Charles W. Crawford, 76, of Sioux City died Wednesday, April 22, 1998.
Memorial services will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. A. Pete Petersen officiating. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Memorial Park Cemetery. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Crawford was born April 15, 1922, in Sioux City, the son of Harvey F. and Ella (Snyders) Crawford. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Carolyn "Elaine" Wanders on June 18, 1950, in Sioux City. He was employed with the U.S. Post Office, retiring in 1988. She died Aug. 12, 1996, in Sioux City.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Linda and Nelson Oostenink of Aurora, Colo. and Tracy and Chad Porter of Sioux City; a sister, Iona Babcock of Vancouver, Wash.; and a granddaughter, Cynthia Oostenink.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters.

Memorials may be directed to Immanuel Lutheran Church.

James J. Carter
James John "Jay" Carter, 78, of South Sioux City died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Becker-Hunt Funeral Home, with the Rev. Philip J. Olsen, pastor of Tri-State Christian Church, officiating. There will be a flag presentation at the funeral home conducted by the American Legion Post 307. Family graveside services will be at a later date in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 8:30 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Carter was born June 29, 1919, in Oklahoma City, Okla., the son of James L. and Pearl A. (Musgrove) Carter. He was raised in South Sioux City and graduated from South Sioux City High School.

He married Mildred F. Fritz on Oct. 4, 1941, in South Sioux City. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 8th Army Division during World War II as a B-17 pilot. He was employed with Burlington Northern Railroad for 39 years, retiring in 1979. The couple then moved to California and returned to South Sioux City in 1989.

He was a member of Tri-State Christian Church and the American Legion Post 307.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Douglas Jay and Linda K. of South Sioux City; two sisters and their husbands, Vivian and Gene Popejoy of Omaha, Neb. and Tina and Sol Fuss of Fisher, Texas; two grandsons, Rodney J. and Gregory R. Carter; and three great-grandchildren.

Audrey E. Cadwallader
HUBBARD, Neb. - Audrey E. Cadwallader, 72, of Hubbard died Thursday, April 23, 1998, at the Walker's Colonial Manor in South Sioux City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hubbard, with the Rev. Michael Printy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. today at the Munderloh Funeral Home in Emerson, Neb. Visitation will resume at 4 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at the church.

Mrs. Cadwallader was born Jan. 10, 1926, in rural Bancroft, Neb., the daughter of John and Mary (Mahler) Blair. She moved with her family to Hubbard when she was a child. She attended Hubbard Public School.

She married Thomas "Bud" Cadwallader on Oct. 5, 1946, in Jackson, Neb. The couple farmed for 25 years before moving into Hubbard in 1973. They had also lived in Niobrara, Neb. for three years. He died Dec. 6, 1989. She was a homemaker, babysitter and seamstress. She enjoyed sewing and quilting.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Dale and Sandie of Emerson and Gary and Dixie of Concord, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Ruth and Lyle Greenough of Waterbury, Neb.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Dale, Myron, Alton and Leo.

Jennie Kooistra
INWOOD, Iowa - Jennie Kooistra, 92, of Inwood died Thursday at the Fellowship Village in Inwood.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Christian Reformed Church in Inwood. Burial will be in Richland Cemetery. Visitation will be today until 5:30 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Inwood. Visitation with the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the church Fellowship Hall.

Darlene Alexander
SIBLEY, Iowa - Darlene Alexander, 69, of Sibley died Wednesday at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley of injuries suffered in an automobile accident near Sibley.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Sibley. Burial will be in Holman Township Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Walton, Roste and Vogel Funeral Home in Sibley.

Ruth Fleer
WAYNE, Neb. - Ruth Fleer, 86, of Wayne, Neb. died Wednesday at the Oaks Retirement Community in Wayne.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Wayne. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Schumacher Funeral Home in Wayne.

Roland Hach
SPENCER, Iowa - Roland Hach, 68, of Spencer died Wednesday at the Clarinda Hospital in Clarinda, Iowa.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Warner Chapel in Spencer. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon today at the Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.

Lois A. Borchers
SENEY, Iowa - Lois A. Borchers, 73, of Seney died Wednesday, April 22, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in Le Mars, Iowa, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Mrs. Borchers was born June 26, 1924, near Peterson, Iowa, the daughter of John and Freida (Johannson) Stabelfeld. She graduated from Brook Consolidated School in rural Buena Vista County, in 1942. She then attended the National Business Training School in Sioux City.

She married August Borchers on Sept. 23, 1947, in Sioux City. The couple moved to a farm near Le Mars in 1948 and later moved to Seney in 1978. She was employed as a income tax preparer for several years. He died May 1, 1992. She enjoyed playing cards, crossword puzzles and baking.

Survivors include two sons, Gary of Le Mars and Randal and his wife Jo Ann of Omaha, Neb.; a daughter and her husband, Kathy and Denny Hargens of Le Mars; 11 grandchildren, Justin, Jason, James, John and B.J. Borchers, Jason, Kristina, Mike and Shari Hargens, Nathan and Breanna Weise; a sister, Virginia Wells of Porterville, Calif.; two brothers and their wives, Elvin and Donna Stabelfeld of Storm Lake, Iowa and Glen and Jo Stabelfeld of Hughson, Calif.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Pallbearers will be James, John, B.J., and Justin Borchers, Jason and Mike Hargens.

Arnold W. Rongstad
SUTHERLAND, Iowa - Arnold W. Rongstad, 81, of Pharr, Texas, formerly of Sutherland and Larrabee, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 21, 1998, at the Columbia Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Sutherland United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dean O. McPherson officiating. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery at Larrabee, with military rites conducted by the Sutherland American Legion Post 152. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee, Iowa.

Mr. Rongstad was born Jan. 4, 1917, in Highwater Township, Cottonwood County, Minn., the son of Christian and Ida (Aune) Rongstad. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended elementary school in Highwater Township and graduated from Lamberton, Minn. High School in 1936, where he played baseball and basketball. He was employed at a butcher shop in Slayton, Minn.

He served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in England from 1942 to 1945. His awards and ribbons include the ETO Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

He married Lila Mae Wedge on June 2, 1942, in Camp Roberts, Calif. Following his discharge, the couple moved to Cherokee, where he was a butcher and meat department manager for Council Oak Grocery Store. They later farmed near Larrabee. In 1953, they moved to a farm near Sutherland and he drove a school bus. He retired from farming and moved into Sutherland in the late 1970s. He was employed with Sutherland Farmer's Co-op and served as a volunteer fireman. The couple moved to Pharr in 1985. She died May 18, 1996.

He was a member of Sutherland and Larrabee United Methodist Churches, St. Mark's Methodist Church in McAllen, Texas and the Sutherland American Legion Post 152. He served as the Sunday School superintendent of Larrabee United Methodist Church. He coached Little League baseball in Sutherland. He also sang in the church choirs, a men's quartet and the Cherokee men's chorus.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Robert A. and Jone of Cantril, Iowa; a daughter and her husband, Elizabeth Ann and Kay Hutchinson of Delavan, Kan.; two granddaughters, Alison and Rachel Rongstad; two stepgrandsons, Kirk and Mark Hutchinson; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; three brothers, Alver N. "Butch" of Kirkland, Wash., Stan R. and his wife Kathryn of Fergus Falls, Minn. and Chad and his wife Eunice of Sun City, Ariz.; two sisters, Viola Johnson of Lamberton, Minn. and Alpha and her husband Alvin Runck of Springfield, Minn.; a sister-in-law, Ardys Rongstad of Montevideo, Minn.; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Ann (Ingeswick) Rongstad; an infant son, James Arnold; and a brother, Reuben.

Helen M. Carl
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Helen M. Carl, 76, of Storm Lake died Wednesday, March 18, 1998, at her winter home in Peoria, Ariz., following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, at United Methodist Church in Storm Lake. There will be no visitation. The Fratzke Funeral Home of Storm Lake is in charge of local arrangements.

Adeline Jensen
LARCHWOOD, Iowa - Adeline Jensen, 75, of Larchwood died Thursday at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at United Church of Christ in Larchwood. Burial will be at approximately 3:45 p.m. Monday in Valley View Cemetery at Rock Valley, Iowa. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Larchwood.

Mary T. Kneip
OYENS, Iowa - Mary T. Kneip, 65, of Oyens died Thursday at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Sunday, with a rosary at 4 p.m. and a scriptural wake service at 7:30 p.m, at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars.

Richard Hanson
SCHALLER, Iowa - Richard Hanson, 71, of Schaller died Wednesday at the Buena Vista County Hospital in Storm Lake, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Schaller. Burial will be in Schaller Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today at the Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Schaller.
