Ferne Christiansen
Ferne Christiansen, 87, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, in Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Richard Rechichar officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 10 a.m. today at the funeral home.

Miss Christiansen was born May 18, 1910, in Harlan, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Minnie (Madden) Christiansen. She graduated from high school in Walnut, Iowa. She moved to Sioux City when she was 20 years old.

She was a member of Seventh Day Adventist.

Survivors include a nephew, Roger Adair of Ute, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and a brother.

Daniel D. Norton Sr.
Daniel D. Norton Sr., 60, of Palm Springs, Calif., formerly of Sioux City, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, in Palm Springs following a lengthy illness.
The body was cremated. Burial will be at a later date.

Mr. Norton was born Jan. 29, 1938, the son of Raymond E. and Ann (O'Gorman) Norton. He attended Sioux City schools. He served in the U.S. Navy.

He was a longtime teamster and worked for many trucking firms in Sioux City.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Daniel and Shelly of Sioux City; three daughters, Victoria Norton of Sioux City, Ann Marie Salter and Mary Frances Norton, both of Palm Springs; a brother and his wife, Raymond and Gloria of Sioux City; six grandchildren, Shad, Nickolas, Brandon, Kris, Tiffany and Keri; and four nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mary C. Gould
Mary Catherine Gould, 81, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel, with the Rev. Martha Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Gould was born Aug. 7, 1916, in Sioux City. She was raised by her grandmother, Catherine Maxwell. She married Goerge Gould on May 6, 1936, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Rustin Avenue United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Williard and his wife Mary Roberta of Alamgordo, N.M. and Cecil of Indian Springs, Nev.; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two half sisters, Frances Oltman of Stout, Iowa and Mabel Koerner of Sioux Falls, S.D.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Williard Smith, Alfred and Franklin Holmvik.

Pallbearers will be Larry McCaslen, Ed Nelson, Hugh Koerner, Dale Olson, Jerry Grinstead and Derrick Davis.

Hubert Tott Jr.
Hubert Tott Jr., 70, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Sioux City, with the Rev. Lawrence McCarty officiating. Burial will be in St. Johns Cemetery at Jackson, Neb. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m., a rosary at 7:30 p.m. said by the Knights of Columbus and a Scripture service at 8 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mr. Tott was born May 17, 1927, in Sioux City, the son of Hubert and Nellie (Noteboom) Tott Sr. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II.

He married Catherine M. Magirl on Nov. 17, 1951, in Jackson, Neb. The couple moved to Jackson from Sioux City in 1959. They returned to Sioux City in 1973. He owned and operated Totts Conoco from 1954 until retiring in 1990.

He was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife; five sons, Tom and his wife Kris of Woodbury, Minn., Tim and his wife Paula, Pat and Mike, all of Sioux City, and Bob and his wife Diane of Ames, Iowa; three brothers and their wives, Vernon and Betty and Lester and Marge, all of Sioux City and Harold and Dorothy of Dubuque, Iowa; two sisters, Marie Vaa of Sioux City and Viola and her husband Earl Madsen of Lincoln, Neb.; and nine grandchildren, Jeff, Kayla, Christopher, Daniel, Janel, Kendra, Lorin, Katie and Jacque.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mary; his parents; two brothers, William and Eugene; and three sisters, Nellie Vaugh, Jennie Herbold and Viola Tott.

Bertha I. Johnston
Bertha I. Johnston, 97, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at the Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center following a lengthy illness.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday in Floyd Cemetery, with the Rev. Alex Washington officiating. The body was cremated. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Johnston was born April 16, 1900, in Sioux City, the daughter of Valentine C. and Bertha L. (Schultz) Young. She attended Bancroft School in Sioux City.

She married Admiral Dewey Johnston on Aug. 30, 1918, in Dakota City. He died April 28, 1966, in Sioux City. She was employed with Pelletier's Department Store and then with Younker's Department Store, retiring in 1962.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Alvin and Susan of Seminole, Fla.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by four brothers, Ed Young and Albert, Howard and Harold Young, all in infancy; and three sisters, Grace Warrington, Hazel Lonseth and Mabel Young.

John M. Armijo
John M. Armijo, 55, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital.
The body was cremated. There will be no services or visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Leonard L. Schulz
Leonard L. Schulz, 74, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, in Harlingen, Texas.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, Iowa, with the Rev. Martha Anderson, of Rustin Avenue Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery at Merrill, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125 of Merrill. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mr. Schulz was born March 8, 1923, near Merrill, the son of Luvern A. and Pearl I. (Petersen) Schulz. He attended rural school. He served in the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate during World War II.

He married Helen S. Reusch on Feb. 5, 1947, in Merrill. He was a carpenter for many years. Following his retirement, he assisted her in the operation of Helen's Upholstery Shop. The couple wintered in Texas for the last seven years.

He was a member of the Triangle Lodge 643 A.F & A.M., the Sioux City Consistory, the Abu Bekr Shrine Temple, where he was a past wagon master of the Shrine Camper Unit and a past member of the Shrine Cycle Corps. He was a 50 year member of the American Legion Olson-Halweg Post 125 and the Veterans of Foeign Wars Post 580.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters and their husbands, Kathy and Larry Sponder of Le Mars and Connie and Bob Weenink of Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Dorothy and Wayne Warnock of Merrill; a brother and his wife, Lester "Bud" and Gladys of Merrill; five grandchildren, Amy, Lindsey and Katie Sponder, Misty and Dustin Weenink; a brother-in-law and his wife, Melvin and Gloria Botsford of Nevis, Minn.; and a sister-in-law, Shirley Riley of Le Mars.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dowayne; and a sister, Arlene Botsford.

Larry J. Paterni
Larry J. Paterni, 58, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dr. Allen Call officiating. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service today at the church. A second service will be held Friday at Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa, with the Rev. Kevin Ver Hoeven officiating. Burial will be in Wellsburg Reformed Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Paterni was born Sept. 21, 1939, in Wellsburg, the son of Lenus and Freda (Meyer) Paterni. He moved to Sioux City in 1978, from Waterloo, Iowa. He attended the Gates Business College in Waterloo.

He married Jean Carol Angus. She preceded him in death. He married Sally Hutchinson on Sept. 16, 1978, in Sioux City. He was self-employed as an independent agent for Employers Modern Life. He was a former manager and advertising executive for Park Jefferson. He was also employed with Memorial Park Cemetery and Nelson-Berger Funeral Service in pre-need sales.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Sioux City Magic Club and the Republican Party. He enjoyed auto racing and traveling.

Survivors include his mother of Wellsburg; his ex-wife of Sioux City; a son, Gary Brent of Sioux City; two daughters, Sherry Dean Lewis of Tripoli, Iowa and Sara Ann Paterni of Sioux City; a stepson, Kurt Hutchinson Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Anne Jonas of South Sioux City and Cindy Sue Smith of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Stanley Gene and Peggy of Waterloo; two grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Otto E. Knobloch
LARCHWOOD, Iowa - Otto E. Knobloch, 85, of Rock Rapids, formerly of Larchwood, died unexpectedly Monday at the Luverne (Minn.) Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. today at Apostolic Christian Church in Lester, Iowa. Burial will be in Apostolic Christian Cemetery. Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids is in charge of the arrangements.

Lee L. Pry
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Lee Leonard Pry, 75, of Correctionville died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Church of Christ in Correctionville, with the Rev. Elmer Hodge officiating. Burial will be in Willow Township Cemetery at Holly Springs, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Mumford-Moon Post 79 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Monahan Post 1750, all of Correctionville. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Barker Funeral Home in Correctionville.

Mr. Pry was born May 30, 1922, in Bronson, Iowa, the son of Allen Jackson and Mary Luella (Graham) Pry. He attended school up to the eighth grade. He served in the Armed Forces during World War II stationed in Germeny and France.

He married Betty June Bruner on Feb. 8, 1942, in Sioux City. The couple moved to a farm near Correctionville in 1962, where he farmed until retiring. In 1989, they moved into Correctionville.

He was a member of Church of Christ.

Survivors include his wife; six sons, Allen and his wife Mary of Lawton, Iowa, William and his wife Denise of Milford, Iowa, Roger and his wife Melinda and Kelly and his wife Jenice, all of Bronson, Daniel and his wife Rebecca of Austin, Texas and Keith of Correctionville; four daughters, Joanne Peters of Omaha, Neb., Susan and her husband Jim Verzani of LaVista, Neb., DeAnna and her husband Mark Struck of Council Bluffs, Iowa and Roxanne and her husband Christopher Augeri of LaVista, Neb.; 28 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Cliff of Sioux City and Kenneth and his wife Delores of Commerce City, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Kenneth; a daughter, Louella Pry; a grandson, Kevin Pry; a brother, Glen; and three sisters, Violet Clark, Rosie Tipton and Alice "Dolly" Davis.

Grace M. Leonard
HOLSTEIN, Iowa - Grace Mabel Leonard, 89, of Holstein died Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Holstein following a lengthy illness.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Holstein, with the Rev. Judith A. Piper officiating. Burial will be in Holstein City Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Barker Funeral Home of Holstein is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Leonard was born Nov. 8, 1908, in Lebanon, Mo., the daughter of Emer A. and Mary C. (Barlow) Rector. She moved with her family to Cherokee, Iowa, where she attended rural school. The family later settled in rural Moville, Iowa, where she attended high school.

She married Abraham Leonard on Dec. 22, 1929, in Sioux City. The couple lived on the family farm in Silver Township until she entered the Good Samaritan Center in 1988. He died in 1996.

She was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and a past member of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, Calvin A. of Holstein; two daughters and their husbands, Elaine and Dean Vollmar of Holstein and Mary Jane and Kent Oehm of Denver, Colo.;seven grandchildren, Stephanie, Douglas and Elizabeth Leonard, Kristin and Stacy Vollmar, Teresa Lange and Jeffrey Oehm; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Pauline Wahlberg; and a brother and his wife, Leo and Ida Rector of Holstein.

She was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law, Nancy Leonard; three brothers, Raymond, Ralph and Roy; and two sisters, Audrey Rector and Leone Kaveney.

Rose Buschelman
FORDYCE, Neb. - Rose Buschelman, 99, of Fordyce died Tuesday at the Hartington (Neb.) Nursing Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John the Baptist in Fordyce. Burial will be in St. John the Baptist Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 5:30 p.m. today at the Wintz Funeral Home in Hartington. There will be a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. today at the church. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Carrie B. Stanford
LARRABEE, Iowa - Carrie B. Stanford, 97, of Cherokee, Iowa, formerly of Larrabee, died Tuesday at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, with a family prayer service at 10:15 a.m., at Larrabee United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Cedar Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday, at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Carsten J. Godbersen
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Carsten Johannas Godbersen, 93, of Ida Grove died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, of kidney failure at the Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, with the Rev. John Schauer and the Rev. Andrew Currao officiating. Burial will be in Ida Grove City Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Christensen-Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Friday at the church.

Mr. Godbersen was born Dec. 21, 1904, in Brecklum, Germany, the son of Peter and Johanna (Hinrichsen) Godbersen. He attended school in Germany and came to the United States in 1926. He worked for farmers in the Cushing, Iowa and Ida Grove area.

He married Edith Hemer on June 25, 1935, in Ida Grove. He owned land and farmed in the same area for 70 years, retiring at the age of 76.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and her husband, Virginia and Roy Vinkemeier of White Bear Lake, Minn.; two grandchildren, Robin Dittmann and Robert Vinkemeier; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Hanna Jacobsen of Germany; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Richard, four brothers and five sisters.

Lewis H. Ladehoff
JEFFERSON, S.D. - Lewis H. Ladehoff, 86, of Jefferson died Wednesday in Elk Point, S.D.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home in Sioux City. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

E. Merle Lochner
MERIDEN, Iowa - E. Merle Lochner, 87, of Meriden died Tuesday at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa following a brief illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, with a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m., at Meriden Evangelical Free Church. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Marvin E. Hageman
HINTON, Iowa - Marvin E. "Buck" Hageman, 89, of Hinton died Wednesday at his residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Ernest Groepper
REMSEN, Iowa - Ernest Groepper, 90, of Remsen died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at Foyld Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating assisted by Deacon Allan Weiler. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by the Knights of Columbus, at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Mr. Groepper was born Jan. 29, 1908, in rural Huron, S.D., the son of Adolph and Katie (Rochau) Groepper. He moved with his family to the Remsen area, where he was raised and attended Pleasant Hill School near Remsen. He farmed with his parents on the Pleasant Hill Stock Farm near Remsen.

He married Martha Roling on Jan. 8, 1935, in Remsen. The couple farmed near Remsen for 37 years, retiring and moving into Remsen in 1972.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Luxemburger Brotherhood. He served on the board of directors of the First Trust and Savings Bank in Remsen for several years.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Randy and Linda of Iowa City, Iowa; five daughters and their husbands, Marlene and Bernard Jungers and Karen and Leo Freking, all of Hospers, Iowa, Jean and Edward Bird of South Sioux City, Patricia and John Walker of Mound, Minn. and Renee and Lloyd Krug of Remsen; 30 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Alvin and Kenneth and his wife Kathleen, all of Remsen and Loren and his wife Verna of Kingsley, Iowa; three sisters, Viola Berding of Le Mars, Edna and her husband William Dunne of Kingsley and Alice Shanahan of Dakota City; a brother-in-law, Donald Nester of Marcus, Iowa; and two sisters-in-law, Esther Groepper of Aurora, S.D. and Thelma Dorr of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by a grandson, Mark Jungers; three brothers, Walter, Clarence and Harry; and two sisters, Lillie Nester and Mabel Groepper.

Pallbearers will be Michael Bird, David Freking, Mathew Groepper, Gary and Joseph Jungers and Jeff Krug.

Lydia Ladenthin
LE MARS, Iowa - Lydia (Lang) Ladenthin, 88, of Le Mars died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. Larry Fett officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Ladenthin was born Feb. 22, 1909, in rural Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of Christian Fritz and Ida (Heimgartner) Lang. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended Sioux City Beauty College and operated Lydia's Beauty Shop for 35 years.

She married Herbert Ladenthin on April 10, 1951, in Le Mars. He died March 1, 1983. She entered Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in 1996.

She was a charter member of Grace Lutheran Church, the Sarah Circle and the Joy Ladies. She was the church organist for 60 years. She also was a past member of the National Hairdresser Society, the Sunshine Club and the "8 til Late Club.

Survivors include a brother and his wife, Don and Lois Lang of Le Mars; a brother-in-law and his wife, Harold and Anna Mae Ladenthin of Marcus, Iowa; three sisters-in-law, Viola Lang and Mildred Lang, both of Le Mars and Marjorie Ladenthin of Kingsley, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, Edward and Eldon; and two sisters, Laura and Alvina.

Warren A. Schar
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Warren Alfed Schar, 89, of Rock Rapids died Tuesday, Feb. 17, 1998, at the Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids, with the Rev. Henry Thorberg officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7:30 p.m. conducted by the Border Lodge 406 A.F. and A.M., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Mr. Schar was born March 23, 1908, near Storm Lake, Iowa, the son of Fredrick and Minnie (Rasmussen) Schar. He was raised near Storm Lake and graduated from Truesdale High School in 1926. He completed courses from DeVry Institute in Chicago, Ill. In 1928, he was employed with Northwestern Bell Telephone Company, first as a telephone lineman and installer until being assigned to head the Hull, Rock Valley and Doon, Iowa telephone offices. In 1967, he managed the office in Rock Rapids.

He married Ruth Baumgaertner on Nov. 28, 1939, in George, Iowa. The couple lived in Hull until 1968, when they moved to Rock Rapids. He retired from the telephone company in 1973.

He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Lions Club, the Rotary Club, the Kwanis Club, the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and the Abu Bekr Shrine. He volunteered his time to the Telephone Pioneers Association to deliver and repair talking library machines to the sight impaired.

Survivors include his wife; three children, Stephen and his wife Ann of Columbia, S.C., Curtis and his wife Laura of Rock Rapids and Madelon Schar of Beloit, Wis.; four grandchildren, Daniel, Pamela, Matthew and Kara Schar; and two sisters and their husbands, Doris and Blair Rossow of Panora, Iowa and Barbara and Tom Elliot of Slater, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, Bill, Art and Wendell.

Kenneth G. Hinman
CROFTON, Neb. - Kenneth G. Hinman, 81, of Crofton died Tuesday at his residence.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton. Burial will be in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

NEWCASTLE, Neb. - Brother John McClusky, 85, a member of the Society of Mary (Marianists), of California and Hawaii, formerly of Newcastle, died Monday in Cupertino, Calif.
Visitation will begin at 5:30 p.m. today at Star of the Sea Church in San Francisco, Calif. Mass of Resurrection will be at 7 p.m. today at the church. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday in Gate of Heaven Cemetery Cemetery at Los Altos, Calif.
