Robert L. Brooks
Robert L. "Bob" Brooks, 63, formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Jan. 29, 1998, in McAllen, Texas after a lengthy illness.
Memorial services were held in Donna, Texas, and will also be held later in Sioux City and Minneapolis.
Mr. Brooks was born Jan. 23, 1935. He was raised in Sioux City by his mother and stepfather, Harry and Ada (Burright) Wilson, and attended local public schools. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1952 to 1956. He was employed at Ralston Purina in Sioux City from 1957 to 1982 and was then transferred to the plant in Minneapolis where he worked until ill health forced his retirement.
He was member of the Toastmasters and of the Independent Order of Foresters, holding many offices including High Chief Ranger.
He chaired the board of Condominium Corp., his residence in Minneapolis, and was in charge of activities for the retirement park in Donna, Texas where he lived during the winter months.
Survivors include his wife, Mary; three daughters, Vikki and her husband, Mike Sabasta, of Sioux City, Brenda and her husband, Frank Davis, of Richmond, Va., and Theresa Thompson of Brooklyn Park, Minn.; two sons, Donald Brooks of Chesterfield, Va., and Michael Coffin of Sheldon, Iowa; three sisters, Marge and her husband, Don Comstock, Beverly and her husband, Richard Krueger, and Jackie Becke, all of Sioux City; 12 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Dean Brooks; two sisters, Leila Gagnon, and Darlene Marsh.
Florence C. Campbell
Florence C. Campbell, 75, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Community Gym in Santee, Neb. Burial will be in Holy Faith Cemetery in Lindy, Neb. Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at St. Paul's Indian Mission, and at 1 p.m. Monday with a prayer service at 8 p.m. at the Community Gym in Santee. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel in Sioux City is in charge of the arrangements.
Tami Jo Saul
Tami Jo Saul, 43, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Friday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Paul's Indian Mission. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Evelyn Learned
Evelyn Learned, 83, of Sioux City died Friday Feb. 20, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital after a brief illness.
Services will be at 6 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel with the Rev. Philip Rohler, pastor, First Covenant Church officiating. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be at 4 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Evelyn was born Sept. 16, 1914 in Easby, N.D. She attended high school in Howard Lake, Minn. She moved to Sioux City in 1934 and was a member of First Covenant Church and the Phoebe circle.
Survivors include a daughter, Darlene and her husband, Ralph Jaeger, of Sioux City; a son, Eugene and his wife, Nancy, of Des Moines, Iowa; three grandchildren, John Jaeger, and Chris and Chad Learned.
She was preceded in death by a brother.
Hazel M. Hartnett
Hazel M. Hartnett, 90, of Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at the home of her daughter in South Sioux City after an extended illness.
Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Thomas E. Geelan officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 9 p.m. today with a Scripture Service at 7:30 p.m. at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.
Mrs. Hartnett was born Aug. 22, 1907, the daughter of Jesse and Johanna (Kirwan) Graves, in Hubbard, Neb. She attended school in Hubbard. She married William C. Hartnett on Nov. 20, 1926, in South Dakota, The couple soon moved to Sioux City. She worked for Wincharger for several years. She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Virginia Kennelly of South Sioux City; 15 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Patrick and Ray; two sisters, Julia Hartnett and Florence Hartnett; and two brothers, Ray Graves and William Graves.
Norma R. Parker
Norma R. Parker, 75, of Sioux City died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a short illness.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel with Rev. E. D. Pappadackis officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Parker was born May 8, 1922, the daughter of Clare and Mary (Prell) Thompson, in Mapleton, Iowa. She married Ronald Parker on Dec. 4, 1938, in Onawa, Iowa. He died May 8, 1996, in Sioux City. She was a Sioux City resident since the early 1940s and was employed at Sioux Bee Honey for a short time during World War II. She was a former member of Third Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include a son, Dicker and his wife, Lona, of Dodge City, Kan.; three daughters, Shirley and her husband, Thomas Kinquist, of Sioux City, Nannette and her husband, Ken Johnson, of San Jose, Calif, and Beatrice and her husband, Cerold Jones, of Fair Haven, Mich.; 10 grandchildren, Terri, Ricky, Laura, Eric, Denise, Stuart, Michael, Scott, Debbie, and Tracey; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jimmy, who died in infancy, and Donald; and a sister, Joyce Ferdig.
Donald M. Gallagher
Donald M. Gallagher, 81, of Sioux City died Thursday Feb. 19, 1998,at a Sioux City hospital.
Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church with the Rev. Robert Schimmer, the Rev. Dennis Meinen, and the Rev. Harold Cooper concelebrating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus standing Honor Guard from 6:30 p.m., and a parish vigil service at 7 p.m. at Larkin Northside Funeral Home.
Mr. Gallagher was born Nov. 13, 1916, the son of William J. and Marie (Olden) Gallagher, in Sioux City. He graduated from Central High School in June 1935. He married Inez Reitz in New London, Conn. in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy for eleven years and saw action during World War II. He retired as a Chief Warrent Officer in 1945.
He was employed by Power Engineering and Donavon Construction Co. He was involved in the first successful lunar launch at Cape Canaveral, now known as Cape Kennedy, Fla. He worked on blueprints and wiring of the Dulles International Airport in Washington, D.C. and on the highway warning signal system in Minneapolis. He received many national and state awards for electrical engineering.
He was a lifelong member of St. Joseph Catholic Church to which he volunteered much of his time. He was a member of the 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus, Epiphany council 743, and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, Garrigan assembly. He was very active in the development of Trinity Heights. He was a member of the Legion of Mary, St. Joseph Men's Club, and was a 50-year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers.
Survivors include four sisters, Rose Meinen, Anne Ricker, and Mickey and her husband, Richard Tope, all of Sioux City, and Eileen and her husband, Raymond Dennen, of Bel Flower, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Patricia Schneiders; and a brother, Joseph.
Pallbearers will be John Riker, Robert Riker, William Tope, WIlliam Schneiders, Duane Sudbeck, and Marty Gubbels.
A memorial has been established in his name for the St. Joseph Parish Restoration Fund and The Trinity Heights.
Carol Luther
Carol Ann Luther, 56, of Sioux City, died Friday Feb. 20, 1998, at Countryside Retirement Center in Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Billy Sunday Memorial Tabernacle with the Rev. Jim Thomas of Holly Springs Bible Fellowship officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Christy, Smith & Hockenberry Funeral Home.
Mrs. Luther was born July 6, 1941, the daughter of Sheidan and Esther (Cook) Jordan, in Muncie, Ind. She graduated from Central High School in rural Muncie and attended Ball State College in Muncie for 1 year. She also lived in Lafayette, Ind. and Sacramento, Calif. before moving to Sioux City in 1966. She married Karl E. Luther on Aug. 14, 1960, in Indiana. She was employed as a bookkeeper and seamstress for Williges in Sioux City, and as office manager at Countryside Retirement Home from 1971 to 1986.
She was a very active member of Billy Sunday Memorial Tabernacle and a member of Christian Womens Club.
Survivors include her husband; her mother; a daughter and her husband, Tammy and Mark Krumwiede of Omaha, Neb.; a son and his wife, Todd and Lynn Luther of Omaha; a brother, Max Jordan of Omaha; and three grandchildren, Kara and Kyle Krumwiede, and Brandon Luther.
She was preceded in death by her father.
Pallbearers will be Jack Taylor, Tom Girard, Dennis Hoefer, Darrell Rithie, Marvin Schubert, and Jim Smith.
Leta C. Beebe
Leta C. Beebe, 77, of Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital after a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Whitfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Kretzschmar officiating. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 8:30 p.m. Monday with the family present 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Berkemier Funeral Home.
Mrs. Beebe was born July 13, 1920, the daughter of Colonel and Rena Hackett, in Sioux City. The family moved to Wakonda, S.D. living there for two years before returning to Sioux City. She graduated from Central High School in 1938. She was employed at Wincharger Corp. for a few years and was later employed at Genelli Photographers. She also painted photographs for Genelli's in her home.
She married Leo W. Beebe June 6, 1941, in South Sioux City. The couple then made their home in Sioux City. She had been a member of Whitfield United Methodist Church since 1950, serving as a Sunday school teacher and in various offices of the United Methodist Women, including president, spiritual life chairman, and for 8 years, as circle chairman. She also served on the communion committee, and as chairman for 30 years. She was a member of Zetetic Study Club and was a long time member of the Sioux City Bowlers' Association and Sun Valley Golf Club.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and their wives, Lee W. and Fay of Cary, N.C., and Gary R. and Karen of South Sioux City; a sister and her husband, Vivian and Bonnie Thornton of Rock Island, Ill.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Robert and Shirley Flynn of Pocahontas, Iowa; a granddaughter, Marci Dunlap; three step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; and 12 nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Wayne Hackett and Clyde Lyons.
Tam Mullinix
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Tam Arlo Mullinix, 44 of Cary, N.C., formerly of Sioux Falls, died Thursday at Rex Hospital.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. at Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cary. Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apex Funeral Home in Apex, N.C.
Myrtle L. Schulz
LE MARS, Iowa - Myrtle Lillian Schulz, 90, of Le Mars died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at The Abbey in Le Mars.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Le Mars Church of Christ with the Rev. Ed Snead officiating. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery in Merrill, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars.
Mrs. Schulz was born Aug. 2, 1907, the daughter of James and Dora (Sorenson) Peterson, near Harlan, Iowa. She received her education at Harlan. She married George Schulz on Aug. 12, 1925, in Merrill. The couple farmed in the Merrill, Akron, and Le Mars areas for several years, and moved to Le Mars after retiring in 1969. He died in 1980. She enjoyed spending time gardening and tending to her flowers.
Survivors include a son and his wife, Lowell and Fern of Le Mars; four granddaughters, Patsy Gollhofer, Susan Moller, Rhonda Bowers, and Rebecca Asselin; six great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; three sisters, Mildred Schulz of Le Mars, Gladys Kraus of Le Mars, and Berniece Loutsch of Sioux City; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Petersen of Le Mars.
She was also preceded in death by two children, Clifford and Eva; four sisters, Pearl Schulz, Hazel Huisman, Katie Knecht, and Viola Knecht; and a brother, Lloyd Peterson.
Mae Mortensen
ROYAL, Iowa - Mae Louise Mortensen, 83, of Spencer, formerly of rural Royal, Iowa, died Saturday at Spencer Municipal Hospital in Spencer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Royal. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Spencer. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Monday at Warner Funeral Home in Spencer.
Edward S. Nielsen
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Edward Stanford. Nielsen, 91, of Storm Lake died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, at Methodist Manor in Storm Lake.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church in Storm Lake with the Rev. Penny Ritter officiating. Burial will be in Buena Vista Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be noon to 4 p.m. today at Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.
Mr. Nielsen was born Dec. 30, 1906, the son of Charles and Emma (Johnson) Nielsen, in Harlan, Iowa. He married Louise B. Sherman on May 29, 1935, in Centerville, Iowa. She died Dec. 17, 1990. He had been a Storm Lake resident since 1944 and was a junior high school mathmatics teacher and principal in the Storm Lake school system. He was a member of First Baptist Church and was well known for the roses he grew.
Survivors include a niece, Joyce and her husband, Del Johnson, of Peosta, Iowa; and two great nephews.
He was also preceded in death by two brothers.
Clarence J. Guenther
CROFTON, Neb - Clarence J. Guenther, 67, of Crofton, died Friday, at Good Samaritan Center in Bloomfield, Neb.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Rose of Lima Church in Crofton. Burial will be in St. Rose of Lima Cemetery with Military Services conducted by Crofton American Legion Post #128. Visitation will be 3 to 6 p.m. today at Wintz Funeral Home in Crofton with a vigil service at 7:30 p.m. at the church.
Henry E. Bohr
ALTON, Iowa - Henry E. Bohr, 53, of Alton died Friday, Feb. 20, 1998, at his home in Alton following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Monday with a rosary by St. Mary's Rosary Society at 3 p.m. and and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. at the church. Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of the arrangements.
Mr. Bohr was born April 8, 1944, the son of Fred and Carola (Wolf) Bohr, in Le Mars, Iowa. He wa raised in the Alton area and attended St. Mary's Academy at Alton, graduating in 1962. He was then employed at the Alton Cooperative Elevator in Alton. He married Alice Weber on June 6, 1970, in Oyens, Iowa. The couple lived in Alton. In 1986 he began employment at Tyson Foods of Orange City, Iowa, where he worked until retiring in 1996 for health reasons.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and past member of the Alton Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife; his mother; two brothers, William and his wife, Belva, of Dike, Iowa, and Joseph of Alton; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Bird, Chuck Herrig, Ted Homan, Dennis Klein, Jerry Langel, and Leander Pick.
