Gary L. Savary, 55, of Sioux City died Tuesday at his residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Riverside Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Carrie I. Schrooten
Carrie I. Schrooten, 89, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Morningside Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Roger Graf officiating. There will be no visitation. Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Schrooten was born Aug. 8, 1908, in Sloan, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Maude (Johnson) Bail. She graduated from Sloan High School and attended Morningside College. She was a homemaker.

She married George Schrooten in 1926, in Sioux City. He died in 1970.

She was a member of Mornigside Presbyterian Church, the Morningside Presbyterian Women, the Hannah Circle and the P.E.O.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen Oliver of Sioux City and Barbara Houck and her husband Charles of Muncie, Ind.; a sister, Olive of California; three grandchildren, Kerry, Charles and Jeorg; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sisters, Trix and Beaulia.

James C. Paulson
James Craig Paulson, 68, of Craig, Mo., formerly of Sioux City, died Thursday, Feb. 19, 1998, in Craig.
Services were held Monday, Feb. 23, at Craig Church of the Nazarene, with the Rev. Ray Hollis officiating. Burial was in I.O.O.F. Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Story-Hardin American Legion Post 164. Schooler Funeral Home of Fairfax, Mo., was in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Paulson was born Sept. 19, 1929, in Craig, the son of James A. and Genevieve (Horn) Paulson.He was raised in Craig and graduated from high school in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean War.

He married Shirley Sumner on Dec. 8, 1961. The couple had lived in Falls City, Neb., before moving to Sioux City. They resided in Sioux City for 25 years. They moved to Craig three years ago.

He was a member of Craig Church of the Nazarene and the Story-Hardin American Legion Post 164.

Survivors include his wife; his mother, Genevieve Thompson of Craig; a son and his wife, Mark and Kim Skidmore of of Alexandria, Minn.; three daughters and their husbands, Teresa and John Puhrmann and Julie and Jeff Biggers, all of Boerne, Texas and Tamara and Roger Gadt of Laurie, Mo.; a sister and her husband, Joan and Jerry Liggett of Bradenton, Fla.; a sister-in-law and her husband, Sharon and Greg Fischer of Sioux City; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials may be directed to the Craig Church of the Nazarene.

Pallbearers were members of the Story-Hardin American Legion Post 164.

George T. Webster
George Thomas Webster, 92, of Sioux City died Monday, Feb. 23, 1998, at a local hospital following a sudden illness.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. today at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Merrill G. Muller, pastor Riverside United Methodist Church, officiating.

Mr. Webster was born April 28, 1905, in Chicago, Ill., the son of George and Mary (Dowd) Webster Sr. The family moved to Sioux City in 1912. He attended Central High School in Sioux City.

He married Freda Albeck on Nov. 23, 1927, in Huron, S.D. He was employed with Armour and Company until it closed in 1963 as paymaster, then as an auditor in Northwest Iowa for the State of Iowa and as a bookkeeper for J. Myron Olson of Sioux City. He retired in the early 1980s.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Robert and Elaine of Woodstock, Ga.; two daughters and their husbands, Mary Anne and Daniel Sena of Silver Lakes, Calif. and Shirley and John Merrill of Sioux City; 13 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers.

Pallbearers will be Gregory Webster, Michael and Mark Sena, Brent, Thomas and Robert Merrill.

Bernice V. Spaustat
Bernice V. Spaustat, 85, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at a local nursing home.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Dan Doran and the Rev. Earl Gunsolley officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Graceland Park Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Berkemier Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Spaustat was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Des Moines, the daughter of Howard and Berma (Middleton) Coatney. She was raised and educated in Des Moines. She moved to Sioux City in 1950.

She married Joseph Bettighofer on April 1, 1952, in West Des Moines. The couple resided in Sioux City. He died May 11, 1978. She married Gus Spaustat on Oct. 6, 1986, in Scottsdale, Ariz. The couple resided in Sioux City. She was employed at St. Vincent Hospital for several years.

She was a member of First Evangelical Free Church.

Survivors include her husband and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a brother and a sister.

Floyd J. Carman
Floyd J. Carman, 67, of Sioux City, formerly of South Sioux City, died Wednesday at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Becker-Hunt Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery at Emerson, Neb. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Ida Mae Johnson
Ida Mae Johnson, 68, of Sioux City died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Wesley United Methodist Church, with Dr. Charles Klink officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Larkin Northside Funeral Home. Visitation will resume from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. until service time Friday at the church.

Mrs. Johnson was born April 21, 1929, in Martinsburg, Neb., the daughter of Walter and Hattie Bauman. She was raised in Ponca, Neb. and graduated from Ponca High School in 1948.

She married Le Roy E. Johnson on June 18, 1950, in Martinsburg. The couple moved to Sioux City. She was employed at her parents' cream station in Ponca. She then was employed as a production line worker for The Battery Factory and with Weller Fishing Tackle Company.

She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, the Senior Citizens Center and the Quilting Club. She enjoyed sewing, camping and gardening.

Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Rosann Smith and Julie and her husband William Barbee, all of Sioux City; three sons, John of Dakota City, Walter and his wife Lori and Corey, all of Sioux City; her mother of South Sioux City; two brothers, Maurice of San Diego, Calif. and Jerome of Sioux City; a sister, Beaulah Schoon of Emmetsberg, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, and three brothers, Albert, Marvin and Jay Bauman.

Pallbearers will be Rick Taylor, Darrell and Dennis Lunquist, Harold Hanson, Richard Olander and Mike Nowlen.

Laura M. Brown, 52, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Sioux City, died Sunday in Phoenix.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel. Burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery.

Ld. Robert Klesath

Ld. Robert Klesath, 77, of Bothell, Wash., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday, Feb. 21, 1998, at a Kirkland, Wash., hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Marvin Boes, pastor of St. Boniface Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Monahan Post 64. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Klesath was born May 1, 1920, in Montgomery, Iowa, the son of Ed Alfred and Texana (Thorp) Klesath. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He married Georgia V. Ebert on April 3, 1970, in Elk Point, S.D. She died March 8, 1988, in Sioux City. He was employed as a construction superintendent for Holtze, Klinger and Gleeson construction companies.

He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local 948, and the Triangle Masonic Lodge 643 A.F. & A.M.

Survivors include a son, Robert Hartman of Boise, Idaho; a daughter, Martha of California; a stepdaughter and her husband, Barbara and James Prochello of Sioux City; three sisters, Geneva Locey of Spirit Lake, Iowa, Orpha Gilroy of Santa Rosa, Calif. and Opal Gray of Bothell, Wash.; several grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; and 12 stepgreat-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepson, Terry Ebert.

Mabel B. Haugen
Mabel Bertha Haugen, 85, of Sioux City died Tuesday at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Morningside Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Phyllis M. McAtee
Phyllis M. McAtee, 81, of Sioux City died Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Tim Blanchard, pastor of Central Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. McAtee was born April 6, 1916, in Lincoln Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of William and Byrdie (Saunders) Langle. She graduated from Sioux City Central High School and Morningside College with a bachlor of arts degree in 1938. She received her Iowa Advanced Elementary Teachers Certificate in 1939 from Iowa State Teachers College.

She married Ralph McAtee on June 5, 1943, in McCook Lake, S.D. He preceded her in death. She taught school at Cushing (Iowa) High School and South Sioux City High School. She was principal and taught at Jefferson (S.D.) High School and principal at Hubbard (Neb.) High School. She was also the librarian for St. Vincent's Hospital School of Nursing.

She was a member of Central Baptist Church, the American Assocation of University Women, the Alpha Sigma Sorority, the Phi Sigma Iota, which is a National Sorority, the Honorary Fraternity for Romance Languages and the Senior Citizens Center.

Survivors include a sister, Opal Holt of Sioux City; a nephew and his wife, Carleton and Judy Holt of Dakota Dunes; two grand-nephews, Austin and Cody; and her special friend, Perry Jewitt.

She was preceded in death by a brother.

Pallbearers will be Steven Fisher, Dan Ryan, Ed Young, Perry Jewitt, Carl Johansen, Bill and Greg Schroeder.

Carol L. Miller, 63, of Sioux City died Wednesday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Bertha I. Wrenn, 90, of Sioux City died Wednesday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Thomas Davelis, 85, of Sioux City died Wednesday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Leonard Daniels Jr.
MERRILL, Iowa - Leonard E. Daniels Jr., 62, of Henderson, Nev., formerly of Merrill, died Friday, Feb. 13, 1998, at a hospital in Henderson.
Graveside services were held in Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery at Boulder City, Nev., with military rites.

Mr. Daniels was born Aug. 12, 1935, near Smithland, Iowa, the son of Leonard E. and Audrey Marie (McDonald) Daniels. He moved with his family to a farm near Merrill in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army as a career soldier, retiring in 1979. He had lived in Henderson for 18 years.

He was a member of the Henderson Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3848 and been active in the Boy Scouts and the American Legion.

Survivors include two brothers and their wives, Arvin and Bonnie of Sioux City and Daryl and Donna of South Sioux City; a sister, Debbie Daniels of Merrill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Janet Lindsey and Loretta Nott Boelter; two brothers-in-law, Clinton Lindsey and Kenneth Boelter; and a nephew.

Leonard E. Kastengren
AURELIA, Iowa - Leonard E. Kastengren, 71, of Aurelia died of cancer Tuesday at the Sioux Valley Memorial Hospital in Cherokee, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee. Burial will be in Afton Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the funeral home.

Clara Carritt
UTE, Iowa - Clara Carritt, 84, of Ute died Wednesday at an Omaha, Neb., hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Pual Lutheran Church in Ute. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Ute.

Mervyl O. Olsen
CHEROKEE, Iowa - Mervyl Olinus Olsen, 73, of Cherokee died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, with a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m., at Memorial Presbyterian Church in Cherokee, with the Rev. Ray Kruger officiating. Burial will be in Schaller City Cemetery at Schaller, Iowa. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday, at the Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.

Mr. Olsen was born May 8, 1924, near Schaller, the son of Olinus and Margola (Kyle) Olsen. He graduated from Schaller High School in 1941, and completed an airplane engine mechanics course at National School of Aeronautics in Kansas City, Mo., in 1942. He moved to Detroit, Mich., where he was employed in the research division of the Continental Aviation and Engineering Company. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II as an airplane mechanic and flight engineer, stationed in numerous Stateside bases, Brazil and the Ascension Islands.

He married Ruby Bruggeman on Jan. 8, 1944, in Kansas City, Mo. Following his discharge, he returned to Wayne, Mich., where he was employed with Stinson Airplane Manufacturing Division, building Stinson Voyager airplanes. He later completed a course in auto body repair and auto mechanics at Wolverine School of Trades in Detroit.

The couple moved to Cherokee in July 1947, where he was employed with the Peterson Motor Company until March 1952, when he opened Olsen Body Service. In 1958, he opened Olsen Rentals. He also worked for Cherokee Industrial Corporation from 1973 to 1976. He lived in Windsor Heights and Des Moines, working for the Iowa Development Commission, Industrial Development Division as the assistant director. He returned to Cherokee in 1986. She died Dec. 16, 1996.

He was a member of Memorial Presbyterian Church, the Cherokee Flying Club, the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce, the Serpaci Antique Car Club, the Antique Aircraft Association and the Cherokee County Historical Society. He served on the Cherokee Airport Commission, the Cherokee City Council and as a chairman of the Cherokee Chamber of Commerce I & M Bureau. He enjoyed traveling and camping.

Survivors include a son and his wife, Gary and Connie of Cherokee; two daughters and their husbands, Delores and Lonnie Painter of Fulton, Ill. and Diane and Bill Bean of Winchester, Ky.; seven grandchildren, Kyle, Kevin and Kory Olsen, Ryan Painter, Josh, Jennifer and Katrina Bean; and a sister and her husband, Lenora and Don Hartmen of Lee's Summitt, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a stillborn son; and a brother, Ronald.

Rev. Warren Hietbrink
SIBLEY, Iowa - Rev. Warren Hietbrink, 71, of Worthington, Minn., died Monday at the Osceola Community Hospital in Sibley.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at American Reformed Church in Worthington. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Andringa Funeral Home in Sibley.

Deanna Shadlow
STORM LAKE, Iowa - Deanna R. Shadlow, 32, of Storm Lake died Tuesday at her residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Storm Lake. Burial will be in Storm Lake City Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present from 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the Fratzke Funeral Home in Storm Lake.

Emily M. Seggerman
KINGSLEY, Iowa - Emily M. Seggerman, 93, of Kingsley died Wednesday at the Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, Iowa.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday in Remsen City Cemetery at Remsen, Iowa. Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Correctionville, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Friday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Earnest-Michaelson Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Esther E. Lovejoy
WAKONDA, S.D. - Esther E. Lovejoy, 88, of Wakonda died Tuesday at Sacred Heart Hospital in Yankton, Iowa.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Pleasant Valley Lutheran Church in rural Wakonda. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Hansen Funeral Home in Vermillion, S.D.

Sophie Haan
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Sophie Haan, 86, of Rock Rapids died Wednesday at the Lyon Manor Care Center in Rock Rapids.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Joseph R. Walsh
PONCA, Neb. - Joseph R. Walsh, 74, of Ponca died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ponca, with the Rev. James Bartak officiating. Burial will be in Calvary at South Creek Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. today, with the family present from 4 to 5 p.m., at the Mohr Funeral Home in Ponca. Visitation will resume at 6 p.m. today, with a vigil service at 7 p.m., at the church.

Mr. Walsh was born Dec. 13, 1923, in rural Willis, Neb., the son of Joseph and Mary (Casey) Walsh. He attended Curran Public School District 36 and St. Catherine's Academy in Jackson, Neb. He began farming in the Willis and Ponca area.

He married Carmelita Rembe on Feb. 3, 1951, in Sioux City. The couple farmed in the Ponca area. She died March 27, 1982. He married Wanda Crawford on Feb. 14, 1987, in Ponca. Following his retirement, they moved into Ponca.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include his wife; three sons and their wives, Dennis and Theresa of Dakota City, Tony and Mary of Jackson and Robert and Charlene of Toronto, Kan.; three daughters and their husbands, Teresa and Ken Pavlushik of Ponca, Patsy and Kevin Moody of Dallas, Texas, and Anna and Dale Hackney of Waterbury, Neb.; his mother of Ponca; two brothers, Jimmy of Ponca and Jack and his wife Glenna of Anthon, Iowa; two sisters and their husbands, Bonnie and Paul Bird of Owatonna, Minn. and Kay and Bob Schwiesow of Bellevue, Wash.; 17 grandchildren; 19 stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; a daughter, Mary; a stepdaughter, Syndi Townsend; and a stepgrandson, Travis Townsend.

Pallbearers will be Junior Mentzer, and grandsons, D.J. and T.J. Walsh, Joey Pavlushik, Joe Hackney, Todd Hill and Corey Moody.

Leonard E. Stephenson
ANTHON, Iowa - Leonard Emerson Stephenson, 87, of Anthon died Tuesday, Feb. 24, 1998, at the Willow Dale Care Center in Battle Creek, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Church of Christ in Anthon, with the Rev. Elmer Hodge officiating. Burial will be in St. Clair Cemetery at Ute, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Armstrong Funeral Home in Anthon.

Mr. Stephenson was born March 10, 1904, in Holstein, Iowa, the son of Elmer Emerson and Sarah Caroline (Long) Stephenson.

He married Mabel Aaby on Dec. 13, 1924, in Carroll, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Ute area until 1949, when they moved into Osage, Iowa. In 1951, they moved to a farm near Anthon. They moved into Anthon in 1970. She died Aug. 7, 1974. He entered the nursing home in October 1994.

He was a member of Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Leonard Jr. and Juanita, and Wayne and Delores, all of Ute; three sisters, Edna Klemmensen of Moville, Iowa, Patriat Anderson and Sarah Nell Stephensen, both of Ida Grove, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four daughters, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Hollowood, three great-grandchildren and three sisters.

Ursula Rolston
SHELDON, Iowa - Ursula Rolston, 92, of Sheldon died Wednesday at the Oak Park Care Center in Sheldon.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Church of the Brethren of rural Sheldon. Burial will be at a later date in Greenwood Cemetery at Matlock, Iowa. There will be no visitation. Vander Ploeg Funeral Home of Sheldon is in charge of the arrangements.
