Eugene Hafits
Eugene Hafits, 81, of Sioux City died Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel, with James Sherman, spiritual leader at Congregation Beth Shalom, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Hafits was born March 8, 1916, in Sioux City, the son of David Z. and Zelda (Rich) Hafits. He graduated from Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in France and Belgium. He was the owner of the Morningside Hardware Store.

He was a member of United Orthodox Synagogue and the American Legion.

Survivors include a brother and his wife, Harold and Harriette Hafits of Fremont, Neb.; six nieces; and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by three borthers, Paul, Arthur and William.

Lucille E. Rameden
Lucille E. Rameden, 85, of Sioux City died of cancer Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at her residence.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Gerald Kapanka officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present from 6 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Glen Rachuy officiating, at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Mrs. Rameden was born Oct. 22, 1912, in St. Helena, Neb., the daughter of William and Edith (Andersen) Schaller. She was raised on a farm in the St. Helena area. She attended schools in St. Helena and Wynot, Neb. She was employed as a nanny in Yankton, S.D. before moving to Sioux City, where she also worked as a nanny.

She married Amen Rameden on Sept. 4, 1940, in Sioux City. He died Nov. 28, 1986, in Sioux City.

She was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid and the Bible Study Group. She enjoyed flowers, crossword puzzles and playing Scabble.

Survivors include two daughters, Gloria Nielsen of Spencer, Iowa and ryrna and her husband Jim Jones of Sioux City; a sister, Audrey Georgius of Pateros, Wash.; and three grandchildren, Cindy Alvano, Marcy Schroeder and James Jones Jr.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Linda; two sisters, Bernice Becker and Irma Bremer; and a brother, Orville Schaller.

Pallbearers will be Jim and James Jones Jr., Tim Alvano, Dr. Joey Schroeder, Dick and Bob Becker.

Joe Devine
Joe Devine, 80, of Sioux City died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998 in Sioux City.
Services will be at 11 a.m. today at Congregation Beth Shalom, with Mr. James Sherman, spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Shalom, officiating. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Devine was born Dec. 19, 1917, the son of Louis and Anna (Berkowitz) Devine, in Omaha, Neb. He came to Sioux City as a child and graduated from Central High School. He served in the U.S. Army.

He married Rosemay Rowley on April 6, 1947, in Sioux City. He owned and operated Ingleside and Westwood Nursing Homes in Sioux City and Brentwood Nursing Home in Le Mars, Iowa. He also built and operated the Clifton Apartments in Sioux City.

He was a member of Congretation Beth Shalom and a charter member of Suburban Rotary Club. He was a past president of the Board of Marian Health Center and was active in the Boys Club.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Robin Devine of Lawrence, Kan.; a son, Kirk Devine of Lawrence; two sisters, Goldie Baker of Sioux City, and Pauline Simon of Van Nuys, Calif.; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Virginia E. Gallagher
Virginia E. Gallagher, 82, of Sioux City died Thursday, Feb. 5, 1998, at a Sioux City care center following a brief illness.
Services will be at 1 p.m. today at Augustana Lutheran Church with Rev Michael Last officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Gallagher was born May 10, 1915, the daughter of Nels L. and Myrtle (Johnson) Nelson, in Sioux City. She attended Sioux City schools. She married Dudley Gallagher on Dec. 12, 1936, in Sioux City. He died Dec. 17, 1989, in Sioux City. She was a production supervisor for the Wincharger Corp., later the Zenith Corp. for over 30 years, retiring in 1978.

She was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and a former member of Azure Chapter #540 O.E.S.

Survivors include a sister, LaVerne Levay of Sioux City; a niece, Karen McCoy; and four nephews, Jerry and William Levay and Carl and Steven McCoy.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy McCoy.

A memorial in her name has been established for Augustana Lutheran Church.

Minnie M. Gardiner, 97, of Sioux City died Sunday; Nelson-Berger Northside Chapel.

Hazel Mae Sutton, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Roger Eldon Benson, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday; Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home.

Theodore J. Anderson, 77, of Sioux City died Sunday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

J.P. "Jim" Naughton, 84, of Sioux City died Saturday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Darrell Mae Baker, 81, of Sioux City died Friday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Clarence Knaack
CORRECTIONVILLE, Iowa - Clarence Knaack, 83, of Correctionville died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at the Correctionville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Grace United Methodist Church in Correctionville, with the Rev. Consorcia A. Sanchez officiating. Burial will be in Fairfield Cemetery. Barker Funeral Home of Correctionville is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Knaack was born May 9, 1914, in Correctionville, the son of Fred and Anna (Herbold) Knaack. He attended school in Correctionville.

He married Angeline Meister on May 21, 1940, in Kingsley, Iowa. The couple farmed near Pierson, Iowa for several years before moving to the Rock Branch, Iowa area, where they farmed until retiring in the early 1980s. Following retirement, they moved to Correctionville. He enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include his wife; a sister-in-law, Nora Knaack of Correctionville; a niece, Twila Kuklin; and a nephew, Gaylen Knaack.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Melvin.

Willard Den Hartog
SHELDON, Iowa - Willard Den Hartog, 71, of Sheldon died Saturday at the Northwest Iowa Health Center in Sheldon.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Sheldon. Burial will be in East Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

Marie M. Lutjens
LE MARS, Iowa - Marie M. Lutjens, 83, of Le Mars died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at the Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A., with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church. Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. Lutjens was born Dec. 22, 1914, in rural Boyden, Iowa, the daughter of John and Lena (Wornker) Rohlfes. She was raised in the Sheldon, Iowa area.

She married Wally Lutjens on Oct. 31, 1937, in Sheldon. The couple had lived in Le Mars since 1951.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church E.L.C.A.

Survivors include her husband; a son and his wife, Kent and Lucy of Berkeley, Ill.; a daughter and her husband, Kathi and Don Skinner of Lake City, Iowa; five granddaughters; and a sister, Matie Horn of Boyden.

Serena Plagman
PETERSON, Iowa - Serena Plagman, 94, of Peterson died Saturday at Millie's Rest Home in Sutherland, Iowa.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Congregational Church in Peterson. Burial will be in Barnes Township Cemetery at Linn Grove, Iowa. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Warner Funeral Home in Peterson.

Willerd A. Sawin
ANTHON, Iowa - Willerd Arthur Sawin, 79, of Anthon died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at the Correctionville, Iowa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Memorial services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Anthon, with the Rev. David Hogan officiating. Burial will be in Peiro Cemetery at Grant Township, rural Anthon. There will be no visitation. Armstrong Funeral Home of Anthon is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Sawin was born May 29, 1918, near Anthon, the son of Arthur and Laura (Eckert) Sawin. He graduated from Oto (Iowa) High School in 1935.

He married Helen Gothler on Feb. 26, 1938, in Sioux City. Along with farming, he working for the ASCS Office and Federal Crop Insurance.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; a son and his wife, Gary and Karen of Oto; four daughters, Mary Ellen and her husband Ron Houghtaling of Anthon, Kathleen Baltzell of Des Moines, Gloria Sawin of Santa Fe, N.M. and Valerie and her husband Kim Preston of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a granddaughter, a great-grandson and a son-in-law.

Hattie Blum-Broesder
RAOCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Hattie Blum-Broesder, 80, formerly of Rock Rapids died Sunday at the Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Rock Rapids. Burial will be in Grandview Convenant Cemetery at rural Larchwood, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 7 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.

Harriet Zorgdrager
ROCK RAPIDS, Iowa - Harriet Zorgdrager, 73, of Rock Rapids died Sunday at the Merrill Pioneer Community Hospital in Rock Rapids.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Reformed Church in Rock Rapids. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery at Little Rock, Iowa. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with the family present from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the Roste Funeral Home in Rock Rapids.
