Cornelius Schmitt
Cornelius "C. T." Schmitt, 59, of Sioux City died unexpectedly Thursday, July 9, 1998, in Sioux City.
Services were held Monday at Anderson-Perasso Funeral Home with the Revs. David Rockhoff and Louis Sievert officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Schmitt was born April 3, 1939, in Detroit, the son of Sylvester and Clara Schmitt.

He married Ardis Grosenheider on Dec. 19, 1959, in Long Beach, Calif.

He grew up in Chicago and had lived most of his adult life in Sioux City.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

Mr. Schmitt worked in sales and most recently was employed by Bennett Vending Co.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Dan Schmitt and his wife, DeAnna, Tim Schmitt and his wife, Laura, and Greg Schmitt, all of Sioux City, and eight grandchildren, Tiffany, Jeremiah and Kassandra Schmitt, Taylor and Kaitlin Forsling and Truman, Ashley and Dallas Schmitt.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Anthony.

Vera E. Miller
Vera E. Miller, 80, of Sioux City died Sunday at her residence.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Third Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Louise B. Haugen
Louise Bertha Haugen, 95, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at her residence following a brief illness.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Morningside Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Kevin Lee officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visit-ation will be 4 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 9 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m. officiated by the Rev. Donohue Sarff, at Nelson-Berger Morningside Chapel.

Mrs. Haugen was born Jan. 19, 1903, near Remsen, Iowa, the daughter of Henry and Marie Reiners. In 1922, she moved to Sioux City with her sisters.

She was employed with O.J. Moore Grocery Co. and later at St. Joseph Hospital in the nurse's dining room.

She married Peter J. Haugen in 1932, in Sioux City. She was then a homemaker. He died Nov. 14, 1977.

She was a member of Morningside Lutheran Church and the Dorcas Circle.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Shirley Mae and Joseph Scariano of Chicago; eight grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Marianne Linkenhoger, four brothers and two sisters.

Pallbearers will be her grandsons and great-grandsons, Anthony, Peter, Bruce and David Scariano, Steve Rossberg and Joseph Cummins.

Memorials in her name may be directed to Morningside Lutheran Church.

Chester A. Rolland
Chester A. Rolland, 82, of Sioux City died Monday at his residence following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Berkemier Funeral Home. Graveside services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday in East View Cemetery, Allen, Neb. Visitation will be 2 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., at the funeral home.

John G. Rickwa
John G. Rickwa, 55, of Omaha, Neb., formerly of Sioux City, died Saturday at the Linderwood in Omaha.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home in Sioux City.

Glendora E. Alvarez
Glendora E. Alvarez, 79, of Sioux City died Saturday, July 11, 1998, in Sioux City following a lengthy illness.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christy, Smith and Hockenberry Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Doran officiating. Burial will be in Graceland Park Cemetery. Visit-ation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Mrs. Alvarez was born Dec. 14, 1918, in St. Joseph, Mo., the daughter of Lewis and Lillie May (Rich) Spillman. She had been a resident of Sioux City for most of her life.

She graduated from Western Iowa Tech Community College as an L.P.N.

She married John L. Alvarez on June 4, 1938, in Elk Point, S.D.

She was employed at the local hospitals, Matney's Nursing Home in Sioux City and Green Acres Nursing Home in South Sioux City.

She enjoyed fishing and the outdoors.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Gary of Kansas City, John M. and his wife, Marvena, of Sioux City, James and his wife, Lynda, of Omaha, Neb., and Terry and his wife, Sara, of Westminster, Colo.; a daughter and her husband, Patricia and James Vaughn of Sioux City; three sisters, Anges Loberg of Fargo, N.D., Patricia and her husband, John Eide, of Everett, Wash., and June Klumb of Joplin, Mo.; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a grandson, a brother and a sister.

Pallbearers will be Trino and Tim Alvarez, Randy Leedom, Richard Jones, Jim Vaughn and Rodney O'Dell.

Elaine L. Van Dyke
Elaine Louise Van Dyke, 85, of Sioux City died Friday, July 10, 1998, at a Sioux City nursing home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at the Larkin Northside Funeral Home with Monsignor Frank J. Brady and the Rev. Marvin Mueller officiating. Private burial will be in Logan Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Van Dyke was born on Feb. 8, 1913, the daughter of Guy and Naomi (Terwilliger) Andrews. She graduated from Central High School and attended Milwaukee Downer College.

She married John William Van Dyke on June 10, 1939, in Sioux City. He died July 1, 1981, in Sioux City.

She was a lifelong resident of Sioux City. She was on the board of the YWCA, the Mary Elizabeth Day Care Center and Crippled Children's Board.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, the Daughters of the American Revolution, Junior League, Questors and American Girls.

Survivors include two sons and their wives, Tom and Kathy Van Dyke of Sioux City and John and Mary Van Dyke of San Francisco, and four grandchildren, Jason and Jeff Van Dyke and Bill and Jane Van Dyke.

Memorials may be sent in her name to the Big Sioux Chapter of the Alzheimer's Association.

Spc. Jeremy R. Combs
U.S. Army Specialist Jeremy Ray Combs, 24, of Sioux City died Sunday, July 5, 1998, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident while stationed in Germany.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Leo Kos-tizen, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Honor Guard from Fort Leavenworth, Kan. Visitation will be 3 to 9 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the funeral home.

Spc. Combs was born Dec. 26, 1973, in Sioux City. He graduated from East High School in 1992.

He married Danielle Smith on Sept. 29, 1994, in Sioux City.

He served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1991 to 1993. He entered active duty in 1993, and was stationed at Fort Gordon, Ga. He was then stationed in Baumholder, Germany, in March 1994. He was transferred to Buedingen, Germany, in April 1995. His unit was the first to cross the bridge into Bosnia in December 1995. He returned to Buedingen in November 1996.

Survivors include his wife of Sioux City; a son, Jax of Sioux City; two daughters, Daqri of Sioux City and Nicole of Germany; his parents, Gwendolyn Combs Reese of Sioux City and Jerry Combs of Mapleton, Iowa; maternal grandmother, Luella Rose Reese of Sioux City; a twin brother, Jared Stewart Combs of Sioux City; a sister, Britni Combs of Sioux City; a stepsister, Stephanie Combs of St. Charles, Mo.; and his mother and father-in-law, Hollis and Wendy Barnhart of Las Vegas.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John S. Reese, and paternal grandparents, Ralph and Agnes Combs.

Pallbearers will be Britni and Jared S. Combs, John Stewart Reese Jr., John Stewart Reese III, Jeff Reese and Justin Magee.

Mickey VanDeventer
Mickey M. VanDeventer, 71, of Sioux City died Saturday at a Sioux City hospital following a lengthy illness.
Private family graveside services will be Friday. Visitation will be 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, with the family present 6 to 7 p.m., at Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Viola T. McKelvey
Viola T. McKelvey, 93, of Sioux City died Monday, July 13, 1998, at a Sioux City hospital following a brief illness.
Services will be at 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at Holy Spirit Retirement Home Chapel, with the Rev. LeRoy L. Seuntjens, chaplain, officiating. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. until service time Wednesday at Holy Spirit Chapel. Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.

Mrs. McKelvey was born July 12, 1905, in Elk Point, S.D., the daughter of James and Bridget (Watters) Murray.

She graduated from Elk Point High School in 1921. She attended St. Catherines College in St. Paul, Minn., and the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D.

She was selected as the first Miss Elk Point in the early 1920s.

She married Daniel P. McKelvey on Aug. 4, 1934, in Elk Point. He died June 28, 1979.

She was employed as a saleswoman for a children's line, traveling in the Midwest with her husband. From 1973 to 1983, she was a hostess at the Normandy Restaurant.

She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Janice and Charles Clark and Kathi and Otto Schrunk; two grandchildren, Jill and Jason Schrunk; and a great-granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Glory A. Fletcher, 65, of Sioux City died Monday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Ruth MacTiavish Minor
Ruth MacTiavish Minor, 81, of Sioux City died Monday; Meyer Brothers Colonial Chapel.

Lavone B. Hansen
RANDOLPH, Neb. - Lavone B. Hansen, 73, of Randolph died Sunday at Colonial Manor in Randolph.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. John Lutheran Church in Randolph. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery, McLean, Neb. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Johnson Funeral Home in Randolph.

George Bingham
DIXON, Neb. - George Marion Bingham, 83, of Laurel, Neb., formerly of Dixon, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Laurel Hillcrest Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Lutheran Church in Laurel, with the Rev. Kenneth Marquardt officiating. Burial will be in Bancroft Cemetery, Bancroft, Neb. Visitation will be 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Schumacher Funeral Home in Laurel. There will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church.

Mr. Bingham was born April 18, 1915, in Edge, Texas, the son of George and Thula (McCarty) Bingham. He was baptized and confirmed.

He graduated from Normangee High School in Normangee, Texas, in 1933, and Texas A&M in 1941.

He served as a major in the U.S. Army from 1941 to 1946, in charge of troop transports.

He married Elverna Samson on Feb. 12, 1944, in Englewood, Calif. The couple made their home in Texas, where he taught vocational agriculture. They moved to Bancroft in 1948, where they farmed and he taught vocational agriculture until 1957. They moved to Dixon, where he raised hogs and taught science in Laurel Public School.

He was a member of United Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife of Dixon; three sons, George N. of Phoenix, Ariz., David and his wife, Kathy, of Lincoln, Neb., and Calvin and his wife, Carrie, of Shawnee Mission, Kan.; a daughter and her husband, Nancy and Pat Hartnett of Chicago; 10 grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, four brothers and four sisters.

Donald Huisman
SANBORN, Iowa - Donald Huisman, 52, of San Mateo, Calif., died Friday at his residence.
Graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, July 20, in Roseland Cemetery at Sanborn. Family visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Sanborn Funeral Home.

Nellie Lane
DENISON, Iowa - Nellie Lane, 90, of Dension died Sunday at Mary Greeley Hospital in Ames, Iowa.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at St Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison. Burial will be in St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Vail, Iowa. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with a Legion of Mary rosary at 4 p.m. and a wake service at 7 p.m., at the Huebner Funeral Home in Dension.

Albert Reinders
ORANGE CITY, Iowa - Albert Reinders, 90, formerly of Orange City and Sioux Center, Iowa, died Saturday at his son's residence in Eau Claire, Wis.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.

Brandon M. Schau
IDA GROVE, Iowa - Brandon Michael Schau, 17, of Marion, Iowa, formerly of Ida Grove, died Sunday, July 12, 1998, at Ida Grove Horn Memorial Hospital of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in Ida County.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Marion, with the Rev. Michael Fitzgerald officiating. Burial will be in Oak Shade Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. until service time Thursday at the church.

Brandon was born June 24, 1981, in Ida Grove, the son of Michael and Beth (Ludwig) Schau.

He was a junior at Marion High School, where he participated in basketball, studyed journalism and worked on the school newspaper and yearbook. He was employed with Fareway and Menards.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was active in DARE and TATOO.

Survivors include his mother and her fiance, Beth and Ron Kleinmeyer; three brothers, Cole, Zeth and Kyle, all at home; his father and his special friend, Michael and Judy Clark of Ida Grove; two half sisters, Meagan Patnode and Jordan Schau; a half brother, Jeremy Schau; and grandparents, Mary Jean Ludwig of Indianola, Iowa, Paula Schau of Ida Grove and Herb and LuVerna Kleinmeyer of Williamsburg, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Michael Ludwig and Marlyn Schau.

Memorials in his name may be directed to Marion High School.

KIRON, Iowa - Vernal S. Gustafson, 91, of rural Kiron died Sunday at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison, Iowa.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Kiron. Burial will be in Kiron Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m., at Pfannebecker Funeral Home in Denison.

Robert T. Hayes
MOVILLE, Iowa - Robert Thomas "Bubba" Hayes, 21, of Moville died Saturday, July 12, 1998, of injuries suffered in an automobile accident on Highway 20.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Moville, with Monsignor Roger J. Augustine officiating. Burial will be in Ar lington Township Cemetery. Visit-ation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a parish prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church. McCulloch Funeral Home of Moville is in charge of the arrangements.

Mr. Hayes was born April 18, 1977, in Sioux City, the son of Charles and Tamara (Thomas) Hayes.

He graduated from Woodbury Central High School in 1995, where he participated in sports. He attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, and Wayne State College in Wayne, Neb. He had planned to attended Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa, this fall.

He was employed during the summer with the Woodbury County Secondary Roads Department.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the Meadows Country Club. He enjoyed weightlifting, playing cards and the Green Bay Packers.

Survivors include his parents; a brother and his wife, Chad and Karri of Kingsley, Iowa; a niece; paternal grandmother, Nora Bell Hayes of Sioux City; maternal grandparents, Bob and Marcella Thomas of Moville; and many aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his grandfather, John Hayes.

Pallbearers will be Travis and Bernie Thomas, Jason Johnson, Frankie Juarez, Dusty Hannah, Kurt Bremer, Gary Gruis and Craig O'Conner.

RUTHVEN, Iowa - Craig Merlyn Johnson, 43, of Ruthven died Saturday at University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Ruthven. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Ruthven.

John J. Strissel
CHEROKEE, Iowa - John J. "Jack" Strissel, 71, of Cherokee, formerly of Chicago, died Sunday at Veterans Administration Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Greenwood Funeral Home in Cherokee. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be 1 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home.
