Reverend Mr. James Henry Goettsche

Reverend Mr. James H. Goettsche: our beloved father, grandfather, husband, brother, uncle, coach, deacon and friend passed away in his home Wednesday evening surrounded by his family following a long battle with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. Jim has returned home to Jesus.
Jimmy, as his mother called him, was born on May 5, 1939, in Burley, Idaho, the eldest son of Julius Burton Goettsche and Ruth Muriel Hungerford. Growing up, Jimmy enjoyed the life of a farm youth. He was active in Boy Scouts and 4-H - showing animals at the county fair. In 1950, the family - Jimmy and his two younger sisters - moved to Enterprise, Oregon, for about a year. Near the house was a very steep hill. A favorite family story recounts how Jimmy rode his bike down the hill one day and wrecked. He came home crying, "My mommy told me not to ride my bike down the hill."
Jim was a very studious boy - always reading very thick books. At Burley High School he was a National Merit Scholar and attended Boys' State. He also earned athletic letters in tennis and track and was the president of the school's FFA branch - representing his school at the National Conference in Omaha in 1956. In 1957, he graduated valedictorian.
Jim continued to be active in the College of Idaho, where he was a member of the Beta Chi fraternity, Philo Tech science club and the Scarlet Masque drama club. The summer after his sophomore year, Jim drove his '52 Chevy to Mexico as part of a Philo Tech field trip. In the fall of 1958, while he was playing the part of the Bookseller in "The World of Sholom Alachem," he met a young freshman, MaryDee Stark. After that, for the remainder of college, they frequently enjoyed walking to The Golden Pheasant for fried rice. Jim received his B.S. in chemistry in 1961, graduating with honors.
Upon graduation, Jim joined the National Guard and attended basic training in Fort Ord., Calif. In 1962, Jim was a high school teacher in Parma, Idaho. Parma being such a small school, dad taught history, science and political science. As the adviser of the political science club, he took his class to Boise to observe the state Legislature. Following his time as a teacher, he attended officer candidate school at the Idaho Military Academy - earning multiple awards. This was followed by Ordinance School at the Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland.
Returning in the fall of 1963, he married MaryDee on Sept. 15 of that year at the First Presbyterian Church in Idaho Falls. After honeymooning in Yellowstone and Glacier National Parks, they settled in Idaho Falls, where dad began working as a chemist at the CPP for PPCo at the site. For the next 36 years, through several name changes and various contractors, dad rode the bus to work - finishing many very thick books and engaging in many long conversations with friends. On Jan. 30, 1965, Jim and MaryDee were blessed with their first child, Daniel James.
In 1968, Jim's National Guard unit was called to active duty. MaryDee and Dan followed Jim to Ft. Lewis, Wash., that summer before Jim shipped out to Vietnam in August. In Vietnam, Jim was a company commander for the 116th Combat Engineer Battalion rising to the rank of Captain and earning a Distinguished Service Medal before returning to his family in August of 1969. He left the National Guard the following year as tensions were heating up in the Middle East. He did not want to have to leave his family behind again. After time, he became involved in the VFW and enjoyed participating in their activities.
Upon returning from Vietnam, Jim devoted himself to his family, his community and his God.
In 1970, he and MaryDee and Dan rented a trailer and went across country to visit the Starks, who lived in New York City. On that trip, we visited many family and historical sites - Gettysburg, Mount Vernon, West Point, Valley Forge and the Stark family roots at Mystic Seaport. In June of 1973, their miracle baby Michael David was born - through tremendous prayer and the grace of God, he survived a very serious illness that same summer. As a family, we always enjoyed trips to visit family in Swan Valley, Jim's folks at the farm in Burley, MaryDee's parents - now in Sacramento and Jim's sisters in Emmett and Seattle. Family reunions always became joyous events. We also enjoyed camping, fishing and backpacking. Every outing we went on, Jim told stories about the history of the region or about Grandpa Goettsche when he was younger. In 1993, Jim became a grandpa with the birth of Jennifer Kay. Being a grandpa was a calling Jim truly loved. He enjoyed wrestling with the boys when they were old enough, going on picnics with the kids and taking photos - if the kids would sit still long enough for Grandpa to focus.
When Michael was old enough, much of our time, many of the family trips, most of the conversation around the dinner table revolved around soccer. As a family, we traveled with Mike's team to tournaments throughout Idaho, Utah and Montana, with special trips to Seattle and Denver. In 1989, Dad and his dear friend and fellow deacon Rick Bonney became coaches of a group of U-14 boys who became very dear to our family. He and Rick felt that it was a tremendous way to give back to the community and the sport that had been so good to their families. Being a coach was a great blessing to dad, as frequently trips to soccer tournaments became family camping trips, picnics with close friends, chances to go see museums or historic monuments. It was especially fun going to tournaments where Mike's team was playing and Jim and Dan - who was now in Pocatello - were each coaching their own team. Even after he stopped coaching in the early 90s, Jim could be always seen on weekends at the fields, watching the local teams play whether he knew kids on the teams or not. It was always his dream to watch his grandchildren play soccer before he died. This past fall, he was able to watch his 5-year-old granddaughter, Jennifer, play soccer. Now he will be on the sidelines of each of the kids' games. Soccer has been a time of tremendous fellowship and friendship.
Throughout his life, Jim was a very religious and deeply spiritual person. When he was just a baby on his mother's lap, a minister prophesied that Jim would grow up to be a minister. As a young boy, wherever the family went, they were always heavily involved at church, with Jim and his sisters participating in all the youth activities. Jim said he remembered MaryDee from Presbyterian Youth Camp before they met again in college. From his time in Vietnam, Jim remembered an Easter communion service where through the sacrament, he felt one with all Christian peoples throughout the world. After Vietnam, the family became members of the First Christian Church, where Jim was able to preach occasionally in his capacity as a deacon. He also became involved with the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship, the Gideons, Bible studies and an interdenominational prayer group that later became the Tree of Life Prayer group at Holy Rosary Church. Soon he was asked by the pastor at Holy Rosary to teach the Bible study there - although he was not even Catholic. At the Easter vigil in 1979, Jim and MaryDee joined the Roman Catholic Church. He began training for the diaconate. Jim and MaryDee became spirituality coordinators for the diaconate training center in eastern Idaho. On July 16, 1984, he was ordained a deacon by the Most Reverend Sylvester Treinen at Holy Rosary. He loved his role as a deacon - proclaiming God's word and serving God's people. He and his homilies will be remembered for their passion, their embrace and their humor. (St. Olaf watch over us.)
As a deacon, he was able to serve as the spiritual director for several retreats - including a Cursillo last spring which Dan attended - a tremendous blessing for both of them. He really enjoyed teaching the young people's confirmation classes - including his son, Michael's. Jim also had the opportunity to baptize his grandchildren. Jacob was baptized last fall when Jim's cancer was in remission - a real gift from God. He also became chaplain for Boy Scout Troop 310. Recently, he became a 4th Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus - their highest honor.
Jim, we will miss you.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Julius Burton and Ruth Muriel; his older brother, John (Orace); his older sister, Margaret; and his infant brother, William Burton. He is survived by his wife, MaryDee; his older sister, Donna Grace; his younger sisters, Esther Marie and Ruth Louise; his sons, Daniel James (wife, Camille Cutler) and Michael David; and four wonderful grandchildren, Jennifer Kay, Sean Michael, James Jeffrey and Jacob Scott.
A vigil service was held on Friday, March 5, 1999, at 7 p.m. in the main chapel at Christ the King Church (1690 E. 17th, corner of Woodruff), with Deacon Rick Bonney officiating. The family met with friends on Friday evening immediately after the vigil in the adjoining day chapel until 9 p.m. Jim's body remained in state throughout the night with an honor guard provided by the Knights of Columbus. The doors of Christ the King were open throughout the night, welcoming all who wished to reflect and pray during this time.
The funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 6, 1999, at 1 p.m. in the main chapel at Christ the King Church with Reverend Tim O'Toole officiating.
Jim will be buried in his family plot at the Ucon Cemetery following the services, with the Veterans of Foreign Wars performing a military burial. After the graveside services, friends and family are welcome to join us at 4:30 p.m. for a light dinner in the Christ the King Parish Center.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to Christ the King Church, where they will be used to help those in need.
