Spence A. Dewey, 77, Orofino
Spence A. Dewey was born in Deweyville, Utah on Feb. 2, 1926 to Arlen G. Dewey and Fern Rainey Dewey. He passed away peacefully at his Orofino home Saturday, Dec. 20, 2003 at the age of 77. Spence met and married a wonderful young lady by the name of Pauline (Pat) Packer of Fielding, Utah, Aug. 7, 1946. Spence had a successful career as an appraiser for the Federal Highway Administration, but always longed to return to the Idaho backcountry where he served with the U.S. Forest Service as a "fire lookout" during the summers while he attended Utah State University. In 1978 that dream came true and he and Pat returned to Orofino to capture the romance of those youthful days in the northern Idaho backcountry. Spence loved to hunt and fish and spent many memorable hours teaching grandchildren the art of "drowning worms". Spence is survived by his sweetheart and best friend of 57 years, Pauline (Charlie, as Dad would call her) of Orofino; his son Dale Dewey and wife Lynne of Boise; four daughters, Jessie Hogan and husband Ed of Clarkston, Wash., Lyn Blacklock and husband James of Suisun, Calif., Jodie McAllister and husband Lynn of Salt Lake City, UT, and Diane Nicholas and husband Daniel of Frankfort, Ill.; two brothers, Wade of Logan, UT and Jed of Missoula, Mont.; two sisters, Jean serving a mission in Tennessee and JoAn of Logan, UT; 16 grandchildren and one great-grandson. His parents and one brother, Doug, preceded him in death. A viewing was held at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel Dec. 29, followed by a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery. A memorial service will be held this spring to celebrate the life of Spence A. Dewey.

Viola L. Roby, 86, Kamiah
Viola L. Roby of Kamiah died of pneumonia Dec. 23, 2003 at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood. She was 86. Viola was born Jan. 25, 1917 at Myrtle, the daughter of Frank and Alvina Altmiller. She moved with her family to Bruce's Eddy near Orofino at age three and lived there all her childhood except for two years when her family moved to Cathcart, Wash. She received her schooling there and at Ahsahka and Orofino. She married Richard Roby at Lewiston, May 29, 1934. They made their home at Bruce's Eddy until moving to Kamiah in 1937 where they lived except from 1941 to 1943, when they moved to Coeur d'Alene. They then returned to Kamiah. Her husband preceded her in death in 1989. She did sewing for the public for several years and later worked in a clothing store in Kamiah. She taught 4-H sewing for five years. She most enjoyed gardening, sewing, camping and she always planned several family picnics and gatherings throughout the years. She exhibited many prize-winning articles at the Lewis ad Idaho county fairs over the years, including sewing, garden produce and baked and canned foods. She always cared for a lovely flower garden. Survivors include her daughter, Dorothy Kidder of Kamiah; son Lawrence Roby of Salem, Ore.; three grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She has two brothers, Jake and Fred Altmiller, both of Orofino; and two sisters, Mary Kelley of Portland, Ore., and Anna McIntire of Kamiah. Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 27 at Trenary Funeral Home in Kooskia. Burial followed at the Kamiah Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of Trenary Funeral Home.

Clay Edward Hill, 15, Nezperce
Clay Edward Hill died Monday, June 30, 2003 as a result of a tragic car accident near Gifford. He was born in Lewiston July 4, 1987 and is survived by his parents Roy and Shannon Hill at the family home in Nezperce. Clay attended Nezperce schools beginning in Kindergarten through his sophomore year of high school He is r-membered for his kind, friendly personality. He was a very cheerful person who worked very hard to maintain high grades. One of his proudest accomplishments was raising a Grand Champion steer as part of his FFA career. He loved to spend his free time outside. He was an avid skier and fisherman. He rode his motorcycle every time the opportunity arose. He pitched in to help maintain the track at Mohlerso that he and his fellow classmates would have the privilege of riding there. His parents were his greatest heroes and role models. One activity that they shared with many family friends was trap shooting. Clay recently won the Junior 16-yd Shoot at the Nezperce Gun Club and he was also the Sub-Junior 16-yd Champion at the 2003 Father's Day Shoot. In addition to his parents he is survived by a sister, Jami Johnson; grandmothers Bea Johnson and Genevieve Hill; uncles Daren McCann, Jim Wooderchak, and Wayne Hill; aunts Stephanie Wooderchak, Shirley Hill and Dianna Hill; and their families who all love Clay and miss him very much. A scholarship fund will be established at the Nezperce Branch of the US Bank, P.O. Box 368, Nezperce, Idaho 83543. Contributions will be accepted in the name of Clay Hill Memorial Scholarship. Contributions may also be left at any local US Bank. Funeral services were held Monday at Nezperce High School Gym. Burial followed at Nezperce Community Cemetery. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Leroy Kannada, 79
Leroy Kannada of White Bird died Monday, July 7 at St. Mary's Hospital in Cottonwood. Leroy was born Jan. 4, 1924 at Little Rock, Ark. He started school in Arkansas and then the family moved to Wenatchee, Wash., where he graduated from high school. After high school he served in the U.S. Air Force during WWII as a pilot flying B-24 bombers. Following his discharge he moved to Idaho, where he worked as a heavy equipment operator and logger in the Weippe, Pierce and White Bird areas. He married Bonnie Brumley Oct. 9, 1992. He retired in 1999. Leroy enjoyed fishing, hunting and doing mechanics. Survivors include his wife Bonnie at the family home; daughters Debbie Haskins of Cascade, Lillian Scott of Caldwell, Toni Campbell of Clear Lake, Calif. and Patty Hosman of Des Moines, IA; stepsons John Brumley of Coeur d'Alene, Nathan Brumley of Meridian and Bonner Brumley of White Bird; 11 grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; a brother William Tidmore of Oklahoma and three sisters, Lillian Hatcher of Okla., Cortez Pike and Lavada McCarthy, both of Wash. A graveside inurnment service will be held Friday, July 11 at the White Bird Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of the Blackmer Funeral Home of Grangeville.

Anna Bertha (Wolf) Warner, 97, Kamiah
Anna Bertha (Wolf) Warner, a longtime Kamiah resident, passed away July 1, 2002 at Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born Nov. 19, 1904 at Menominie, Wis. to Herman and Bertha Wolf, she moved west with her family in the winter of 1914 and homesteaded in the Glenwood area. After graduating, Anna went to St. Maries and worked in a laundry. She moved to Moose Jaw, Canada for a few years before returning to the states and helping her aunt cook in logging camps. She married Erza Warner June 25, 1929 at Winchester. They lived in several towns in the area until they bought a house in Kamiah in 1940. Anna enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, crocheting, embroidering and entering many things at state and county fairs, where she won several blue ribbons. She was very active until her later years. Survivors include three daughters, Louise Woods of Kamiah, Verla Wilsey of Kooskia and Ida May Guetzloe of Kalama, WA; a sister, Rose West of Kamiah; a brother, Benny Wolf of Orofino; eight grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday at Faith Lutheran Church. Burial followed at Kamiah Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Blackmer Funeral Home in Grangeville. Memorials may be made to the Kamiah Grange or to Faith Lutheran Church, Kamiah (ID 83536).

Howard B. Barnes, 91, Spokane
Howard B. Barnes, a longtime Lewiston and Orofino resident, passed away Saturday, June 29, 2002, in Spokane from complications of old age. Howard was born May 12, 1911 in Post Falls, ID, the son of Hezekiah and Zola Berry Barnes. He married Dorothea Rae Potts in Spokane Sept. 28, 1935. He was a "jack of all trades," working in the woods, driving trucks, and as a mechanic. He worked for several years for L. Cardiff Sawmill at Pierce. They made their homes in Pierce, Greer, and Lewiston. After Zola died a few years ago, Howard moved to Spokane. He is survived by one son, Howard B. Barnes, Jr. of Seattle; one daughter, Christina Jo Heindel of Kaukauna, Wis.; four grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren. A sister, Jo Duhrkoff of Omak, WA, also survives. Cremation has taken place and there will be no service at the request of the deceased.

Carl Hoffman, 69
Carl E. Hoffman of Orofino died Friday, June 28, 2002 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. Carl was born May 8, 1933 in Lewiston, the son of Edwin J. and Clarice M. Moore Hoffman. His grandparents were pioneer settlers in Asotin County. As an adult, Carl drove a truck, starting out with Jerry Milling Company in Asotin. He drove for Dudley Boat and Trailer in Seattle until his retirement. After retiring, he traveled around the United States, finally settling in Orofino to be near his sister and nephews, Roy and Aaron Thornton. Survivors include three stepchildren, Daniel Hanson of Marysville, WA, Diane Sarno of Fife, WA, and Steven Hoffman of Roy, WA. He is also survived by twin sisters, Janice Ball of Pendleton, Ore. and Joanne Lee of Orofino and a half-sister, Theda Killgore of Clarkston. He had many nieces and nephews and several step-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Aug. 24 at Selway Falls on the Selway River.

Charles H. Schneider, 78
Charles H. Schneider died July 7 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center, Lewiston. He was born in McCook, Neb. on Sept. 20, 1923 to Paul and Mary Schneider. He had two brothers and a sister. He and Virginia Hiersekorn were married on Oct. 20, 1942 in Lebanon, Kansas. They had four children. He served with the Army Air Corps during WWII and worked for the Bureau of Reclamation and the Corps of Engineers coming to Orofino to work on Dworshak Dam. He moved his family to the Orofino area from the Tri-Cities. He had also worked on the Alaska Pipeline and in Africa and Saudi Arabia with independent construction companies as a surveyor. While in Africa the safaris were a great highlight of his life. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. He is survived by a sister, Betty Hiatt of McCook, NE; daughters Kayana Bacus of Peck, and Jeri Russell of Clarkston; two sons, Steven Schneider of Ripley, MS., and Gary Schneider of Lacey, WA; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A military graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery on Friday, July 12 at 11 a.m. Visitation will be at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel, Thursday, July 11 from 4-6 p.m. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Alice May Fry, 76, Southwick
Alice May Fry of Southwick passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. Alice was born Sept. 8, 1926, in Southwick, to Milton and Elvira Benjamin. Alice married Ervin Angus Fry in the Benjamin home. Her grandfather, a United Bretheren minister, presided over the May 21, 1945 ceremony. Alice graduated as salutatorian from Kendrick High School in 1944. In 1962 she earned a diploma in elementary education from Lewiston Normal School and in 1971 earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education from the University of Idaho in Moscow. Alice taught nine years at Orofino Grade School and 18 years at Cavendish. She was active in Sunday School, church camp, missions and other church activities. She attended Juliaetta Nazarene Church, the former Southwick Community Church and the Clarkston Wesleyan Church. She was an accomplished pianist, organist and accordionist, and taught private piano lessons. Alice is survived by her husband, Ervin Fry of Southwick; a son, Eldon Fry of White Bear Lake, Minn.; nine grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Verlin Benjamin of Juliaette and Ronald Benjamin of Asotin. The funeral was held Saturday at Malcolm's Funeral Home in Lewiston. Memorial donations may be sent to the Gideons Bible Society International, 2900 Lebanon Rd., Nashville, TN 37214; the Kendrick-Juliaetta Ambulance Fund, P.O. Louise Anna Turcek, 87
Louise Anna Turcek died of congestive heart failure July 9, 2002 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino. She was born to Louis Ponozzo and Exilda Gagnea Ponozzo Dec. 8, 1914 in Iron River, Mich. She married Anthony Turcek Nov. 21, 1933 in Marinette, Wis. Louise worked for Tinkeroy and R.J. Spaulding Company in Evanston, Ill. for many years. After moving to Seattle in 1977 after the death of her husband, Louise moved to Spokane and then to Brookside Landing in Orofino in 2001. In April 2002 she moved into Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation due to failing health. Louise was known for her quick wit, generosity and love of her family, the babies in particular. Survivors include her daughter Antoinette Turcek, Spokane, WA and her brother, Donald Ponozzo of Zephyrhillis, Fl. She leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews in Wisconsin and Michigan. Those in the local area are Dave Ponozzo, Pam Steinbruecker and Beverly Wilson, Orofino; Mike Ponozzo, Winchester, Larry Mueller, Superior, Mont., Donna Collins, Nancy Richardson, Lewiston, Sandy Ponozzo, Spokane, Paul Ponozzo, Puyallup, WA, and Terry Ann Betschard, Winnemucca, Nev. Services were held Saturday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Orofino. In the fall, she will be put to rest besider her husband, Anthony, in Iron River, Mich. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Eugene Williams, 86, Arizona
Floyd "Slim" Eugene Williams was born June 14, 1916 at Fraser to Wallace M. and Marie Williams. He passed away July 7, 2002. Floyd served two enlistments in World War II. He was a lineman during the invasion on Iwo Jima and witnessed the flag raising on Mt. Suraboche. After discharge, he returned to Idaho, where he worked at various jobs, including packing, sawmill work and later he went to work for the United States Forest Service, from which he retired in 1976. He and his wife, Ann Jones, spent winters in Wickenburg, Ariz. for several years before moving there permanently. Floyd was widowed in 1998. Floyd married Helen Elizabeth Hinton Jan. 1, 2000. They made their home in Wickenburg until his death. He is survived by his wife at the family home, three nephews, Wallace J. Williams of Pierce, Douglas Williams of Aberdeen, WA, and Dennis Williams, Orofino; five nieces, Nellie Borst, Tokeland, WA, Sharon Buttenhoff, Craigmont, Marjorie Hardman, Greer, Nadine Guslak, Ore., and Nancy Stout, Orofino. Most of his summer months were spent in the Pierce and Orofino areas. He never lost his love of trees, animals, and his friends in those communities.

Alice Crouch, 74, former resident
Alice Crouch entered into eternity to be with her Lord on July 11, 2002, at her home near Hunters, WA. She was born on Oct. 14, 1927 in Ashton, ID, the third of four daughters of Jesse Edith (Upchurch) and David Floyd Niman. Her family moved to the Orofino area in 1935. Alice married Oscar Cartwright in Orofino in 1945. She lived there on the family farm until 1975, when she moved to Lewiston. She married Charles Crouch on Feb. 21, 1976 and worked at the Clarkston High School. They moved to Hunters, WA in 1992. Alice is survived by her husband, Charles of Hunters; son James Cartwright and wife Barbara of Hunters; three daughters, Ann Dennis and husband Wayne of Buhl, ID, Betty Ward, Logan, UT, and Cathy Ward and husband Robert of Kooskia; a sister Edith Bowen of Lewiston; her dear companion and caregiver Nancy Henderson; 22 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and a step-son Steve Crouch of Black Eagle, MT. Funeral services were held July 16 at the Hunters, WA Columbia Heights Assembly of God Church, with burial at Greenwood Park Cemetery. Danekas Funeral Chapel of Colville, WA was in charge of arrangements.

Mena S. Engstrom, 84, former resident
Mena S. Engstrom passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2002 in Boise, ID. Mena was born Dec. 12, 1917 in Provo, UT to D. George and Minnie Shorten. She was raised and educated in Ogden, UT. She married Lamar "Swede" Engstrom March 15, 1940 and together they had two sons and one daughter. Following their marriage they moved to Tempe, AZ, where Mena worked as a bookkeeper. She returned to Ogden when her husband entered the service and later joined him for a time in Mississippi, returning again to Ogden during Swede's overseas tour of duty. Following Swede's discharge they lived for a time in Boise and then Pendleton, OR before moving to Orofino in 1955. There they purchased and operated the Orofino Creamery until selling the business in 1971. Afterwards they managed the Konkolville Motel for eight years, then moved to Salem, OR in 1989 to be near their daughter and family. They settled in Boise in 1992. Mena was active in the community during her years in Orofino. Her favorite pasttime was spending time with her granddaughters and being involved in their activities. She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Swede, of Boise; two sons, Chris Engstrom of Washington, UT, Charles Engstrom of Olympia WA, and daughter Patti Wilson of Boise; eight grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and a brother Ralph Shorten of Washington, UT. Graveside services will be held Friday morning at the Huntsville City Cemetery in Utah. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Idaho Commission for the Blind, 341 W. Washington, Boise, ID 83702.

Floyd K. Chapman, 78
Floyd K. Chapman of Weippe died Sunday, July 14, 2002 at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston. Services were held Wednesday at Malcolm's Brower-Wann Memorial Chapel in Lewiston.

LeAnn Sanders, 32
LeAnn Ross Sanders of Powell Butte, Ore. died July 15, 2002 in a Portland, Ore. hospital of a sudden illness. LeAnn was the daughter of Mary Noble Houlate of Boise and James Sanders of Lewiston. Her survivors include her stepfather, Cameron Houlgate of Boise, and her maternal grandparents, Emery and Nancy Noble of Orofino. A memorial service is pending at Powell Butte Community Church.

Raynelle Jeannette Goodwin George, 54
Raynelle Jeannette Goodwin George, passed away June 27, 2003 with her family at her bedside in Eureka, Calif. Raynelle was born May 12, 1949 to Robert M. and Evelyn Goodwin in Eureka. She graduated from Eureka Senior High School in 1967 and moved to Ukiah, Calif. to work at Mendocino State Hospital, where she met and married Michael D. Mitchell and had her only son. She moved to Napa, Calif., where she received her degree in nursing at Napa Valley College, going on to be Assistant Director of Nurses at Napa State Hospital. She later re-married, to Donald J. George and moved to Orofino after retiring, where she built her home and lived for seven years. Raynelle then moved to Lewiston, where she pursued an interest in photography, and photographed every county seat in the state, intermingled with photographs of the entire Lewis and Clark Trail from the entry into Idaho as well as to its conclusion at Fort Clatsop. She donated copies of these to schools. She then welcomed her granddaughter into this world. Her next pursuit in 2002, was to run for the governorship of the State of Idaho, but was unable to unseat the incumbent Dirk Kempthorne. Raynelle enjoyed traveling, including the Bahamas, Brazil and Zimbabwe, Africa; fishing; swimming; charity work such as becoming a candy striper when she was younger, and especially spending time with her family. Survivors include her son, Michael D. Mitchell; granddaughter Alyssa L. Mitchell of Clarkston, Wash.; her parents Robert M. and Evelyn V. Goodwin; brothers David M. Goodwin, Robert D. Goodwin, all of Orofino; and sister Sharon V. Stewart of Fairfield, Calif.; nephews and many aunts and uncles. Arrangements were under the direction of Chapel of the Ferns-Cooper Mortuary, Eureka, Calif.

Donald L. Fine, 87, Kamiah resident
A memorial service for Donald L. Fine will be held Saturday, Aug. 2 at 1 p.m. at the Kamiah Cemetery in Kamiah. Don passed away Monday, May 5, 2003 in Grangeville at Grangeville Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was a long-time resident of Kamiah. Don was born Aug. 28, 1915 in Peck to Harry and Ozellia Bloodsworth Fine. He grew up in the Peck area and was a truck driver and logger. He can be seen in National Geographic Magazine photographs in a feature about the log drives from this area. Don was also on the final log drive on the North Fork and Clearwater Rivers to Lewiston. Don loved to hunt and fish and in his later years enjoyed flowers, gardening and canning. He married Edna Knutson Feb. 15, 1941 and they later divorced. Don and Edna had four children. On Dec. 24, 1969 Don married Edith Grove. After her death in 1997 his health declined. Don is survived by his daughters Darlene Fine Cannon of Grangeville, Mary Ellen Sater of Lewiston and Donna Wilson of Joseph, Ore., a brother Deryle "Dude" Fine of Orofino; a sister Tillie Smith of Lewiston; 10 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Trenary Funeral Home.

Donald R. Ponozzo, 84, former Clearwater County Commissioner
Donald R. Ponozzo died at his home in Zephyrhillis, FL Tuesday evening, July 23, 2002. Don was born Feb. 27, 1918 in Iron Richer, Mich. to Louis and Exilda Gagnae Ponozzo. He attended schools in Iron River before joining the U.S. Army Medical Corps, where he fought in the Pacific Theater of Operations. After marrying Ingrid Ockerstrom in 1941 at Milwaukee, WI, he moved to Idaho in 1948 and entered the logging business with Don's brother, Les Ponozzo. Don sold the business after Les passed away in 1973 and became District Manager for B.J. Carney for six years. After Ingrid's death in 1990, Don married Betty Johnson in 1993 in Wassau, WI, after which they moved to Zephyrhillis, FL. Don served on the Orofino City Council for six years and was a Clearwater County commissioner for 14 years. He was chairman for 13 of those years. Don was also a high-ranking member of numerous other organizations, serving as chairman or president on many. He enjoyed golf and was known for his prowess in baseball. Survivors include his wife, Betty of Zephyrhillis, FL; daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Gordon Wilson of Orofino; three grandsons, Shannon Wilson of Lewiston and Eric Wilson and Sven Wilson of Orofino; three great-grandchildren, Kristen Wilson, Clarkston, WA, Brandon Wilson and Kecia Wilson, Orofino; numerous nieces and nephews, among these current Clearwater County Commissioner Dave Ponozzo; and a sister-in-law Doris Ponozzo, of Orofino. Funeral services are pending at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. Burial will be made at Lewis-Clark Memorial Gardens in Lewiston. LeAnn Ross Sanders, 33, Boise
LeAnn Ross Sanders of Boise went to be with our Lord Monday, July 15, 2002. She passed over at Willamette Falls Hosptail in Oregon City, Ore. after a very brief illness. LeAnn was born July 12, 1969 in Lewiston, Idaho to Jim and Mary Sanders and raised in Council, Culdesac and Cambridge, Idaho. She graduated from Cambridge High School in 1987. She was the granddaughter of Nancy and Emery Noble of Orofino. LeAnn attended Albertson College in Caldwell and the University of Idaho. In 1991 she moved to Oregon and graduated with a bachelor's of arts degree in Christian Youth Ministries from George Fox College in Newberg, Ore. She was employed at the Oregon State Capitol for several years. She was a devoted Christian and avid outdoors person who loved all God's creatures, large and small, particularly horses. She traveled to New Zealand, Fiji, Hawaii and numerous other places in the U.S. and spent many summers working in Yellowstone National Park, Hughs White Water Adventures, Rock-A-Way Church Camp, and Twin Peaks Dude Ranch. LeAnn had recently enrolled at Boise State University, where she planned on getting education degrees in special education and physical education. She is survived by her father, Jim Sanders of Lewiston, and her mother, Mary Houlgate of Boise; her grandparents, Wilson and Arline Sanders of Lewiston; Emery and Nancy Noble of Orofino; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. A memorial service for LeAnn was held July 19, 2002 at Powell Butte Community Church in Powell Butte, Ore. Walter Carr, 94, Emmett
Walter Carr was born July 9, 1907 in Potlatch, ID into the Fisher and Alice Carr family. He passed on to his rest on June 4, 2002 at Emmett, ID. Walter was the youngest child of the West Virginia Carr family who came to North Idaho in the 1880s. He was reared on the Weippe Prairie by his adult sister, Nettie, and her husband, Harvey Wilson, as Walter's mother had died when he was four years old. After graduating from the Lewiston Normal School, Walter and his wife Elsie moved to Emmett, where he resided until his death. Into this family were born three children, Ernie Carr, Dixie Dykman and Rick Carr, all of the Boise area. There will be a graveside service at the Weippe Cemetery on Aug. 10 at 11 a.m.

Zula Vail Jones, 94, Orofino
Zula Vail Jones passed away Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation from complications due to age. She was born Jan. 11, 1908 in Burlingame, Calif. to Otis and Myra (Webster) Vail. Zula graduated from Muir High School in Pasadena, Calif., then from Huntington Memorial School of Nursing in 1929. She was a retired registered nurse and lived in California and Arizona before moving to Orofino in 1989. She married Monroe H. Jones Feb. 2, 1946 in Pasadena, Calif. She is survived by a son, Richard Jones and his wife Cynthia, of Orofino; two grandchildren, Erica Forster and Joshua Jones, both of Nampa, and one great-grandchild, Nathan James Forster. Zula enjoyed travel, camping, ocean beaches, rock hounding in the desert, and reading. A graveside service was held for family and friends Monday at Riverside Cemetery in Orofino. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.
