Robert Lee McFall of Orofino died June 27, 2004 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation. He was 77. Arrangements are under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.

John L. Townsend, Sr.
John Lynn Townsend, Sr., died at his home in Orofino, June 26, 2004. He was 84. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

John Frederick Hoel, 62
With a mighty battle cry the heavens opened up and welcomed a great man. John Frederick Hoel, 62, beloved husband, father, son, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away Thursday, June 10 with his family at his side. He fought many medical battles over the past thirty years, with his final valiant battle with cancer. He was born September 9, 1941 to Elwood F. Head and Georgetta Caudill in Dayton, Ohio. After high school he joined the United States Air Force where he served during the Vietnam War and as an Honor Guide to the President in Washington DC. While stationed at Edwards Air force Base in California, he worked on rocket boosters. He served on the Kern County Search and Rescue in California and the Clearwater Search and Rescue in Idaho. He held many rolls in life working with the 4-H, Boy Scouts of America, Little Britches Rodeo, and Chamber of Commerce. He was the President of the Idaho Trappers Association, a proud member of the NRA, and many others. After serving in the Air Force, John worked in the private industry and later for the USDA Forest Service, where he retired as the Regional Telecommunications Manager in 1998. John married his sweetheart, Sharon Francis Park, on May 27, 1962 in Las Vegas, Nev. John and Sharon were later sealed in the Los Angeles Temple in 1978. Just a week ago, May 30, 2004, John and Sharon renewed their wedding vows at the home of their son in the presence of all their children, grandchildren and one great-grandson. He was a member of the Clearfield Wedgewood Ward of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. John was born of Cherokee Indian decent and took great pride of his Native American heritage. He loved nature and found great peace "listening to the rain". He loved sharing stories and culture with his children and grandchildren; going to pow-wows, mountain man rendezvous, camping, target practicing, hunting, but most of all he loved time with his family around him. We all have endearing names for each other, many assigned by him, some Native American. To our Poppasan, Trapper, Toad and Tsalagi Unalil (Cherokee friend) "break trail for us" from your Moose, Poqueta, Teal eye, Buck, Jahnee, Armpit, Amazon, One-who-walks-tall, Car wash, scooty-man and all the rest of us. Survivors include, his wife Sharon; his daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Doug Wickum, Pampanga, Phillippines, Patty Hoel, Ogden, Utah, Karen (Gordon) Carter, Mead, Wash., Janet (Charles) Thorsted, Ogden, UT; one son and daughter-in-law, Drew and (Elizabeth) Hoel, Hooper, UT; eight grandchildren, Stacy Wickum Mohammed (Hash), Kylea Carter, Jonathon Thorsted, Gehrig Carter, Justin Hoel, Gericho Carter, Morgan Thorsted, Jessica Hoel; and one great-grandson, Jinan Mohammed. Also surviving is his brother, Ron Hoel and countless friends, many whom called him dad. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services were held June 13 at Myers Mortuary, 250 N. Fairfield Rd in Layton, Utah. Services concluded with a mountain man black powder salute and the presentation of the United States Flag. Cremation was under the direction of Myers Mortuary. Willard J. Hansen, 65, Pierce
Willard J. Hansen, 65, of Pierce, died Feb. 23, 2004 at St. Joseph's Regional Medical Center in Lewiston after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was residing at the Orchards Rehabilitation Center in Lewiston at the time of his death. Willard came to Idaho in 1989, moving from Michigan. He loved hunting, fishing, wildlife and people. Survivors include a daughter, Carol (Blaine) Rivard and three sons, Vernon, Peter and Jody, all of Michigan; grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also two sisters, Dorothy Ladd and Dixie (Charles) Sharrard of Idaho; one sister, Gloria (Emil) Anderson and one brother, Douglas, both of Michigan. His parents, John and Amy Hansen of Pierce preceded him in death in 1989 and 2000. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held.

Mike Malarchick, 82, Oregon
Memorial services were held Saturday for Mike Malarchick, who died Feb. 19, 2004 in Tualatin, Ore. He was 82. Mike was born March 26, 1921 in Warren, Ohio to Joseph and Anna (Stuhura) Malarchick. He joined the 3C's at the age of 14 serving age 17, spending most of his time in central Idaho. He then returned to Ohio, entering the Army in 1942 where he fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in 1946, receiving the bronze star. Mike married Yvonne Grace, Aug. 13, 1949. She preceded him in death in 1999. From 1948 to 1972 he worked as operation foreman at Umatilla Army Depot, supervising roads and grounds. During this time he was responsible for re-introducing antelope at the Depot and seeing that they flourished. He was relocated to Orofino as foreman of maintenance of roads, parking, storage and recreational sites at Dworshak Dam. He then worked for Hanford in Richland, Wash., retiring in 1988 and moving to Portland, Ore. He had pride in doing a job well and with integrity. He had a sense of humor and a quick wit. He was a volunteer fireman in Idaho and also helped fight wildland fires in Eastern Oregon. He loved sports and excelled in baseball, playing in a league at the depot. He also enjoyed bowling, deep sea fishing and crabbing. He loved children and enjoyed playing Santa Claus for the church and coaching little league. He was a member of the Steering Committee for Tigard Senior Center, St. Anthony's Catholic Church and served on the Tualatin Water Board. Survivors include daughter Kristine Aiken, Echo, Ore.; sons Joseph Malarchick, Portland, Ore., Mario Malarchick, Camano Island, Wash., Tim Malarchick, Gig harbor, Wash.; sister Rose Kile; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Monty Schilling, 58, former resident
Monty Schilling, 58, of Sinclair, WY died of cancer Feb. 10, 2004 at Rawlins, WY. Cremation has taken place and a memorial will be held at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, March 7 in the banquet room at the Clearwater 12 Motel at Kamiah. A potluck meal will follow. Monty was born May 6, 1945 at Pasco, WA to Betty Schilling and the late Earl Schilling. He attended school in Orofino and worked for numerous persons in this area. He served in the National Guard. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn, of Sinclair and his mother and stepfather, Betty and Jack Mathews of Kamiah, formerly of Ahsahka. Monty is also survived by eight children, Cameron, Abby, Shane, Eddie, Betty Ann, Anna Louise, Monty and Randy Schilling; three brothers, Drex Schilling of Kooskia, Steven Schilling of Lewiston and David Schilling of Missoula, MT and four sisters, Juneal Storm of Lewiston, Mitzi Allen of Ahsahka, Colleen Schilling of Pullman, WA, Dawn Packwood of Clarkston, WA and numerous grandchildren.

Helen Meiburg, 88, Bobbitt Bench
Helen Meiburg, who resided on Bobbitt Bench, died Feb. 25, 2004 a Clearwater Valley Hospital. She was 88. Helen was born Sept. 5, 1915 in Austria to Ernst Adolf Sachse and Juliane Zaiser. In her younger years she worked as a Chef. A long time resident of Bobbitt Bench, Helen is survived by her companion Isidor Schoenmoser and a stepson, Arnold Schoenmoser. Cremation has taken place and no services will be held at her request. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Morris Guralnick, 92
Morris Guralnick of Orofino died March 15, 2004 at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center in Lewiston. He was 92. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, March 18 at Riverside Cemetery. Family and friends are invited to a covered dish luncheon following the service. The location will be announced. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Millie Johnson, 72, attended Orofino school
Mildred J. (Millie) Johnson died March 10, 2004, at Orchards Rehabilitation and Care Center in Lewiston. She was 72. Millie was born June 5, 1931 in Wabeno, Wis. to Earl and Bessie May Adams. The family moved to Orofino in 1935. She attended Piper School through the eighth grade and Orofino High School. She married Charles S. Johnson May 25, 1948 at Orofino. She was a grocery clerk at Hay's Store in Orofino until the family moved to Lewiston in 1962. She then checked groceries at McPherson's and Warehouse Foods on Snake River Ave. She moved to Clarkston in 1969. Millie was active in the Rebekah Lodge in Orofino and Lewiston and state president in 1979. She was a member of Eastern Star in Clarkston and the Daughters of the Nile in Lewiston. Survivors include her husband Charles of Lewiston; three sons, Douglas Johnson of Mountain Home, Steven Johnson of Hot Springs, Ark, and Jeff Johnson of East Wenatchee, Wash.; two sisters, Norma Devlin of Lewiston and Donna Ehrsam of Clarkston; three brothers, Roger Adams and Delbert Adams, both of Lewiston and James Adams of Pocatello; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Robert Adams. A memorial service was held Saturday at Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston.

Betty Mae Olson, 82
Betty Mae Olson, 82, died March 10, 2004 at St. Maries, Idaho. She was born November 21, 1921 to Milo and Nellie Jilson Newman at Whitebird, Idaho, She grew up at Zilla, Wash. and graduated from high school there with the class of 1939. She then attended business college at Yakima, Wash. She married Marvin Faris Sr. in November, 1941. She lived in Zilla while her husband served during World War II. After the war they lived in the Tri-City area where she was a homemaker. She went to work for Battelle Memorial Industries in the mid-1970's at Richland, Wash. Her husband died in 1974. She married Oliver Olson Jan. 28, 1978 at Pasco, Wash. and retired from Battelle Memorial Industries later that same year. She moved to Orofino in 1989 and to Tensed, Idaho in April 2003. She enjoyed camping and reading. She is survived by her husband at the family home at Tensed, her son and daughter-in-law, Marvin and Kathy Faris Jr. of Spokane, and son Milo Faris of Palmer, Alaska; step-daughters, Nancy VanAllen of Portland, Angie Murray of Kennewick, and Elaine Jensen of Seattle; her sister Cleo Swigart of Shasta City, Calif; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a brother, Guy Newman. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Family and friends will be notified of place and time or call 208-274-2153. Richard Earle Bayman, 74, Pierce
Richard Earle Bayman, aka Dick or Papa Smurf, 74, was born to Elmer Earle and Edna Clarrissa Bayman, Nov. 15, 1929 in Dickinson, ND. He entered into eternal rest April 25, 2004 in Spokane, WA. He considered Pierce his hometown. After more than 40 years there, everyone was family in his eyes. Dick was a member of the Timberline Lions Club and served as its president for 13 years. He loved country drives, hunting, fishing, family trips and visiting with friends old or new. Dick retired after 33 years of dedicated service from Potlatch in Pierce. He is survived by his father, Elmer Earle Bayman of Lewiston; brother Edward Nelson Bayman of Troy; daughters Louise Ann Bayman of Spokane, Melissa Marie and husband Scott W. Kohn of Dallas, Ore. and Sherra Del and husband Ben Gilbert of Airway Heights, Wash.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and his adopted family of Sally O'Brien, her five children and six grandchildren. A memorial service was held May 1 at the Pierce Community Center. Pastor Mike Potratz delivered a beautiful eulogy and Carol Potratz bid him farewell, singing Amazing Grace. A luncheon by the Timberline Lions Club was held afterward.

Verlon Dewaine Lyons, 73, Weippe
Verlon Dewaine Lyons died May 10, 2004 at the Idaho State Veterans Home in Lewiston. He was 73. Verlon was born July 26, 1930 at Troy to W. Edward and Lilly (Dillman) Lyons. He received his education at the Helmer school. He married Carol Jean Gransbury Nov. 14, 1953. While serving in the U.S. Army for two years, he attended Motor Maintenance School at Camp Chaffee, Ark. He loved being a mechanic and refurbished several vehicles. Building was another of his hobbies, as well as remodeling. A logger and millworker, he worked at Twin Feathers Mill in Kamiah, logged for his father, hauling and loading logs in Pierce, and working for Potlatch at Jaype. He was especially kind to people, loving to help them when he could, especially his family. Survivors include his wife Carol Lyons of Weippe, two daughters, Debbie Puksta and Shirley McFeron, both of Weippe; two sons, Ron Lyons of Orofino and Mike Umphenour of Weippe; eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A graveside service was held Saturday at Riverside Cemetery in Orofino. Pastor Paul Cross officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Pine Hills Funeral Chapel.

Fred Arnholtz, 64, Orofino, Costa Rica
Memorial services for Ralph Fred Arnholtz, Jr. will be held at the lodge at Big Eddy Marina at Dworshak Dam at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, with a potluck to follow. Fred passed away May 14, 2004 in Grecia, Costa Rica. He was 64. Fred was born Aug. 9, 1939 in Burlington, Wash. to Ralph Fred Arnholtz and Dorothy Alene Morgan Arnholtz. He attended schools in Granite Falls and Georgetown, Wash. in his early years before moving to Nampa, where he graduated from Nampa High School in 1957. He was a member of the football and track teams. After high school, Fred attended the University of Idaho. He married Ruth I. Tidwell Nov. 27, 1958 and they had three children. They were divorced in 1973. There were subsequent marriages to Kathleen Weyel and Ginger Barker that ended in divorce. He worked for Meridian Wood Products and Curtis Circulation Company before beginning a career with Idaho First National Bank in Nampa in 1962. In October 1967, he transferred to the Orofino Branch as operations officer, later becoming manager at the Riverside Branch, also in Orofino. Fred obtained his real estate license and worked in that field for the next 20 years, as well as doing work with his backhoe. He conceived an innovative method for cleaning the pressure relief piping in dams and was successful in obtaining many contracts for cleaning dams. The last several years he divided his time between Orofino and Grecia, Costa Rica. He enjoyed boating, fishing and hunting. Fred loved to travel and was always looking for new adventures. He once spent the winter in the mountains of Costa Rica living and working with goat herders. He also achieved his lifelong dream in Thailand of riding an elephant. Those who knew him would agree, Fred never met a stranger. He often opened his homes both in the States and in Costa Rica to friends from both countries, always offering to be a travel guide, a gracious host, and a good friend. Fred is survived by two daughters, Sharon and husband Mike Larson, Weippe and DeAnn Arnholtz and Mark Switzer, Spokane; a son, Major Michael Arnholtz and wife Donna of Navarre, Fla.; five grandchildren, Michelle King, Boise, Amy Crutcher, Nampa, Derek Arnholtz and M. Stuart Arnholtz of Navarre, Fla. and Michelle Larson of Los Angeles, Calif.; and a great-grandson, Kaden Pate, Nampa; one sister, Pat Fernow of Portland, Ore. and one brother, Tom Arnholtz of Sheridan, Ore. and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Edna Mae Weaver Savage, 87, Kamiah
Edna Mae Weaver Savage passed away May 11, 2004 at her home in Kamiah. She was 87. Edna was born in Harvard to Jack and Nancy Pearl Campbell Weaver on Jan. 7, 1917. Her family grew up in the Black Hills of South Dakota. She met and married Patrick Savage in 1936 at Rapid City, SD. Through their married life they lived in Auburn Wash., where they worked in the shipyards during World War II. They ran a service station in Indian Valley and helped build the Hungry Horse Dam in Montana. They returned to the Black Hills area after each adventure. In 1962, they moved to Kamiah and Edna spent her remaining years there. Her husband Pat passed away in 1974. She cooked in the Kamiah Cafe for 20 years. She worked 20-plus years with the Senior Citizen program for the Forest Service, of which she really enjoyed and was extremely proud. Her greatest pleasures were spending time with her brother, sister and many nieces, nephews, friends and step-grandchildren whenever possible. Edna enjoyed music, painting, reading, quilting, her yard, fishing, hunting and outdoors in general. Survivors include her sister Helen McDonald of Kamiah and Montana; her brother William Weaver of Woodland, many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. She was preceded in death by both her parents, her stepfather Art Ailport and her husband Pat Savage. A graveside service was held Saturday, May 15 at the Kamiah Cemetery.

LeRoy Ackaret, 68
LeRoy David Ackaret, "Forever onto Paradise". LeRoy went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ May 14, 2004. He was 68. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 22, in the Alwin Chapel at Hazen & Jaeger Funeral Home, 1306 N. Monroe St., Spokane, Wash. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Compassion International, P.O. Box 65000, Colorado Springs, CO 80962-9951 (Releasing Children from Poverty).

Ronald "Bud" Adams, 69, Orofino
Ronald "Bud" Adams died Feb. 4, 2003 at Clearwater Valley Hospital. Bud was born March 13, 1933 to Joe Adams and Nellie (Shipley) Adams at Watonga, Okla. He moved with his family from Oklahoma to Idaho as a small child. His father preceded him in death and he was raised by his mother Nellie and her husband Charles Fisher at Cardiff Spur. He attended school in Pierce. They moved to Orofino in 1978. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to '55. He married Joan Jurgens Aug. 27, 1955 at Lewiston. Bud worked for Potlatch at Headquarters as a truck driver and line machine operator before retiring in 1989. He worked a short time for Finke Logging and Musselman Construction before driving a school bus for Joint School District #171, a job he truly loved. He enjoyed hunting, skiing and fishing. Most recently he enjoyed traveling in his motorhome. He also participated in many log drives. Survivors include his wife Joan Adams of Orofino; two sons, Craig Adams and wife Nancy of Las Vegas, Nev. and Mark Adams and wife Susan of Orofino; a daughter Rhonda and husband Ron Norland, Orofino; a brother, Vernon Morris of Cardiff; a sister, Belva Davis of Lewiston; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A graveside service will be held at Riverside Cemetery at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 15. Pine Hills Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Laura Ogle Holzhey, 95, former resident
Laura Ogle Holzhey, longtime Clearwater County resident, died in Poulsbo, Wash. Jan. 24, 2003. Laura was born near O'Neill, Neb., Jan. 26, 1908 to Wilbur and Ida Ogle. Her family moved to western Washington about 1912. After she graduated from Central Washington Normal School in Ellensburg, her first teaching job was in northeast-ern Montana. She lived in a country teacherage beside the one-room school many miles from town. She married Charles A. Holzhey in 1932. They placer mined for gold and worked at a variety of things to get through those first depression years. In 1936, they purchased a country store south of Spokane. Laura took care of customers, the gas pump, post office and telephone exchange. After World War II, the family moved onto a farm in the community of Fraser, near Weippe, where Laura taught in the one-room Johnstown School and was later a substitute teacher in the Weippe grade school. In the early 1960's, she and her husband purchased a locker plant in Orofino. In the fall and winter the couple, with the help of Lois Bird, and sometimes others, cut, wrapped and froze tons of game meat, mostly elk, and air freighted frozen meat as far away as New York. Laura helped found the Fish Thrift Store in Orofino. After more than 20 years at that charitable work, she received special recognition from the United Methodist Women. She helped at the county fair for many years, and occasionally was a judge for exhibits. In 1997 she went to western Washington with son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Joyce Holzhey. She is survived by Steven and Joyce of Suquamish, Wash.; grandson Charles Holzhey of Seattle; granddaughter Karyn and husband Ted Skipper and grandchildren Andrea, Alexander and Cassandra, all of Suquamish. Memorial services will be held at the United Methodist Church in Orofino, at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 17. Any memorial donations may be given to the Fish Thrift Store at P.O. Box 1455, Orofino, ID 83544.

Ruth Annette Kelley, 63, Orofino
Ruth Annette Kelley, 63, a resident of Orofino, died Sunday, Feb. 9, 2003 at the Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation Center in Orofino. At her request, cremation has taken place and no service will be held. Vassar-Rawls Funeral Home in Lewiston is in charge of arrangements.

Arthur "Uncle Pete" Henson, 46, Orofino
Arthur "Uncle Pete" Henson passed away Jan. 15, 2003 at Orofino, due to complications of Lou Gehrig's disease, which was diagnosed three years ago. Pete was born at Myrtle Point, Ore. June 14, 1956 to Art and Darlene Johnson Henson. He grew up in Lewiston and Orofino and graduated from Orofino High School in 1974. After graduation, Pete received his Farrier certification in Dallas, Tex. and then returned home to work for his father's logging company. After 20 years in the logging industry, he obtained his nursing certification. He worked as a certified nursing assistant for six years before becoming ill. Pete had a love for all animals, especially his horses. He loved to spend time with family and friends at his home, all affectionately referred to as the "Ranch". Pete was involved with Clearwater Rough Riders, 4-H and was a Respite volunteer. He is survived by his parents Art and Judy Henson, Ahsahka and Darlene Anderst, Lewiston; sisters Linda Wakefield and husband Doug and Becky Anderson, all of Lewiston, Susie Marvin and husband Chris, Tammy Clark and husband James Boyd, all of Orofino and Heidi Anderst and husband Reid Tucker of Denver, Colo.; brothers Dan Henson and wife Johna of Orofino, Jeff Henson and wife Angie Klein of Ahsahka, Andy Anderst and wife Deanna of Lewiston and numerous nieces and nephews. A celebration of Pete's life was held Saturday, Jan. 18, 2003 at the VFW building in Orofino. In lieu of monetary memorials, Pete wanted that an act of kindness be done in his honor.

Charles B. Calland, 81, Orofino
Charles B. Calland died Jan. 14, 2003 at Clearwater Health and Rehabilitation in Orofino of the blood disease, hemachromatosis. Charles was born July 22, 1921 to Jasper John Calland and Florence Conrad Calland. He graduated from Orofino High School, but went to the Grangemont School for 10 years. He helped on the ranch during that time. He worked at the Clearwater Tribune on Saturdays and after school. He married Myrle Caruthers in 1941 and had a daughter, Becky Shepherd. They divorced four years later. He then married Melva West, June 28, 1952. Together they raised a son, Richard and daughter Becky. He went to work in the woods for White Pine Lumber Co. in 1944. Charles was drafted into the Army, serving in the Philippines and Japan before being honorably discharged. He then returned to White Pine Lumber Co., logging and bulldozing, making many of the logging roads in the Grangemont area. When White Pine sold out, he worked for Bano Inc. for five years, then for Tripco Logging. Charles enjoyed growing roses and working in his shop. Melva, his wife of 50 years survives at the family home. Other survivors are daughter Becky Shepherd of Parker, Ariz.; two sisters, Margaret Fine and Corrie Shriver of Orofino; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. A memorial service was held Friday, Jan. 17, 2003 at Pine Hills Funeral Chapel. A private burial will be held at a later date at Weseman Cemetery, where he will be laid to rest next to his son and grandson. Honorary pallbearers were Clarence Harvey, Jim Montambo, Dee Steadman, Ross Triplett, Gail Triplett, Perk Lyda and Bill Irby. Pine Hills Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Maxine B. (Bryant) Musiel, 82, Orofino
Maxine B. Musiel, a lifelong Orofino resident, passed away quietly at her home early Saturday morning, January 18, 2003. She was born March 22, 1920 in Orofino, ID to John and Lavina Bryant. Maxine graduated from high school in Orofino, where she lived her entire life except while attending college and owning a hotel in Coeur d'Alene. She married Chuck Musiel at Orofino Feb. 11, 1944. They both taught school in Orofino until the move to Coeur d'Alene. After they returned to Orofino, Maxine was the bookkeeping end of a long partnership with her husband in the grocery and dry cleaning business. She had a degree in education in from the University of Idaho and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was a member of the Orofino branch of P.E.O. and enjoyed playing bridge, cooking, crossword puzzles, and traveling with her husband, Chuck. Surivivors include her three sons, Joe and his wife Joie of Clarkston, WA, Tim of Orofino, Bert of Deary and a sister, Gladys Doll of Snohomish, WA. A memorial service will be held for family and friends at a date to be announced in February. Memorials may be sent to the Clearwater County EMTs, P.O.
