A funeral service for Velia A. Metropulos, 86, of Park Ridge, was held Friday, June 26, 2009, at St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church. Interment was at Maine cemetery. Ms. Metropulos was born in 1922 in Henryetta, Oklahoma. Her late husband John was a founding member of St. John the Baptist Greek Orthodox Church in Des Plaines, where she was an active member. She passed away June 22, 2009. She is survived by children Diane (Dr. Donald) Kurten, John (Martha), Raymond, Linda, Timothy, Ann (Craig) Addis and James, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Margaret Mary Moroni
of Elk Grove Village

A Funeral Mass for Margaret Mary Moroni, 89, was held on Saturday, June 13, 2009 at Queen of the Rosary Catholic Church in Elk Grove Village. Moroni was born in Clinton, Iowa, and died on Tuesday, June 9, 2009. She retired from a specialty coating company in 1994. Prior to that she worked for Centex in Elk Grove Village. Moroni is survived by her children; bonnie A. (Jack) Berg, Renee M. Berg and James Maroni, sister June Bricchi, grandchildren; Dina (Ron) Blazek, Cory Berg, Jordan Moroni and great-grandson Carter Blazek. She was preceded in death by her parents Harry and Alice Werden and brother John Werden. Funeral arrangements were made through Grove Memorial Chapel.

Alfred H. Nelson
Formerly of Arlington Hts.

A funeral service for Alfred H. Nelson, 97, formerly of Arlington Hts., was held Friday, July 10, 2009, in Glueckert Funeral Home, Ltd., Arlington Hts. Interment will be private. A native of Chicago, he died July 3 in Alexian Brothers Medical Center. He was employed by the First National Bank of Chicago for 40 years before retiring in 1974. He was an Army veteran of World War II. He was past commander, organizer, and 64-year member of the American Legion First National Bank Post 985. He was past 2nd district commander of the American Legion, and past finance officer of the Cook County American Legion Council. Surviving are his stepchildren, Bruce (Pamela) O'Neil and Roger (Lynnea) O'Neil; and step-grandchildren Christopher, Meredith, and Megan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace.

Steve Popovich
of Niles

A Funeral Mass was held for Steve Popovich, of Niles, was held at Our Lady of Ransom Church on Friday, July 3, 2009 with visitation on Thursday, July 3 at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home. Entombment was at Maryhill Mausoleum. Popovich was born in Nokomis, Ill., on May 10, 1918 and died at his home in Niles on Tuesday, June 30, 2009. Popovich was a veteran of the United States Navy and a member of the St. Anthony De Padua Council of the Knights of Columbus No. 1949. He spent his working career as a machinist. Popovich is survived by his daughter Susan (Joseph) Miceli, son Donald Popovich, grandchildren: Elizabeth (Alexander) Sanchez and Kristen (Alan) Thibeault, great-daughter Gianna Sanchez, sisters-in-law; Olga Patte, Dorothy Popovich and Louise Popovich and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Helen (nee Scharan) Popovich and wife Estelle Popovich.

Joellyn "Babe" Russo
of Elk Grove Village

A funeral Mass for Joellyn "Babe" Russo, 63, took place on Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Queen of the Rosary Church. Visitation was Wednesday, May 27 at Grove Memorial Chapel in Elk Grove Village. She was born in Chicago. She died at Lexington Health Care Center in Schaumburg. Her siblings Mitch "Connie" Russo and Joan (the late Ken) Sanji, many nieces and nephews, and friends survive her.

Ann Rix Scanlan
Formerly of Arlington Hts.

A funeral Mass for Ann Rix Scanlan took place on Thursday, June 18, 2009 at St. James Church in Arlington Hts. A memorial service will occur on a later date at Central Wesleyan Church in Holland, Mich. Interment was at Acacia Park cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, June 17 at Glueckert Funeral Home, Arlington Hts. Mrs. Scanlan was born on May 27, 1935 in a taxicab en route to the hospital in Chicago. She died on June 14, 2009 at home in Holland, Mich. Her husband Robert Scanlan, and her children Carol (Scott) Woodin, Scott, David (Elizabeth), Linda (Steve) Znachko, Jane (Doug) Guffy, Tom (Shannon), and Julie (Mike) Soyka survive her.

John P. Shanahan
Former Park Ridgean

A funeral mass for John P. (Jack) Shanahan, 85, a former resident of Park Ridge, was celebrated June 24, 2009 in St. Mary of Vernon Church, Indian Creek, Ill. Entombment was in Ascension cemetery, Libertyville. Arrangements were by Ryan-Parke Funeral Home, Park Ridge. A native of Chicago, he died June 21 in Libertyville. He was a current resident of Vernon Hills. Surviving are children Kathi and Tim (Nancy); and grandchildren Alexis, Sidney, Taylor, Kellie, and Timmy Shanahan.

Jean Susan Sloss
of Palatine

A funeral Mass for Jean Susan Sloss (nee Mann), 93 took place on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at St. Colette Church. Interment was at St. Michael the Archangel cemetery in Palatine. Visitation was Tuesday, May 26, at Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows. Mrs. Sloss was born on Mar. 27, 1916 in Chicago. She died on May 22, 2009 at Provena St. Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Her husband Louis O. preceded her in death. Her children William (Linda) Sloss and Marjorie (Bert) Harris survive her.

Edward B. Smith Jr.
WWII Army Veteran from Arlington Hts.

Visitation and a memorial service for Edward B. Smith Jr., 88 will take/took place on Wednesday, May 27, 2009 at Justen Funeral Home & Crematory in McHenry. Mr. Smith was born on Nov. 30, 1920 in Cincinnati. He died on May 22, 2009 at Alden Terrace of McHenry. His wife Dorothy and their children, Deborah, Gary, and Douglas survive him.

Alvin Clark Sutherland
Formerly of Arlington Hts.

A funeral mass for Alvin Clark Sutherland, 80, a former Arlington Hts. resident, was celebrated Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in St. Thomas of Villanova Church, 1201 Anderson, Palatine. Interment will be in St. Michael the Archangel cemetery, Palatine. Arrangements are by Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., Arlington Hts. A native of Chicago, he died July 3 in Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington. He was a computer specialist for United Airlines for 35 years. Surviving are his children, Timothy, Cathy (Tom) Lakowske, Donald (Christine), Gerald (Shelley), and Ann (Giancarlo) Natalino; grandchildren Nicholas (Jamie) Ryan, Jessica, Darren and Danielle Sutherland, and Mario and Luigi Natalino; and great-granddaughter Kya Lorraine Kirksy.

Betty M. Venturini
of Arlington Hts.

A funeral mass for Betty M. Venturini, 83, of Arlington Hts., was celebrated Thursday, July 9, 2009, in Our Lady of the Wayside Church, 440 S. Mitchell, Arlington Hts. Burial will be in All Saints cemetery, Des Plaines. Arrangements are by Glueckert Funeral Home Ltd., Arlington Hts. A native of Chicago, she died July 4 in Glenbrook Hospital, Glenview. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary of Tattler, Post 973. Surviving are her husband, Frank; children Ronald (Debby) and Joann (Michael) O'Donnell; grandchildren Tim, Brian, and Tony; step-grandchildren Rick and Corey Mendoza; and step-great-grandchildren Jaden and Madison.

A funeral service for Irma G. Williams, 87, a former long-time Park Ridge resident and Realtor, was held Wednesday, July 8, 2009, in St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 316 S. Prospect Ave, Park Ridge. Interment will be in Town of Maine cemetery. Arrangements are by Ryan-Parke Funeral Home. A native of Ava, MO, she died July 2 in Roselle. Surviving are children Douglas and Vivian (Randall) Nelson; grandchildren Jason and Bonnie Nelson and Samantha Williams; and great-grandson Danny.

William J. Wood
of Arlington Hts.

A funeral service for William J. Wood, 85, most recently of Arlington Hts. and formerly of Park Ridge, was held June 2, 20095 in Park Ridge Presbyterian Church. Interment was private. Arrangements were by Ryan-Parke Funeral Home, Park Ridge. A native of Holland, Michigan, he died June 22 in Arlington Hts. He was a member of the Park Ridge Rotary and Park Ridge Masonic Lodge and Shriners.

Lorraine Arnold
Of Arlington Hts.

Lorraine Arnold, (nee Ranke), 83, of Arlington Hts., died on July 10, 2009 at Northwest Community Hospital after a brief battle with lymphoma. She was born Jan. 17, 1926 in Chicago. Along with her husband, she was actively involved in the family business until retirement. She was the wife of the late, Robert Arnold; mother of Lorna (Stephen Lake) Arnold and Rob (Jeanie) Arnold; grandmother of Robert Kyle Arnold; Ashlie Arnold, Lauren Joyce Arnold, Danny Arnold and Colleen Arnold. Funeral services were Tuesday, July 14 at Friedrichs Funeral Home in Mt. Prospect. Interment was at Maryhill cemetery.

Frank Belmonte
Of Arlington Hts.

Frank Belmonte was born Aug. 15, 1927 in Cosenza, Italy. He worked for the Hartmarx Corp. as a designer/manager in the Custom Shop of Men's Fashion from 1969 until his retirement in 1992. He died on July 10 at his home in Arlington Hts. Mr. Belmonte is survived by his wife of 51 years, Carmela Pellegrini Belmonte; his children, Albert (Martha) Belmonte, Frank (Diane) Belmonte, Joseph Belmonte and Carol Belmonte; his 7 grandchildren and sister Emma Perri. A funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, July 14 at St. Edna Catholic Church in Arlington Hts. Entombment was in Queen of Heaven cemetery, Hillside. Glueckert Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Louis Byron
Of Des Plaines

Louis B. Byron, 80, of Des Plaines died on July 6, 2009. He was the husband of Virginia; father of Lisa (John) Lancaster, Jeffrey and Steve Byron; grandfather of Alyssa, Natalie, Julia and Heather; brother-in-law of Dolores (Gene) Bauer. Funeral service was held at Swan Lake Chapel at Ridgewood cemetery in Des Plaines. Interment was private. Oehler Funeral Home in Des Plaines handled the arrangements.

Shirley M. Golden
Formerly of Rolling Meadows

Shirley M. Golden (nee Holst), 78, of Schaumburg, formerly of Rolling Meadows, died on July 7, 2009 at Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Hts. She was born Jan. 20, 1931, in Chicago. She worked as an insurance underwriter for many years. Mrs. Golden was the wife of the late William; mother of Mary Ellen Golden; Kevin (Rusty) Golden, Kathie (Lance) Hansen and the late Michael Golden; grandmother of Jessica (Mike) Hubka, Leigh and Matt (Angela) Golden, Marnie (Steve) Nicholas, Marsha (Mike) Roeser, Dana Szymkowiak; Julie and Kiel Hansen and Emily Golden; great-grandmother of six. A memorial service was held Saturday, July 11 at Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows.

Harvey Stephen Huebner
Of Elk Grove Village

A Funeral Mass for Harvey Stephen Huebner, 69, was held Thursday, July 9, 2009, at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Schaumburg. Interment was in St. Michael the Archangel cemetery, Palatine. He was born Nov. 22, 1939, in Chicago. He worked for 42 years for Fort Dearborn Lithograph. He died Monday, July 6 at home. Mr. Huebner was the husband of Mary; father of Kelly (John) Kichka, Kathy (James) Mirani, Peggy (Fred) Gonzini and Patty (Mike) Fontanetta; grandfather of 11. Funeral arrangements were handled by Michaels Funeral Home in Schaumburg.

Clifford R. Johnson
Of Arlington Hts.

Clifford R. Johnson, 85, died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at his home in Arlington Hts. Mr. Johnson was born in Chicago on Aug. 19, 1923 in Chicago's Englewood neighborhood. Johnson volunteered for service in the Army during WWII and served as a sergeant. He landed on Normandy June 9, 1944 and commanded a tank. He participated in and was injured in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and received a Purple Heart. He returned home to work for Jewel Companies, Inc. for 37 years. Mr. Johnson was married to Mitzi (Delich), for 60 years. He was a member of the Village of Arlington Hts. Plan Commission and was a founding member of Southminster Presbyterian Church. Mr. Johnson is survived by his children, Susan, Glenn, Jeanne, Bob; grandfather to 10. Funeral services were on Tuesday, July 14 at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Arlington Hts. Friedrichs Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Joseph A. Krysh
Of Palatine

Funeral services for Joseph A. Krysh were held Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home in Palatine. Interment followed at St. Michael the Archangel cemetery. Mr. Krysh was born Mar. 30, 1932, in Chicago. He was a U.S. Navy Torpedoman during the Korean War. Mr. Krysh is survived by his wife, Joan Krysh; daughter, Susan (Robert) Edelmann; sons Jeffrey and Rob Krysh and a brother, Daniel (Jan) Krysh.
