Howard S. Hawkins, 91, of Palatine, died on Sept. 22, 2009. He was born Jan. 23, 1918, in Chicago. Mr. Hawkins was a sergeant major in the US Army during World War II and a member of the 84th Infantry Division of the Railsplitter Society. Funeral services were held Friday, Sept. 25 at St. Thomas of Villanova Church in Palatine. He was the husband of Patricia; father of Howard Hawkins, Steve (Jackie) Hawkins, Pam (Tim) Hargrove, Cindy (Mark) Turf and Debbie (Brad) Pukas; and grandfather of 12.

John R. Hogan
Formerly Of Arlington Hts.

John R. "Jack" Hogan, 81, of Lake Geneva, Wisc., formerly of Arlington Hts., died Sept. 18, 2009 in his home. Mr. Hogan was the husband of Mary E.; father of Lawrence M. (Elizabeth) Hogan, Mary Jo (Tony) Hubick, Lynn M. (Lance) Griesmaier, Mark J. (Michelle) Hogan, Michael R. (Maria) Hogan, and the late Thomas Christopher Hogan; grandfather of 12; dear brother and loving uncle. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Sept. 22 from Lauterburg & Oehler Funeral Home to St. James Church, Arlington Hts.

Rosemary Lick
Of Wheeling

Rosemary Lick (nee Adams), 79, died on Sept. 16, 2009. Ms. Lick was the mother of Randy (Mary) Adams, Diane (Ron) Kewin and Steve Lick; grandmother of Jennifer, Nick and Landon; sister of Kay Halloch and Terry Koca; aunt of many. A Life Celebration service was held on Sept. 19 at Kolssak Funeral Home in Wheeling.

Herman J. Madler III
Of Mt. Prospect

A memorial Mass for Herman Joseph Madler III, 79, of Mt. Prospect, was celebrated Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2009 at St. Emily Church in Mt. Prospect. He was born Dec. 13, 1929, in Chicago, and died Sept. 26. Mr. Madler was the husband of Julie M. Madler; father of Peter (Jody) Madler, Kate (TJ) Joyce and Sue (Ryan) Ford; grandfather of Whitney, Laughton, Atlin and Keele; brother of Pauline (Jerry) Paneral, Francis (Betty) Madler, James (Anita) Madler and Jerome (Francine) Madler.

Marilyn J. Maierhofer
Of Rolling Meadows

Marilyn J. Maierhofer (nee Hildebrandt) 77, of Rolling Meadows died Sept. 24, 2009 at Manor Care of Rolling Meadows. She was born Dec. 29, 1931 in Arlington Hts. Mrs. Maierhofer was the wife of the late Louis J. Maierhofer Jr.; mother of Bonnie (Barclay) Bell and Alan Maierhofer; sister of Harold (Charlotte) Hildenbrandt and the late Lorraine Bass, Verdell (Ronald) Botterman, Harvey, Ralph and Fred (Ann Stade) Hildebrandt. Funeral services were held Monday, Sept. 28 at Meadows Funeral Home in Rolling Meadows. Interment at Memory Gardens cemetery, Arlington Hts.

Eileen Ruth Marando
Of Des Plaines

Funeral services for Eileen Ruth Marando were held Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at First United Methodist Church, Des Plaines. Interment was at Memory Gardens cemetery, Arlington Hts. Mrs. Marando died on Sept. 27. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. She was the wife of the late Emilio; mother of Michael (Nancy) Marando, James (Julia) Marando, Mark (Tracy) Marando and Patricia Novotny; grandmother of eight, great-grandmother of one and loving sister.

Helen B. Mellenthin
Of Mt. Prospect

Funeral services for Helen B. Mellenthin (nee Buchmiller), 79, formerly of Chicago and Niles, began at Matz Funeral Home in Mt. Prospect on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2009 and proceeded to St. John Brebeuf Church in Niles for Mass. Interment was at Maryhill cemetery. She was born Sept. 2, 1930, and died Sept. 29, in Elk Grove Village. Mrs. Mellenthin was the wife of Ted; mother of Eileen (John) Riess, Kathy (Ed) Reich, Jim (Susan), John (Nancy) and Brian (Kimberly); grandmother of 11 and fond aunt.

Eileen K. McKinley
Of Elk Grove Village

Eileen K. McKinley (nee Strey), 66, died on Sept. 23, 2009. She was born in Chicago and was an Elk Grove resident for 46 years. A memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Queen of the Rosary Church, Elk Grove Village. Mrs. McKinley was the wife of Roy E.; mother of Roy M. McKinley and Cheryl L. (Michael) Marmitt; grandmother of Michael, Derek and Christopher; sister of William and Charles (Jean) Strey, daughter of Theresa Soarez and loving aunt.

Josephine F. Newcomb
Of Mt. Prospect

A funeral Mass for Josephine F. Newcomb (nee Krolicki), 95, was held Monday, Oct. 5, 2009 at St. Raymond de Penafort Church in Mt. Prospect. Interment was in St. Adalbert cemetery. She was born Jan. 4, 1914, in Chicago, and died Sept. 30. Mrs. Newcomb was the wife of the late Louis A. Newcomb; mother of Gordon (Hester) Madoline (Allen) Webb and Vernon (Jean) Newcomb; grandmother of Steven (Bonnie), Richard (Jodee), Sheryl, Valerie and the late Keith; and great grandmother of three. Friedrichs Funeral Home, Mt. Prospect, handled the arrangements.

Joseph J. Paweleck
Of Rolling Meadows

Services for Joseph J. Paweleck Sr., 85, were held Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Meadows Funeral Home, Rolling Meadows and St. Colette Church. Interment was in St. Michael the Archangel cemetery. He was born May 28, 1924, in Chicago, and died Sept. 26, at Northwest Community Hospital, Arlington Hts. He served in the military during WWII and Korea. Mr. Paweleck was the husband of Joyce; father of Linda Weinfurter, Joseph Jr. (Vicky) Paweleck, Cathy (Joe) Paglia and the late Robert (Judy) Paweleck and Cheryl Montoya; grandfather of 13 and the late Toby and great-grandfather of 13.

Joseph Anthony Pinnello, Sr.
Of Arlington Hts.

A funeral Mass for Joseph Anthony Pinnello, Sr., was held Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009 at Our Lady of the Wayside Church, Arlington Hts. Ahlgrim Family Funeral Home, Palatine, handled the arrangements. He was born Aug. 23, 1939, in Chicago, and died Sept. 26. He taught at the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago. Mr. Pinnello is survived by his children, William Kenneth (Kelli), Joseph Anthony Jr., John Thomas (Celeste), Debra Marie (Steven) Schuldt, Cynthia Lynn (Alan) Piecuch and Carolyn Terese (Erik) Leszka and his 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Colette.

Services for Anna Plei (nee Fendt) began with prayers on Friday, Oct. 2, 2009 at Matz Funeral Home, Mt. Prospect, and proceeded to St. Emily Church, Mt. Prospect, for Mass. Entombment was in All Saints Mausoleum. She was born Oct. 15, 1926, in Yugoslavia and died Sept. 29, at her home in Des Plaines. She was a retired factory worker. Mrs. Plei was the wife of Michael; mother of Michael Plei and Anna (David) Klimczak; grandmother of Jacklyn and Nicholas; and sister of Margaret Simon.

Carol Joyce Riggs
Of Buffalo Grove

Carol Joyce Riggs (nee Hawkins), 69, of Buffalo Grove, died on Sept. 27, 2009. She was the wife of John Riggs; mother of Tracy (Steve) Covek; grandmother of Jonathan and Nicholas and a loving aunt. A Life Celebration service was held on Thursday, Oct. 1 at Kolssak Funeral Home in Wheeling. Cremation will be private.

A funeral service for Mary L. Rutherford (nee Weatherly), of Antioch, formerly of Mt. Prospect, was held Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Friedrichs Funeral Home in Mt. Prospect. She was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Lebanon, Tenn., and died Friday, Sept. 25 in Centegra Medical Center in McHenry. Mrs. Rutherford was the wife of the late Cecil S. Rutherford; mother of Patricia (James) Schwartz, Michael J. (Lorresa) Kelley, Larry Kelley, Debra (John) LaBrie and the late Dorothy Mittlestedt; grandmother of 12, great-grandmother of 16; and sister of Nellie Wheeler.

Kenneth D. Sauerberg

Funeral services for Kenneth D. Sauerberg, 80, of Des Plaines, were held Sept. 30, 2009 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Des Plaines. Interment was private. He was born Sept. 28, 1928, in Maywood and died Sept. 27 at Lutheran General Hospital. Mr. Sauerberg was the husband of Marilyn; father of Ken (Kate) Sauerberg, Cynthia (John) Kline, Christie (Bill) Brennan and Michael (Carol) Patton; grandfather of nine and fond brother of five siblings.

Ruth Schneider, (nee Wilberding) 91, of Elk Grove Village, died on Sept. 15, 2009. Funeral Mass was held on Sept. 18 at Queen of the Rosary Church. She was the wife of the late Otto J. Boebel; mother of Pat Watson, Robert (Linda) Boebel, Pete (Sharon) Emin; grandmother of Michael and Jeffery Watson, Eric and Scott Emin and several great-grandchildren.

Therese M. Smitham (nee Detloff), 91, died Sept. 22, 2009. She was born in Chicago and resided in Glenview and Niles. Ms. Smitham was the mother of Jim (Karen) Smitham; Kathie (Ray) Godfrey and Steve (Mary) Smitham; grandmother of Greg (Rose) Godfrey; Laura (Steve) Stelter, Steve (Amy) Godfrey, Wendy (Rich Bieniek) Geraghty, Brad Smitham, Stacy (Bob) Smith, Geoff (Lors) and Courtney Smitham; great grandmother of 14. Memorial service was held Saturday, Oct. 3 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rolling Meadows.

Barbara J. Walsh, 78, of Niles, died on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at a family member's home. She was born Nov. 16, 1930, in Chicago. Funeral services were held at Skaja Terrace Funeral Home on Friday, Oct. 2 and St. Juliana Church. Interment at All Saints cemetery. Ms. Walsh is survived by her children, John Q. Walsh, Patricia (Stephen) Knapp, Annette (Mark) Sereika, Mary Barbara, Karen (Kevin) Miller, Steven J. (Anne) Walsh, Nancy (Stephen) McNamara and her siblings.

Lorraine A. Wendt
Of Park Ridge

Lorraine A. Wendt, 74, of Park Ridge, passed away Sept. 21, 2009. Beloved wife of John for 52 years; loving mother of Susan Dennis and Edward Wendt; cherished grandmother of Rachel, Samantha and Allison and dear aunt of Paul, Bobbie and the late Rick Eichhammer. She was a graduate of Valparaiso University. Memorial Service, Wed. Oct. 14 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Algonquin Rd. & Wolf Rd., Des Plaines. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Trinity Church appreciated. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Illinois – 847-577-6505.
