Ralph Kruzic

Ralph J. Kruzic, 71, of Lombard, died Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006 at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst.

Funeral services will be held today, Oct. 25, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment is at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.

Mr. Kruzic was the husband of Margaret; father of Lauren Levin and Allison of Lombard; brother of Jeanne Campbell, Sharon Kruzic and Linda De Las Cuesas; and uncle and great-uncle of many.

Mr. Kruzic was a resident of Lombard for 33 years. He was a graduate of Northern Illinois University and received his master's degree from Loyola University. He had retired after 20 years as a counselor at Washburn Trade School

In lieu of flowers, memorials to Misericordia/Heart of Mercy Center, 6300 N. Ridge Ave., Chicago, IL 60660-1017; or the American Heart Association, Greater Midwest Affiliate, 2816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago IL 60674, would be appreciated.

Harriette Lucke

Harriette L. Lucke, nee Dixon, 91, of Schaumburg, formerly of Lombard, died Sunday, Oct. 22, 2006 at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village.

Funeral services will be held today, Oct. 25, at Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard. Interment is at Woodlawn Cemetery in Forest Park.

Mrs. Lucke was the mother of Terry A. (Marge) and Gail L. Mullins, grandmother of eight, great-grandmother of two, sister of Elinor (Ray) Shubert, and aunt of many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; and son-in-law, Robert Mullins.

Mrs. Lucke was a resident of Lombard from 1978-96. She was a 50-year member of WEGS Austin Congregational Church in Chicago and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Lombard.

Memorials to the Alzheimer's Association, 4709 Golf Road, Skokie, IL 60076, would be appreciated.

Earl Swanson

Earl E. Swanson Jr., 78, of Lombard, died Monday, Oct. 16, 2006 in Lombard.

Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 21, at Community Congregational Church in Villa Park. Committal was at Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst.

Mr. Swanson was the husband of Marjorie; father of Grace, Larry (Julie), Earl E. III (Pam), Ron and Jennifer Miller; grandfather of 16; great-grandfather of one; brother of Barbara (George) Fanslow and Elizabeth (John) McGinnity; and brother-in-law of John Corrigan. He was preceded in death by his sister, Grace Corrigan.

Mr. Swanson was born in Oak Park to Earl E. Sr. and Grace Swanson. He spent his childhood in Villa Park and dropped out of high school at age 17 to join the Navy in 1945. After returning from the service, he completed high school and graduated from Elmhurst College.

Mr. Swanson was a Republican committeeman in DuPage County for 30 years. He was elected to the York Township Highway Commissioner post and served from 1975-93. During this time he developed an improved method for filling cracks in the road, for which he received a patent. He also designed and supervised the building of a new highway department facility, expanding building and grounds tenfold without any additional taxpayer money.

Mr. Swanson also obtained his commercial real estate broker's license and engineered the sale of several parcels of land at 31st Street and Highland Avenue, including the closing of 32 single-family homes in one day for Coldwell Banker.

Mr. Swanson played for the DuPage Symphony Orchestra after the Navy and over the years played several instruments, including the violin, piano, organ, guitar and ukulele. Some of the scores he wrote for piano were performed at the Von Maur store in Yorktown mall in Lombard.

Mr. Swanson began to study sculpture after he retired from the highway department, and he studied with Mustafa Naguib, the former head of the University of Cairo and attended advanced medical anatomy classes to better understand the human body. He was the founder of the non-profit Danada Sculpture Gardens Association.

Many of his sculptures are in public and private collections around the country; he sculpted the bust of his uncle, Russell Swanson, former president of the DuPage County Board which is on display at the Wheaton County Building, and has a piece on the Riverwalk in Naperville and four life-size works in Lombard, all of which were dedicated this year.

Mr. Swanson enjoyed golf all his life, and age 13 won the Elmhurst Country Club Caddy Tournament, and the Medinah Classic in 1974. He also enjoyed his family and the friends he developed over his lifetime.

Memorials to the C.O.D. Foundation, in memory of Earl E. Swanson Jr. for Art Scholarships, 425 Fawell Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137, would be appreciated.

Arrangements were made by Brust Funeral Home, 135 S. Main St., Lombard.

Mary Swieter

Mary L. Swieter, nee Silvestri, 80, of Villa Park, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006 at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Oct. 19, at Steuerle Funeral Home, 350 S. Ardmore Ave., Villa Park. Interment was at All Saints Cemetery.

Mrs. Swieter was the mother of Kathleen (Jeff) Schoeder, Janet (Dennis) Cowhey, Diane (Vince) Prew, Nancy, Jeffrey, Patrick and Michael (Deborah); grandmother of 10; great-grandmother of one; and aunt of many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd; son, William; grandson, Alan; brothers, Daniel and Alfred Silvestri; and sister, Dora Bonarirgo.

Harry Atherton

Harry W. Atherton, 90, of Villa Park, formerly of Forest Park, died Saturday, Nov. 18, 2006 at Elmhurst Extended Care in Elmhurst.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 21, at Brust Villa Park Funeral Home, 305 S. Princeton. Interment was at Memory Gardens in Arlington Heights.

Mr. Atherton was the father of Jay W. (Sue), Harry "Ed" (Paula), Lora (Arthur) Prueser of Villa Park and Edie (Bob) Scheiwe; grandfather of nine; and great-grandfather of five. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lora.

Mr. Atherton was a resident of Villa Park for 17 years and of Forest Park for 40 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and had retired from W.F. Hall Printing Co. in Chicago, after working as a pressman for 43 years.

Lola Anderson

Lola M. Anderson, nee Popovich, 56, of Sugar Grove, formerly of Lombard, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006 at the Midwestern Regional Medical Center in Zion.

Funeral services were held Friday, Nov. 17, at Pleasant Hill Community Church in Wheaton. Interment was at Wheaton Cemetery.

Mrs. Anderson was the wife of Donald; mother of Dawn (Peter) Ziegler, Keith (Angie), Janice (Ryan) Foerch, Laura (Chris) Minkley and Eric; grandmother of four; and sister of Elizabeth Popovich, Phyllis (Len) Thielen and Sandra Popovich.

Mrs. Anderson was a five-year resident of Sugar Grove and of Lombard for 29 years. She grew up in Cicero and attended Morton Grove High School, and devoted her adult life to her family and home.

Arrangements were made by Williams-Kampp Funeral Home, 430 E. Roosevelt Road, Wheaton.

Mark Briggs

Mark A. Briggs, 42, of Island Lake, formerly of Villa Park, died Sunday, Nov. 12, 2006 at Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Nov. 15, at Brust Villa Park Funeral Home, 305 S. Princeton. Interment was at Chapel Hill Gardens West Cemetery in Oakbrook Terrace.

Mr. Briggs was the father of David and Christopher of Villa Park, son of Sandra Ezell, brother of Sherri (John) Tate and Scott, and uncle of five. He was preceded in death by his wife, Debra L.; and father, Robert C. Jr.

Mr. Briggs had formerly resided in Villa Park for 42 years. He enjoyed bowling and shooting pool.
