Virginia A. Smallman

Virginia Alice (Cooke) Smallman, 96, a resident of Morton Grove and a former resident of Naperville and Chicago, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Bethany Terrace Centre in Morton Grove. She was born Nov. 4, 1906, in Chicago.

She was raised in the historic Pullman area. She was a graduate of the Chicago Teacher's College and a 1932 graduate of Boston University with a bachelor's degree in religious education. She taught school for many years in the Chicago public school system. She served as the director of Children's Work for the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church. She was the first certified director of both Christian education and music for the Northern Illinois Conference. She had been a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist in Naperville and served as the librarian in the Reading Room in Naperville from 1976 to 1986. She was devoted to music and had sung professionally for many years. She had a love for ballroom dancing, competing in and winning many competitions.

She is survived by three children, Paula Katherine (husband Harley) McShane of Chicago and Rhoda June Schwartz and George Norman Smallman, both of Oregon; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and a son-in-law, Robert Bufford of Brookville, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George; a daughter, Alice Diane Bufford; and her parents, Thomas and Diane "Della" (Brasser) Cooke.

Visitation will take place from 2 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 12, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville.

Services will begin at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Nicholas Mitrovich officiating.

Memorials may be directed to Pullman Methodist Church or the church or charity of the donor's choice.

Sylvia J. Kramer

Sylvia J. Kramer, 77, of Joliet died Saturday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Provena St. Joseph Medical Center. She was born Dec. 22, 1925, in Rockford.

She was a retired former teacher who enjoyed golf and bridge.

She is survived by three children, William R. (wife Judy) Kramer of Greenville, S.C., Mary (husband Rick) Patap of Naperville and Patricia Honiotes of Joliet; five grandchildren, Ryan and Zachary Patap of Naperville and Jenny, Krissy and Peter Honiotes of Joliet; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Kramer, on July 7, 2002; her parents; two brothers; and a sister.

A funeral service will begin at 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home, 3200 Black Road, Joliet. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m.

Friends and relatives will meet at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at the funeral home chapel for committal prayers and interment at Abraham Lincoln National cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Delores A. Freiberg

Delores A. Freiberg, 73, of Springfield and a former resident of Naperville, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Springfield. She was born July 31, 1929, in Aurora.

She lived in Naperville until 1987, when she and her husband moved to Hot Springs, Ark. She served as a deputy sheriff in Hot Springs and Garland County for 10 years before moving to Springfield. She was a longtime member of the Royal Neighbors of America and a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Naperville.

She is survived by her husband, Paul K. Freiberg of Springfield; two daughters, Linda Minarik of Hoffman Estates and Pamela (husband Thomas) Thornburg of Springfield; a granddaughter, Jennifer Minarik; three sisters, Barbara (husband Gene) Janoski of Yorkville, Nancy Murray of Hinckley and Bonnie (husband Louis) Giosa of Naperville; and a sister-in-law, Clarie Jones of Elm Grove, Wis.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Doris (Weiss) Jones; a brother, Harry "Bud" Jones; and a brother-in-law, John Murray.

Visitation and a service took place Thursday, Jan. 23, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville.

Interment was private.

Memorials may be directed to St. John's Hospice, 800 E. Carpenter St., Springfield, IL 62769.

James R. Kinney

James Raymond Kinney, 74, of Bella Vista, Ark., died Tuesday, Jan. 21, 2003, at his home. He was born Oct. 4, 1928, in Morrisonville to James Raymond and Anna Frances (McLean) Kinney.

He was a commodity manager and assistant vice president with Continental Grain Co. He and his wife moved to Bella Vista in 1995 from Naperville. He was an avid golfer and bowler and especially enjoyed his Diggers, Trappers and Figs golf groups. He was a member of St. Bernard Catholic Church, St. Bernard Men's Club and Knights of Columbus in Bella Vista.

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Ann Kinney, of Bella Vista; five children, Cynthia Ann (husband Jim) Van Zoeren of Kalamazoo, Mich., John Edward (wife Inna) Kinney of Bexley, Ohio, Jane Marie (husband Robert) Cozzarelli of Columbus, Ohio, Mary Katherine Kinney of Chicago and James Raymond (wife Paula) Kinney III of Naperville; 10 grandchildren, Nicholas, Monica, Danielle, Tito, Mara, Sara, A.J., J.R., Jenna and Emily Ann; three sisters, Mary Jane Rhoads and Irene Brochamp of Morrisonville and Dorothy Krager of Raymond; a brother, Dr. Edward Kinney of St. Augustine, Fla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Louis Kinney.

Visitation will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 24, with Rosary at 7 p.m. at the Bella Vista Funeral Home and Crematory, 2258 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista.

A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 25, at St. Bernard Catholic Church, 1 St. Bernard Lane, Bella Vista.

A memorial Mass is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at St. Maurice Catholic Church in Morrisonville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Bella Vista Library, 11 Dickens Place, Bella Vista, AR 72714; St. Mary's Hospice, 1001 W. Walnut, Suite 3, Rogers, AR 72756; St. Maurice Catholic School in Morrisonville; or to a charity of the donor's choice.

Fred C. Kral

Fred C. Kral, 99, of Warrenville died Monday, Jan. 27, 2003, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. He was born May 2, 1903, in Budapest, Hungary.

He built his first home in Warrenville in 1936 and lived there until 1946, returning in 1950 when he built another home and remained there the rest of his life. He attended college for two years before obtaining a position with the U.S. Postal Service until his retirement in 1965. He then worked at various jobs for a number of years. He was an avid gardener and was known as the "Tomato Man of Warrenville" for his wide distribution of his crop to friends and neighbors. He was devoted to the well-being and happiness of his children and extended family and also enjoyed playing golf well past his 90th birthday.

He is survived by two sons, Fred G. (wife Dolores) of Lake Villa and Charles H. (wife Joyce) of Glen Ellyn; 12 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; a son-in-law, Roy Easterly of Adams, Wis.; a brother, Henry Kral of Schaumburg; a sister, Elizabeth Hajicek of Glendale Heights; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bessie (Lastofka); a daughter, Dolores Easterly; a brother, Frank; two sisters, Emma Kral and Ida Duclus; and a niece, Eileen Kral.

A memorial service will take place at 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville. A memorial visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until time of service.

Interment will be private.

David E. Fessler

David E. Fessler, 36, of Hinckley died Monday, Feb. 3, 2003, at Provena Mercy Center in Aurora. He was born July 29, 1966, in Naperville.

An eighth-generation Napervillian, he was a 1985 graduate of Naperville North High School and was employed by Redi-Mix as a dispatcher.

He is survived by his wife, Victoria "Tori" (Schiffer) Fessler of Hinckley; his parents, George and Judith (Drendel) Fessler of Naperville; two brothers, Joseph (wife Julie) Fessler of Naperville and Phillip (wife Missy) Fessler of Paxton; a sister, Kathy (husband Terry) McHugh of Naperville; an uncle, Louis (wife Carol) Drendel of Naperville; two aunts, Katherine (husband Robert) Coggins of Leesburg, Fla., and Sheila (husband Brian) Rafferty of Glen Ellyn; his mother-in-law, Donna Schmidt of Wheaton; his father-in-law, Victor (wife Beverly) Schiffer of Wheeling; three sisters-in-law, Barbara (husband Paul) Trottier of Wilmette, Carol (husband Scott) Wilen of Buffalo Grove and Jackie (husband Tim) Meisner of Somonauk; six nephews, Michael Wilen, Casey Wilen, Ryan Trottier, Matt Trottier, Zachary Fessler and Cody Fessler; and four nieces, Miranda Fessler, Megan Fessler, Mary Kate McHugh and Paige Fessler.

He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Albert F. and Lola E. Drendel; his paternal grandparents, Joseph, Yvonne and Virginia Fessler; great-grandparents, Bert and Louie Wilson; great-great-grandparents, Edward and Clara Laird; great-great-great-grandparents, William and Maria Laird Jr.; great-great-great-great-grandparents, William and Philandra Laird and great-great-great-great-great-grandparents, John and Polly Stevens.

A funeral service will begin at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Beidelman-Kunsch Funeral Home, 516 S. Washington St., Naperville, and proceed to a 9:30 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at SS Peter and Paul Ministry Center Chapel, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

Interment will take place at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in Naperville.

Visitation took place Thursday, Feb. 6, at the funeral home.

Vincent F. Korbal

Vincent F. Korbal, 88, a resident of Sandwich and a former resident of Downers Grove, died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Hillside Healthcare in Yorkville. He was born June 13, 1914, in Chicago.

He married Maria Magelana "Mag" Carusso on Nov. 13, 1937. He was employed as a tool and die maker by Wittek Manufacturing Co. in La Grange until his retirement. He enjoyed the outdoors, particularly hunting and fishing. He was also a talented taxidermist.

He is survived by three children, Roseanne Rupp of River Grove, Vincent J. (wife Michaeline) Korbal of Naperville and James (wife Kathleen) Korbal of Hinckley; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a brother, Sylvester (wife Ella) Korbel of Oregon.

He was preceded in death in 1988 by his wife of 51 years; his parents; a sister, Angie; and two brothers, Michael and Dominic.

A funeral service will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, Feb. 7, at Larson-Nelson Funeral Home, 410 E. Countryside Parkway, Yorkville.

Entombment will follow at Resurrection cemetery in Justice.

Visitation took place Thursday, Feb. 6, at the funeral home.

Marlene J. Stillson

Marlene J. (Schultz) Stillson, 69, of Naperville died Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. She was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Aurora.

She graduated from Naperville High School in 1951. After graduation she worked a short time for the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad and as a telephone operator. She married Donald Stillson in 1954. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday school for a number of years. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, poetry and spending time with her family.

She is survived by three children, Ramona Stillson of Naperville, Donald (wife Lisa) Stillson of Queen Creek, Ariz., and Rhonda (husband Dan) Gerten of Naperville; a grandson, Justin (wife Anne) Stillson of Naperville; two great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Kiersten Stillson; a sister, Elaine (husband Glen) Glover of Naperville; a brother, Frank (wife Adrian) Schultz of Ottawa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Hilma Schultz.

A funeral service will take place at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 9, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. The Rev. Terry McReynolds will officiate. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m.

Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a charity of the donor's choice.

Dorothy A. Clapper

Dorothy A. (Hett) Clapper, 83, of Aurora died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at Tabor Hills Healthcare Facility in Naperville. She was born April 9, 1919, in Chicago.

She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

She is survived by seven children, Glenn (wife Ginnie) Clapper of Spokane, Wash., Patricia Murphy of Chicago, Gary Clapper of San Francisco, Laurie (husband Greg) Long of Aurora, Terry (wife Kathy) Clapper of Roscoe, Maureen Clapper of Washington, D.C., and Timothy (wife Margaret) Clapper of Bartlett; 10 grandchildren, Jason (fiancee Tina Perez) Schoonveld, Melissa, Shannon and Brendan Murphy, and Tommy, Colin, Matthew, Ryan, Meghan and Erik Clapper; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley and Arianna Foster and Alexander Perez.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl; and a daughter, Kathleen McKelgue.

Visitation took place Tuesday, Jan. 28, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home in Naperville.

A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road, Naperville.

Interment will take place at St. Mary cemetery in Evergreen Park.

Genevieve Stasinski

Genevieve "Jean" (Szymanski) Stasinski, 84, a resident of Naperville for two and a half years and a former resident of Chicago, Calumet City and Downers Grove, died Sunday, Jan. 19, 2003, at Meadowbrook Manor of Naperville. She was born April 18, 1918, in Chicago.

She grew up on Chicago's South Side, attending St. Michael Grade School and marrying Raymond Stasinski on April 29, 1939, at St. Mary Magdelene Church. A homemaker, she resided in Calumet City for 15 years and was a member of St. Andrew Church. She moved to Downers Grove in 1992. She was a parishioner at St. Margaret Mary Church in Naperville. Her main love was for her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Ann (husband Edward) Talbot of Naperville; four grandchildren, Benjamin Talbot of Chicago, Daniel Talbot of Aurora, Joseph Talbot of Naperville and Sarah (husband Matt) Peacey of Plainfield; two great-grandchildren, Genevieve Talbot and Joseph Talbot Jr.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, in 1997; her parents, Sylvester and Stella Szymanski; a sister, Anna Fleszewski; and three brothers, Sylvester, Alex and John Szymanski.

A service will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 22, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville, and proceed to an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Margaret Mary Church, 1450 Green Trails Drive, Naperville. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will take place at SS Peter and Paul cemetery in Naperville.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Meadowbrook Manor of Naperville, Summer Flower Garden, 720 Raymond Drive, Naperville, IL 60563.

John M. Deno

John M. "Jack" Deno, 56, of Naperville died Sunday, Jan. 26, 2003, at Edward Hospital in Naperville. He was born Aug. 28, 1946, in Oswego, N.Y.

In 1968 he graduated from St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. He was employed with Traveler's Insurance Co. for 20 years as director of personal lines. He worked for Hartford Insurance Co. in Indianapolis. He coached boys and girls soccer and girls softball and refereed girls basketball. He also had done volunteer work for a hospice. He was an avid golfer and followed the Syracuse Orangemen.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda (Parker) Deno; five children, Matthew (wife Marcy) Deno of Syracuse, N.Y., and Corey Knowles, Christina Deno, Meghan Deno and Ryan Deno, all of Naperville; a sister, Anne Coleman of Libertyville; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Elizabeth Deno; and a brother-in-law, Terry Coleman.

Visitation will take place from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville.

A Mass of Christian burial will begin at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 30, at SS Peter and Paul Ministry Center Chapel, 36 N. Ellsworth St., Naperville.

Interment will be private.
