HELANE ASHTON, PETTY OFFICER, LEGAL AIDE
By Bradley Keoun, Tribune Staff Writer. Edition: Chicago Tribune
Helane V. Ashton, 37, a former U.S. Navy petty officer and later a legal assistant, died Thursday, May 18, of colorectal cancer in her Chicago home. Ms. Ashton enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1984 after she became dissatisfied with her first year of college at Iowa State University in Ames. She stayed in the Navy until 1992. "She didn't know if college was the place for her," said her sister Dardina Carney. "She thought the Navy would provide some comfort for her, and she loved it. I never knew anybody who loved the military as much as she did." Ms. Ashton's service took her to California, Maine, Alaska, Iceland, Spain and the Philippines. "She liked the camaraderie of teamwork and working hard," Carney said. "She liked the regimentation of it. She liked things in order." After she left the Navy, she sometimes thought of re-enlisting. "She often regretted leaving the Navy because she loved it so much," Carney said. Born and raised in Chicago, Ms. Ashton attended Mother McAuley Liberal Arts High School. While stationed in the Philippines, she met her former husband, James Camp, who was stationed there as a U.S. Marine. They married in 1990 and divorced in 1998. Camp, who became a Chicago police officer, was killed in the line of duty in March 1999. After the Navy, Ms. Ashton became a legal assistant. She worked for several Chicago firms, most recently for Schiff Hardin & Waite. She learned she had colorectal cancer in late September. In her last days, she advised all her friends and relatives to get tested for colorectal cancer. Other survivors include her mother, Dardina; a sister, Nazaris DeVine; and a brother, Trelwa. Visitation will be at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Holy Name Catholic Cathedral, 735 N. State St., Chicago. Mass will follow at 7 p.m. Record Number: 20000522OB0005220077
