Helen Mildred Underwood
GOREVILLE -- Helen Mildred Underwood, 92, passed away at 10:20 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at Fountains Nursing Home in Marion. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Goreville United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Alan Milligan officiating. Interment will be held in Busby Cemetery in Goreville. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of the service at 2 p.m. at the church. Meredith Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Helen was born March 15, 1912, in Goreville, to John Sidney and Roberta (Lowry) Benson. She married Kenneth Underwood on Dec. 11, 1932, in Metropolis. He preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1988. She is also preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one sister. Survivors include one daughter, Betty Wooldrige of Longview, Texas; one son-in-law, Paul Hutchison of Tyler, Texas; two grandchildren, Tim Hutchison of Lavon, Texas, and Terry Hutchison of Longview; and four great-grandchildren. Helen was a member of Goreville United Methodist Church and the Goreville Senior Citizens. She has lived in Goreville most of her life.

Jesse 'Eldon' Smith
ELKVILLE -- Jesse E. 'Eldon' Smith, 68, passed away at 11:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale. Eldon was a service technician at National Cash Register Company and had owned Smith Cash Register for 10 years. He was a member of South County Line Christian Church in Carbondale. He was a U. S. Navy veteran. He was born March 29, 1936, at Makanda, the son of Arvel and Otha (Patrick) Smith. He married Carol Marie Martie on Feb. 15, 1958, in Hallidayboro, and she preceded him in death on Oct. 17, 1983. He is survived by two daughters, Denise Crews and husband Robert of Carterville and Patty Manis and husband Randy of Elkville; four sisters, Ardell Savitz of Carbondale, Eleanor Robinson of Carbondale, Shena Weshinskey of Carbondale, and Lela Mae Lowry of Crown Point, Ind. ; three brothers, Lee Smith of Carbondale, Frank Smith of De Soto, and Rudy Smith of Carbondale; a father-in-law, Clyde Martie of Elkville; three grandchildren, Jessica Hart, Bobbi Crews and Jordan Crews; and one step-granddaughter, Sara Manis. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; and one daughter, Mary Lynn Smith. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 17, 2004, at the Hallidayboro United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Tom Monroe officiating. Interment will be in Hallidayboro Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Searby Funeral Home in Du Quoin and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service Thursday at the church. Friends may make memorials to the South County Line Christian Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Modena Pulliam
CHRISTOPHER -- Modena Pulliam, 79, died at 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 19, 2004, in Gilbert Funeral Home. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery in Buckner. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Mrs. Pulliam was a medical technician. She was born Dec. 23, 1924, in Christopher, the daughter of Albert Hess and Verda Britton. She married Robert Pulliam. He preceded her in death. Survivors include children, Cindy Collier of Christopher and Tom Tisdale of Rockford; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. One son, Donald Pulliam and three brothers, Roy Hess, Carl 'Bake' Hess and Albert Hess Jr., preceded her in death.

Hilda A. Stein
PINCKNEYVILLE -- Hilda A. Stein, 95, died at 2:05 a.m. Saturday, June 12, 2004, in the Pinckneyville Health Care Center. Hilda was born in Conant on Oct. 17, 1908, a daughter of George Henry and Lavinia Alice (Bergfeld) Berg. She married Sylvester Stein on May 9, 1934, at the St. Bruno Catholic Church rectory in Pinckneyville, and he preceded her in death on July 26, 1993. During her lifetime, she was a member of the St. Bruno Catholic Church, a teacher for over 40 years in Perry County one-room schools, a 'Happy Loyalettes' 4-H leader for many years, enjoyed dancing, sewing, crocheting, and playing the piano. Survivors include two sons, Frank Stein of Pinckneyville and Sylvester George Stein and his wife Carolyn of Millstadt; two daughters, Maredith McDaniel of Merced, Calif., and LaVinia Vanetti and her husband Donald of Parkville, Mo. ; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends. Hilda was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two sisters, Cleta Mohr and Mabel Wilson; and a daughter-in-law, Judy Stein. Friends may call at the Pyatt-Harrawood Funeral Home in Pinckneyville on today from 5 to 9 p.m. and on Thursday from 8 to 9:30 a.m.Services will be held on Thursday, June 17, 2004, in the St. Bruno Catholic Church in Pinckneyville at 10 a.m., with Father Brian Barker officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in DuQuoin. Memorials may be made to the St. Bruno Catholic School and will be accepted at the funeral home.

Marion 'Bo' Casten
SPARTA -- Marion W. 'Bo' Casten, 59, died at 1:55 a.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the McDaniel Funeral Home in Sparta, with Pastor Bruce Cameron officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Chester. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today and 7:30 a.m. until the hour of service Thursday at the funeral home. Mr. Casten was born on Feb. 18, 1945, to Wilbert and Elsie Casten. He married Brenda Schoenberger on Feb. 18, 1967, in Chester. She survives. He was employed at the Lewis Brothers Bakery as a sales manager. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Sparta. Survivors include his wife; his step-father, Lloyd Smith of Chester; son, Brian Casten of Sparta; brothers, Gene and wife Sandi of Casten and West Dundee, Bruce and wife Diana Casten of Fort Worth, Texas; sister, Marilynn Howell and husband Richard of St. Peters, Mo. ; grandchild, Malory. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Bradley. Memorials can be made to the American Cancer Society, The Heart Fund, and St. Jude's Children Hospital.

Emma Sue Trimble Furst
CARBONDALE -- Mrs. Emma Sue Trimble Furst, 88, a retired bookkeeper, died at her son's home in Metairie, La., on Tuesday, April 20, 2004. Mrs. Furst was born in Fulton, Ky., the daughter of the late Lego and Ruby Trimble. She resided in Carbondale for more than 70 years before moving to Metairie four years ago. She is survived by her husband, Mr. Vince Furst; a son, Stephen Furst of Metairie; a daughter, Su Lynn Hanson of Kansas City, Kan. ; four grandchildren, Cynthia Brunet, Jacob Hanson, Lindsay Konan and Steven Stuart; and four great-grandchildren. Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a graveside service at 1 p.m. Friday, June 18, 2004, at the Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale.

Bobby W. Milburn
WEST FRANKFORT -- Bobby W. Milburn, 77, died at 6:15 p.m. Monday, June 14, 2004, in Herrin Hospital. He was born Jan. 8, 1927, in Carrier Mills, to William McCellan Milburn and Ruby ( Lollar ) Milburn. He married Norma ( Clark ) Milburn on Dec. 31, 1970, in Pittsburg, and she survives. Surviving besides his wife Norma, are two sons, Rick Milburn and wife Mary Anne of Galena, and Terry Milburn of O'Fallon; daughter, Jeanine Allsup and husband ames of Belleville; a step son, Danny Day and wife Anita of West Frankfort; a stepdaughter, Kathy Hudgens of West Frankfort; also, nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Shelby Livers of Kankakee and Sybil Demsey of Benton. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant sister, and by two granddaughters, Lisa Day and Kim Bejmovicz. He was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in West Frankfort and the Masonic Lodge of Carrier Mills. He served in the United States Navy during World War II and was aboard the USS Carpolletti. Mr. Milburn was a retired supervisor for the Freeman Coal Company and was also a licensed airplane pilot. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Tim Sanders officiating. Burial will be in the Salem Cemetery in Carrier Mills. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. on Wednesday to the funeral home. It was Mr. Milburn's request that memorial contributions be made to the Franklin County DAV and will be accepted at the Parker-Reedy Funeral home.

Dean Betts
VIENNA -- Dean Elliott Betts, 19, passed away at 12:15 p.m. Sunday near Vienna, the result of a motorcycle accident. Dean was born Sept. 28, 1984, in Paducah. He was the son of Randy Betts and Jill (Trovillion) Betts. He is survived by his parents of Vienna; a sister, Teale Marie Betts of Vienna; a brother, Evin Lane Betts of Vienna; his maternal grandparents, Glenn and Sally Trovillion of Vienna; his paternal grandmother, Sue Betts of Cambria; and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives, and many dear friends. Dean was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Dean Betts; and his paternal great-grandparents, Donald and Dorothy Teal. Dean was a 2003 graduate of Vienna High SchooL. Dean had served as homecoming king, prom king and was a former class president. Dean had recently completed his freshman year at Shawnee Community College, where he served as a student ambassador. He was employed by Endrizzi Lawn Care Service. Dean was a member of the Gilead Church near Simpson. He enjoyed spending time with his friends. Dean made every day count and he loved making people laugh. Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Gilead Church near Simpson, with the Rev. Bud McDannel officiating. Burial will be in the Gilead Cemetery. Visitation will be from 7 a.m. to noon today at the Bailey Funeral Home in Vienna, and one hour prior to service Wednesday.

Robert 'Bob' Hepburn
JONESBORO -- Robert J. 'Bob' Hepburn, 85, of Hollywood, Fla., and formerly of Jonesboro, died at Monday, June 14, 2004, in Hollywood. Services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at Hileman Funeral Home, with Dr. Richard Hertenstein officiating. Burial will be in Jonesboro Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday.
